Road To Revolution: Artist Direct Review

November 26, 2008

Recorded during the band’s June 29th appearance at Milton Keynes, Road to Revolution shows Linkin Park at their most fierce, fiery and furious. Kicking off the set with their first bona fide hit, “One Step Closer,” vocalists Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda instantly ignite the mosh pit. The song brandishes a much heavier edge live, and Bennington’s voice swings like a guillotine from pristine to punishing. Linkin Park don’t waste any time, and each song flows into the next, with “From the Inside” instantly tailing “One Step Closer.” The heavier fare like “Given Up” and “No More Sorrow” crushes and soars as necessary. Electronic flourishes coat the jagged guitars live, and Linkin Park achieve arena rock perfection on “Lying from You.”

The interplay between Shinoda and Bennington channels the classic dual harmonies of Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell. However, both vocalists also possess a hip hop swagga, canvassing the stage like wolves on the hunt. That swag serves them well, when Jay-Z shows up for genre-bending live renditions of “Numb/Encore” and “Jigga What/Faint” from their boundary-breaking collaboration Collision Course album. With mash-ups via indie heroes like Girl Talk all the rage right now, it proves that Linkin Park and Jay-Z were (and still are) way ahead of their time.

The slower songs, “The Little Things Give You Away” and “Leave Out All The Rest,” felt like a resurrection of U2’s earlier melancholic pop stylings. However, the real standout is “Breaking the Habit.” Chester’s voice sounds stripped bare, but he pours a lot of heart into the track. Taking center stage over a dreamy piano melody, he guides the song to heights of rock ecstasy.

Road to Revolution is a live record packs the punch of a Linkin Park show, without the stench and sweat. On an eight-minute jam for “Bleed It Out” all hell breaks loose, and the song illuminates everything great about Linkin Park. Cranked up, these songs kill. Linkin Park deserve to continue their reign on the road and the charts.

Great review for Road To Revolution…hope you’re all enjoying it. And if you look carefully, maybe you’ll find something extra on there…

Hey Mike! I’ve got the CD/DVD, and it’s awesome.. LP, the best! โค
I hope you'll be back at Portugal as soon as possible. We love you all ! ๐Ÿ˜€

  2. LenneAB on November 30, 2008 at 2:35 pm

The part about the interplay between Chester and you made me chuckle!
Seriously, Jerry Cantrell and Layne Staley?
Someone should give the writer a little spanking…
Oh yeah, found the extra. A shame, it’s not on the audio cd as well. Yes, shame on you! O_o

  3. tpbarbosa on November 30, 2008 at 12:13 pm

I’d say : “Awesome review”. They’ve said everything I wanted to say after watching it
The atmosphere of the dvd is just unbelivable, I’ve felt like I was there, feeling the same energy
    of the crowd.
My eyes were almost glued to my tv screen, I screamed, jumped and sang all the songs ๐Ÿ˜€
You’ve done an amazing job, I have nothing to complain about.
And til now I’ve only read great comments about the dvd.

Nothing more to add than just a big : THANKS

  6. NuDrive on November 29, 2008 at 6:29 am

I finally got some time to watch it last night, and it’s AMAZING!!! I’m so glad I got to go, and that you guys recorded it, because in the crowd you can’t see everything and it’s looks just so amazing seeing it from different angles and POV’s [: I like the balance between rocking out and the slower songs; I have to say songs like The Little Things are more moving live. Also thanks for slipping bits of Petrified and There They Go in there [: And I love having Jay-Z there. FEPIC CONCERT [:

hi, my name is Bruno 18 years and I’m from Mexico, I am a fan of Linkin Park from the 11 years, every time I see videos of his concerts I like to be there to be able to feel the emotion of seeing them and listen, so the question is the 64 thousand dollars when they come to Mexico.
Can be sure that they receive here with open arms, in addition to that already requires that we come with the presentation of his new album; the Mexican public the strange, and you want to sing with their successes
for any doubt regarding them leave my mail to communicate with me
    Take care and thanks

  22. Snails on November 27, 2008 at 6:58 am

“And if you look carefully, maybe you’ll find something extra on there…” Does that mean POA, papercut and SIB? or more? ahhh ill have to go searching.. O and its an amazing dvd! Proves how incredible you are live, even my mum was impressed and shes hard to impress haha.

