this gadget came out a while ago…i have to say, when i heard that there was an “iPod for books” i thought, “maybe, but it has really got to be a great product on a ton of levels…i’ll wait until i see one.”

i just saw one, and i’m a believer.

if you read a lot (or want to), but hate carrying around a bunch of heavy books, this thing is a lifesaver. the face of it literally looks like paper, but it’s a digital screen. it downloads tons of materials, from newspapers to best-sellers, is is smaller and lighter than a single hardcover. no computer needed, no syncing, no cables. it connects to amazon wirelessly (not WiFi, it’s better: it’s on cel-phone like network, available anywhere, and you don’t even need to sign up for a plan–so easy!). you simply order and receive books to read. you can even sample the first chapter of many books, to see if you want to download the whole thing. the kindle even allows you to take notes, and it downloads common file formats like microsoft word, .jpg, .gif, and .pdf–all you have to do is email them to your kindle.

basically, it’s a home-run for amazon.

to buy or read more about it, go it here:

PS – based on seeing this, plus the comments i have heard about this site being slightly hard to read, have led me to a simple re-design…coming soon!

This totally reminds me of what Kanye West would put on his site.

    Cuz he’s cool like that..

  2. Andizzle on October 8, 2008 at 6:09 am

am I the only one who still uses their library card? I must say, I have a thing for old books with water stains and peeling spines and dust jackets – then you feel like you are really reading something, you know??

  3. rockermeg on October 6, 2008 at 9:26 am

    Wow that’s a great idea

Hahaa,so that’s why everything is white! I liked the last design but I’m sure the next will be awesome

  4. nillp on October 5, 2008 at 8:37 am

this is such a great idea.. it’s better than carry lots of books..

but at the same time, i think that the magic of reading real books, will ever exist for me.. so, i guess that i’m not going to have one of this since i really love to “touch” the book and the pages to read.. especially the old ones..!

anyway. it’s a great invention but i really do not think that this gonna replace the real books..! (:

  5. Linkin_Betty on October 4, 2008 at 5:42 am

it looks good, better then real books. but i don’t use it. i use playstation portable like book.

  6. axrinekey on October 4, 2008 at 1:38 am

    Cool gadget, I must say.
    Must be really convenient.

But seriously, I dunno if Malaysia gets this news yet since, we’re pretty slow. ๐Ÿ˜›

  7. Mikeshi_Linkfort on October 3, 2008 at 2:55 pm

The future already nearby… This device is practical enough, but all the same it is more pleasant to read through the paper book… But unfortunately time dictates conditions… From on rocky painting we have passed to papyruses, from papyruses up to books, and from books up to this device…

  8. Ivyy on October 3, 2008 at 2:40 pm

    i think i prefer real books…

  9. l_kotovicz on October 3, 2008 at 11:43 am

    I needed this ipod =/

  10. tinkerbella26 on October 3, 2008 at 11:16 am

omgoodness we depend on technology way too much.. Great idea though..Not too fond of the design though..I’m sure there will be a thinner version next, jk.. Anyways, have a great weekend!!

  11. Madlen on October 3, 2008 at 10:26 am

As cool as this thing looks,i prefer carrying around books:)It’s part of the…magic for me ๐Ÿ˜€

  12. Snails on October 3, 2008 at 9:28 am

wow thats pretty cool, and would save a lot of hassle carrying tons of books around for uni!

  13. onoselena on October 3, 2008 at 9:26 am

Mike . I think , if U’re not the singer. U should be a very good salesman. (haha)

Anyway, thank you for your sharing. This is the quite good product.

  14. LenneAB on October 3, 2008 at 7:59 am

That’s really cool, especially when you have to travel a lot. But the design is actually kinda ugly, isn’t it?
I’m cool with your site btw, no need to change.
The only thing you could do something about is the LogIn procedure.
It’s annoying, go there, do this, go back…ugh!

  15. Anna_4 on October 3, 2008 at 7:53 am

    I don’t read much..
But I like that.. It’s strange, but it’s very useful to that people who are reading all the time.
    Take care.

I like your blog, and you Art is awesome! .D

  16. dora on October 3, 2008 at 6:56 am

thats a cool stuff….!i wish i could afford one!

  17. MarishkaLP on October 3, 2008 at 6:19 am

that’s a cool thing, though it’s really expensive, i feel good about science is going on developing some interesting and useful things! thanks for the news!

  18. Shinodabestfriend on October 3, 2008 at 6:11 am

    oooh this is strange!!!

  19. Gabry94LinkinParkfan23 on October 3, 2008 at 6:03 am

heyy mike! the gadget is lovelyy!!! i wanna buy it! (… of course if my daddy wants.. lol).. 4 me the site isnt so difficult to read… and i just luv it.. and u ๐Ÿ˜€ byeee kizz ^^

  20. YuN_RoCks on October 3, 2008 at 5:50 am

though I love this site the way it is..RE-DESIGN RE-DESIGN RE-DESIGN YAY!!
anyway, about the kindle..really a great idea, but, there is something special in having a book (as heavy as it can be) in your hands and scroll the pages. there is something special in cutting your fingers doing it too. and in finding weird and uncomfortable positions to read in bed. I’m just not ready to give it up yet.

  21. Kalini on October 3, 2008 at 5:49 am

Oh, I still remember the time in the university, when I had to travel to my hometown for the holidays with all the heavy textbooks to prepare there for the exams. This gagdget could be very useful for the students. Regarding the reading for pleasure, I prefer the book. I don’t have enough time to read and when I travel I don’t need more than one book. Krassie K.

  22. Shinizzle3 on October 3, 2008 at 5:25 am

    agree with kathrine…ok if u travel a lot…it might be good but..for a normal person..i don’t know…

  23. keineAhnung on October 3, 2008 at 3:57 am

well, I think it’s a good thing if you’re on the road a lot…mainly because of the newspaper stuff (I know what it’s like to try to find and buy ‘your’ newspaper abroad…totally sucks)…but I do agree with most people on here: nothing can EVER replace a ‘real’ book (and nothing’s cooler than a bookshop or even a library…if I had enough money I’d maybe even set one up in my appartment ;p)

  24. kathrine on October 3, 2008 at 1:34 am

sorry mike but i have to say i disagree….Its a hole different MAGIC to hold and smell your new book,to feel every page and adore the cover….!!!I’m not saying no to it but it’s not for me and i believe that the same way that every book cant replace the teacher the same way it’s not going to replace the TRUE BOOKS!!! and Im a believer too!!!

  25. Kronah on October 3, 2008 at 1:24 am

I’ve been waiting for this technology to get better. Border’s has promoted a similar device by Sony for quite some time. It still needs work but this is a step in the right diection. Thanks for pointing it out.

  26. I_B_Long on October 3, 2008 at 1:03 am

it does have at least one major drawback and thats the price.last time i checked it was “on sale” of 300 bucks. i could get alot of good books for tht price, aside from the fact that i already have quite a collection. i would LOVE to have one, since i love to read, but for that price, i dont think so. my husband is a soldier, we dont get paid that much. i guess i’ll have to keep reading the old fashioned way.
cool post tho, makes me wonder, what kind of books do you read?

  27. magzimgo on October 2, 2008 at 11:53 pm

mike i have to disagree. with all positive sides of kindle, negative are much more. first is the price. 360$ for this reading device that works ? too much, if we remember that amazon sell it like ‘service’. second – design, it’s not great, not beautiful. i got feeling that this ‘book’ came from 90’s. third – it’s not open for developers. and what’s worst, kindle cant even open .doc or .pdf formats? i’d rather buy bunch of my favorite hardcover books then this stuff.
how about sony reader as alternative? it’s much cheaper, and support open documents formats.
p.s. cant wait to see new design. ๐Ÿ™‚

  28. ZU13KA on October 2, 2008 at 10:12 pm

cool gadget and im guesin sci fi writers around the world are goin see told ya so…lol bt anyway…predictive fiction aside, i agree with the general sentiment-nothing beats holdin a book in your hands, ive read hundreds, yea im a geek i knw, and its just so great when u get 1 that u hvnt read, open it up and the feel of the paper just blows u away. lol ok so sme ppl arnt as interestd in readn 4 fun bt i think anythin that promotes readn has my vote so keep the nifty gadgets comin, hve a gd day mike tata.

  29. ShadowerLiltani on October 2, 2008 at 9:09 pm

Odd gadget, yet, highly intriguing at the same time. Something my dad would be very into. I personally think it looks chunky, and not quite as portable as the MP3 player we’re all used too. Reminds me of the look old Windows 95 computers used to have. I don’t know who this being marketed towards, either. By the way, to those who come on here that know me off LPU, tomorrow is my birthday ๐Ÿ˜€ 22 years down, and if I’m gonna make it to 100, 78 years to go XD

  30. KATHYxx on October 2, 2008 at 7:52 pm

I seriously doubt that textbook compainies would subscribe to such a thing… so it has limited use for me.
Also the picture makes it look really thick. they can do better.

