free stuff if you vote

November 4, 2008

yo1

A number of businesses are encouraging people to vote by giving away their products as a reward!

Starbucks is offering a free 12-oz. cup of coffee as a reward for voting (just show them your “I Voted” sticker). Ben and Jerry’s is giving away a scoop of ice cream. Krispy Kreme is giving away red white and blue donuts…mmm…tasty.

A longer list and links can be found here, courtesy of USA Today:
http://blogs.usatoday.com/ondeadline/2008/11/voters-offered.html

One company is even giving away sex toys. See the MSNBC article here:

Yes this was an awesome idea…and I honestly thought Obama would have been a better choice and i am glad he won..And the poster is pretty cool…very encouraging too (:

i think it’s great that these buisnesses are willing to do such things to motivate people to vote

i think it’s damn depressing that these buisnesses have to do such things to motivate people to vote

  3. axrinekey on November 10, 2008 at 12:23 am

    Omg… sex toys… xD

    AHAHAHA xD
Krispy Kreme…. the donuts really that tasty? xD
But I dunno if they have it here:/

Wow… they really do know how to make people vote! xD

  4. erippe on November 8, 2008 at 8:18 pm

The ice also became the topic of conversation in Japan. “Though the young may go to voting if it’s put into effect”I think a good idea!:)

  5. Hawaii_LP_fan on November 6, 2008 at 1:37 pm

Yes I heard about the yummy ice cream, but the kinky toys? That’s different! Businesses got on the band wagon & that’s pretty cool! I went the absentee ballot route & voted for “CHANGE”! I sat glued in front of my tube 3/4 of the day watching the results & political commentaries. President elect Obama eloquently spoke from the heart. As I listened intently to his speech, there is one profound image that will always stick in my mind. He united all ages & ethnicities! Even artist Shepard Fairey has managed to capture the message in his artwork. Blending of the democrats (blue) & republicans (red). Love his work! His latest “Victory”. It has been a history-making, life changing electoral year!

  6. PankakeMunky on November 6, 2008 at 6:37 am

unfortunately, i didn’t have time to get the free ice cream at ben and jerry’s but hearing about other free stuff’s always nice. it gets people to go out and vote and voice their opinions about issues. i just can’t help but laugh at the free sex toys link. i guess every business is willing to get ANYONE to vote, even those who have kinky lives…

  7. Aqua101 on November 5, 2008 at 10:09 pm

    Hello Mike …
I wonder if you voted for Barack Obama …
I think the U.S. vote is also secret, but I wanted to know who was his very choice and what you think about politics and the U.S. government in recent years.
    Thanks…
    Love you!!!

    Hey Mike…

I apologise about the double post (already commented on this blog) and the off-topic-ness, but thought this article, although you are probably aware of the situation, might be of interest to you since you’re friends with one of the Deftone guys: http://www.livedaily.com/news/15175.html

I’d like 2 apologize 2 both u Mike & every1 else 4 that altercation that happened on the other blog. It had not ben my intention 2 coment like that but I do not take kindly 2 being atacked & worse w/false accusations just bcause they don’t like me. I will try 2 make sure it won’t happen again. Again I apologize 2 EVERY1.

Mike asking u 2 post over ther was just a sugestion 4 damage control on fmmb. How r we 2 believe that its going 2 take some1 as web savy as u over a min 2 go over there post a “hi” & leave. However ur “fan” from other blog, even though she was entertaining 2 some, made it worse for u w/others. I can’t say if this can be reversed. Thank u 4 ur time.

Hahahahahaha…. sex toys. Hahahahaha. Coffee was good though. Kinda awkward though because there were no signs at Starbucks or anything. Walking up to the cashier was nerve racking and then when I said, “I voted,” it felt like code words for buying drugs or something. Lol… good times.

I’m so glad! yeah 349 to 189 THATS real change!

  31. Chemist999 on November 5, 2008 at 4:19 am

Oh, and sorry for breaking the one user one post rule, but only now I’ve found the results of Prop 8 vote. I was quite surprised, that such a liberal state would accept this proposal. But it’s still better than the U.S. Constitution amendments, those would be too complicated to reverse.🙂
But the Propositions 7 and 10 are intriguing to say the least. Though I think 10 is a bit radical in it’s goals, 7 is quite reasonable and if the state itself would set an example, maybe the people would follow the way. Higher costs and other effects are can be discouraging, but if we all stick with the “lowest costs – maximum profit” philosophy, we’ll end up having to resolve the problem anyway later.

  32. lucky_cat on November 5, 2008 at 3:09 am

YEA, America!!! Yes, YOU CAN ! Congratulations !!! Greetings from Berlin, Cheers !

  33. Anene on November 5, 2008 at 3:07 am

The companies independent of the candidates decided to to offer free stuff to voters who voted. They didn’t tell you who to vote for. Although i find it hard to believe any one will drove to a polling place and stand in line just to get a cup of coffee or scoop of ice-cream. I had my mind set a while ago. The free stuff just motivated me to go early instead of later because this stores do run out. I personally think people in this country who treat the right to vote as something to be taken lightly should be shot. “exercising your right to vote” means putting the power you have to use. Not voting is like a doctor who has the power to save a guy from bleeding but he chooses not to.

