glorious excess – modern vanitas

June 9, 2008

someone i’ve never heard of, but found today:

Vanitas with Disco Ball. by *saturninus on deviantART

and two that many of us are already very familiar with:

mark ryden (from his “blood” series)

and damien hirst. the piece is called FOR THE LOVE OF GOD and is made of real platinum, diamonds, and human teeth. i understand it cost £15,000,000 to £20,000,000 to make, and sold for £50,000,000. that’s almost 100 million US dollars.

  1. KATHYxx on March 4, 2009 at 12:20 am

The Damien Hearst piece just showed up on one of my midterms. muahahhahhahhaaaaaaaaa

  2. mike_changed_my_life on August 13, 2008 at 12:12 am

mike shinoda changed my life I used to be unsure of who I was but from listening to his LP tracks as well as his Fort Minor tracks he confirmed to me who I really am. Michael Kenji Shinoda is God to me if he told me to shoot myself (though we all know he wouldn’t) I would do it. Mike always talks about how u shouldn’t get caught up in peoples perceptios of you and that’s how I try to live my life. No Roads Left could single handedly be the greatest recorded song ever created. Mike someday I hope to meet you and tell you this but until then I will buy anything with your name on it or has anything to do with you.

Wow, I just made 7 posts out of one post. I have to apologize to all you people for making this page take longer to load…ha. I know almost no one is going to read all that but oh well.

  4. Ryan on July 10, 2008 at 8:16 pm

If it’s played live, then I think the beauty of it will shock many people. Many people will spread the word about it if they hear it live and I’m sure many other people will find out about the song. I just think that there’s other ways to spread this song other than making it a single and I believe that performing it live is the best way. It would be so awesome for people to experience this song for the first time by hearing it live. I’m sure it would change them. I will hope that this happens for many people at PR2008 this year. You can do it Mike. Good luck at Projekt Rev this year. – Ryan

  5. Ryan on July 10, 2008 at 8:15 pm

I agree with everything that says except for the idea of making it a single. If it was made a single, it would ruin the fun of it. One of the awesome things about the song is that it’s a b-side. It’s so rare to see such a good song as a b-side. It makes it so awesome that not a lot of people know about it. I don’t think the secrecy of it should be ruined by making it a single. It should be a reward for anyone who manages to discover it. It’s just not the kind of song that should be a single. People should find it for themselves. In order for this song to get the recognition it deserves, it simply needs to be played live.

  6. Ryan on July 10, 2008 at 8:14 pm

I’ll still enjoy PR again this year if it’s not played but I’ll be a little disappointed just because I have a strong feeling that you can perform it live now and that you will this year. I hope my premonition is right. This song doesn’t need to be a single. With all due respect to, I think that it’s a stupid idea. However, I do think that it probably could have and should have been on the album. It truly is one of the best songs you guys have ever made. It’s affected me like few songs have and I’m sure it’s done the same for many other people.

  7. Ryan on July 10, 2008 at 8:13 pm

If you’re really not ready to do it this year, then it’s ok. I know it would be one of the biggest challenges for you as a singer but I believe if you performed it at the right time (the right order in the set list), you could do it. I’ll once again be hoping that you perform it this year at Projekt Rev. I hope that those two set lists which have popped up on some LP websites are true. If they are, then maybe you guys are already planning to perform it.

  8. Ryan on July 10, 2008 at 8:13 pm

However, now things have changed. It’s one year later. My whole point of this post is to let you know that I believe in you. I’m not sure what everyone else thinks but I know that you can perform this song live. I understand that it’s one of the most challenging Linkin Park songs to sing. To be honest, I’m a singer. I’ve done a lot of vocal covers for LP songs including this one and I definitely think it’s one of the toughest because of the high notes and the quick changes in pitch and rhythm.

  9. Ryan on July 10, 2008 at 8:11 pm

I completely understand why it wasn’t performed at PR2007. You guys were still debuting songs like Hands Held High and Shadow of the Day. And obviously, I knew that you guys wouldn’t play No Roads Left before Valentines Day or In Between which debuted at the 2008 US Tour. Therefore, I didn’t mind that it wasn’t played at PR2007. It was more important to learn how to play the songs from the album first before focusing on a b-side. I’m also sure that many people would want to hear songs from the album first and wouldn’t have been familiar with No Roads Left.

