In Studio: June 2008 (Flashback)

December 7, 2008

We had all this inspirational art on the walls that was cool for the time, but I think I like the xmas lights (that are up now) better–the pictures made it feel like we were crazy people in a mental institution for some reason. Claustrophobic.

We’ve been working on a few things that might end up being instrumentals, or at least parts of songs that don’t have words. The album will still probably be vocal-based (like our other albums), but there might be a few more instrumental sections…then again, we may throw all those songs out and try something else…

  3. Girl_X on December 13, 2008 at 1:50 am

    I won’t buy it!

    Why should I?!?

To support the lifestyle of a Playmate and other women who don’t have deserved it!

    No, thank you!

  4. NoMoreSorrowGirl on December 11, 2008 at 2:08 pm

  5. tpbarbosa on December 11, 2008 at 9:39 am

A cello? That’s fucking awesome! I’m really excited to see what you’re gonna do with it!
Hey, I just want to congrats you guys again, for the dvd, I know I’ve made it many times, but I watched it again today and I almost died! Was really cool that butterfly flying next to your hand man!! 😀 Jay-Z just rocked out on Jigga what/Faint!
I really loved it! The best dvd I’ve ever seen!! Really energetic, I mean you could feel the crowd.. :just imagining how it must feel .. standing before thousand of people, that just got there to listen to you… I thikn it must be the best feeling in the world:
Rob just… DID it!! He was … speachless amazing awesome.. that drum solo was just unbelivable!

  6. maslosa on December 11, 2008 at 6:28 am

Its really cool that linkin park’s using cellos. Its astounding that bands like Apocalyptica can make such awesome rock music.

  7. Tytto on December 10, 2008 at 7:36 pm

just keep doing your magic with those great songs ;P
for the mind state of all the people in the world please don’t go for the pop vibe

  8. WolfRaptor on December 10, 2008 at 9:05 am

Hey Mike, first time on your actual blog page (I’ve been on LPU for a while).

Gotta say, the addition of a cello really excites me. A couple of other people mentioned Apocalyptica, I’m a big fan of them too. Leave the instrumentals in, hell yeah! It’s not like you’re forced to make an album under 40 minutes, right? Intros, bridges, whatever! LP has grown a lot musically and I’m all for it.

Just make sure not to leave YOUR voice out of it so much this time around! Rap-rock might not be the popular thing right now but you guys are in a class all your own! More rapping! 🙂

  9. JoeyDC on December 10, 2008 at 8:25 am

Your engineer did a good job with the pics ;). Your studio looks very nice. You have no other choice then being creative there ;).

  10. LpOrcaPrincess on December 9, 2008 at 2:52 pm

It’s always great to look back at pictures and remembers those fond memories no matter how funny or twisted they are. Thank you for sharing this with us. You’ve done so much and worked so hard, but im sure in the end it is all worth it. 🙂 Thanks

  11. ThaPark on December 9, 2008 at 1:04 pm

heey mike (: am, nice pics. i remember when i saw some pics of LP in studio recording M2M… i was so happy about that, and now i am happy again for the new cd. it’s very nice ’cause LP have more than 10 years, and you ever did a GREAT job.
ow, btw… those xmans ligths are very nice. here in my house we put on the window. i love xmans… see ya shinoda, have a nice day!

  12. Cuidado on December 9, 2008 at 11:37 am

Hi Mike Shinoda. I would like to use your song “Kenji” for a project in school. It’s a slideshow-video, on the theme ‘against violence and xenophobia’. It’s not for any commercial use. Our teachers told us that we had to get permission from the ones that had wrote the song, in this case it’s you :). I would be very pleased if you could post a permission in like a “response to fans”-post or otherwise (if it’s not to much work) e-mail me; Keep writing good songs 😀

    thanks, from Sweden

  13. murphyLP on December 9, 2008 at 10:52 am

Hey mike what´s up? Sorry for this off topic question!!! Man I really wants to know more about something and you with your experience can clarify to me. How works these Artists Labels? For example… I know you guys have the MACHINE SHOP RECORDINGS and other artists like Justin Timberlake and whatever have their own labels. How it works? You made the decisions? You actually search for new talents? Who came up with this idea? Can you please make a post and explain this…(about MACHINE SHOP role in the music industry..) I think it´s something cool to chat about since we were talking about labels and everything. Thanks… By the way thanks for update and chat with us everyday

  14. dinopower3000 on December 9, 2008 at 7:19 am

oh nooossss! don’t throw them away! if you guys don’t want them you can give them away to us instead! 😀 we’ll give you hugs in return… anyway, i can’t wait for the new album, you guys never disappoint! MTM was amazing by the way, love every bit of it.

