New Q-Tip album

December 5, 2008

I was in high school when Midnight Marauders came out. I think I had that album (cassette) in rotation for about 6-9 months that year. I had just gotten my driver’s license, and I immediately put a bass tube in my trunk (it was all I could afford at the time). I had worked a bunch of odd jobs (packing boxes in a produce warehouse, selling art designs, etc.) to make money for a car. My parents helped me out with it a bit, and I got this little hatchback Honda. By having my own car, I finally had free reign over the music that played in my car. You don’t like my music? Get out and walk, biiaaatch!

Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest released a new album recently. Although I don’t love every song, there are a few standout gems that take me straight back to ’93. This is one of them.

You can get the album here.

Wow, I really liked that song. I’m actually into a lot of hip-hop right now. I’ve always liked those authentic rappers with poetic, story-like lyrics and a great flow. And Q-Tip is definitely one of those.

By the way, I’d love to know if you’ve ever heard of the band Dälek? They mix hip-hop with a lot of different influences, e.g. atmospheric ambient soundscapes, electronic and industrial elements, etc. You get the picture! Since you have always been a pioneer when it comes to blending different styles together, I’d love to hear your opinion on that band. I must say I really love them right now🙂 You can check them out here: http://www.myspace.com/dalek !

Ohh, Mike, you’re getting older, I was 2 in 93! I haven’t got my driver’s license yet, but now I can listen to music with my ipod… Freedom is here: I love technology LOL

  7. lpstaind1226 on December 6, 2008 at 7:18 pm

aww mike!! that’s such a cute story lol…thankfully with ipod adapters you can just stop the driver’s music and switch it with your own ipod lol…what would you suggest for a good driving playlist?

  8. mike_n_LP_4ever on December 6, 2008 at 1:06 pm

OMG!!!!!! I was watching their hitlist on MTV Hits last night! LoL My head was filled with a bunch of ‘Old Skool’ 80’s music LoL. My brother listens to Q-Tip A LOT! I was wondering why this song sounded so familiar! =) He’s always playing old songs like, “Vibrant Thing” and “Breathe & Stop” I like those two songs from him, but I really like “Gettin Up” nice song. Peace!

Heh,I’d get a ride any day! Your music taste is awesome!!
Hmm,,I think his voice is a bit annoying and the whistling part should have been done on a [clean]electric guitar…
Video’s cool though, and it’s a good song apart from those two points

    Mike da boi racer, huh?
To self: Why does that image not sit right, with me?

    Lol.
You do realise that not many people will know what a ‘cassette’ is… they’re all too young!

  12. DFX on December 6, 2008 at 7:32 am

i don’t feel this track, but i love the low end theory that’s another classic from ATCQ, beats sound there pretty like oldschool cypress hill and house of pain

  13. MayLP on December 6, 2008 at 6:33 am

Haha….All I was used to hear in 93 is Barney [I love you, you love me…blá blá] and Xuxa!
I want a caaaar…[and a driver’s license too] It’s hard to take a bus or taxi to go to wherever you wanna go…everything would be easier if we could teletransportate….hahaha…
MY QUESTION: When you’re coming to BRAZIL? [Sorry, I have to ask you this every comment, maybe you read!]
    I’m waiting since 2004…

    Take care…🙂

hey, Mike! I should say hello first. So hi Mike. It seems like Hardcore (I’m saying on behalf of hardcore, where I belong, haha, funny, yeah, I’m saying it all). had missed it all. I’m sorry for that. Now let’s comment on your story: I’ve never read such a sincere story like this one, and plus it makes me think about my own life, about getting a job when I graduate, get my diploma, so forth. I really like your music, I appreciate it. It’s a masterpiece, though I guess that sentence below was a joke?))I hope so.

  17. LPfeather on December 6, 2008 at 1:52 am

Woow you know that i first time listened to LP on a cassette? some Hybrid Theory EP and Hybrid Theory songs (it was my mother’s cassette! :O). And i was like OH SHIT, haha.

And i didn’t have the occasion to listen more ATCQ but i very like Q-Tip!
The singer/rapper reminds me K-OS’ voice.

  18. LPmAgaS on December 6, 2008 at 1:30 am

I liked thet song , but I don’t like as much as Linkin Park!!!!!
Did you really got your driving license in 1993?!?!?!

  19. Kalini on December 6, 2008 at 12:45 am

Ha-ha! When I think of A Tribe Called Quest I remember “Can I Kick It” and when I think of Q-Tip I remember “Breath And Stop”. You got your driving license in 1993? I was 14 then and in my country you must be 18 in order to get a driving license. You’ve wanted to have a car so much and you’ve worked hard for it. You haven’t treated very nice the people in your car!!! Have you already changed your attitude? Cool, we’ve got now some “Renaissance Rap” from Q-Tip. Thanks for the video! Krassie K.