  10. Ryan on July 10, 2008 at 8:11 pm

By the time Projekt Revolution 2007 came around, I was practically praying for you to perform the song live. I was trying to spread the word on almost every website and telling people to request that you perform NRL at PR2007. Now that I look back, that was probably stupid. After all, It was the first tour for Minutes to Midnight and you guys were just learning how to play some of the songs from the album. It was way too soon to ask for No Roads Left live. I also didn’t understand at that time how you felt about performing it live.

  11. Ryan on July 10, 2008 at 8:10 pm

Hello Mike. Although I understand that the chance of you reading this is 1 in 10000000000, I’m going to post this anyway. When I first heard No Roads Left (which was on May 15 2007 when the album came out), I knew right away that the song was possibly one of the best songs ever made by Linkin Park. I would have never guessed at that point that one of the best songs would be a song without Chester in it. As I grew to like the song more and more, I realized that it was probably one of the top 5 or 10 songs that you guys have made including all the b-sides from prior albums.

  12. I_B_Long on July 2, 2008 at 10:33 pm

holy shit mike! that song is great (i know, im a bit late here…) if i didnt know it was you i wouldnt have recognized it! you have a great voice! as chaz once said “water and lots of practice” is all you need……:D

  13. axrinekey on June 17, 2008 at 12:39 am

    Ahhh… Mike!
I do hope you can sing No Roads Left live 😦
    It’s really a fabulous song!!! ><
(I don’t mind if you go out of tone, not much people can sing high notes, especially males. ;D)

Hope you can do it, anyway.

    Ooh.. the skeleton xDD

  14. rockermeg on June 12, 2008 at 11:43 am

Wow I likey the look of that diamond skull 😉

Hey, if you’re not up to singing it yet don’t. I’m just super happy that you actually thought about it and considered the possibilty!

I love that song so much though!!! You have a beautifull voice Mike I can’t believe you haven’t showed it before!!!

Hahaha i love irony-it makes everything so much more interesting! And you could hardly sell all your hard work for like $250 or whatever…and its for charity so the more people spend the better!

    Lots of love,

    (ps-my Projekt Rev tickets just arrived!They’re blue,YAY! can’t wait!!!)

  15. ShadowerLiltani on June 11, 2008 at 8:56 am

Isn’t deviantart a fun site? I love going on there. If you haven’t already, you should really check out all the pixel art. It’s everything from the more detailed, scenic drawings to game sprites. People make some wild looking isometric game maps and cities, too. (my DA: theartbook35, in case anyone wants to look me up)

  16. Ezza on June 10, 2008 at 9:40 pm

i love ur voice on that song it sounds so….for a want of a better word: angellic…i agree tho it’s not an easy song to sing i had trouble trying to sing along with the cd and i’ve been told that i sing similar to amy lee XD….keep working at it and im sure that ur voice’ll get stronger and the song’ll be come easier to perform 🙂 either that or you could play it as an encore XD no way its going to kill anyother songs if its last XD

  17. BigBadBeti on June 10, 2008 at 3:52 pm

I Love No Roads Left! It’s a great song, so it would be fantastic to hear it live 🙂 But if you don’t feel “strong enough” to sing it now I understand it and I’ll be patient…i’ll try 😛
I also want to say that LOATR clip is fantastic!!! Congrats, well done 😉
    Take care!

  18. Ewelina16 on June 10, 2008 at 12:40 pm

I think, that the most important is Mike!!! If he says he can’t make it through propely and that song takes a ton out of him, we should accept it and wait! There are so MANY fantastic songs in Mike’s performance, and I am satisfied with them! 😀 And Mike, You can not risk losing your voice!!!!!!! NEVER!!! 😉 So I’ll wait, when you’ll be ready!

