doing it

September 28, 2008

since we’ve been talking about the ways musicians can survive with or without label support lately, i couldn’t help but put up a link to this guy. i’m pretty sure he has no major label support, but he’s making a name from himself, making a living, and making interesting music. his name is ronald jenkees.

i shot ronald an email letting him know i shouted him out on this site. here was his response:

thanks a ton for the blog post! It’s extremely surreal to know that you’ve actually heard my music and dig what I do. I couldn’t have asked for a cooler and more surprising plug on a Sunday afternoon (found out about it yesterday). That made my day.

Working without a label is probably more difficult in some ways because you have to do everything yourself and that can impact your actual music time, but it’s also extremely rewarding to be the one personally responsible for all that stuff and getting it done. Right now I wouldn’t have it any other way.

If you ever want to shout back or discuss anything music, I’ll always be down for that. You guys have inspired me with your music MANY times and I can say without exaggeration that some of your tracks are among my most-played ever.

  1. ritzifying on November 23, 2008 at 8:17 pm

“If you ever want to shout back or discuss anything music, I’ll always be down for that.”

Did you ever get back in touch with Ronald?

  2. Simone on October 20, 2008 at 9:12 pm

That guy is a fuckin’ gun! I’ve never heard his stuff before but it sounds really amazing… and the best thing is that he’s just loving what he’s doing and just does it for fun, it’s great! Maybe he should do some gigs and get more recognition. I’d love to record someone with even HALF the music ability he has, most local bands and solo artists i’ve recorded recently – well, they all sound the same, it’s boring and nothing new. If he came down to Aus, I’d record RJ’s stuff in a flash… He could even be in a band; bands would love to have his artistic creativity. I say good luck to him and I hope he continues with his music.

  3. Ellz on October 14, 2008 at 5:31 pm

Dude… RJ is the shiz. Been listening to him for years now. Good find

  4. SimplyMode on October 5, 2008 at 12:19 pm

    Well, he seems happy! (:

That dude’s got some mad skills though,

&& I think it’s awesome how he’s doing it all by himself.

  5. YoungVito on October 2, 2008 at 10:03 am

Absolutely stunned by this guys key skills, dude murders that midi!
So of course, I just had to check his YouTube channel and loved all of his creations.
I love coming across hidden gems like this that are not only talented, but do it for the fact that they love to do it.
In todays music industry, its kinda hard to keep up when people will sell their souls just to make a quick buck.
So it’s great to see that alot of people still genuinely love music more than paychecks.

From a musician standpoint, this video was nothing less than inspiring.
It has somewhat opened another door in my mind to show me that music is quite more than just melody.

  6. Jackie on October 1, 2008 at 12:22 pm

wow…i went to his website to listen to the rest of his music and not just that song was good but all of his creations were amazing and diverse from other beats you hear today…true talent and the way he constructs his beats is really impressive in the way that it all flows together. nice find mike!!!

  7. Truculentangel on September 30, 2008 at 7:13 pm

ok,um,WOW!that is talent rite there,i already posted it on my myspace…that is really sick,i,love the beat…that guy,i no he’ll get signed to somebody one day,one day he’ll be recognized for his hard work=) that is amazing..i want to download it XD…mike, its nice to see that you recognize people&their talents, even if they aren’t big name people…its really tough out there in the music business…but its nice to see regular people get their work publicized or noticed&see their hard work pay off…all you gotta dew is believe XD good luck Ronald Jenkees!!!!bye, good nite guys =) p3ace luv respeKt

  8. Doomguy13 on September 30, 2008 at 6:47 pm

Yeah. This guy is amazing. This is one of the guys that just shows me that it doesn’t matter if you are backed by a fancy record label, you just need to be good and use what you have.

  9. lucky_cat on September 30, 2008 at 4:31 pm

wow. ” … but it’s also extremely rewarding to be the one personally responsible for all that stuff and getting it done. Right now I wouldn’t have it any other way.” … I totally agree with him. I´m not a musician, I have no idea how that business works. But right now, when I read his response, it comes to my mind that he captured the most important point – in my experience: to be able to work independently can´t be payed … doesn´t matter what kind of business. OMG … sorry for the mistranslations, if there are any. I´m sooo tired ! Good night.

  10. Ranger111133 on September 30, 2008 at 2:52 pm

OMG THIS GUYS AMAZING!!! i love his work its awsome

  11. Curiosa on September 30, 2008 at 11:15 am

Wow, this guy’s great. I like his music. He’s right though, it’s a lot of work doing things yourself.

    OH MY F****** GOD!