  15. Diana on December 9, 2008 at 6:57 am

I think it was about time you went back to doing real complex and elaborate instrumentals (like “Cure For The Itch”). As for things that didn’t make the cut… why include them into your future albums? If they weren’t good enogh to be included, then why not try doing something even better, thus continuing to progress? I don’t know, that’s just how I feel about it…
I don’t hold MTM to heart, I hope you will reconsider the direction in which you seemed to be going with that album… I would personally rather listen to “Qwerty”, than most of the songs on it, but obviously, the choice remains entirely up to you guys.

  16. Shadow on December 9, 2008 at 6:34 am

I hope the album will be vocal-based. The reason is simple: you two have such great voices so I hope to hear them…in general I am just more a “vocal person” than an “instrumental person” (though exceptions appear here and there)…However, surprise us und just do what you guys think sounds best! Whatever it’ll sound like – if YOU feel the album is right I’m sure we’re all with you! I fully trust you guys to bring out the best, just coz that’s my experience of the past years with LP 😉

  17. Sukka3 on December 9, 2008 at 5:52 am

Why why WHY!!! must you scrap them!!! If they dont work in the album, why not consider saving them and releasing something a little later on, maybe an instrumental only lp cd (which… inmy humble opinion would be sick! I ❤ cure for the itch! and wake and wake 2.0 etc) or maybe even as an LPU cd?!?! please consider it!!!

  18. AmyLynette_91 on December 9, 2008 at 5:42 am

“crazy people in a mental institution” i gotta say that is soooo wow! I trust crazy people haahahah… ayy Merry Xmas and Happy new year! I believe December is everybody’s December… Christmas mood!
    cello…interesting… i remember Apocalyptica…
Hey Mike : What is the history behind the song My December? I wish to know.

  19. Zuzaca on December 9, 2008 at 5:15 am

wow :D….”crazy people in a mental institution”….Sometimes I feel same, when I am in my school :D…and could you give this pictures here? 🙂 thanks Zuzača:P

PS: have a nice week and a lot of great ideas

  20. Shinodabestfriend on December 9, 2008 at 4:15 am

My gosh o.O I’ve got very great thoughs about this cd… as say that it has to be wonderful… and maybe these thoughs are true… Linkin Park, make this thoughs real! ^^ big kisses and have a nice work, man…. you always work like amazing… this time it has to be the same… right? 🙂 yes! u.u

  21. tinkerbella26 on December 9, 2008 at 3:16 am

It sounds like you guys get alot of ideas. But how do you decide on which song is right and what’s wrong?? I’d go crazy.. Anyways, thanks for the update Mike!!

  22. rocksylvie on December 9, 2008 at 3:14 am

I love your studio! I didn’t know that Phoenix plays cello. You guys are so cool! I listened some instrumental pieces of yours and I think they sound just great! I’m sure that you are doing a great job! I can’t wait to hear some new pieces of yours! Good luck! Lav ya!

  23. Aditya_the_warrior_within on December 9, 2008 at 1:34 am

thanks for the updates … cool pics 🙂

  24. Dori on December 8, 2008 at 11:00 pm

Thanks for the update Mike! YAH FOR THE PHI PICS!!! Glad to see him on the Cello. Hopefully something comes out of that and makes it on to the album. You look very thoughtful it that last pic there! (:

  25. CuteWhiteBunny on December 8, 2008 at 10:46 pm

    thanks for the update
    the pics are cool too

  26. zimminator on December 8, 2008 at 9:54 pm

hey thanks…..idk if you read my response in the blog, breaking the band, or this was coincidence, but its nice to think that you read what i wrote so i feel special :). very nice info to know, actually it would be cool if you made an instrumental song, then had joe tweak it! somethin to ponder!

  27. Doggie24690 on December 8, 2008 at 9:39 pm

Thanks you for keeping us updated… and the pictures. Cello, eh? I’m excited… I love non-conventional instruments in rock. They add texture, color, etc. For example, Apocolyptica. Can’t wait for the new album! 🙂

  28. NataliaForgotten on December 8, 2008 at 9:17 pm

Well, there are two vocalists in the band, it’s not weird that your albuns are vocal-based. 😛 I think you guys should put a few more solos, I love solos! And in the second pic your face is really awesome, haha! So concerned. Phi playing the cello looks awesome too, I knew he plays it. Loved the pics. 😀 (even if they look a bit, eerm, weird)

  29. Ezza on December 8, 2008 at 5:49 pm

well since phoenix is playing cello on some songs how about some trumpet from brad on some songs? the thing that gets me with ur music is the fact that is can sound so complicated but in reality its just alot of simple things put together and i notice sometimes when the subtle things are missing in a live performance, most of the time the live version is better than whats on the studio cd. which makes me want to go to ur show its just that my life always seems to clash with ur tour! i’ll work it out one day XD…hmm could u sing more on the next album? u have an awesome voice, oh and i find that singing helps with controlling asthma symptoms too 🙂 the more u use it the better

  30. withyou on December 8, 2008 at 5:37 pm

That’s right. You know, just when I thought I’d seen it all Phoenix suprises me by playing the Cello (Ifound that out last year!)
but I recently found about Mr.Hahn playing the guitar along side with you on the Sold My Soul To Yo Mama track which pretty amazing btw. Even though I’ve been a fan for over nine years, I’m still learning new things about you guys. That’s fine. I always say that you guys are no longer talented, you’re beyond that because # 1 LP is phenomenal and #2 talented is used to much and would not justify the words to to describe the band Linkin Park. And I know phenomenal has been used one too many also. There just isn’t a word, if there was I would be using it

  31. ShadowerLiltani on December 8, 2008 at 5:34 pm

That’s interesting, having more instrumentals. I personally favor your instrumental works over your lyrics/vocals, since there is a lot of power behind your instrumentals. I highly recommend fans on here look up the lyric-less versions of your songs on youtube, because there’s little details we sometimes don’t notice when we are too busy listening to the lyrics. Oh, and I’ve been waiting for Phi to pick up the cello again.

  32. lucky_cat on December 8, 2008 at 4:37 pm

Xmas lights and Cello music … ahhh, it’s getting warmer!
You’re really making us curious, Mike 🙂

  33. Mr_Huhn on December 8, 2008 at 4:26 pm

    xmas lights look great! lol

  34. Vixenla on December 8, 2008 at 3:24 pm

Phoenix playing the cello is awesome! Hope he sings on the album. That would be great! Better yet, two words…..”Snax Attack” laughs Yay Phi!!

  35. Kravantos on December 8, 2008 at 3:13 pm

Hey is this for their new record or some other project

  36. KarinaS on December 8, 2008 at 2:38 pm

Mike, you really don’t know how lovely you are. And I’m so crazy about you, all your band… You, and the guys from Linkin Park are all I need to be fine, do you understand me? My english it’s so bad, and I know that, but I wish that you can understand me, maybe answer me on this blog. I love you, all you do, things you post here. I wish you’re ok, and tell Phoenix that he’s so cute playing cello! So cutie, Phoenix, you’re the best one. ♥

  37. Madlen on December 8, 2008 at 1:30 pm

I saw those photos even before you posted!HA!You uploaded them earlier:DIt’s really cool to see Phoenix back on the cello:DWill we hear some of that?

  38. thenewLinkinPete on December 8, 2008 at 1:26 pm

I have been wondering if Phoenix still plays cello, apparently he does. Coool. This reminds me: no offence to you, Mike, but it seems most of the interviews, magazine stories etc. feature you or Chaz. Nothing wrong with that, though, but to me it seems the media ppl don´t give so much credit to the other guys, at least that´s how it seems at times. Or in general, I´d rather ask you guys about making music than comment on how cute you are (surely you are, though =) I know that is also what you concentrate on the most, making and performing songs. Otherwise, this sounds exciting, I like that scetchy athmopsphere. Can´t wait to hear more! Love to you all.

  39. linkinparc on December 8, 2008 at 12:32 pm

Its a shame that not soo many guys outta there don’t know all the different talents dave has…dats sad…bt..

omg is it an instrumental? COZ as i told u millionths time…Im still waiting for an instrumental album, wif stuff like public service announcement, wake, foreword, a.o6…all that stuff…
keep that i mind please..or atleast one instrumental on the new record, but I Guess the first track will be one like wake and foreword?

and LPU8 is just the best layout…lol its amazin i love it…and mmm cookies…jeez guys u r so funny and dont wonder if granmommys like u… bt psst u r still those kickin-ass-rockers i love so much =D

  40. rockermeg on December 8, 2008 at 11:17 am

    Phoenix can play cello???
Aaw Mike your pretty face is hidden behind the Mac,ahaha
Those pictures are oddly arranged. Its better than recording rooms at school-small white rooms with no windows and bad acoustics. Addy sat in the corner saying “I’m like one of those mental patients who sit in the corner all day screaming their own name” and she did…makes for brilliant Youtube material 😉
Yay for instrumentals!!You need to sing more Mike;you have a beautiful voice! But I also love your rap parts…I’m sure you’ll reach a compromise! Hehee
    Good luck!!

  41. missdunno on December 8, 2008 at 10:35 am

More instrumental? It means that we’re not gonna hear your beautiful voice a lot, Mike… Anyway, do what you guys feel like! I can’t wait to hear the new stuff!

  42. petiterocker on December 8, 2008 at 10:33 am

i’m exited to hear some of the stuff you’re working on right now, specially dave on the cello would be cool, i’d love to see him play it live again some day, maybe accompanied by rob on the piano? that would make my day. other than that, i had a question on how it was that you managed to impress the people at WB when discussing your contract (just started Passman’s book which made me even more curious) and it made me curious as to which extend you still work with an A&R (Blue if i’m correct, which was where brad did his intern or something?) because you guys seem to have everything inorder. other than that, looking at commercialism, would you change something about LP’s commercial status?

  43. Ewelina16 on December 8, 2008 at 10:19 am

Ooo, regards to Phoenix! That’s really amazing!
Yea, I like the xmas lights too, it’s so shiny with them 😉 anyway, thx a lot for informing us Mike! It would be very interesting to add more instrumentals! good luck!!!!!

  44. Diana_LP_adicted on December 8, 2008 at 9:54 am

wow… phoenix playing cello…! few instrumental songs would be awesome mike… good luck with the future new album…i know that will be a great album …absolutly great.. NO DOUBT! I LOVED NO ROADS LEFT..PLEASE SING A SONG ALONE ON THE NEW ALBUM =D

  45. Kalini on December 8, 2008 at 9:47 am

I don’t think you’ll throw those songs out, I think you’ll keep them on a “save hard drive”. It’s a good idea to add more instrumentals. Sometimes when the music is too good, it doesn’t need words. Seeing Phoenix playing the cello, remembered a photo of his from the studio in your Photos section, called “Phoenix multi tasking”. Amazing! There are 2 vocalists in the band, so the album has to be vocal-based. Yeah, Christmas spirit in the studio! I enjoyed it today in my working place. I decorated on Friday the Christmas tree in my office and put the lights and the office looks great now! Thanks for the info! Krassie

  46. Substance on December 8, 2008 at 9:21 am

I must be missing something here, if these shots were taken after Road to Revolution, how come you have Christmas lights in there !! Didn’t take them down from last year ?! Lol

And I’ve tried looking, but I was wondering what that list is behind Pheonix. I can’t wait till even the worst cameras available are something which is a Million times better than ones available today, that way we’ll be able to zoom right in and be able to read everything !

Keep up the good work Mike, Keep progressing like you did on MTM, it was by far the best album in every way.

Gonna be amazing to have LP, Dead By Sunrise and Julien-K’s album out in the same year.

  47. harakiri on December 8, 2008 at 9:19 am

instrumental sounds awesome! i love all instrumentals you’ve previously done, which doesn’t mean you should make less vocal music, of course… :p a few more than just one instrumental per album would be cool, though…

  48. nikkiann0100 on December 8, 2008 at 8:15 am

I think a few instrumental songs would be nice. I like the christmas lights too. 🙂

  49. keira93 on December 8, 2008 at 8:11 am

    HI MIKE 🙂

  50. elenalp on December 8, 2008 at 8:04 am

it’s cool that you like xmas lights! they look beautiful. good luck in making the album!

  51. Lynnie on December 8, 2008 at 7:59 am

~Returns to comment from the merry-go-round that is ‘signing in’~
‘The album will still probably be vocal-based…’ …probably?
    Hell, no, dude!
I am interested to hear the new stuff (I haven’t had a reason to be critical in far too long-lol)… but try not to go too instrumental if you can help it… we have Oingo Boingo for that!
Just kidding – good luck with the album, but I’d really love to hear a lot of vocals.
Loving the pensive look on Mike’s face! Lol.
Can I borrow it so it actually looks like I’m working on my Visual Basic assignment?

  52. miKer0cks on December 8, 2008 at 7:33 am

Wow!!! Phi playning chelo!!! o.O I’m impressed!!! Btw I preferteh studio with the x-mas lights better too, it’s more cozy and has something in it that makes it more fun to work there 🙂 I’m glad you guys are working on the new album, but these days are sad for me too….If you Mike, didn’t hear about it yet (i’m sure you have) check this out…

I can’t believe things like that can happen in my country 😦

  53. Monciukaz on December 8, 2008 at 6:50 am

Hey.. Mike dont throw all those songs out.. First you have making new album.. Later you can try something else…

  54. AS_21 on December 8, 2008 at 5:50 am

😉 I heard that this album is gonna be kinda “conceptual’, right? I’m curious what you’re gonna make.. anyway instrumental parts are really cool at every album (even if they have only few seconds) I liked the idea of instrumental sections, they really make album more varied. I’m looking forward to realise of that album. Can’t wait to hear what you’ve made.

I agree. you have great studio xP thank you for infos 😉 we appreciate

  55. zahra on December 8, 2008 at 5:19 am

omg u answer a comment!!! i saw the person who asked this qustion about phinex play that and wwwwwwwoow u answered!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙂 omg i really cant wait to hear what u guys are up too!!! it seems like ur making another master piece …….u guys are sooo the best band in the world!!!!! ROCK ON MIKE…..