  19. maria on June 10, 2008 at 9:58 am

You know No roads left is really great song) I agree that it can be difficult for you to perform it) live) But maybe you could make an experiment with it. Give it Chester and let him perform it) I don’t want to offend you, I’m still your fan) I’m just (I think that we all are kinda worried about you voice) worried about it all. But If you perform it live, I will support you)))))))))) And don’t get angry about that sentence concerning the experiment) I was just kidding) I understand that it means lots of things to you) and don’t wanna offend you anyhow) Fiat Mike Shinoda)

  20. Xenith on June 10, 2008 at 9:09 am

And regarding No Roads Left, I CAN NOT THANK YOU ENOUGH for posting your feedback. I and one hell of alot of fans are going to be very happy you took notice to the petition and reassured us that maybe possibly one day you could end the show with it???? or LPU8 ??????

    hint hint! 😀

Last time I promise! – ps : I’m over the moon you have seen one of my works of art !

  21. Xenith on June 10, 2008 at 9:06 am

    “FAINTS” Thanks Mike 🙂 …wow.

I gave up on art a long time ago when (in a slight spin-off from this topic) ‘artists’ where getting credit for work that didn’t take any effort at all. Gaining fame and fortune with an easy impact.

Take Tracey Emin, who in 1999 released ‘My Bed’ – for me this threw contemporary art out the window and into the ranks of quick wins and easy money.

After this my own art tutor collected beer bottles, filled each with trash and presented them spelling out his name… he won awards and gained fame. This made me loose passion for my own art so its inspiring to see you and many others relate and retaliate with your work especially when I can afford it!

  22. lp_lucia on June 10, 2008 at 8:55 am

About the skull… i think with 10 mil. $ i could buy a quarter of my country or maybe more :))
About the song NRL… i personally love that song, it’s great, but as you said i think if you are not ready 110 % to sing it live, you mustn’t do it. i prefer listing the studio version of NRL over and over, then to hear it live and after that to know that you just killed your voice. what’s more important for a fan: [to go to a concert and listing the band live] or [to stay home praying that for your voice will get better]? first thing it’s better to do… do you agree?
i hope to see you in a concert, maybe in 2009.
take care and send greetings to chester! ❤

  23. outlawserenade on June 10, 2008 at 7:38 am

So you’ll reclaim your wasted name at deviantart, then? Would be good, I reckon – it’ll allow us who aren’t in the US to buy your prints in smaller size (and obviously, price), and they have good QC and whatnot, not to mention they also have just upgraded their pro print division that allow you to determine the prices and whatnot of your artwork.

Plus it’ll inadvertently make us fledgling artists feel a tad closer to you. 😉

  24. LinkinPete on June 10, 2008 at 4:01 am

Have you ever thought of putting up stuff on deviantart? I mean something “smaller”, scetches or something that wouldn´t put up in a big show. That´d be awesome.
That saturnus should be proud, Mike Shinoda put his pic here! This reminds me that I´d like to point out how amazing it feels to me that you are so down to earth. I mean that you post on LPMB and here and responce to us (like, good luck with that!) I mean you are in a position where you could say “fuck it” and live in a castle and have a trained monkey to pour you chrystal every day. But you´re here posting and being friendly to people. And I´m not falttering, hope you know that. Thank you, keep it up.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD… i fucking cant believe they make stuff like that … and sell it .. i cant believe people actually go buy that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i’d rather invest in something else that’d benefit the world .. this shit is about to get stolen if not kept under great security => waste more money on that ….

i still wish i could buy some of your art 😦 its so awesome and soooooooooo out of reach for me :((((((((((

pretty sad this thing about (not) playing no roads left live.. i confess that this song is one of my faves.. :z

anyway. vanitas are one of the best things in art and ryden one of the best artists in the whole world.. i really love all the
suffering in his paintings and the way he represents it.. have u ever gone to one of his exhibitions? it’s one of my dreams go to one..!

    take care; love ya ~ mk’nil ~ ♥

  33. lynndarwinharris on June 9, 2008 at 5:14 pm

I’ve seen the diamond skull before. I think it is very unique. I don’t know who could afford it other than Bill Gates, but unique indeed. I remember seeing it first on a news site (forget which one). If I was that rich I would put my money to better use, just think what a 100million dollars could do to benefit other people who have nothing at all. Such a waste of money! By the way I love No Roads Left, you have an awesome voice. Thanks for giving time out of your busy schedule! LDH

  34. vanessa_6487 on June 9, 2008 at 4:37 pm

Well I think ur art is way different than others…. I mean ur purpose is different…. they might be expencive but all the funds go for a good cause…I mean not only u have a passion for art… but u actually give a point and used it to benefit others too…. I will give anything to hear and see u performe “no roads left” live…. wow it will be AMAZING….