  21. thenewLinkinPete on September 29, 2008 at 8:26 am

what a cool guy, I really like what he says in the end, reminds me of my guitarplaying
Also this reminds me that it would be cool to see a bit more about how you guys make songs, I mean you tell things in your album booklet and on the dvd, but for example to see through one song, how it came about and changed and why did you ended up with the solutions you did with it. It was really cool to see for example how the melody came togerher with LOATR on the dvd. And I know you guys think things over. Don´t know where and how this could be possible, though.. maby on the next dvd?
(btw I haven´t stolen this alias, I used to be “LinkinPete”, but I had to change it)

  22. Helene on September 29, 2008 at 7:16 am

  24. Joanie_LP on September 29, 2008 at 4:52 am

I see Timbaland in his work 😀

which remind me, won’t there be a LP/Timabalnd collab? There was a rumour about a song called “Underground” but no one remembers probably. Hope there will be, just like the VMA’s 2007. That would be AWESOME!

And I’m a great Timba fan, therefore, this guy’s’ music rocks!

  25. Kian on September 29, 2008 at 4:47 am

he is realy realy amazing.the music is very can he do it???he IS the show(alone he makes the show)I think he is very good and he can go so far…..

  26. Senzaikyuu on September 29, 2008 at 2:29 am

Whether or not u r part of a major company or indie, the music that u make is the element that matters the most.I don’t think that u can survive[which is the most difficult part in the musical industry] even with the support of the biggest company unless u do great music. kudos to that guy .The only word capable of describing that guy is RESPEC*T .

  27. dulcemdl on September 29, 2008 at 12:46 am

here’s the answer to that is needed for being famous, be good artist, and have youtube !!!!!… and lucky to be seen by a Mike Shinoda !!!!! 🙂 kissssssss

  28. sassi_lp on September 28, 2008 at 11:58 pm

heya Mike, I must say that this guys is good, I enjoy to see that he is one of those fellow musicians that just experiments a lot and doesn’t mind being outside the box, very nice!
    IT’S MY 18TH BIRTHDAY TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😀
and i got a studio recording session from my parents, which is jsut incredible, so once i’m done recording my favorite self-written song (probably Certain Shade Of Green, yeah I know Incubus also has a Certain Shade Of Green song, but mine has nothing to do wiht that) i might put a link up here so people can check it out. hope you have a marvellous day on my birthday:)

She said because you can rap…

No worries, I’ve explained to her you’re a half Jap. 😉

It’s really driving you nuts that some fans aren’t getting the whole be famous without a label, huh? Just remember Mike, I GET IT. Promoting yourself without a label is fun. I have so many friends at my college right now, it’s a cute fanbase. All the people I know, know more people, which has a nice pyramid effect. All my rights are still mine. Ronald Jenkees sounds like a familiar name. He’s got this look on his face, while he play likes, “holy shit I can’t believe I just made that sound”. Ever get that feeling, when you create something, then look at it or read it a while later and wonder how the hell you ever did that? I think that’s an out of body experience.

  37. msgirl on September 28, 2008 at 6:31 pm

MIKE…….. I THINK U R THE ONLY ONE WHO UNDERSTANDS UR FANS…U READ OUR COMMENTS A LOT…AND ANSWER IT….BUT BUT….i am not good at my english at all…..and i can’t write a good comment…..:'( what must i do???what must i do to answer u for my questions, comments…:'( i think i am the unluckiest fan in the world…:(but i promise u i will do my best to understand ur comments, and write amazing comments..bye…:)

That was insane!!! I didn’t know what to expect at first, but great share MIke

I was just curious, which are you “more” proud of getting “What I’ve done” on Guitar Hero or “One Step Closer” on Rock Band. I know it’s like choosing between children, but I was just wondering.

    Keep on “Staying Crunchy”…lol

  40. hannxmann on September 28, 2008 at 4:06 pm

that is so amazing! it really shows how you can use a popular website like youtube to help promote your talents. major record label or not its deffinately helping to make a name for himself. if youtube was available back when you started, would you have used it to help promote linkin park? well anyway, great link mike! 🙂

  41. cuz on September 28, 2008 at 4:02 pm

  45. rockermeg on September 28, 2008 at 1:32 pm

Man,when I first started watching this video I just thought “man what a nerd,he just can’t play guitar so he’s doing it on a keyboard”

But then I started listening to it more closely and noticed how the song progressed and it really is an amazing piece of music, very effective.

But I can honestly say I’ve never heard of him…

Not trying to be pervy Mike but the title doesn’t really fit too well with this blog and it just sounds wrong XD maybe thats just my immature mind speaking,,haha…

Heard you guys have started the writing process for the 4th album – good luck,i’m on the edge of my seat and i know its gonna be phenominal!

    he is really awesome!! 🙂
how did you find this video?

  55. mshinoda20PERU on September 28, 2008 at 11:27 am

Hey Mike!!!, it sounds really good!!!

I Know that you support the music, but I (we) also need your Help with other subject. I love the Animals and maybe you know the incidents in China (Slaughter of cats and dogs for the market of the skins and the meat, bile farms of bears, etc) so I would want that you demonstrate in your paintings this pain of the animal or the cruelty that is against them, and like band, can make a song against that, because there is much injustice against the animal. I hope that someday all we pruned to respect them. Thanks ….. in serious I admire you so much!!!! more info about this:
