vampire weekend?

March 12, 2008

“you’ll totally like it.”

“…i don’t know, it seems like all the rest of our friends have hyped the band up so much i kinda don’t want to listen to the album it because it would feel trendy.”

“but it’s great. and they have that song ‘oxford comma.’ and that song with the crazy strings on it is pretty amazing, too. i mean, it’s so refreshing–who else is writing songs like that these days, anyway?”

“yeah, i know. that’s part of the problem. people want to say they like it just so they can look cooler or smarter or hipper than everyone else. or all of the above.”

“but you’ve heard their music, right?”

“yeah.”

“and it’s good, right? you like it?”

“yeah.”

“so don’t be an idiot.”

The quotes was you alone in a room in front of a mirror, right?

  2. soyuneik on March 21, 2008 at 12:30 am

Its Vampire day everyday for me…(insert funny voice here) ‘Sleep is for sissys and Stuffed animals’.
Yea Linkinpete… You are correct. “Trendy” is yet just another word for being too successful. Which is a good thing! Really who wouldn’t want to be?
Of course in the end its all really irrelevant. You like what you like, you listen to what you want to listen too, and who really cares what its categorized under, what other people say or think about it…

Hey, I’m listening to “The Great Band Era” on Wax. Right now. lol. Take that society! Woot!

man i love you even more for posting this ^_^

  5. LinkinPete on March 15, 2008 at 10:03 am

hm.. I see your point, this is kinda what I´ve ben trying to tell my friends.. if a band is great, it´s natural they get lots of fans.. then some ppl say they´re automarically trendy crap.. but I don´t know what should the band do? Should they say like “hey, we can´t have any more fans or we will be too trendy or whatever so please all the new people who like our music, don´t listen to it, ok?” =).. and ofcourse at first every band is “underground”, but if they stay there for years it just might be that they suck, rather than being “antitrendy” or whatever. Nice video.

And happy birthday to JOE ofcourse!! I love him so much (too)=)

  6. rockermeg on March 15, 2008 at 9:51 am

Hey Mike, I have no idea if you’ll pay attention to this comment but I really wanted to tell you about this new band that added me on myspace.

They’re called Conflict in the Sky and they’re reeeeeaaallly good! They’re not signed and they’re desperately trying to catch people’s attention!

So if you do read this Mike(or if anybody on the LPN reads this) go and check out their myspace page and listen to their great new songs!

    Thanks,,Megzz

  9. maria on March 15, 2008 at 1:04 am

Hi Mike! This video is a relaxing one) It seems to be a music of 60 or 70 maybe even 80). And these funny guys who wear such a nice and a little bit old fashioned clothes…. they seem to be a sort of travelers or whaterever. Anyway it can’t be called a phylosophical one cause the idea of it (of this video) is simple as hell haha))) Anyway you know that the videos that you put here are amazing and it raises my spiritis)))))) Thanks for that) Have a nice day)

  10. nillp on March 14, 2008 at 5:53 pm

yeah.. i’ve already seen this video..

i wouldn’t call like plagiarism.. but i will never say that it was a coincidence.. i’d say that it was inspired in BTH..

first, avril “plays” faint at her show.. now britney gets “inspired” in BTH..

    poor LP.. :

  11. alexlp on March 14, 2008 at 5:19 pm

Mike, look this video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5FEC87Iok Hum you see what I see, it look like Breaking The Habit !!! Plagiarism __

  12. Crystal122208 on March 14, 2008 at 4:28 pm

    honestly i hated that
but that conversation thing amused me for a moment =D

  14. outlawserenade on March 14, 2008 at 10:39 am

ahh.. I see the said band will have sudden influx of new fans..

..you can prolly retire the stage any time soon and be everybody else’s marketing consultant, shinod.

  15. AS_21 on March 14, 2008 at 10:24 am

in one moment it sounds like song singing in Venezia🙂 but it’s not really amazing…just good

    NILLP : oh… really poor😦 he looks so sad..😦

  16. nillp on March 14, 2008 at 9:48 am

  19. MICHELLEPINHEIRO on March 13, 2008 at 11:57 pm

ouh, mmmmmike! sometimes i think that you’re not real! How someone could have a kind of taste like you? A little execentric…You have good taste, but sometimes… sometimes…you exaggerate!!!!!!!! My buddy, sorry for say that, but this song is horrible!!!!!! If all song from this band were like that…. forget it… you asked our opinion, I just gave it to you… Ok, to you, I’m an idiot!!!(but I still don’t like it)

  20. nina on March 13, 2008 at 11:55 pm

I think you’re a fool not to like VW.

