FIRST GLORIOUS EXCESS (DIES) PAINTING

October 13, 2008

First, a refresher course: in June of this year, I debuted the show and concept in GLORIOUS EXCESS (BORN)–a series of work following a fictional celebrity character who is filthy rich, morally vacant, and good at one thing: being a celebrity. He’s not a rock star, he’s not an actor, he’s not famous for any particular talent; he simply became famous because he’s good at it, and plays by the rules of “star culture” in order to maintain his status.

I knew when I started, over a year ago, that this character’s addiction to celebrity status would inevitably grow to a point where he could no longer feed it. There would be a time when the expectations of him would be too high, the emotional baggage would be too heavy, he will have tried every trick. There would be only one way to reach the next level. That next level is what january’s show is all about.

In January he will die!

Initially, I thought it might be fun to have three parts to the show: birth, life, and death. but the “life” section felt unnecessary. His story is a meteoric rise and catastrophic crash-and-burn. And then he will be gone. The fun part will be figuring out how it’s going to work.

In the meantime, I’ll be posting some images of the stuff in progress, the ideas i’m thinking about, and related materials…come back often, I don’t want you to miss anything.

I really wanna know how did you make those drip paints.

    Hi Mr. Bishounen,😀

I’m taking an art class this semester [Color Theory], and we have this research project where we have to pick an artist and tell about them. I picked you because I really do love your work and would love to give you some hype. I was wondering if you could post a quick blog about what colors you use and why you use them. The colors for the Diamonds, Spades, Hearts, Clubs set seemed more muted, was there a reason why? I dunno if you’ll find this comment in time, hopefully before Monday, if you have the time.😀

    Thank you!❤ CJ

Looks awesome! I was trying to earn enough money to be able to fly out to LA and go to Dies but I can’t now, I can’t find a job. It sucks really bad. I hate living in Massachusetts.

Hey just wanted to know how you think up ideas for each individual painting? I am currently doing a set of paintings called “Dystopia” where i am doing paintings of everything that is wrong with the world, well not everything as there aint enough paint ion world to do that many painting but you get my point. And i am going to follow it up with a set of paintings called “Utopia” where it is all good in world! So i was just curious on the thought process that goes into your paintings just to help me out somewhat? Or if you had any ideas that would be awesome?
Good luck with all your paintings i am very excited about seeing them.

I love the whole concept of your pieces. Living, dying, how an excess of too much will eventually kill you. I have a feeling that this series of Glorious Excess (Dies) will be much, much darker than Born. At least, I hope it will be, haha. I like what you have so far. =]

Quick question Mike (sorry it’s not Art related) but do you remember the M&G for the RDS, Ireland show in June- the week before the UK Projekt Rev date? And more specifically, the CD you signed for me that kinda shocked you a little bit? The unofficial one that you said the manufactures ‘might get in trouble’ for making’? Anyway, it’s called ‘Linkin Park Ultra Rare Trax Vol.1’ and was bought from a grotty little CD shop in England- for ₤18- i think the guy knew how special/rare it was. It has the the HT Ep songs, Xero demo tape songs and most of the HT demos (In The End, Crawling, Super Xero etc) on. Just wondered if you remembered and if you wanted more info on it?

Hey Mike, I was wondering, you say you just started work on Dies, but how long does it take you to paint all the pieces and put the art show together? It’s just that January seems pretty close and after seeing the Born pieces, it looks like you could have put a few years work into them!

So, from concept to the finished piece, how long would it take you to put an art show like this together? What’s the process like?

  20. MichaelFromGermany on October 15, 2008 at 10:07 am

Wow… I just love the stuff you do. It’s so nice and inspirering. I wish I was just a bit talented as you are to do stuff like that but i’m not. I mean I have ideas and pictures in my head but I just cant’t bring it on paper…that sucks xD . My sister got the art skills in our family … lol … but there’s one thing I can still do: Admire art by you and other talanted people who can change my world with their paintings and stuff🙂

  21. Yuky_04 on October 15, 2008 at 9:49 am

    very,very good for your drawings!=)
you are my idol in graphic’s words!

