persepolis (and puppets)

PERSEPOLIS

“A vivid, black-and-white picture, a realistic and imaginary
picture of life in Tehran from the pre-revolutionary days to the present time. A
gripping picture too, because it is seen through the eyes of a young girl whose
body is growing even as her country is being crippled by intolerance and war.
The intellectual elite flee their country in which they are persecuted, tortured and
even killed, the martyrs become part of history books, a history re-written by the
Mullahs. Distrust sets in while the Pasdaran control all activities especially those
of women, who are daily harassed, blamed for their “misconduct” for “improper
headgear”. This tragic history is also part of our own history because our friend
Akbar Ganji and Abdolfattah Soltani and many other victims are struggling
against this repressive regime, so we are proud to take part in this admirable
adaptation project.”

  28. analoggirl on May 18, 2008 at 4:38 pm

When I saw the puppet hit his ‘bitch’ I actually said, “Holy sh!t!” Needless to say I wasn’t prepared for the masturbation scene that followed. LOL I wonder if the Geto Boys have seen this…

Persepolis is on my “to watch” list. I saw the trailer at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival and thought it looked amazing. I might even pick up the graphic novel. 🙂

BTW – Check out my comment in your “MTM Anniversary” thread. 😉

  29. DaniShinoda on May 18, 2008 at 3:55 pm

    Hello Mike, how are you?
Firstly, I wanna see this movie, it seems interesting, i like about gender.

Then, I’ve ever watched Puppets, they do part of my childhood. Amazing, funny video haha!

Love you, peace! Dani from Brazil.

    Elmo!

  31. bec on May 18, 2008 at 2:39 pm

sounds like an interesting film – A few years ago I worked for the British Embassy in Tehran, they wouldn’t let me actually go there as it wasn’t safe for a single woman…even if I was the seismic specialist.

    ~

Anyways, that puppet video was horrible…or am I the only person that finds Bert scary without Ernie there to make him look gay and harmless…it’s the eye brows…he’s gonna kill us all!!!!!!!

  32. Xavi_cardenas on May 18, 2008 at 2:23 pm

I saw Marjane Satrapi on The Colbert Report a few months ago. I remember thinking it looked really powerful, and the animation was so interesting. I’d actually forgotten about it, so thanks for reminding me.