  56. LPmAgaS on December 8, 2008 at 5:12 am

Hey , Mike I can’t wait for your album , and I’m looking forward to buy it!!!

  57. alex86 on December 8, 2008 at 5:03 am

aww, mike, that something on your head looks so cute… like a lemur! (i couln’t stop myself).

and you should put this instrumentals on the next LPU. not that i really care, tho, that just came to my mind xD

  58. lufluf on December 8, 2008 at 4:55 am

I think you guys make incredibly beautiful instrumental songs. I love bands like Mogwai, Sigur Ros, Explosions in the sky and your instrumental music is good and has its own unique sound. From the start Technique, Cure for the itch, instrumental tracks in Reanimation, Session, instrumental tracks in LPU albums and then Wake. It’s just getting better and better. Wake is even better when you play it live. Other Linkin Park guys say that they love to play the little things give you away because it’s different. Personally it’s my favorite too and I think Wake is that kind of a song goes with tltgya, has that same I-can-listen-that-song-on-and-on-vibe. Make instrumental music, you are good at it

  59. Aqua101 on December 8, 2008 at 4:49 am

That’s more like it, Mikey! Love to see more pics of you guys, especially working on the studio. Geez, I missed some of yr updates (busy lately at job). Wow…where did u get those ‘inspirational’ stuffs’? It does make the studio looks like a mental room…Ha-Ha-Ha! And I agreed w/ Wello’s comment : Phi do the cello classical sounds, Joe do the scratching sounds, Brad & Rob do the raving beat. Put it all together, then you’ll make a new world of music! Please….Please….Please…something like “reanimation” sound, of course, w/ the combination of your unbeatable rapping & screaming of Chester. That would be AWESOME! Have fun! ♥

  60. Janine1978 on December 8, 2008 at 4:33 am

Hi Mike, thank you for your update. You write that you have a few more instrumental sections in the new album will bring. I find that good. But please make a little more songs where you rapping! Do not misunderstand me – I love very Chesters voice … I think it’s great just stop, when you get the parts to make rap. I wish you guys all the best and much strength for the new album. And a nice Christmas time with your families and your friends.

LP ROCKS (I’m apologize for my bad english ; ))

  61. eleni1997 on December 8, 2008 at 4:12 am

I can’t wait for your new album LP!…

  62. YuN_RoCks on December 8, 2008 at 3:46 am

I love your instrumentals guys, your pianos Mike have always something magical and Phi on the cello looks great!
so these pics are from june 08, near the Heineken Jammin Festival somehow. I know you’ll ignore me, but I feel like reminding you that you PROMISED { } to give back my banner, but you actually didn’t. THIEF! and liar T_T but I can’t stop loving you anyway.

  63. ThunderStrike on December 8, 2008 at 3:42 am

Cello…..that reminds me Blood+….hey, I’m going a bit off topic here, but a girl in the Rising Tied booklet (the same one as on the Where’d You Go single) seems to be anime based, so I couldn’t help but wonder if you get some sort of inspiration from anime?

  64. SK_2008_LV on December 8, 2008 at 3:26 am

Phoenix playing cello.. so sweet :)))))
And about instrumental music. I like “Wake” so much. It sounds like a soundtrack for fantasy action movie 😉 I hope new instumental pieces will be great too 🙂

  65. PekiLinkinFan on December 8, 2008 at 3:10 am

I agree with MrHeavySilence.. Start rapping again… I love your rapping..
The new album will be like the old albums or will be like MTM…
    I’m curious about that..

  66. JadeGirl on December 8, 2008 at 3:03 am

Mike, the 3rd album was quite different . The last album was a huge departure from the LP we knew. It was a beautifully crafted album though (no offense) if a little bit (note the words) disappointing. Will the next one also be different from the last three?

  67. Natily on December 8, 2008 at 1:59 am

yeah, I’m looking forward to your new album!! You are simply the best so this album will be just as awesome
as the other LP albums..I really love the fact that this album will include some instrumental parts. I remember the instrumental song ‘Opening’ on the album Reanimation..That’s one of my favourite songs because it sounds very different and just beautiful!
much fun at the new record xD
    greets Natalie

  68. MrHeavySilence on December 8, 2008 at 1:47 am

Mike, please start rapping again! Its awesome that you have other outlets to express yourself through (keys, guitar, painting), but honestly, my favorite mode of expression from you is your rapping. Maybe some LP fans don’t feel the same way; hell, some of them don’t even like Rap. But there are also a lot of LP fans that exist BECAUSE of your raps. So don’t mute your lyrical talents to just 2 songs on every new album! If you can’t express that side of you in LP, release another Fort Minor album!