  50. 4n174 on November 4, 2008 at 5:17 pm

aww i wish they did the same thing in Canada….there would have been a higher voter turnout in the last election if they actually did.

  51. tacos_on_tuesday on November 4, 2008 at 4:45 pm

I don’t think the free crap is a bribe to vote. It’s all in good natured fun. Plus it’s all about capitalism & marketing- you go for your free whatever & you end up spending $20 on something else.I highly doubt someone is going to go through the effort to vote just for free shit, but if they do that’s their right. You can be a fuckin dumb ass but that’s the beauty of being an American-we all have the right to vote for whatever reason we choose to vote for even if it’s because a free cup of joe. But I highly doubt someone would go through the effort for that sole reason. It’s a few companies having a good time with what is a pretty historic day. Don’t judge & criticize-JUST ROLL WITH IT!

    No the sex toys haha…

  56. bec on November 4, 2008 at 4:02 pm

  57. Estelwen on November 4, 2008 at 3:43 pm

Are american people so dummy that you need to drag them with dunuts and sex to make them vote?!! I don’t think so!
I think that every american who has the right to vote will go straight to the ballot boxes to make his voice count. I think that most of american people are conscious of that and these ads are so insulting, it’s like “hey donkeys, if you vote we’re gonna give you a big carrot!”

  58. asianotter on November 4, 2008 at 3:21 pm

I voted for my children not for freebies! Free sex toys!?! Hahahaha! Enjoy!

  59. Raspberry on November 4, 2008 at 3:11 pm

No doubt if it was in the UK there would be a multi million pound enquiry into why the politcian who became Prime Minister got their votes and how … leading to a votes for bribes case … thanks goodness i live in England. Nothing more corrupt that bribing people to do what you want. And i don’t vote … i don’t agree with any of the loons who wanna run good ol’ blighty.

  60. motsy on November 4, 2008 at 3:03 pm

its funny to me that some are looking at the free gifts as bribing people to vote. i dont think(or at least hope) there are many people out there that werent going to vote until starbucks said, hey, i’ll give you a free small coffee if you do vote. its all marketing. look at all the free publicity and advertising these companies have received. if they said i would only get the free coffee if i voted for a specific candidate, then i would have a problem with it.

  61. yohannaaaa on November 4, 2008 at 2:51 pm

  63. Sonia_LPrnway_ on November 4, 2008 at 1:48 pm

sorry for the double post. @ Anne: yes, you have to register in order to vote but that doesn’t mean that you must go if you’re registered. i’ve heard on the news that at the previous US elections a lot of people that had registered didn’t vote after all.

  64. Anne on November 4, 2008 at 1:38 pm

I think I might like that here in Germany :o)

What is that with u Americans thinking so patriotistic? So I am German, some of the US citizens still think we are all Nazis. If I would go “hoorraay for my country” what would you think? (no offence to anyone, either american or german)
Just VOTE because you can and not because you need to, are forced to or get a reward for :o)
Just please make GWB be gone soon :o)
@ Sonia -> don’t you need to register prior to the election? So the gifts don’t make you go voting because you were sure you’re going before that note came out. It is just what it is: marketing. Nothing else😉

  65. ninguem on November 4, 2008 at 1:37 pm

    i agree with SoniaLPrnway
    she read my thoughts

  66. Madlen on November 4, 2008 at 1:31 pm

Heh this is weird…we don’t really have that in our country.I remember when this really stupid guy from our city was a candidate for mayor and he was giving away waffles, chickens, pigs, shoes and just unbelievable stuff…And of course he didn’t win.Not to mention that for the bigger elections like for president some people give money to a big group of people and that way buy their votes. And to make sure that they actually do their “job” they give them a ride to the place for voting…i think that was like 2 years ago and it was a really huge thing and they were talking about it on the news.

  67. Sonia_LPrnway_ on November 4, 2008 at 1:28 pm

bribing people to vote? tsk tsk tsk…you know you’ve reached a new level of low when they bribe you with free stuff if you vote . so you don’t care about your country, your future and you just vote for the free stuff? that’s ridiculous! have you seen anywhere else in the world businesses giving away free stuff if you vote? i haven’t. if your motivation to go vote is a free ice cream or some actor/singer/etc telling you that you must vote, than the future of your country or the need for some change, then you’re fucked. and that’s my 2 cents. sorry if i offend anyone

  68. vivalavulva on November 4, 2008 at 1:26 pm

why isn’t there a babeland in san francisco? and it’s nice that here people are being rewarded for voting, when in some places people are fined when they don’t vote.

  69. Lee on November 4, 2008 at 1:22 pm

Wow… it’s getting a little out of hand now. Sure, getting a free coffee after voting is a nice “reward,” but everything else is a bit too much. Voting should be a conscious effort, & something that you’re willing to do for the better of the country. I feel like people are being pressured to vote now through things like the “vote or die” campaign or with the free merch, or whatever. It’s going to cause people to think a little irrational & maybe not put as much thought into their vote as they would have liked, & that might lead to wrong decisions. When we have these things that act like a bribery or a reward, people might vote because of the merch & not because they want a change.

