By Duran Duran

Moving on the floor now babe you’re a bird of paradise

Cherry ice cream smile I suppose it’s very nice

With a step to your left and a flick to the right you catch that mirror way out west

You know you’re something special and you look like you’re the best

Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand

Just like that river twisting through a dusty land

And when she shines she really shows you all she can

Oh Rio, Rio dance across the Rio Grande

I’ve seen you on the beach and I’ve seen you on TV

Two of a billion stars

It means so much to me, Like a birthday or a pretty view

But then I’m sure that you know it’s just for you

Hey now woo look at that did she nearly run you down

At the end of the drive the lawmen arrive

You make me feel alive, alive alive

I’ll take my chance cause luck is on my side or something

I know what you’re thinking I tell you something I know what you’re thinking

Her name is Rio she don’t need to understand

And I might find her if I’m looking like I can

Oh Rio, Rio hear them shout across the land

From mountains in the north down to the Rio Grande

M: “It means so much to me, Like a birthday or a pretty view / But then I’m sure that you know it’s just for you”

This song is full of lyrics that just rhyme for rhyming’s sake.

I like cake.

Wake and bake.

Jake The Snake.

Get DURAN DURAN’S “GREATEST” here. It’s an 80’s must-have…

Mike-you crack me up. Back in the day, I loved this song. Even named my cat after it. My Rio lived to 19 and she danced in the sand a lot. Sadly, I really had no idea what any of the other words were. I do remember the video where Simon Lebon chases after some wild cat-girl. Thanks for sharing insane lyrics with us and reminding us why LP reigns – music that rocks and lyrics with meaning.

  2. Lynnie on November 26, 2008 at 1:08 pm

Doooooooooooooode! Are you SERIOUSLY ragging on the legendary ‘Rio’ by Duran Duran? ~Mock gasp~ I love that song – I’m a dork, I know, but I can’t help but like that song! Come to think of it, I haven’t heard it in a while…~Searches Media Player for it~… there we go! Moving on the floor now babe you’re a bird of paradise/Cherry ice cream smile I suppose it’s very nice…

  3. Tremblar on November 25, 2008 at 6:54 pm

Random place to put this, but what do you think of Kanye’s 808s CD? I liken him to you because of the whole do whatever you want, go against the grain (artistically that is), j/w…

  4. axrinekey on November 21, 2008 at 1:22 am

Seriously, I don’t understand the whole lyrics.

    RIO RIO! o-o

    I understand how you feel.
All for the sake of rhyming…

“I know what you’re thinking I tell you something I know what you’re thinking”
    What the heck? xD

  5. linkingal007 on November 19, 2008 at 10:01 pm

“But I keep rhymin’ and stepwriting the next cypher…” <.< I’ve been hearing this stupid stuff for song long that I didn’t know rhyming actually existed… I can fully understand if you don’t get what I mean ‘cuase I have water in my mouth.

  6. Janine1978 on November 19, 2008 at 1:32 pm

I like the Band Duran Duran, but only song’s from the 80’s. My fav song is “Wild Boy’s” – do you know the song? And this song is very great.

  7. samira on November 18, 2008 at 5:25 am

qu’est ce qui se passera quand Jack The Snake nous morderas? cela va nous plaire?

  8. Shadow on November 18, 2008 at 4:56 am

Duran Duran are/were just great and one of my favorites ever since the 80s! And honestly said I always liked this song…the rhythm to be exact! When I heard the lyrics first I was like “What the hell do you want to tell me?” LOL! In cases like this I concentrate on the music, not the lyrics… πŸ˜‰

  9. sassi_lp on November 17, 2008 at 10:32 am

Where the hell is the Q&A section on the bandmember’s LPN sites? I wanted to see Brad’s latest Q&A (he answered a question of mine about him playing trumpet and you guys might bringing some trumpet into your music) and it’s not there anymore! what happened?

  10. Gabry94LinkinParkfan23 on November 17, 2008 at 7:12 am

hahaha thats funny i like it, Mike!!!!!!!!! byeee x

  11. msgirl on November 16, 2008 at 6:04 pm

haha… πŸ™‚ that’s funny….. :)hmm….U KNOW TOKIO HOTEL’S SONGS??ALSO THE LYRICS DON’T MAKE SENSE.kinda irrelevant….but urs….wow…… πŸ™‚ eventhough i am not good at my english,i try to understand ur songs’ lyrics..and i like this really much ‘when i am killed by the questions like a cancer then i’ll be buried in the answers of an answer’ and also ‘i run, till the silence splits me open…..blabla….the chorus is awesome.. πŸ™‚ thanx for the awesome lyrics.. πŸ™‚

  12. Madlen on November 16, 2008 at 11:46 am

Hahah that reminds me of The Cloud Song:
My name is Cloud/I have a sword/I fight cactus because I’m bored/I like to ride on coco bones/It’s better then having afros…
I think those lyrics might be proper for this section:)

  13. missdunno on November 16, 2008 at 8:22 am

I’ve never heard about this song before, and I’ll never listen to it again… Seriously, this song is horrible and doesn’t mean anything. But at least it’s funny (even if it wasn’t supposed to be when it was written)! And please please Mike, I beg you, don’t ever write a song like that for the new LP album!

  14. Jaclyn on November 16, 2008 at 8:16 am

Cool! funny i also noticed that phrase ;))

    GLXS moment

    from here

  15. antje on November 16, 2008 at 7:29 am

Oh yeah, very meaningful lyrics… πŸ™‚
This is my fav line: “Oh Rio, Rio dance across the Rio Grande”
It’s a “special” name for a “special” girl in a “special” song I guess… very special

  16. yanTyan on November 16, 2008 at 6:53 am

  17. po2ja on November 16, 2008 at 6:47 am

never heard the song before but funny lyrics….. “i like cake, wake and bake, Jake the snake”… nice πŸ™‚

  18. Brittney on November 16, 2008 at 6:11 am

“I like cake. Jake The Snake.”

lol, kind of reminds me of that Scooter song you posted a while back.

  19. Harboe on November 16, 2008 at 6:09 am

Haha, that was a good one.
Do you know “on the verge of something wonderfull” by darren hayes ?
It makes no sense at all!
    “A samurai, an angel
    An eloquent table
An AC that does not work
A road trip, a car wreck
    A paperback novel
A lover who ain’t been hurt”

    Read this one! Haha.
    Great song though πŸ™‚

By the way, love ya mike πŸ™‚

  20. NoFace on November 16, 2008 at 5:22 am

What about a rhyming contest? Mike bike tyke drive high fine dive slide guy cry night shy. A guy named Mike the Spike take a nice slide down the street on his bike then do a deep dive eh… whatever.
Maybe this video is for you: Seasame Street fat cat sat hat lulz

Anyway, do you have any comment on Brad’s new haircut and Lupe Fiasco’s decision to retire?

  21. cuz on November 16, 2008 at 5:14 am

The “Hey now woo look at that did she nearly run you down” verse made me like WFT?! But yeah, Duran Duran… I have a lot of sentiment for that times…

  22. rockermeg on November 16, 2008 at 4:57 am

    J’aime la gateau!!!
…what? Everybody was saying it I thought I’d put a little twist on it ;p
Rio is just one of those albums you have to have…I think its in the 1001 albums you have to hear before you die…Now that’s an awesome book! Hybrid Theory’s in there as well.
I think rhymes for rhymes sake are really cheesy but I think this song pulls it off well…
Good luck in the Fuse contest!!

  23. miKer0cks on November 16, 2008 at 4:33 am

Hmmm well, I like Duran-Duran but I never really noticed the lyrics of this song…. HAHAHAHA!!! ”I like cake, wake and bake” LOL!!! That’s so f*cking funny!!!! πŸ˜€ I love the lyrics in print posts you make, they are really really cool and funny!!! You and your great ideas πŸ˜›

    PS. I can’t stop laughing now πŸ˜›

  24. Joanie_LP on November 16, 2008 at 2:31 am

    that’s why I love you Mike πŸ™‚

  25. liope on November 16, 2008 at 2:00 am

this is the point where you say:” what does the poet tries to say??” Haha!!

hey Mike, this is a blog of a band called The Dead Letters, that looks that they have problems with the record labels…anyway they posted something about Message Boards and they mentioned you, actually they said that you are a great example!! check it out πŸ˜‰

  26. Kalini on November 16, 2008 at 1:43 am

Duran Duran – one of the most successful bands ever! Yes, they are good in rhymes! Rio isn’t their best song. I prefer Save a Prayer, The Reflex, Notorious, Ordinary World…. Their song Come Undone can be related to your previous post regarding the LGBT Rights: β€œWho do you need? Who do you love? When you come undone”. Krassie K.

  27. Shinodabestfriend on November 16, 2008 at 12:49 am

is it strange name rio for a girl??

  30. Aqua101 on November 15, 2008 at 11:13 pm coincidence! I like Cake, too! Wake & bake…with Jake the Snake. Yup…Duran2 was one of my fav 80’s bands. I like ‘View To Kill’ (the james bond’s song they created long ago). BTW, hv u seen the new James Bond movie Quantum of Solace? Its awesome. I like most 007 movies. Mike, plz update yr coming new album. I can’t wait to owe it one. I hope many interesting lyrics there. I’m sure LP will always make amazing music. I hv no doubt abt you guys. Each of you trully has a unique talent. Also, how is Chester? And for you…take care & take it easy, darling πŸ˜‰

  31. Girl_X on November 15, 2008 at 9:00 pm

    Wake and bake.

    Wake and buy a cake!

    (I know nothing about household!)

P.S.: At least the Duran Duran Guys were shaved, or?!?

  32. MissNatalie1984 on November 15, 2008 at 8:55 pm

dude, duran duran were freaking awesome! it doesn’t even matter that their lyrics aren’t … er… that great, they helped to define the new wave/new romantic era in the 80’s.

i’m a little more worried about your rhyming lyrics… “wake and bake”. that is one reference i never thought i’d hear come out of your virtual mouth lol.

    cheers for the post, Mike!

  33. PankakeMunky on November 15, 2008 at 8:43 pm

i agree with you, mike, about the awesome train of thought when it came to the rhymes. i love the beginning two lines of the song: “Moving on the floor now babe you’re a bird of paradise/Cherry ice cream smile I suppose it’s very nice.” it’s like there’s major A.D.D. right there or something just like you said. another song that reminds me of awesome A.D.D.-ness is”missing cleveland” from scott weiland: “You were trashed out at the bar /They expected us to fall from the heavens, /It’s only seven /They were monkeys all of them /Entertainment summer stain/Wondering where the /It’s now or never.”

  34. motsy on November 15, 2008 at 8:31 pm

wasnt this the video where simon lebon fell off a boat and almost drowned? maybe that was a sign about the song. actually, i loved duran duran; but i think we all liked them for their looks and definitely not their profound lyrics!

  35. bec on November 15, 2008 at 7:25 pm

But Mike this song is the ultimate cheese song to play at weddings or works christmas partys and get everyone up on the dancefoor dancing like a spaz…can I use that word? wikipedias it…I apologise to any it offends.

Anyways – it doesn’t matter how old you are or what sort of music you like, everyone knows at least the chorus of this song, the crazy rhyming just helps you sing along.
Personally I prefer Duran Duran’s ‘Wild Boys’, which interestingly enough made #5 in the NKOTB’s favourite 50 pop songs with attitude…they beat The Spice Girls and how could they not as ‘Wild boys always shine’

  36. ArielCahen on November 15, 2008 at 7:10 pm

    Duran Duran! They’re great!
“Save a prayer” and “Ordinary world” are songs everyone should listen to at least once. Also, “A view to a kill” is one of James Bond’s best theme song ever…

Part of this one makes no sense though. True! Check this out:”Hey now woo look at that did she nearly run you down / At the end of the drive the lawmen arrive / You make me feel alive, alive alive” – Yeah, right… ahahah!

Off topic: I’m not sure, but I think this song is about “Rio de Janeiro” (brazilian city/state).

  37. TEQUILA on November 15, 2008 at 7:04 pm

that made me laugh xD and u’re good at writing such lyrics XD kiddin’)

  38. mike_n_LP_4ever on November 15, 2008 at 6:39 pm

LoL! Reminds me of Intergalactic by Beastie Boys! “I like my sugar with coffee and cream!” HaHa Love them! Oo and BTW: wierd song. c[=

I would never ever like to have an 80s fashion revival! The hairstyle is terrible ! LOL … and the pink shirt with shoulder pads, aahhhh… “Why is the rum gone?!”

  40. MS_Ineedyou on November 15, 2008 at 5:54 pm

Who hasn’t heard this song before ? xDD It doesn’t make sense at ALL …. it’s kind of annoying … my dad listens to it EVERY FUCKING DAY -.-‘ So you know i’m serious when i say I HATE THIS SONG !! πŸ™‚ But, yes, Mike you’re right. It doesn’t make any sense πŸ™‚ And by me saying i hate the song does not mean i hate the post πŸ™‚

  41. alyeska39 on November 15, 2008 at 5:08 pm

No no no, not “Wake and Bake”, it’s gotta be “Shake and Bake”!

Also, I liked “I’ll take my chance cause luck is on my side or something”… or something??? lol!

  42. murry on November 15, 2008 at 5:03 pm

Sometimes the catchiest songs are the ones that are barely discernible. And even when you can make out the words, they don’t make sense. For example, anything by Beck or STP.

But, “wake and bake?” That does sound good.

  43. lp_fm_fan on November 15, 2008 at 4:52 pm

random: i wasn’t really into the iPhone i thought it was a bit overrated but then like after the iPhone 3G came out about 1 month later i was hooked. i saw the videos on and the tv ad commercials. omg, I want one, NOW. rumor has it that there’ll be a 32GB iPhone before Christmas, doubt it since Christmas draws near but i really want an iPhone, NOW, haha. I keep bugging my mom about switching to AT&T just to get the iPhone. I’m in love with it. Some questions: I know you commented that AT&T had the most drop calls or something? any more complaints? and I’m planning to study abroad in England and is the international calling/traveling package good? (i’m assuming you have one)

  44. Lori on November 15, 2008 at 4:34 pm

dude i quite like duran duran, haha they are in my ipod under the genre “cheesetastic popcrap”

  45. AliceXD on November 15, 2008 at 4:23 pm

wow… just.. wow… i didnt get the lyrics…. and lol wake and bake…. i cant stop saying that now >.< …

  46. Noda89 on November 15, 2008 at 4:16 pm

Lmao @ Jake the Snake. Mabye Duran Duran just had one of those day’s and was like, “I feel like rhyming today.” Or, they could’ve been eating a burrito and thought of Rio…something to that effect.

  47. Daga280 on November 15, 2008 at 3:39 pm

hahaha but maybe this song’s melody is nice. U know-for ppl who dont speak english some songs r great even if they dont have brilliant lyrics.

hey maybe you schould write a similar one??? just for fun xDDD

  48. asaulp on November 15, 2008 at 3:38 pm

Haha.. “I like cake / Wake and bake” – nice! Anyhow, these Southern California fires are making me antsy! Apparently, they’ve hit parts of LA and are in Anaheim Hills right now, so I pray that all of LP (especially you and Chester) are safe and stay safe : You never know what may happen. Will Music For Relief be doing more to help out victims of the fires? Keep us informed with any Glorious Excess (Dies), other art shows, LP album, Chester’s health updates, please (: I can’t wait for the RtR DVD/CD to come out!

  49. Sharp_Swimmer on November 15, 2008 at 3:08 pm

This segment is really beginning to grow on me – brightens up days immensely!
Lyrics by Stone Temple Pilots are maybe something to look into as well… They’re a bit strange too, to say the least! Maybe you could have Chester explain them to the masses, knowing he loves STP and might have figured the lyrics out.