  69. Umi on December 8, 2008 at 1:13 am

I like reading about your studio work and seeing some pictures of it 🙂 Btw, will we ever see Phoenix playing the cello on stage? In January, when a friend of me, who went to your show in Cologne told me, you did In Between there, I already got my hopes up to see that on youtube but… well, no cello, just keyboard… still an awesome (okay, to be honest, more a sweet – sorry) performance btw. Love that song, though I’m still hoping for No Roads Left some day and no, I won’t forget that song, no matter how many new albums will follow XD I can’t help it, for me the lyrics of NRL are some of the best of all of your newer songs (or at least the ones I can identify the most with). Greetz! ~Umi

  71. rcfsu on December 7, 2008 at 11:14 pm

while i like the instrumentals and the use of weird instruments aka the cello, lets rock it out on this one mike!

  72. ms_shock on December 7, 2008 at 10:36 pm

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THAT’s what i was waiting for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 5 stars! Thank you! Still love your studio xD

  73. lpfaint43 on December 7, 2008 at 10:33 pm

cool cool:P like to hear about new album stuff

  74. Hawaii_LP_fan on December 7, 2008 at 10:32 pm

Cool pics Mr. Mike :o) Cello & violin music has a melancholy vibe to it…very beautiful. I love it & look forward to LP’s new music. The xmas lights do cheer the room up. Tiny blasts of color to bring a festive atmosphere in the LP castle, how cool is that? Do you guys need someone to dust the audio panel or sweep the studio or tidy up the wires? Cause, I’d DEFINITELY apply! Um, I’m sure so would the 1 billion other LP fans…. haha, j/k. It’s great to see a pic of you!

  75. BA on December 7, 2008 at 10:18 pm

Hey Mike. B.A here, its nice to see Phoenix playing the cello again, i like where this may be going. If you guys do end up with alot of instrumentals don’t trash them please. Put some up at LPU for us to check out & enjoy, or maybe if you have enough of them you guys could put out an instrumental album like Nine Inch Nails – Ghosts. I would really like to see that possibly happen. Please think about it. Looking forward to the new stuff. Take care & Happy Holidays!

  76. noidea on December 7, 2008 at 8:53 pm

wow Phoenix on cello again!!! He should do more of that. Hope to see him play cello live again. I love the krwling intro.
BTW, Dear Mike, Do you have lyrics for LPU8 CD? Although I’ve been studied in US for 2 yrs, it’s still hard for me to catch all the words in songs. It sounds really hillarious of those songs base on what I can catch. However, it will be really nice if I can know all the lyrics. haha I tried to google on the internet but it seems no lyrics site have them. Thanks.

  77. Hybr1d_7h3ory on December 7, 2008 at 8:38 pm

Those are some really good pictures. The mood in the room seems very “vibe-ish”. I think Mike that you photoshopped that notepad in the second one, because the look that is on your face is the same one I would have if I had no idea which button to push. I really like the instrumental stuff you guys go such as “Wake”, it sets you apart form the rest of the crowd.

Really nice update Mike, I look forward to some more…Hybr1d_7h3ory

  78. Jaclyn on December 7, 2008 at 8:10 pm

Wish I were a cat in your studio ;)) Cool post, btw i like such kinda rooms, it looks warm and cozy. Maybe i’m a crazy one next door in that mental house but tell me pls how could you manage to sit there in June after Milton Keynes coz in June only one day’s left ?

  79. p_lane on December 7, 2008 at 8:06 pm

I usually don’t do this, but I’m going to fangirl over Phe playing the cello. Right. . .about. . .now!

  80. soyuneik on December 7, 2008 at 7:36 pm

So lucky… I would give organs a blood to sit in that room for a few hours. LOL One might think I meant with you guys in it…haha, but that’s not the case. I mean, just look at the curves on that Cello. ;C) ColorScheming said something interesting… (See: Reanimation) But, I agree with your thoughts on another.

  81. FCastro on December 7, 2008 at 7:34 pm

Hey, was Phoenix trying something with a cello?? to me is really interesting see my favorite band using some instruments that aren’t commom. I’d like to see the results soon, I’m waiting for updates about the work on the next album 😀

  82. beamer87 on December 7, 2008 at 7:04 pm

Thanks for the tease, it’s sick to see you guys at work though, I must admit. One doesn’t usually get enjoyment out of watching other people work.

  83. JesusVLP on December 7, 2008 at 6:56 pm

Hello Mike, All That I want to say is that your band is the best band of this entire world! Im waiting for the new album for still rocking with you guys.

I dint know that phoenix can play the cello, that is awesome!

ANd the road to revolution RULES!