    Att. Vanessa

  35. yun on June 9, 2008 at 3:56 pm

NO WAY! Thanks for sharing with us the existence of that BRILLIANT site! I just signed the petition, I totally agree with them. That song should be in MTM, is just perfect. I cried when I heard it because I couldn’t believe it was your’s damn beautiful (as on “In between”) ç_ç That song is so powerful, the lyrics are great and I agree with Chester saying that your voice is better than his on this track. I know that it’s a hard one to play live, but please, try! Maybe just to have fun with the audience singing it, WE LOVE IT! By the way, hoping you will listen to all our (my) dreams, I don’t think I’ll ever by a skull like that. It’s quite horrible, and expensive. Take care! < 3

  36. shan1105 on June 9, 2008 at 3:55 pm

it could be said that if you were a collector of art, not just a mike shinoda fan that spending a $1000 on a piece would not be unheard of. many local artist sell pictures not far from that. I don’t know what mike plans on selling his new pieces for but if you love art you can go to the museum and see it, were lots of people have to enjoy art. Most people don’t own the great art of the world. it is in museums that you visit. so maybe local people can got to there art museums and tell them to put a piece of mike shinoda’s work up.! I love your art mike and i love no roads so lets hear it in cleveland!!!!

  39. Curiosa on June 9, 2008 at 3:05 pm

Oh, yeah I saw that Hirst sold it for $100 M to an unnamed investment group. He’ll be getting paid in cash. He made a really good profit since he estimated it only cost him between $10 & $15 M to create it. Oh The Rock Report mentioned LP’s new video this past weekend so they’re helping u guys promote it. :)~

  40. Curiosa on June 9, 2008 at 3:05 pm

Mike I don’t know how much u r planning on selling the pics but if they’re around $500 then that’s not that bad. Local artists around here sell theirs 4 almost that much (depending on size) & I don’t even live in the city. I’ve even seen photos sell for more than that. At Epcot, we stopped by the art gallery & the paintings there were selling for $1,000 +. Well at least the ones that I liked. lol I agree ur pics aren’t that expensive compared to others. U r however fortunate enough 2 where u don’t have 2 try 2 get ur name out there by selling smaller sizes of ur artwork in mass production the way Nene Thomas did.

  41. Ivilp on June 9, 2008 at 2:22 pm

    Dear Mike, 🙂
have a great concert in Vilnius (Lithuania)!!! Though I can’t be there cuz i’m in UK now (i’ve been on 2nd concert of 2 in london in january- was maaaad!!! THANX for the memories!) I’m SURE the crowd in Vilnius will welcome u VERY warmly, cuz they were waiting for u 2 come like 4 ages!!! PLZ say Hi to my native town! xxx

I know it’s art and all, and I’m an artist etc etc. but don’t you think £50,000,000 could be better of spent than creating a diamond skull? Just a thought..

  47. JPkaukonen on June 9, 2008 at 12:55 pm

I love the vocals on No Roads Left,, I know you push your limits there with the range and all but I think you did a great job on the track. 🙂 I’ve got the footage where you record the chorus at laurel house. I’ve loved the melody since I first saw the footage :)) Hey Mike imma see you in a couple of days at Provinssirock, Finland! Front row ,, take care < 3

  48. Southpaw on June 9, 2008 at 12:41 pm

Hey Mike. Have Chester help you out when you sing No Roads Left. You always do backing vocals for him. I’m sure everyone wants just you to sing it, but I understand it is challenging it is. You are a truly amazing person, and all of your artwork shows it.

  49. Aiste on June 9, 2008 at 12:27 pm

Hey Mike, I don’t know are you remember me…but I wrote to you I was AjsToOtEa…but I couldn’t sign in…I don’t know what happened…now I joined another time…but one my friend said that only LPU members can get your autographs…and she said that LPU members have to get invitation from LP to greet’n’meet or something like that….I realy want to get your autograph, but I don’t know what to do 😐
sorry that I wrote there (like every time) but I confused now….