Btw, do you know which anniversary to celebrate today?
It was exactly five years ago today, that ‘Breaking the Habit’ was played live for the first time!
Call me crazy for keeping track of that, but I do think of it as a pretty special thing…

  50. Raspberry on November 15, 2008 at 3:07 pm

Don’t diss Duran Duran … they were excellent for the 80’s tbh! A lot of songs didn’t make sense then but who cares? the concepts for their videos were second to none and were the fore front for many of the bands we have today. Plus they were very handsome!

  51. LPAngel on November 15, 2008 at 3:01 pm

I already knew this lyrics cause i have this song on my singstar game πŸ˜› lol, thatΒ΄s very funny =)=)

  52. sterilepoon on November 15, 2008 at 2:56 pm

You only wish you could write lyrics less intelligent than that.

  54. zimminator on November 15, 2008 at 2:47 pm

wow this is the best song ive ever heard in the world! dude, mike, you should totally learn from this guy. he has the best amazing lyrics ever!…….says in the most sarcastic voice

  55. ShadowerLiltani on November 15, 2008 at 2:37 pm

“Moving on the floor now babe you’re a bird of paradise” This line makes no sense. At least with songs like, Ride on Shooting Star (end theme to FLCL), it’s capable of being understood at some point. I like weird, complicated lyrics, but this song is just ridiculous. I think this was Princess Diana’s favorite band, too.

  56. NoMoreSorrowGirl on November 15, 2008 at 2:20 pm

Ok! I read it…you will going to sing it in the next projekt rev…hahaha!..,that would be awesome…but i have my own lyrics in print too:)…Hope you will not get angry if some idiot post it here:))peace:)
PS: I have only 700 character so its ur turn to finish this one πŸ™‚
Lyrics in Print by: White Pegacorn
    Living in the white house
    Heartland of America
We had some beers and we shared some laughs
You swore me in slowly into your pentagon
And I show you the meaning of β€œchief of staff”
My three colors are red, white and blue
    And there’s only onething
    I wanna do to you
    I wanna Barack your world

  57. Mickey on November 15, 2008 at 2:18 pm

What the moo?! That’s just…wrong, man. And why is the character limit down to 140 again?

  58. Lee on November 15, 2008 at 2:17 pm

Mike, you should read some of Scott Weiland’s lyrics. I don’t know if they’re just… making no sense because of the drugs that he’s done at the time he wrote them or something, but they’re nuts. As much as I love the man, I can’t help but laugh at them. He has a new song out called “Missing Cleveland” and part of the chorus is like, “Strapped into the monkey scene like a martian chimpanzee / Love you more than ever when you broke my laws.”

    Makes no sense. XD

  59. soyuneik on November 15, 2008 at 2:10 pm

Lol, you gotta love Duran Duran.
I’m currently being harassed by tornadoes, rain, wind, thunderstorms and hail.
You need some sort of video link and/or other miscellaneous sharing drop box for your blog. (What would you call that?) I died three times after seeing a video on this new plugin called Celemony Melodyne Dna. If you haven’t seen or heard anything about it, I’d highly suggest watching this video. (All musicians)

I figured if I posted it in the forum it just get lost.

  60. Parker on November 15, 2008 at 2:10 pm

can’t stop laughing lol very, very inteligent lyrics still can’t stop laughing as EpilepticChickenScratch said – freaking amazing xD

  61. durg on November 15, 2008 at 2:07 pm

everytime i see something about duran duran i think it says my last name >.< it drives me insane, haha.
anyway, yea rhyming for rhymings sake is pretty annoying but hey, without songs like that, music would be too serious right? eh nevermind, haha.

  62. EpilepticChickenScratch on November 15, 2008 at 1:59 pm

What the heck?? That is the stupidest song ever. Freaking amazing, though, lol. Your rhyme was the best though. That’s going to be on your new album, right?

  63. ManBearPig on November 15, 2008 at 1:54 pm

Oh Duran Duran. The only thing more out there than the song is the video: .

Seriously, it’s just cracked out to the max. It pretty much encapsulates the 80s, and a coke-fuelled binge in the Caribbean after commandeering a yacht.