  22. Henna on October 15, 2008 at 9:26 am

mike i really love how u not only do music but art too. and the way that art means and portrays somethin. It’s so clear that u don’t just dip ur brush in paint, and write ur famous name at the bottom. After proceeds go 2 a good cause and i find that inspirational. I’m 16 and from england. I do art too.My project is on ‘wraps’. and i’ve got an idea 4 my final piece already in mind: a man wrapped in tattoos, depicting his crimes. it was inspired by ur glorious excess (born). Wat do u think?
I think ur idea of the man dieing is great and i wish u the best of luck in it. You’ve got a great concept, loads of talent and i’m sure ur paintings will b a success. .x

    luv ya❤

  24. YuN_RoCks on October 15, 2008 at 7:29 am

hey there mikey! I felt like the guy would have a bad end. and it is quite obvious if you think about it..a guy like him cannot have more of what he’s already getting from life. lots of famous people reached the top with the end of their lives. painters, musicians, actors, lots of them became more famous with their death. so well, I’m curious to see how you’ll paint the concept! and keep us posted, I love too see your pre-productions =]

  25. axrinekey on October 15, 2008 at 6:47 am

    “In January he will die!”
    LOL!

Allowing us to be a part of the finale is an honor. At times, inspiration can be fleeting. But when it nests in your heart & soul, it’s all consuming. You’ve captured the very essence of human fraility. The deep red roses are amazing! Is it acrylic paint outlined in black ink? The colors just pop! I know your paintings will be amazing! I think to see your art in person would be a once in a lifetime experience! I want to attend it! Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your creative unfolding. P.S. I will camp out at your website. Hah, I promise I’m NOT a nutso kind of camper. Just a fan who happens to appreciate art!🙂

  32. amp101 on October 14, 2008 at 6:54 pm

I absolutely love this concept! It’s simplistic, but it reflects the star-obsessed culture in which we live in realistically. What I admire even more is the fact that you continually update us with the progress of your art. It means a lot! Awesome job, and all the best with the upcoming project!

  33. pepper on October 14, 2008 at 6:33 pm

It’s looking great already Mike!! I can’t wait to see what happens to our favorite limelight-hungry skeleton!!! Post pics constantly ’cause I’ll for sure keep checkin back!

  34. dulcemdl on October 14, 2008 at 6:23 pm

Come the next ! he was excellent, I loved the idea, the concept of translation, the theme, everything ! loved to know the next theme! loved to see live, and do my own translation personally, but I’m on the other side of the world! well you could do an exhibition in Europe! WHY NOT???? think about it in the next year …”You have MANY OF YOUR FAN ART HERE IN EUROPE ….” KISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

  35. Ezza on October 14, 2008 at 6:02 pm

hahaha you sound like this is your fave part of the story! killing off the main character! lol cant wait to see the pics of the paintings since i cant actually get to the other side of the planet for the show XD… i really do hate not having money!!…. could you please please please post some tips/ techniques you use…especially how you get the paint to run down the canvas. i’ve tried and failed numerous time and i cant get it to work the way i want.

  36. VampirePrincess on October 14, 2008 at 5:58 pm

Amazing work as always Mike, I enjoyed the other paintings you did for the last show and I can’t wait to see the ones you have planned for this one. Quick question that’s been on my mind for awhile now. Have you ever been down the 100 block of North Niagara in Burbank? If so then I think I’ve seen your before, if not it was probably someone who looked like you from the side lol.

    Once again wonderful job Mike!

  37. Keres on October 14, 2008 at 4:21 pm

I can’t wait to see what’s going to come out of your head this time! The last exhibit was amazing. The pictures you just posted look great so far. I love the roses in the one picture. I wish I could see the exhibit when it opens, but that’s not going to happen because I’m across the country in Pittsburgh, Pa. You should think about taking an exhibit on the road. You could easily get a showing at the Andy Warhol Museum or something.
Can’t wait to see the finished product, I’m sure it’ll be awesome.
    ~Elyse
P.S- I hope you like the monkey I gave you at Projekt Rev. in Burgettstown. I also hope it didn’t drive the other five crazy!!