  50. Jhuryn on June 9, 2008 at 12:24 pm

    A. We fans with limited income will just have to enjoy your work through pictures and possibly a really cool artbook(?). I’m sure you won’t leave us hangin.

    B. No Roads Left is awesome and if you love us then you’ll try it at least once at a show were the digital recording is available and some die hard fans will be present. Cough cough, Cleveland, cough cough. ;0)

    C. That skull is SICK. There was a program about the making of on the Discovery Channel a few weeks ago. It’s such a morbid yet beautiful piece. I think it’s meant to “laugh in the face of death”. Apparently the 52 carat center diamond and all the others were ethically sourced. Good to know.

  51. Yuki on June 9, 2008 at 12:01 pm

u know mike u should really make an exhibition for those ppl without all that money. im not a red carpet celeb. im gonna go to university n ill never have enough money to buy ur stuff…also u should come to europe with an exhibition. if i had the money id spend it all just to be able to go to america, see mr hahns suru store, buy ur dc remix shoes n see ur exhibition. i love ur art n i love music

n this skull looks fab! hehe..wouldnt wanna have it tho..too much..unless someone gave it to me as a present.

  52. Yahali on June 9, 2008 at 11:49 am

i’m not stupid. what do you think? i dont read nothing in the blog and only send comment like ‘BLA-BLA-COME HERE’?!

do you think that i dont care from nothing and just want lp in my country?! you have big wrong.

we cant wait anymore. OK?. if you want to wait for lp in your country-wait. i hope they will come to your country sometime

  53. Jaclyn on June 9, 2008 at 11:49 am

I like vanitas with disco ball and diamond skull! That;s great! But mark ryden is sick, disgusting art, he looks like a maniac. As for noroadsleft – it’s frightening to sing when you usually dont sing a lot, in front of a huge number of ppl who wants too much of you (i know many fans (they’re proud to be LP fans nevertheless) who always disappointed in LP gigs and songs and outfit and singing or whatever coz their dreams dont come true) So I’m sure that someday you’ll make it and you’ll take it to the road ;)) Wish you good luck!

  54. Hybr1d_7h3ory on June 9, 2008 at 11:41 am

I really enjoy Mikes art almost as much as I do his music. I am saving up to buy a print but until then I purchased one of the Music for Relief shirts that he did and that you can still purchase, its like a piece of art you can wear, and as the description says it is one of the softest shirts you will ever wear.

No roads left behind is an amazing song

  55. zimminator on June 9, 2008 at 11:28 am

wow. that skull is so fancy that it makes me want to puke……but anyways, u really should make no roads left a single, cuz its my favorite song of yours of all time, except krwling…..but i dont have no roads left. i can only listen to it thru….but i want it really bad! lol but to hear u live would be amazing, but dont do it if it would kill yer voice lol. 🙂 loves u!

  56. PinkWater3 on June 9, 2008 at 11:28 am

I always loved Mark Ryden’s art so much! I’m glad you talked about NRL and cleared this up. It’s probably one of my favourite songs. Even though it would be really amazing to hear it live, I think we all have to accept the fact that you’re maybe not ready to perform it. Just know that this song really has a lot of fans and we hope to hear it live at least once. Take care of your lovely voice Mr. Shinoda.

  57. Raiden on June 9, 2008 at 11:13 am

Yahali! Stop this childish issue. You should know that, this not depend on Mike that LP is going to Israel or not. You think you are the only one who has a problem like that? Yahali! Not just Israel waiting 7 years that LP play a show. Hungary also. Still I don’t write on Mike’s blog and create videos on YouTube that bla-bla-bla come here and here play a show. Because it’s not depend on him or the rest of the band. All you can do is wait and trust that they will come sometime. Not just Israel, all the other countries where there are LP fans. For Mike!: Really like your new DC Shoes, hope we can buy it internationally.

  58. lp_fm_fan on June 9, 2008 at 11:04 am

Mike, the secret performance you had with LA LPUers had given us the set lists that they got from there.

I’m not sure if this is just your way of surprising us or if you’re really telling the truth. I was excited to when I heard NRL was gonna be played live. But now I’m doubtful. A lot of us LOVE that song and we don’t understand why it never made the album. That song has to be my favorite off the MTM album, even if it wasn’t “officially” part of the album.

Thanks for reading our comments or most of them.

P.S. I’d really love to buy your art work. I have no money and that’s how a lot of us fans are. Maybe once I get a job, I’ll afford it.

  59. ShadowerLiltani on June 9, 2008 at 10:58 am

Granted, I don’t have 500 dollars to spend on a print because that money is for bills. But ya know, Mike, your prints are EXTREMELY cheap compared to other fine artists around the world. Prints can cost twice, three times or more than what your prints cost, so, I really don’t think anybody should be saying anything about prices. If you want a print at such a reasonable price that badly, save up the money, and get it. Oh, and, on LPMB I’ve been telling people for a while that singing NRL live would be way to rough on your voice. You’re a rap artist, as far as I know, you probably don’t have Chester’s scar tissue.

  60. Melk on June 9, 2008 at 10:20 am

Good luck for the next and takes care of you and of your voice : DON’T sing No Roads Left, Mike !!
I support you…As well as all the French fans… =D

  61. Melk on June 9, 2008 at 10:20 am

Hey ! How are you ?
It’s not serious, if you aren’t ready to sing No Roads Left ,don’t sing it, we shall wait for the moment until what you will feel ready, even if it is a magnificent song and even my favorite song…Don’t kill your beautiful voice especially to your young age !!And to the fact, I go to the Louvre, Wednesday 11, I will have spoiled you of a week!! If you can return in France and that you want to go to the Louvre you there can go, as that I shall see you for the first time = ) !! But it’s too a joke because that shall surprise me that you go two time in succession at the Louvre !!
After all this is as you want… ; )

  62. Madlen on June 9, 2008 at 10:17 am

.funny fact-my best friend’s father used to sleep in a coffin when he was younger:DPretty cool…I would like to try it for one night but i don’t think my parents would allow it:DAnd I’d love to hear No Roads Left live too…but i don’t want your voice to be hurt after it…and still it will be awesome:DI really love the song….and btw I saw in the comments below a suggestion about an art book which I totally support!!

  63. Madlen on June 9, 2008 at 10:14 am

hmmm was vanitas the first thing that came in your mind when you decided to make another art show?Or did you consider something else?I’m really curious:DAnyway I’m making a my own website in school and it’s dedicated to art and i used all the artists you put in your blog and of course your art too:DMy teacher was actually really impressed with all the stuff that I’ll be using and she asked me how found those pieces and I said “Thanks to Mike Shinoda” :))Happy moments…anyway skulls and death are things that I’m interested in too…

  64. Fishgoingwest on June 9, 2008 at 10:05 am

I’m also very very very very very very happy that you talked about No Roads Left!!!!!You will sing it live someday!! I hope I would be there that day!!Really really really really love this song.Though it may not sound awesome for me at the first time,I just find it more and more fantastic after listening to it again and again!Love your voice, love the lyrics, love the melody!!I listened to it every time I’m low and feel disappointed about myself.Just can give me courage to face all the troubles and be brave again.
No Roads Left is indeed a very very very perfect song!

  65. Fishgoingwest on June 9, 2008 at 10:05 am

    Again!You answered a question again!

    Really amazing

    Kind Mike

I think you must have thought about the people who will go to see your art show and the price they will pay.So I think it must be a reasonable price that most people can afford. After all,you are not opening a show just to make money. It’s just a way to show your artworks and win more respects.

  66. Keilah_136 on June 9, 2008 at 9:57 am

    that skull is really cool
_to bad it takes so much out of you, its such a sweet song.
and how come you guys never come to Edmonton, AB? you only go to eastern canada and i’ve been waiting since i was 10 to see linkin park live…. and i’m 16 now. so yeah anytime you feel like going

  67. Anstice on June 9, 2008 at 9:12 am

Hey Mike. I was having a gander at the Mark Ryden “Blood” series. It looks cool, but while I was looking at it, I glanced over at the Chiodos autographed poster that I have on my wall. The artwork on it looks very similar to the “Blood” series. I was wondering if you knew if Mark Ryden was somehow involved in the artwork that Chiodos used for their album and posters…? By the way, the fact that you would even consider playing No Roads Left live if it takes that much out of you is awesome :). That’s just because you’re an awesome guy! Thanks!