I missed them on snl, but it’s probably on youtube by now haha

  21. shinoda_me on March 13, 2008 at 9:41 pm

can someone PLEASE telll me if ppl who arent members of LPU (yet) can have a sneak peak at the transcript?????????????????????????????????????????

  22. analoggirl on March 13, 2008 at 7:53 pm

I love it! I’d never heard of Vampire Weekend before now but I’ll try to check ’em out.

Their sound is new… but not. I kinda detect this cool ska/reggae vibe in the drums as well as low-fi ’60s rock. Then again, I’ve never studied music theory so I could be completely wrong. lol

Vampire Weekend reminds me of two Canadian bands: Tokyo Police Club and Bedouin Soundclash. I read that Brad likes TPC so I’m hoping to see them open for LP in the near future – maybe at Edgefest! 😉

  23. Melissa on March 13, 2008 at 7:21 pm

I’ve never heard of them before but it’s like something I would listen to in the car and sing along to during the summer, with the windows down…

    or on the beach

after Island in the Sun by Weezer.

Think I’ll check itunes to see if it’s there for that sole purpose.

And everyone should just chill man, relax, burn some candles.

  24. nillp on March 13, 2008 at 7:01 pm

i totally agree that about our own preferences there is no right or wrong..

i just replied renny, ’cause i think that no one have the right of judge someone’s choice/opinion!

anyway.. have a great night mike.. i’m sorry that u’r reading our ‘arguments’..

    love ya ~ ♥

    mk’nil

  25. asianotter on March 13, 2008 at 5:30 pm

wow! people, can’t we just take a moment and calm down a bit? when talking about our own “PERSONAL” preferences there is no right or wrong! that being said, when someone doesn’t agree with your personal opinion that doesn’t make them wrong!!! i for one am appauled by the level to which some of the comments below have sunk to and it very disrespectful to our host! i think Mike’s intentions and reasons for his blog are being misinterpreted. lighten up, this a fun, light-hearted place to come visit.
Mike – thanks, VW is interesting, for me (not everyone!) not sure if they live up to to all the hype. thanks for sharing! welcome home for a well deserved rest.

  26. Celestial on March 13, 2008 at 5:18 pm

This too is my first time hearing of this band. It’s always cool to be introduced to new musicians unless those new musicians are as bad as that Soulja Boy dude. This band is not so bad though. I like their Oxford Comma song, but not this one. The drumming is a little odd, but as said “refreshing”.

  27. amp101 on March 13, 2008 at 3:44 pm

I’ve heard of this band before…happy you featured them!…love this song and “A-Punk” – so upbeat and happy🙂
About the whole conversation thing…the whole “if i listen to this then I am conforming to what’s popular..”…my response to this is simply that I listen to whatever I want… If it sounds good and makes me feel excited about music, then I’ll keep listening.

  28. So_S on March 13, 2008 at 3:39 pm

    random much?
    xDD
    that was pretty nice!

  29. AnVanoppens on March 13, 2008 at 2:25 pm

never heard of them.. but LP really is precious! LP 4ever!! : ))

  30. nillp on March 13, 2008 at 1:52 pm

btw, for me LP IS precious..!

  31. nillp on March 13, 2008 at 1:51 pm

just because i didn’t like of a different band, it does not mean that i can’t appreciate anything besides the ‘precious LP’..

it just mean that i have my own opinion and don’t stay like: ‘woow.. i hate it.. but i have to love just ’cause MIKE SHINODA posted and liked it!’

i prefer to have my own opinion instead of being a fibber..!🙂

  32. rockermeg on March 13, 2008 at 1:41 pm

    What’s your problem?

Just because someone doesn’t like a band you like doesn’t make them wrong!

I bet you think you’re taking Mike’s side ’cause he put a video he likes up here, but you just said VW was better than LP…not gonna go down well😉

PEOPLE ARE ALLOWED TO LIKE LINKIN PARK MORE THAN VAMPIRE WEEKEND

    God

That video is random Mike🙂 But I was just watching the Red Hot Chili Pepper’s Dani California and that was even more random! hehe…

    x

  33. renny on March 13, 2008 at 12:57 pm

I’m not surprised by these comments,
usually linkin park fans can’t appreciate different (better) bands besides their precious Linkin Park.

    go fuck yourselves

  34. Snails on March 13, 2008 at 11:35 am

it seems uk indie has gone across to the US, i genuinely do like VW but they haven’t seen much hype over here.

  35. Jhuryn on March 13, 2008 at 11:04 am

I think I saw an interview with them on VH-1 a few months ago. They’re students at an Ivy League school or something…

I definitely think they’re interesting! lol

  36. nillp on March 13, 2008 at 10:52 am

with the transcript chat in my hands, i could have sure that u didn’t answer my question.. i think that the moderators not even allowed my question..😦

anyway.. was really great to be there..🙂

    take care; see you.. ♥

  37. nillp on March 13, 2008 at 9:50 am

yeaah.. it reminded me arctic monkeys too..

  38. nillp on March 13, 2008 at 9:47 am

when it started i was like “WTF?!”.. and when it finished, i was still like “WTF?!”.. ha.

i just wasn’t expecting that a band with this name would sing something like.. like.. like this.

anyway.. thanks -[i think]- for sharing.. x)

    love ya ~ ♥

    mk’nil

  39. Y_ on March 13, 2008 at 9:39 am

  41. Ilo on March 13, 2008 at 8:59 am

Hey Mike, I don´t know…….that´s not really my kind of music. But I think on a Party, after some drinks and late hour it could be funny! Maybe I´ll check it out…..Ilo

  42. Sashy on March 13, 2008 at 5:25 am

Nahhhhh, not great. I’ll listen to a few others to really test them out, but probably nahhh, give me rock any day.

Try Gyroscope, specifically ‘Snakeskin’, that’s a good band (and Aussie home grown)

  43. MusicalMorphine on March 13, 2008 at 5:08 am

@ Murry: I don’t know whether to laugh or cry at that video. Unbelievable.

  44. Daga280 on March 13, 2008 at 5:02 am

Oo i hardly understand why did u put it here /thinking/ but this video reminds me summer and sailing on the lake besides my city^^ (love it) and this conversation o.O anyway… have a great day Mike-u R finally home🙂

I thought today’s Friday 13 ;)) Very interesting sound! Thanx fo sharing! And the dialogue’s pretty much dope haha

to murry – recently i watched one comedy movie and they said there that gays are like vampires ))) once you’ve kissed by them you’ll never stay the same >:)

  47. Helene on March 12, 2008 at 10:45 pm

hahaha… sorry :$ what music is that? it made me laugh.. =)

  48. murry on March 12, 2008 at 10:40 pm

Well, I’d never heard of them before, because I’m obviously out of touch with what the kids are listening to these days. But I was pleased with that. There’s something The Strokes-ish about them. But cleaner and fresher and younger, you know… Anyway, thanks for that.

Hey, here’s my YouTube clip of the moment. It’s hilarious. A Representative from my state thinks homosexuality is worse than terrorism.

Very funny. :( ::ready to transfer out of Oklahoma now::

Seriously, how did she get elected?

  49. shinoda_me on March 12, 2008 at 10:40 pm

jeez.. i wish i never heard that voice … it would have sounded 3 million times better if you sung it Mike😀

  50. Squishy_Ho on March 12, 2008 at 8:02 pm

    doubleyou
    tee
    eff
    !?
as for the music: anything that still uses a casio as a main instrument needs to listen to LP. they’d understand how it should be

  51. rubyred82 on March 12, 2008 at 7:54 pm

Great band name. The music, ehhhh it’ll probably have to grow on me.

  52. durg on March 12, 2008 at 7:34 pm

lmao, i hate conversations like that, i have them all the time with people.

but funny at the same time.😀

ha, i just downloaded their cd last week… i was debating for a while just cause mtv was promoting the crap out of them and i didn’t think they’d be all that great.. they are good though, very different!

  55. soyuneik on March 12, 2008 at 7:12 pm

“and it’s good, right? you like it?”

    Me:“no”

  56. CherryRed on March 12, 2008 at 7:03 pm

  57. akitagirl on March 12, 2008 at 6:58 pm

Wow, first comment – have to say I have not heard anything from them before – very different, fresh – worth checking out. Like to hear what the rest of their stuff sounds like.
