in the spirit of glorious excess

September 13, 2008

the following clip is about an artist named sarah baker, whose art explores and comments on celebrity culture. apparently the artist, as a part of a project, rented a limo, walked around with an entourage, and dressed herself up like a celebrity…then actually got treated like one. it was a simple (and fun) way to invoke the question, “what makes a celebrity?”

on that note, GLORIOUS EXCESS (DIES), the continuation of my art show at JANM in los angeles, will be debuting in january 2009. i’m starting to work on the new pieces now…

Hey Mike … I asked as I once on “Workshop “…. I hope that in 2009, you come to Europe, introducing us to your new job …. hmmmmm it is?!
” is important for Europeans Mike!!!! hello mike, I’d like you to answer me a question! you already thought of doing an exhibition here in Europe? I am of p, and has not suggested here, it has no logic, but in Europe !!!!!!! like to know if at least you think about it …. was very important for the European fans, thank you!!”

The other night I watched a movie called “I Love Your Work” and it reminded me of you. Well, your Art show, posts, discussions here, involving celebrity life… Have you seen it? It surprised me, I didn’t expect it to be so good. I was gonna try to summarized it but it seems that I simply can’t do it justice in a few lines.

looking like a star… yeah… sometimes it seems that’s the dress who make the artist. Look at Mariah Carey, that’s not her voice who sells records, that’s her ass! People juge an artist by their good (or not) looking and the kind of things they do in party… Artists sell albums if they do drugs and alcool, if they are clean, they’re not interesting for the press…

thanks for sharing this one.. (:

as Shinoda_Me said, this one was a great idea.. dress, behave and live the life of a star..!

success with glorious excess die..! :DD

    love yaa. (LLL)

Thanks for posting that video of Sarah Baker’s artwork. It seems like an interesting experiment in social psychology or sociology. (lol) Also, I’m looking forward to seeing the new collection for (Dies). I’m not sure if we’ll see the literal interpretation of the theme, or something more along the lines of Andy Warhol’s 15 minutes of fame… Either way, I expect the pieces to be pretty provocative. πŸ˜‰ As a “rock star,” thanks for challenging us to revisit the way we define fame.

  9. shinoda_me on September 14, 2008 at 5:50 am

man… that was a good idea… dress and behave like a star and live the life of a star… shit .. i didn’t think that was possible at all… almost the best way to see from a different point of view before portraying it…
thanks for sharing!.. have a nice day! =)

i believe that it doesn’t worth to be famous & popular & rich….i think that we have to live our lives however we can!!!!!we have to live as good as we can and don’t let all the celebrity stuff affect us!!!!

this is inpossible but it’s a good test to conrtol our confidence!!!!!!& our self-control too!!!!!

God I’m excited! Does this mean more skate decks? I can’t afford more. 😦 I’ll still by one regardless, haha.

poke Hi. I got bored one day, which happens often, and when I was going through some old stuff I remembered this “Mike Monkey” pixel art thing I did.
Yes, I have a lot of time on my hands.

Can’t wait for your new material for GLORIOUS EXCESS (DIES), I’m sure it will be great. Yeah, it’s sad that people pay more attention to what a person has in wealth or what they wear.

  15. axrinekey on September 13, 2008 at 8:45 pm

Can’t wait for your new pieces! πŸ˜€

It’s great to hear that you’re doing it now πŸ˜€

  16. cuz on September 13, 2008 at 3:44 pm

this is funny and sad at the same time how people get excited and respect the money. behave like a star then you’ll be one (?).

great to hear you’re working on new art show! can’t wait πŸ˜€ love you πŸ™‚

  17. ManBearPig on September 13, 2008 at 2:56 pm

Just yesterday I booked my flight down to LA for the opening of the art show, so Canada represent at JANM in January. πŸ˜€ I’m really looking forward to how you close off your exhibition. You opened with such ferocity, it seems like it might be hard to top. But, I’m sure you have a dozen tricks up your sleeve. 1/24 will be quite awesome (and, not to mention, the 5 year anniversary of my first LP show). Good luck (not that you really need it).

PS: I still think you should add this to the collection:

  18. rockermeg on September 13, 2008 at 1:52 pm

    Yeah man London rocks.

Thats so shocking the response she got just from dressing differently…

At 2:47 they’re in that gallery with the art and stuff-I’ve been there…it was basically empty when I went though LOL

Awesome, can’t wait to see the new stuff

YAYYERS!!!!!!!!!! – does a dance – I can’t wait for January, (the coldest month of the year). I’m curious to see if the second part will be like the fall of this celebrity from his stardom, or him dying literally. I’m also curious to see if you will do another trilogy.
Oh, by the way, I’ve noticed a lot of us have been trying to convince you to go on and get a gallery. Don’t do it. DA staff have gotten kind of rude lately, and will come into your gallery and simply pick and choose what to delete, copyright violation or drawn completely from scratch. It’s not as fun as it used to be, and not a good place to get noticed since there are too many people there.

Wow Mike! I thought you’ve created all your paintings already! Nice to hear good news from you!

That celeb problem made you sad coz a man who achieved some great goals in his life is on the same level with a biotch who only put her glamorous clothes on and ….. everyone knows how the story goes ))))

  21. I_B_Long on September 13, 2008 at 10:44 am

its amazing how nice people are to you when they think you are famous. i used to get confused for some reality tv “star” and people were really nice to me. soon as i told them i had never been on antm or whatever they were talking about, things changed quickly lol. i think societies and especially TV’s obsession with celebrity is rediculous. thats why i dont watch tv anymore. i dont care who J-lo is marrying this week. only things i watch are infomania and campaign update…oh and lptv lol.
    cool post!