  38. numbrocker02 on October 14, 2008 at 4:10 pm

Your art looks amazing!! I wish I could see it in person, but I live too far away.😦 Oh well, I guess I have to settle with online pics. I hope you are ok. I heard about the LA fire. Could you give us an update about you guys, especially Chester! It would set my worries at ease. By the way, I really like the new DVD name. Can’t wait to buy it! Though I do wish you would add Papercut, and Points of Authority.

  39. Truculentangel on October 14, 2008 at 3:55 pm

the last show was pretty amazing, the paintings…i know it took a lot of hard work and dedication to it,but i know you’ll do great on the last part😄 your one of the artists i like the most(sure there are a lot of other famous artists, but im more interested into your kind of art work it,its freakin awsome XD!!!) do like you did for the last album, experiment with different types of ideas&sources, you saw how everybody took to the album…i know it’ll be great =) good luck mike, take care

Hey Mike, it’s great to see you keep us up to date. Can’t wait for your new art and can’t wait to see the exitus of Glorious Excess (well sounds curious but you know what I mean….) …. It would be great if I could see your art show in LA. Unfortunately – again – its impossible. Im from germany…😦
Wish you all the best!!! Take care…🙂

  50. Mikeshi_Linkfort on October 14, 2008 at 12:15 pm

He will die!? Unexpectedly! (crash-and-burn) or to stand and burn. It is remarkable that you have started to work above new pictures. With impatience I shall wait for an exhibition, necessarily add a photo from an exhibition on blog!
By the way! I see you draw a paint “MONTANA”….. Very good paint, it is interesting how many she in America costs stands?
    I wish you infinite INSPIRATION!

  51. NataliaForgotten on October 14, 2008 at 12:13 pm

You’ve got an amazing talent, Mike. I hope you’ll put some pictures of your work here, on your blog, because I don’t think I’ll go to US to the galery from Europe ^^””” But I wish to.
    And I also hope you’re fine.🙂

  56. NeneLP88 on October 14, 2008 at 11:35 am

Oh Dear! That’s what the Dies stand for! Poor him. He has almost become a friend to us. We literally saw his birth through your pictures of canvas and paint. And now he dies. Just few months of super-life and then it’s all gone. =(

Well, the idea is amazing. I’m sure it will be as interesting as the Born part of it. I’m all excited about your future work-in-progress posts =D

Plus, i agree. The “Life” part is pretty unnecessary in my opinion. I think his life has already been well described on the “Born” part. But anyway, 3 parts would have been better than 2 (us stupid fans who can never have enough of anything XD) =P

    ONE IDEA
Hi Mike, I hope you do post more pictures as you move forward in your paintings… for us who can’t go to the exhibitions.
You should do like a fast forward video of one of your paintings so we can see the whole process, start to finish, you can put it in your video section…

Also, I hope you are not at all close to the fires, if you are… very sorry to hear…

  59. graveguard on October 14, 2008 at 10:57 am

    Hi Mike,
the pictures of your new works are great. I can’t wait to see the final works.
    But I have another question…
Why do drop 4 Songs from the next DVD? Can you tell us one GOOD reason why you have to drop those songs? You always dedicate Papercut to the hardcore fans… So I think this song has to be on the dvd. The other songs are great, too. This is a great disappointment for us “hardcore” fans😦

  60. stardust001 on October 14, 2008 at 10:53 am

Amazing. It’ll be amazing, like always. I can’t wait for the new series of paintings. Sounds effin dope.

  62. sterilepoon on October 14, 2008 at 10:12 am

i really love the background treatments. my professor is forever reminding us not to neglect the background but it never seems to sink in so, this has got me excited to try some new things with my work. the roses look flawless, the colors are brilliant, and the blue figure kind of reminds me of one, chester bennington😮

  63. Trip on October 14, 2008 at 10:05 am

Thank you for the photo of the first painting and for the detailed description, as well! It’s great that you can explain your artistic ideas: “His story is a meteoric rise and catastrophic crash-and-burn”. Very well said!!! Good luck and enjoy your work! Krassie K.

  81. Senzaikyuu on October 14, 2008 at 6:33 am

i wonder if it’s possible for someone to see these paintings from the glorious excess art show and not wanting to be an artist..i mean they are really influential and they are awakening wierd feelings..