  68. nikkiann0100 on June 9, 2008 at 8:49 am

I think that would be awesome if you did no roads left live. I really love that song. Also I know you guys did qwerty live in Japan but I never heard it live yet. Do you think you guys might be playing it live at any of the us shows this year.?

  69. analoggirl on June 9, 2008 at 8:25 am

Xenith made a great comment and I’m glad you took the time to address it. As a celebrity, where do you draw the line between irony and the trappings of fame? Will the individuals buy your art because of its message and aesthetic appeal, or because it was a limited edition Mike Shinoda piece? You need to bring your art to the masses. We want an art book. (And No Roads Left live, but that’s another post…)

  70. analoggirl on June 9, 2008 at 8:13 am

Here’s the pic that NoFace was talking about:
It’s interesting to see that you’ve been fascinated with skulls from such a young age. It’s a bit ironic; even now, you’re examining your own mortality while at the height of your youth. I suppose the weird balance between celebrity and accomplishment will force you to look at what’s real and what you’ll be leaving behind when it’s all over…

  71. SimplyMode on June 9, 2008 at 8:11 am

hmmm. That “FOR THE LOVE OF GOD” piece is pretty dope!

but honestly i think there was no point for it..

(ok now i’m just being harsh!)

Anyway…I got [N.E.R.D – SEEING SOUNDS] today && its amazzzinngg!

cant wait to see them live with you guys in Milton Keynes xD

  72. Lvix on June 9, 2008 at 8:08 am

Mike, i thought that you already did one roads left one time life…
I thought you did it at the private show for the selected LPU members…
it was the show i think few weeks ago or maybe only one week…

You guys played the song we made it with busta to…

I hope you will play the song live at projekt revolution in Dusseldorf…
But if you don’t, i understand it have to be very difficult for you…

P.s.: If you stay in a hotel afther the revolution in Dusseldorf (LTU Arena)…
there is an hotel that ment to be for rock bands, football players…
I will stay in that hotel:d You to:p? It would be a please to meet you again this time…
    But time will tell… Peace..

  73. Yahali on June 9, 2008 at 7:53 am

why there are countries who need to wait 7 years to show?

countries who have many fan’s of Linkin Park

    country like Israel

WHY? now we need to wait 7 years for answer from you? nah…

  74. antje on June 9, 2008 at 7:35 am

The Skull looks cool – but people are realy willing to pay 100 Mio US $(!!!!!) for a Skull with human teeth??? Sick world…

  75. Shinnizly on June 9, 2008 at 7:31 am

Oh too bad you guys can’t play No Roads Left. It’s a great song. In fact it’s my favorite song. But that’s ok we understand. deviantArt there are so many great artists in that site I have been a member of it for two years now. In fact I have a friend that looks exactly like you who is a member there too. He’s studying graphic design and I think he is very talented! Here’s the link if you want to take a look Hope to hear No Roads Left live one day.

  76. Kostas on June 9, 2008 at 7:24 am

Ok, wait a sec… I remember watching Warren Buffet’s biography, ok? I know he’s ritch with this coca-cola thing and all, but if I’m not mistaken, he was all poor back then, when he started doing what he does. I think he’s just a man who knows how to handle money, and this is what got him where he is. I also remember him saying “I don’t need things like 2 cars, why would I need a second one? blah blah blah?” Well…. like he knows how to handle money even for himself, not being greedy and all…. I don’t think he goes between celebrities like Paris Hilton just because he’s ritch. Still… that’s all I know, so… maybe I’m missing sth about him :-/

  77. ruru87 on June 9, 2008 at 7:04 am

those are pretty like the pieces you will like, mike. they are kind of your style.

  78. NoFace on June 9, 2008 at 6:54 am

It’s pretty obvious that your art is inspired by vanitas style, and this has been a long time obsession (someone post a pic of high-school Michael on the LPUMB and pointed out that you have a thing for skull since your young age). As a half-Japanese artist who has claimed to be under the great influence of Japanese culture, have you ever thought of vanitas-alike (reminder of the brevity of life/pleasure) Japanese art subject like cherry blossom (sakura) or Hototogisu (lesser cuckoo). Have you ever thought about making a new kind of vanitas (not only skulls or other tradition subjects) with the impact of your Japanese experience?

  79. NoFace on June 9, 2008 at 6:44 am

Woah there, by answering that way, it seems like you do admit that you have something against some wealthiest people in this world, but your price does not focus on them? Make yourself clear first, because the questioner mentioned the people “you and many other artists are protesting against within your work?”, don’t get some of your fans more confused and really think that’s how you state your opinion (well if it is that you have something against the likes of Warren Buffet, then IT will be irony). That question mentioning whom many artists are against is dumb indeed. Art can be just for art’s sake sometimes, gah. Screw the price >.<

  80. Umi on June 9, 2008 at 6:26 am

I thought it might be time to leave a comment again, since I kinda spammed you the last couple… month(?) with my wish to hear NRL live (on June 28th in Düsseldorf cough just so you maaaaybe remember). So all my friends who’ll be there, too and I can do is hoping, that your voice is as good as possible that evening and you may sing it in the 2nd encore, if the songs before it didn’t weaken your voice, huh? sigh I hate sitting and hoping… If I’m lucky enough to be invited to the M&G, maybe I’ll bring some awesome German forest honey with me, so you can have some milk and honey before the show, I heard it should be good for the voice? Anyway, c ya soon 😉 ~Umi

  81. Ilo on June 9, 2008 at 6:06 am

Hey Mike! You´ve seen Rage against the machine in Paris?? Great! I´ve seen them last saturday at Rock im Park…….they were awesome. It felt so good to see and hear these guys togeather on stage again…….. BUT, only 12 days to go and LP is coming to Munich. I hope you´ll rock us much more than Rage…….so here is my request again: Please, please play “Runaway”! It´s my favorite song since I´ve hard it in 2001 live on stage……it made all the people jump around, one of the best feelings I´ve ever had….

So enjoy the rest of the day and your time in Europe! Looking forward to see LP saturday next week!

  82. Xenith on June 9, 2008 at 5:45 am

Mike do you not think its pretty ironic that the only people who are more likely to be able to afford these peaces of art are in fact what you and many other artists are protesting against within your work?

    no roads

  83. Janni_Loves_LP on June 9, 2008 at 5:34 am

Mhmm, nice! Though Mark Ryden’s works kinda upset me.. they’re cute & sad the same way.. Kids & blood.. Weird! =S They remind me some Tim Burton’s film =D Have you watched “Corpse Bride”? Or “The Nightmare Before Christmas”.. that too.. =)

Have a nice day Mikey ^^

  89. Helene on June 9, 2008 at 4:25 am

Mark Ryden’s art is nice but some of his paintings are… scary 😉 and the skull hmmm i understand its made of platinum and diamonds (artists r crazy in most of cases ^^) but human teeth (wtf Oo) its awful 😛

  92. Ezza on June 9, 2008 at 3:12 am

mark ryden’s stuff is pretty cool and a little creapy kinda like joe’s work. the skull on the other hand is kinda wrong…cant wait to see ur new stuff.

  93. Kostas on June 9, 2008 at 3:10 am

Yo, man, I like the whole idea of that thing… reminding ppl of their mortality. it’s kinda creepy in a way too… other than artistic in some deep way, ha. I just took a look at Mark Ryden’s site. I like it… i mean… I’ve no idea of that type of art thing, but it certainly looks great. These pictures are like…. fairy tales of some kind… or sth. That’s what I like about art, man. I like it when it “says” stories in some way. it’s a good thing when it happens in music too. Yeh, I also visited you wife’s site. Ha, she’s a writer.. COOOOOLL! Take care.

  94. maria on June 9, 2008 at 3:07 am

    Your art is tremendous)

  95. maria on June 9, 2008 at 3:07 am

Hi Mike! That’s great! But what the owner of this skul is going to do with? It’s nice picture. It reminds me that we are trying to overcome the crisis of conscience and we are succeding in it) Right? I’m hurriyng to have dinner. So that gonna be tuned next time. And 2) things: Could you post the Cypress Hill song trouble on your muxtape? And could help me in subscribing to LPTV? thanks for the response) See you kinda here. Bye) have a nice day.