PS: Please let sparkart do a good job with the remodel…. i really don’t trust them as they screw up a lot -your website looks horrible in linux. I can’t read the headers.., and its the only large site that does so, plus an index/archive of blog posts is missing ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

  31. ms_shock on October 2, 2008 at 7:52 pm

YYeeeaaahh! !!!!!! New designe is COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  32. HJP007 on October 2, 2008 at 6:58 pm

If you can view full blogs can you also post, comment, or edit in the blog as well? I see that there’s a keypad on it too. A live video news feed would be pretty cool too.

  33. zimminator on October 2, 2008 at 6:37 pm

dude how come i have never heard of this before? thats crazy cool! they should do that for schools, but when it comes to reading for fun, im gonna have to say paper. i love holding books, and you get to see how much left you have to read before its done, and you are happy when you see how much you’ve read. idk, im oldskool i guess. but god that would save my back if we could use it for skool!

  34. SdwOTD on October 2, 2008 at 5:36 pm

Oooh, forgot about this. While I agree with Murry, I do believe it would be good for college students. I wonder if you could put your college text books on it since my uni sells us digital books now… Anyway, it’ll be a cool thing to watch evolve.
Also you should check this out. Its funny as hell and has to do with books =D

  35. dulcemdl on October 2, 2008 at 5:20 pm

I was completely enchanted with this magnificent amazon Kindle ….. is incredible ….. : O

  36. sweet_girl on October 2, 2008 at 4:47 pm

That is just what I need I’m so tired to carry those heavy books,
Hey! Mike Do you regret something to bad??
kisses… remember love ya ( forever in my heart)

  37. Dj on October 2, 2008 at 4:11 pm

I’m with Murry and lucky_cat, I just can’t let go of my actual books. It’s the smell of the paper and ink, for sure. Maybe if the Kindle looked different too. I saw someone with one on my last plane ride, and I just didn’t like how it looked. But that would have been a godsend for college!

  38. lucky_cat on October 2, 2008 at 4:03 pm

Ha! I was a bookseller (in my first life) and I have to admit at this point Iยดm very oldschool. I like to smell the printing ink … and all the different kinds of paper, ahhh! itยดs a science in its own right, were you ever in a printing press ? I know that thing has a lot of preferences … I donยดt need it in the moment.
little redesign? other typography or reverse the colors? hmmmm ….

  39. spraypaintNinkpens on October 2, 2008 at 4:01 pm

If America wasn’t in another great depression I could buy it… Unfortunately the economy is terrrrrrrrrible says charles barkley.

  40. murry on October 2, 2008 at 3:37 pm

Ahh… This one I don’t know about, Mike. As a writer, I realize fewer and fewer people are buying books and this might do for literature what the MP3 has done for the music industry, but I’m a romantic about books the way some people are romantic about vinyl records. I see the environmental argument, too, but I just love books. Especially old books. It’s the smell, I think. But, whatever. I felt this way about Newspapers converging to online publication, and I’ve adapted to that. I’m just old and I don’t like change. Haha.

  41. alyeska39 on October 2, 2008 at 3:29 pm

Wow, besides the fact that I am not going to buy it, that thing would be pretty cool to have.
Re-design sounds interesting, guess I’ll wait and see how it turns out.

  42. Hybr1d_7h3ory on October 2, 2008 at 3:17 pm

That is pretty niffty I must say. Good to see you hanging out with the Def Tones about time they get some new stuff out. Cant wait for the new re-design

Sorry for the short post, gotta head to class.

    Catcha lata Mike

  43. antje on October 2, 2008 at 2:51 pm

Hey, ok for the college textbooks it’s a nice thing.
But when I read a book “for fun”…. I prefer to feel the paper in my hand….. not everything has to be digital.
Im sorry for my terrible english.. :(( ….

  44. Carla on October 2, 2008 at 2:42 pm

Dang, you don’t know how much I would rather carry that than be lugging my textbooks + laptop all over school. D:! Sadly I don’t even have any digital textbooks this year.

  45. soyuneik on September 24, 2008 at 11:54 pm

For a second I had thought I click my little IGoogle Page and then clicked my “Coolest Gadgets” widgamacallit.
(yea ..i just made that up). So nonono..this is all wrong.

  46. Anstice on September 24, 2008 at 11:44 pm

Oh my God. Do you know how amazing that would be for college textbooks? Ugh, you’d save hundreds of dollars with that thing! I’m totally taken. I want one now. I could store everything I wanted on there. Now, if only I could find that million dollars that was supposed to fall out of the sky…