  23. skindesbous on November 27, 2008 at 6:15 am

I think that the “something extra” in the DVD is one of the best parts.. I can’t understand why there’s no one of that “things” between LOATR and Numb, for example ._. Tell Rob he did a really great drums solo ๐Ÿ˜€ BTW, if a butterfly had stopped on my hand while playing Pushing Me Away (or Breaking the Habit, I can’t remember), be sure that everybody on the audience would have known it, haha

  24. Aditya_the_warrior_within on November 27, 2008 at 5:44 am

  25. Helene on November 27, 2008 at 5:13 am

i can’t wait to buy RTR! i’ve seen some clips and it looks cool. and that butterfly moment was awesome, lol. off topic: why some guys keep asking about mike’s personal life? fans are for supporting the music, not asking questions about band mates personal lifes. aren’t they? i think that mike’s personal life is for him and his family, not for the fans ๐Ÿ˜‰ (i’m not very good in english, lol)

  26. zahra on November 27, 2008 at 3:22 am

omg i’m so waiting to buy it!!!! but i need to wait tell some one brings it to me from amarica….I CANT WAIT TO SEE THO!! every one s talking about it!!!…..its one of the best !!!!! ……..GREAT JOB GUYS KEEP IT UP !! WISH U LUCK!!!,,,,,,…

Off topic: and yeah..abt this baby drama, tsk..tsk..tsk (shake head), come on peopleโ€ฆcould we just starting to give suggestion for their baby names (just like what we did with RTR)? 33. numbrocker02 on November 26, 2008 at 10:22 pm

    Road to Revolution = EPICNESS!!!!!
This DVD is AMAZING!!!! I loved how Shadow of the Day was filmed(the sunset in the backgroud was great), and Breaking the Habit blew me away. The DVD really captured the energy of the show. I LOVED IT!!!
The butterfly moment was cool. I would have tried to shake it off, but you just kept on playing. Awesome.

  34. kimCHEE on November 26, 2008 at 10:12 pm

OH MYYYYY!!! ROAD TO REVOLUTION IS FUCKING AWEEEESOMEEEE! ๐Ÿ˜€ i think Points Of Authority is really awesome. PUSHING ME AWAYS is like DA BOMB, man!!!!!!!!!!! hmmm, but Singapore put the disc as NC16 , but HECK IT , i bought it anyway even though im 14. mwahahahahahaha. anyway, it was reallllllllyyyyyy nice. good job on it , ya’ll. have a joyous thanksgiving, you guys really deserve it, like , ALOT. ๐Ÿ˜€

oh and your hand had that tiny cut while you were playing the piano. were you scratched :/ ? lol fans can get enough of LP, yo!

  35. beamer87 on November 26, 2008 at 9:40 pm

That was awesome, even after seeing LP perform 3 times in one year, a live performance always ceases to amaze me. Unlike many other people who posted under this topic, I enjoyed seeing the bonus material and thought overall that the big hype about Road to Revolution being released was well worth it. Eagerly awaiting the new material.

Because it is getting really annoying to have to sign in every single day!!!!!!!!

  43. Zach on November 26, 2008 at 6:52 pm

Are there special stuff besides Somewhere I Belong, Papercut and Points Of Authority at the end? I sure hope so! Any hints?!?

  44. asaulp on November 26, 2008 at 6:10 pm

Similar to MS_INEEDYOU, I know this is VERY off-topic and way too personal to be asked, but I too saw that link to the Babies R’ Us registry, so as well, I would like to know.. with your discretion, of course. >.< I feel guilty asking this and I probably SHOULD feel guilty, but I think we all would like you to clear up any misleading information to this rumor and/or the truth, please! I’ve watched RtR five times already, and I’m still blown away by your performance – particularly on “Points of Authority”.. I love that song (: I hope you guys have a satisfactory Thanksgiving! ๐Ÿ˜€
Your LOATR Remix sounds fucking awesome! I love it. It makes me want to dance ๐Ÿ™‚

Ayy mike…. did u remember when a butterfly or a bug or something flew to your fingers when u were playing keyboards for the Pushing me Away song? hahaha…. it was funny…. when u were concentrating.. all of a sudden it disturbed your fingers… hahahaha Road to revolution is crazy! I love it! Linkin Park is the most successful band ever!

  48. Rolf_M on November 26, 2008 at 4:39 pm

That’s a nice review, and it’s trully well deserved. The setlist of RTR is just awesome, and the dvd really catches the live atmosphere. I hope you guys will hit the road again next year and come to Denmark again, it’s always a big experience to see you live. I don’t know any other bands who brings so much energy to the stage as you guys, and that energy always affect the audience no matter if it’s a dvd or a concert in real life. So yeah, well deserved review, congratz ๐Ÿ™‚

  49. TaylorKenjiLP on November 26, 2008 at 4:33 pm

something extra? hmm, maybe perhaps “thanks for watching. you have unlocked new content!” ahaha. i love that fort minor stuff you mixed in with POA. and mike, how did you contine playing when that butterfly flew under your hand in pushing me away (i think that was the song?) i wouldnt have been able to remain composed =P

  50. Vican on November 26, 2008 at 2:58 pm

Actually, I think it’s 3/4 cancelled shows in Sweden – I think there was a small show back in 2001 that was cancelled. Sweden must hold the record of most-cancellations from you guys, which is pretty sad. Be sure to make it up to us after the new album has been released ๐Ÿ˜‰
And I loved Road To Revolution – it gave me great comfort as I lay shivering, wheezing and coughing on the couch, because my friends and I relived our childhood days playing in the snow the day before. “Bleed It Out” gave me goosebumps; it was amazing! It was also nice to get to see you live, and not just the back of some guys head, which is unfortunately all to often the case at concerts. Anyway, great DVD, loved it!

  51. faiintx on November 26, 2008 at 2:35 pm

    road to revolution was AWESOME!!
you guys should release live shows more often =D

    happy thanksgiving, mike!
    ur my IDOL!

  52. EllePi on November 26, 2008 at 2:31 pm

Hello! Awesome dvd ! Even i have watched many LP shows, i was amazed by road to revolution, really incredible … I just want to tell .. there is a little mistake on the french edition, i don’t know for the other, but on mine, there was on the shrink-wrap (hope it’s the good word sorry) ” … projekt revolution en juin 2009″… anyway, it’s not important, just funny. So the show is fantastic and good idea for the extra, it was a nice surprise ! Thant you very much ! Best wishes from Paris. Caroline

  53. I_B_Long on November 26, 2008 at 2:29 pm

this review might not be as well worded, but it says it all: looks like ya got a new fan ๐Ÿ™‚

  54. ShadowerLiltani on November 26, 2008 at 2:04 pm

I know you like reviews, but I am getting so tired of them. Personally, I think the Hartford show’s opening topped Milton Keynes opening, but don’t get me wrong Mike, cause the MK opening is still really cool. Took me back to Rock am Ring ’04, that instrumental was beautiful. Anyways, the author can write, really really well, so, I give ’em that. Yeah, I’ve been hearing hints from fans about those extras. They all keep posting threads about extras but are resisting telling them, which I like because I don’t want spoilers. RTR is on my Christmas list.

  55. Zephran on November 26, 2008 at 1:56 pm

    The “something extra” was awesome!

Love your Fort Minor additions! gahh come to sweden again soon.. You’ve cancelled 2/3 shows here =/

Don’t you want to relieve the bra moment?

Haha.. anyways, great work on the dvd! Hope to see you soon!

  56. Hybr1d_7h3ory on November 26, 2008 at 1:46 pm

That is a very flattering review and I totally agree. This CD/DVD is nothing short of amazing. The set list is killer the performance is even more kick-ass. From the KC show I really like “Hands Held High” done over the intro to “Crawling” but hearing that a cappella gives me goose-bumps every time I hear it. This is yet another great piece to add to my LP and MS addiction.

What else is hidden on the DVD, I got to the three after the credits. Are there more?

    Have a Happy Thanksgiving Mike…Hybr1d_7h3ory

  57. Anne on November 26, 2008 at 1:43 pm

    Nice DVD, fantastic quality.
BUT I have to agree with “graveguard”. The bonus must be a joke.
Do we want to much? Maybe, but cutting songs out of the flow to put them at the end as an “extra” is just a joke. I feel sort of spoofed.
Look, you don’t have to put up a bonus. Just don’t be kidding, kay? ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanx

  58. Harboe on November 26, 2008 at 1:35 pm

Congrats, mike ! You totally deserve this review. Allthough I haven’t bought the dvd yet, I saw a preview on MTV, and it left me wanting more. Plus, I’ve been to your two shows in Denmark on this tour, (one in may in CPH last year and one in June this year), and you threw an amasing performance on each one of them. I really hope you come by Denmark next time you go touring! (I would loooove to see you playing on the Orange stage at the Roskilde Festival, you might consider that!) ๐Ÿ˜€
I am going to buy the dvd on friday when I get money, and I can’t wait. Thank you for bringing amazing music into my life !

  59. nikkiann0100 on November 26, 2008 at 1:28 pm

Road to Revolution is amazing. It really gives you the feeling of what Projekt Rev was like . You guys did a great job on that and the strobing effects were pretty cool too. Also it was nice at the end to get unlocked songs. Cant wait till the next tour.