  84. ThePrincess on December 7, 2008 at 6:40 pm

OH Fuck..Princess must Shocked if she saw this..she has long been waiting you to posting your new pic.. damn.. she will fall back. but thanks anyway for the great pic, although that have been too late .. by the way we like the way you spell ‘Claustrophobic’ word very sexy Mr Shinoda .and that is a very cool studio.. keep the spirit of good work guys..we believe you guys will make the great album.

PS : PRINCESS please Don’t saw direct to the picture.. seriously that will kill you

  85. faiintx on December 7, 2008 at 6:35 pm

mike, once again, i would like to comment on how awesome you and the rest of the band is.
i am VERY excited for the new album!! i love anything you guys do =]

and phoenix can play the cello?? :O
that’s awesome! cello and LP makes a good combination, too =]

lol @ you and chester “helping”. chester’s expression looks funny in that picture =P and i wish i could see yours but it’s blocked by the computer…

anyway mike, you are my idol – and so is everyone else in LP.

=] can’t wait for more updates!!

and btw, is it possible to get any info on chester’s solo album? i’m VERY VERY excited about that as well =]

  86. Rez on December 7, 2008 at 6:14 pm

Nice pics! Definitely exciting stuff for us fans. The X-Mas lights look messy, but whatever works for you guys! Also, regarding the new album hopefully it will be more progressive technically. I liked what you guys did on MTM, but some songs like Leave Out All the Rest felt stagnant, specially Brad’s guitar part. Hopefully you guys will challenge yourselves to write or compose more interesting sounds. Bleed it Out on the other hand is brilliant. Not only is it my favorite LP song lyrically, but musically it’s terrific. It seems to me you are at your best when your not trying so damn hard! LOL! Anyway, looking forward greatly to the next album. Peace!

  87. ColorScheming on December 7, 2008 at 5:49 pm

Okay so I stopped coming here just out of boredom. I am so glad that this was the first post i came in on. Its great to see you guys in the studio even though it was earlier this year! Can’t wait for the next album.

Also, to Ms_indeedyou, By throw out i think he meant just let not use any of the songs or instrumentals and start over.

P.s you should come out with another solo project and work with underground rappers. That would be incredible. Ive said it previously but i can’t help but think how amazing it would be for you to do a track with someone along the likes of sage francis.

Whats up with the S.O.B record?

One more question… Do you listen to underground hip hop at all?

  88. sterilepoon on December 7, 2008 at 5:27 pm

I LOVE when you guys use live strings in the music. Seeing Phoenix with his cello makes me wish I’d never given it up. PS. I agree; that room makes me feel claustrophobic, too. Here’s to hoping the new album doesn’t translate any of that >.>

  89. Brittney on December 7, 2008 at 5:01 pm

I didn’t know Phx could play cello. That’s awesome :]
Know what else is awesome? Linkin Park instrumentals.

  90. MarishkaLP on December 7, 2008 at 5:00 pm

cello – that’s great! wish you luck working on an album! great photos btw! thanx for sharing! 🙂

  91. pepper on December 7, 2008 at 4:52 pm

I agree with undercovershinoda, seeing these pictures of you guys in the studio just making music is the most beautiful thing you could put up on the site, it makes us so incredibly happy and excited!

Bit of an unrelated question: this may be dumb, but Mike I was wondering if you would suggest learning music theory before going into audio production. I’m in a theory class now but I honestly don’t know anything about audio production and I don’t know what extents the two coincide. In the terms of audio production, it seems more technical and about how to work the equipment then having to know which chords were suspensions or nonharmonic tones, know what I mean? :/

  92. murry on December 7, 2008 at 4:33 pm

When I read “inspirational pictures,” I thought of motivational posters and imagined you having things like “Hang in there, kitty!” hanging up. It was a really cute thought, I’m not gonna lie. I may have giggled a little.

  93. undercovershinoda on December 7, 2008 at 4:29 pm

Does your idea of helping mean “youtubing funny shit”? XP It’s nice to see pictures of you guys working, it really is – it’s the most wonderful thing like you wouldn’t believe. :]] Seeing Phi on a cello is nice.

  94. MS_Ineedyou on December 7, 2008 at 4:28 pm

When you mean “throw out the songs” do you mean have all the tracks instrumental ? o.O

  95. tearzofblood on December 7, 2008 at 4:28 pm

Its gonna be a linkin park cd and thats all that matters. i love the instrumentals as well so itll be cool either way. cant wait for the new cd!!!

  96. relieff on December 7, 2008 at 4:25 pm

Cellos, cellos is it because (i think) brad listenes to yo yo ma? So the new songs will “smell of Christmas spirit” yeah? But abit of “dark side” in it? 😉 am i right?:0

  97. Ash_Qwerty on December 7, 2008 at 4:22 pm

‘Helping’ :-). On the first pic, it looks like Mike has seen something cool on the internet (probably a YouTube video) and Chester has found something shiny to concentrate on 🙂 And as for the second pic, Mike was probably just daydreaming haha 🙂

  98. GigaScythe on December 7, 2008 at 4:22 pm

Very cool, can’t wait to hear some new material 🙂 I always enjoy seeing some in-studio pics, hope you guys are having fun.