  82. PankakeMunky on October 14, 2008 at 6:27 am

i love the concept of having the character die. for some reason, i wasn’t really expecting that. i thought you used the name “glorious excess (dies)” as a symbolic meaning of having the character lose all of his celeb status and that’s the end of it. i can’t wait to see or hear more about the new paintings.🙂

  83. missbluesonicspeed on October 14, 2008 at 5:43 am

Mike, thank you so much for keeping us informed about your artwork. You’ve got amazing talent and your work is very inspiring. One thing that I am interested in about your art is the technique about how you do it. Do you spray paint the background and then apply paint with a brush? Also, what kind of paints do you use?

  84. WhiteAngel on October 14, 2008 at 4:51 am

ooh, the second one with the roses is awesome even now xD
I wish I could draw like that.. I mean, I want to go to the art school, but im too lazy.. By the way, im in 7th grade, so its kinda too late…

  85. AS_21 on October 14, 2008 at 3:47 am

we also don’t wanna miss anything xD I love roses you make! they’re so datailed and real! amazing! I’d love to have such talent to pass feelings and stories by paintings..

TO ANALOG GIRL- lol… hey Mike, I got some Indian music on TAPES. I have a tapeplayer. I love Indian techno, but the Indian dude that loaned me the tapes made a pass. Foo.

  105. ShadowerLiltani on October 13, 2008 at 10:01 pm

I figured you would probably kill him off. I’m just dying to see how. (no pun intended) BTW, does anyone in this ever intend to make a pun? Pun is a weird sounding word, it seems like it should be some sort of below the waist bodypart.

  106. Anstice on October 13, 2008 at 9:47 pm

Oh, Mike, the rose one is incredible! Like, no offense, but I’m a very abstract type of person, so a lot of the first show’s work didn’t appeal to me much (not that it wasn’t amazing art). But the roses and the floating head in that one are absolutely spectacular. Gorgeous.

  107. Noda89 on October 13, 2008 at 9:47 pm

Omg, I feel like sketching now reaches for a pen

Thanks for keeping us posted, Mike! GLXS (Born) was truly amazing and I cannot wait to see (Dies)! Please let us know when the dates are confirmed so I can make reservations as soon as possible. Looking forward to seeing more.

  114. shinoda_fan on October 13, 2008 at 9:16 pm

you should make a video documentary about the processof making your art.

  115. Frerard on October 13, 2008 at 8:59 pm

it’s gonna be great, i’m sure. your art kills.

  116. alyeska39 on October 13, 2008 at 8:59 pm

Wewt! I love how you know that we can’t resist a sneak-peek into your art! lol! This looks like it is definitely something to look forward to. I’d say I can’t wait, but I actually can, the waiting and learning about it beforehand is part of the art, I’m in no hurry to see it, it’ll be ready when it’s ready.

  117. HardlyChanged on October 13, 2008 at 8:47 pm

ah i’m so excited to see your new works. bring a show to the east coast pleaseee

    DOPE

  119. analoggirl on October 13, 2008 at 8:23 pm

I’ve been looking forward to (Dies) for months, but your description has whet my appetite. I can’t wait to see your new pieces and the conclusion of your story arc. I’d add that I can’t wait to see how he dies, but that sounds morbid. lol I wonder… Do you ever think about your legacy? If so, how would you want to be remembered?

  120. faiintx on October 13, 2008 at 8:23 pm

    i can’t wait til january!
mike, i’ve got to ask you; where do you get all these ideas???

& for a school project (im in 8th grade), we have to pick our favorite artist and research about them, and then paint a painting in a similar style. and i picked YOU =]
so, can you tell me a bit about your technique; how you brainstorm your ideas & how you get started?

you’re awesome mike! ur my IDOL!

  123. Doggie24690 on October 13, 2008 at 8:15 pm

That’s a genius concept. I’ve read a lot about your GLORIOUS EXCESS (BORN) paintings, even have on of the skate decks, but you nor anyone else has described it quite like that. Thank you.

…can’t wait to see some more. The bottom pic is dope. I also didn’t realize that you were still painting. I thought you were done with (DIES) already and just had to display them. That makes it even more fresh and suspenseful.

  124. ThePrincess on October 13, 2008 at 8:08 pm

    oh….an AMAZING… thing..is already coming….i can’t wait to see that….i know u’re the BEST…hon….