  60. LinkinNessa on November 26, 2008 at 1:04 pm

that’s an awesome CD/DVD. i love POA with there they go in the end :D:D but one thing i noticed is that phoenix’ bass is broken…?! what happened? xD and another thing i wanna show you… i found this link, it says anna is pregnant…is it true? that would be cool ๐Ÿ™‚ here’s the link: there it says it will be a boy, can we look forward to a little mikey? ๐Ÿ˜‰

  61. ninguem on November 26, 2008 at 1:04 pm

i will only get mine in next week, didn’t arrive yet here
but nice thing, and mike did you about the rain in santa catarina, brazil, this is destroying some cities there, more than 78k are homeless and a lot people died because this rain, and this isn’t common here, landslides, flooding everything, all the basic things like food, gas are pretty expensive, homes been evacuated, and the people lost everything, even relatives, friends, is a sad situation, and this rain could last until march, so is a horrible situation
did you think send some help with music for relief, i always remember mfr when i see about this rain, so if you want know, go in google search and see

  68. graveguard on November 26, 2008 at 12:00 pm

It’s sad that you still talking about these extra on the dvd…
Noone finds something else then the 3 “bonus songs” after the credits.
If you would had put some songs like Reading My Eyes or a proshot of QWERTY on it then we could talk about extras…
But cutting 3 songs out of the concert and put them at the end? This isn’t real bonus material for me.
I still hope that someday we’ll find real extras on this dvd… But I don’t think that you would hide them on a way like this, so nobody can’t find them ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

I bought it monday, it’s really awesome! Really good job, guys! And I also watched the “something extra”, but actually I saw how to watch it on LPMB before I searched. Shame on me.

Just got through the DVD about ten minutes ago. Amazing…. I could’nt even begin to tell you my favorite moment(s). I will say that your a cappella version of Hands Held High, was very powerful to watch and listen to. Keep it up!

However, both vocalists also possess a hip hop swagga – For some reason that line made me laugh… don’t ask why.
Awesome review – betcha chuffed with that, huh? I can’t wait to get it… I just can’t believe I have to wait a month to find out IF I get it for Christmas… if not – HMV’s January Sale, HERE I COME!
~I really should get back to my assignments, now! Can you imagine, in 2011, telling my mum ‘I know I flunked uni, but at least I’m up-to-date with all the latest Linkin Park news’~ Lol.

“Linkin Park deserve to continue their reign on the road and the charts”. Rick Florino is so right! I don’t need to try to say it better now. I went yesterday to the biggest store in Sofia, but RTR hasn’t arrived, yet. I’ll check again on Saturday. Very detailed review…. I liked it! Krassie

  81. rockermeg on November 26, 2008 at 9:52 am

I was there!!!! And I’m getting the DVD on Friday when we have a day off school =D
That is exactly how I felt about the show and even though it was my first LP show, I went to see Metallica in Wembly the year before and you guys just matched their talent and enthusiasm; if not over took it!
    The show was amaaazing!!!
Will you give us a hint like with Frat Party At The Pankake Festival????
If not I’ll spend all day trying to find it xD

  82. Shinizzle3 on November 26, 2008 at 9:44 am

  83. MusicalMorphine on November 26, 2008 at 9:30 am

Nice review. Re: to rob’s comment I’d like to know that too. And why the three songs were taken from the setlist and put as extra features. It’s weird watching the whole show then having those at the end.

The DVD is pretty damn awesome though. Even better knowing I was there.

  84. Mickey on November 26, 2008 at 9:29 am

Yeah, I’m definitely getting it, tomorrow and I can’t bloody wait. I should’ve gotten it on monday, but my car decided to die on me, so tomorrow I’m taking the bus to the recordstore and buying RtR with all the money, I don’t have.
God, I hope the extra stuff isn’t as well hidden as it was on Frat Party, man. But yeah, congratulations on the DVD and the wonderful reviews, I can’t wait to see it.

  85. Rob_Wilson on November 26, 2008 at 9:26 am

Dude, the DVD kills – especially as I was there, and I’ve spotted myself in the booklet ๐Ÿ˜€ but my main point is apart from the three missing songs, is there anything else hidden? I know this question is bugging everyone, you don’t have to say what it is if you’d like us to figure it out – I’d relish the challenege, but a simple yes or no as to whether anything else apart from those three is on there would be great ๐Ÿ™‚
    Again congrats on the DVD!!

  86. Wello on November 26, 2008 at 9:18 am