  21. BrazenEntity on December 5, 2008 at 10:50 pm

My friend MS made D and I Janet Jackson tapes for Christmas, I thought that was cool. I have some indian music on tape, my friend Freddy has a tape player in his car, so we drop it. I miss Fredski, though… Too bad he wanted to possess me… I should’ve let him. My date tonight was an aspiring cough cough GAG actor. His energy is out in the stars. I wish I had’ve been this wise 10 years ago. Going on 11. I just layed there and died on my couch that night. I didn’t believe in curses, Mike. I’m moving to fucking Haiti. Either that, or I’m going to end up barefoot in a village near Millan. I can see that, I’m just a ratty Italian. with a really cool hat. I miss Fredski so much. sigh

  22. PankakeMunky on December 5, 2008 at 9:50 pm

thanks for sharing some good memories and something new to listen to. i almost think it’s funny how you were only 16 in ’93 when most of us here were really little kids and/or were just born. not calling you old or anything…🙂 but yeah, i totally feel for what you meant for having the freedom to listen to what you want. when i first got my car (inherited from my parents), i cranked up my music so loud that i actually blew out the speakers. it was great.

  23. Illara on December 5, 2008 at 8:11 pm

“You don’t like my music? Get out and walk, biiaaatch!” – that sentence stood out the most. LOL!!

  24. Ranger111133 on December 5, 2008 at 7:07 pm

  25. YourConscience on December 5, 2008 at 7:07 pm

gigglesnort I remember recording songs from the radio onto cassettes so that I could play them in my po-dunk little car. Except, my radio sucked, so I’d have to stand perfectly still while it was recording, to prevent static on my tape. Haha. Fun times growing up, eh? =)

  26. HIRAM_CLARKE_713 on December 5, 2008 at 6:34 pm

    luv da biaaatch part..lol

  27. motsy on December 5, 2008 at 6:26 pm

my brother had a honda civic with speakers that took up the entire backseat and hatch. but i had to listen to the likes of judas priest, pantera, metallica, etc.–it taught me to appreciate ALL types of music!

  28. caleb_bozeman on December 5, 2008 at 6:18 pm

the beat of the song sounds alot like Electric Relaxation from Midnight Marauders

  29. lucky_cat on December 5, 2008 at 5:19 pm

Good times. I still have a few cassettes, mixtapes recorded by friends as a gift for me … Thanks for the memories😉

  30. Lori on December 5, 2008 at 5:14 pm

i cant drive…bad times….in my mums car i have to wear my earphones otherwise i have to listen to simply red or the corrs (at worst)…im in the middle of reading peter kays autobiography (excellent british comedian) and he talks about how he needs car music….like even if hes going to the corner shop 2 mins away he needs music

  31. asianotter on December 5, 2008 at 4:40 pm

“You don’t like my music? Get out and walk, biiaaatch!” . . . damn straight! HA! Man, I am beginning to think that almost everyone’s first car was a Honda! And even though looking back your first car and the fact that it may have been a POS . . . it was the greatest because it was YOUR POS! Hahahaha! Thanks for sharing.

  32. lynndarwinharris on December 5, 2008 at 4:34 pm

Q-Tip is good, like you said a few gems, but it does bring back memories! Yeah, I remember my first car, I had the same feeling, Ya don’t like the music, walk! I still have some of my old Cassettes from the 80’s/early 90’s from various music artist, eventhough I got the CD versions later, I still kept the Cassettes from that time period, kept them for memories I quess and kept the Cassette player too. I had to earn money for a car too. Worked as a cashier at a grocery store. My parents helped me out a little too with the first car, I remember feeling so free!! Thanks for this post!!

  33. ShadowerLiltani on December 5, 2008 at 4:05 pm

My high school years vs. your high school years… Why couldn’t I have gone to your high school? I’m sure you know what I’m getting at, and I’ll leave it at that. I miss old school rap so much you have no idea. Back when music actually had substance and artistic value. The only person who I let get away with commercial rap is Jay Z (who has grown on me over the last couple of years), cause he’s actually a smart business-man and he has a nice personality. YAY for A Tribe Called Quest! I miss them… I didn’t really listen to their music, cause I was too young, but I remember them a little, and therefore I miss them.

  34. MS_Ineedyou on December 5, 2008 at 3:39 pm

Does high school bring back good or bad memories for you ?🙂 Does Catiana Christopher ring a bell ?😛

  35. NoMoreSorrowGirl on December 5, 2008 at 3:03 pm

So sweet of you to share your high school life…i like the beat but i don’t like the tone of that dude who rap…it makes me feel like i’m on a rehab…hahaha!maybe it’s just only me!…as everyone said down there you rap better on that dude…your a bit strange when it comes to music…thank God your on a rock band not on a pop group dancing while singing…hahaha!speaking of cassette i have one guess what!?it’s Linkin Park’s Hybrid Theory..hahaha!Take Care:)and thanks for answering my question:))Love Ya!

  36. Hybr1d_7h3ory on December 5, 2008 at 2:39 pm

A Tribe Called Quest is dope. “Can I kick It” is probably my favorite song by them. The best part about driving is that you do get to control the ,music and introduce your friends to the “We Major mix-tape”…🙂 As much as I love the “Rising Tied”, “We Major” just sounds so underground. On a different note, I was watching VH1’s top 100 Hip-Hop Songs of all time, and I was wondering if you had an opinion on that. They had groups such as A Tribe Called Quest, Run DMC, Woo Tang Clan, Warren G which I consider hip hop, then they had them paired up against Eminem, DMX, 50 cent, and Nelly. What do you feel distinguishes Hip-Hop from Rap?

  37. soyuneik on December 5, 2008 at 2:20 pm

Haha, Durg You Rock! What you know about the 8 track/record player combo or the all wood swivel floor TVs? Ah, So nostalgic… Yea, Mike, I was in middle school, wishing I had a car…ah but we rocked that shit anyhow. Matter of fact, a good friend of mine just hit me up a last week and said he met Q-tip. A rep asked for two of his best songs, one of which I co-produced. ;C) Its fun to think about, but I know better.

  38. Chemist999 on December 5, 2008 at 2:19 pm

Durg: It’s great to see someone still can’t give up their phonograph.😀 I could never think of listening Vivaldi from anything else. It just has that special feel, the imperfect sound, and it’s the best medium for Christmas carols.😉

  39. Jaclyn on December 5, 2008 at 2:00 pm

What a cool post!!11 So nice to read about your school years, tell us more stories like that <333 Fine youtube song, love it! take me for a ride bb, key? )))

btw are you gonna to Berlin in January to support rock vs hip hop battle? hehe

  40. analoggirl on December 5, 2008 at 1:31 pm

I love when you wax nostalgic. You prompt me to break out my old jams and smile – “When they reminisce over you, my God.” (Pete Rock & CL Smooth) I saw The Abstract and Tribe at Rock The Bells last year and they killed it. Q-Tip came out with a backpack, delivering his repertoire with so much passion and conviction. At one point, he dived into the crowd to let a girl spit a verse. Rock The Bells was the best show I’ve seen in a long time and it reminded me of what hip hop can be. What’s your favourite hip hop concert?

Mike, thanks for loving music like we do. You honour the music that shaped you, you’re humbled by your success, and you’re still hungry. It doesn’t go unnoticed. 😉

  41. cuz on December 5, 2008 at 1:30 pm

Very nice post, I like the fact you mention the past🙂 “You don’t like my music? Get out and walk, biiaaatch!” made me laugh. Good music. Have a nice day🙂

  42. NataliaForgotten on December 5, 2008 at 1:15 pm

“You don’t like my music? Get out and walk, biiaaatch!” HAHAHA! I just wish I could say that when my parents annoy me while I’m watching my shows in the living room. >:) The music is so good, the video too, the only problem is that I can’t find the lyrics, bah. (Also, the new LPU is awesome, the HT Soldier is pink, haha, good idea! :P)

HELP! Mike, I’m the artist that has been drawing the portraits of all the members of Linkin Park. I received a phone call about 3 weeks ago from today, from one of the managers, saying that I would receive my copies of artwork back autographed in a few days. It’s been three weeks. I’m just worried that maybe it got delivered to the wrong address or something. I’m sorry this has nothing to do with your post, but I don’t know who else to contact or how to contact faster than this. Please help, if you can.

    Sincerely,
    Tabitha Weaver (bluesonicspeed@comcast.net)

  49. murry on December 5, 2008 at 11:56 am

They never make music as good as they did when you were in high school, do they?
I had a ’94 Geo Prizm without even a tape deck, so I rocked the ghetto blaster in the passenger seat. It had shotgun for a whole year, before I got an FM tuner and an MP3 player. Never did get decent speakers in there, but I did okay. And of course, it was usually Reanimation I was blaring, because that was my shit. Still is. Because the first sentence of this comment is the absolute truth.