  70. Chemist999 on November 4, 2008 at 1:13 pm

Well, I don’t think it can be considered bribing… they’re just encouraging you to go to vote, which doesn’t help particular candidate. Only if higher turnout gives advantage to certain ideology, and candidate and blah blah. Real bribe would be if they’d offer you those “benefits” for voting or not voting particular party. During our last elections, we were given 15% discount in some stores for not voting for our variant of your Democrats.😀 But you had to bring your ballot to verify you’re not going to vote for them and leave it there.😀

  71. WTF on November 4, 2008 at 12:53 pm

Haha. No wonder there was a line out the door at Starbucks today. I paid $4 for my drink.
I have to agree with ArielCahen. It’s really stupid if people are voting for all the free stuff. As if the candidates weren’t bad enough already without having them voted in because people randomly checked off a box so they could have a fun day in town collecting donuts, icecream, coffee and sex toys. A fat person’s dream day !!

I can’t take this election seriously anyway. Obama and Mccain both suck. The Black Guy vs The White Guy is as much of a joke as Britney Spears in the media. This country will be even more fucked regardless of who wins and will eventually look like the SOTD video. LOL

  72. cuz on November 4, 2008 at 12:39 pm

HA! Now we all know why you care about the election so bad! Funny that it’s MSnbc writing about the sex toys HAHAHA… Strange, isn’t it? xD Anyways, that’s just nice, especially if you like sweets, like me. Hope you picked your freebies up🙂

  73. YourConscience on November 4, 2008 at 12:32 pm

Although I’ve been tempted to strut around with my “I voted” sticker and collect free food all day, I won’t. Because, the fact of the matter is, the bribing is, in this case, highly illegal. However, I got an amazing laugh out of this post because I told hubby about the free sex toys, and he simply said, “It’s probably Republicans who own the store, but they’re afraid Obama’s going to win, so they figured, ‘Hey, if you’re gonna get screwed anyway, at least have some fun doing it!'” Hahaha. Oh, I love my hubby. ^_^

  74. Carla on November 4, 2008 at 12:29 pm

I actually thought at first that it was offered to everybody on Election Day. Then my Dad and classmates later verified that it’s only people who vote, which disqualifies me because I’m not old enough. (Yes, I wanted my scoop of ice cream) I mean, even sex toys?! The reward may be sweet, but the intention behind it is pretty sad. Like, you’re at Starbucks and you have to ask yourself: Are you really there because you made your choice, or you just want the free coffee? It just proves voter apathy. Though, I’m sure there are people who do vote seriously and stand with the candidate they chose. It’s different for everybody.

  75. Kalini on November 4, 2008 at 12:29 pm

Mike, have you already voted! Did you need any additional motivation such as a cup of coffee; ice cream; donuts or maybe sex toys? Probably some people would be attracted by the reward and have a good reason to vote!?! Ha-ha! Democracy never tasted so sweet! Nice post! Krassie K.

see, that’s why you should live in the U.S.! haha! j/k… I live in denmark and Ben&Jerry’s is ridiculously expensive here, but I love that stuff! lol Anyways, I think this is typical american (no offense), but like the others say, I think you should vote if you really know what you want to change and what the candidate stands for, so I don’t hope people make any last minute decitions, just because they want ice cream and starbucks (or sex toys O_o) well, I don’t think people are that stupid… haha… Anyways, I’ve also been following the election the whole day.. To everyone in the U.S.: Happy voting! ;D

thats pretty great.. i want some ice cream now.. :p
oh & okay, what are your thoughts on teachers & expressing their political views??
i really dont think teachers should really be open to talk to their students about their opinions & stuff, & today i was totally ridiculed by a teacher for wearing a certain candidates shirt..? it was insane; i had 10 other people just sitting around me telling me whats wrong about him & my teacher, my own TEACHER as the ring leader of the pack while i sat there just keeping my mouth shut trying not to argue.
    i walked out of class.

I don’t really support bribing people. Americans should vote because they want some sort of change, but I think it’s freaking hilarious they’re giving away sex toys. I just got back from the polls. Perhaps I should contact them for a free toy, lmfao.

Leave it to America to bribe people with food since so many of us need another donut. Go out and vote because you care not because you get to stuff your face afterwards.

It is always the same. I move my ass when I get some free stuff!!!!!!
You have the opportunity to change something …. But hey, who cares …I got a donut for free… distressing :((

I’m not sure if I support this. People should vote conscientiously or not vote at all.
Many people seem to think that voting is just the action of checking a paper next to a name and placing it into a box (or pressing a few buttons if it’s electronic voting), or that it’s pointless, etc. You can make a difference by voting. In this case, you’re helping decide who is going to be in charge of your country. That’s a big deal!
If you’re voting just for the reward, stay home.😛 If you’re voting conscientiously, then go get your reward. It’s for free anyway! haha!