I feel awkward throwing this out here… but I cover some of your songs on YouTube at Erk, check it out if you can… and once again, hope everything in the studio goes well!

  99. cuz on December 7, 2008 at 4:11 pm

Oh, I love cello! Thanks for the photos, it’s always nice to be updated 🙂 Hope you’re having a great time recording the album!

  100. analoggirl on December 7, 2008 at 3:56 pm

For Christmas, I’d like a Cello Phoenix with bow action grip, please. LOL On a more serious note, I love to see Phoenix play the cello and I can’t wait to hear the finished product. I’m also excited at the prospect of having some instrumental tracks on the next album. 🙂

Also, it’s always cool to see the photos what people put up in their studios/offices/war rooms for inspiration. Where does the band draw its inspiration from these days? Life? Current events? Obama-nation? Pop culture?

  101. crystalrussianla on December 7, 2008 at 3:54 pm

oh wow I can’t wait to here the new album I’m so happy for you guys
Well I’m still in vegas I’m on my ituch so I’m have a hard time typing to u
And I may be geting married soon he’s in new York and he don’t listen to rock music so that suck for me he’s not a LP fan.LOL well mike that’s it happy to here the news about the album keep up the good work oh and ask chester when club tatto is opening up here in LV and let me no babe thank u

  102. Wello on December 7, 2008 at 3:53 pm

Maybe you should put in a skylight for that room, that’d be neat and would literally lighten the mood of your mental institute. ;D (Though i’m pretty sure it would mess up your acoustics, sorry)

Yay! Thanks for posting pictures! It brightens up the atmosphere while we wait for the new album. 😀 Cello sounds great for another twist in the album and btw, tell Brad to pull out his old trumpet. If you have a classical take with Phi and Brad and then have Mr. Hahn scratching i think you’d change the world of music. Mmmmmmmm…delicious. ❤

  103. asaulp on December 7, 2008 at 3:44 pm

Although I prefer the old LP sound over the new one, I’ve come to accept that Linkin Park has changed, and it’s for the better. You guys are older now – more versatile and appealing – so I’m excited for the new album, especially the instrumental sections.. hope there isn’t any mental congestion, and you guys get the album out as you anticipated. I love strings, so I’m excited for that cello sound!

  104. liope on December 7, 2008 at 3:36 pm

That’s great news!! And don’t worry Mike your “help” sounds awesome!!! 😉 Have fun!!

  105. Zephran on December 7, 2008 at 3:36 pm

Sounds, and looks really cool Mike! Really looking forward to the new stuff.

I just recently recorded a song with my “band”.. A cover of Kiss’ ‘Heavens on fire’.. It was the first time I worked in a studio, and even though it was a really cheap one I loved every second of it and hope I will get more done soon 🙂 But we did it all for a school project, gonna put a video up on youtube soon and if its good we might make more!

Thanks for all the tips you’re giving on here, really appreciate it.

  106. Ranger111133 on December 7, 2008 at 3:35 pm

ohh sweet!!!!!! THE NEW ALBUM IS GOING TO BE AWSOME!!!! can u tell us if its going to be a completely different style from ur old CD’s or if its going to be like meteora?

I’M THE FIRST, I’M THE FIRST! [I’m not the first… aahhh]
I cant write a good comment….I’m a little crazy right now…I passed about 7 hours trying to answer the big test of my life…
    Damn… ¬¬’
I know these pics…[I guess I saw them in this blog] so how can you tell me that I dont know who just send you them??

I HAVE TO ASK YOU: WHEN YOU’RE COMING TO BRAAAZIL?? I’m waiting since 2004!

  111. PankakeMunky on December 7, 2008 at 3:11 pm

that’s awesome about having phoenix play some cello. i’m a fan of those who put in classical music and mix it into urban music. it just creates a cool element to the sound. for the pictures on the walls, were they random images that were taped on the walls? i swear i see a deer in one of them for the 2nd picture… but i like your christmas lights idea. it lightens up the “mental institution” with some christmas spirit. 😛

  112. Bajannez on December 7, 2008 at 3:11 pm

I love instrumentals, sounds awesome to me! But yeah, you never know what will end up being there when it’s you guys. Looking forward to it. Could be awesome with some more Chello in your music, sounded great on Reanimation. Then Dave could play it live like he did when you guys were playing KROQ the first time. – By the way, LP don’t want guest apperances on their full albums, Mike said that.

  113. pollawec on December 7, 2008 at 3:10 pm

Good work, when is the album likely to drop and will there be any guest appearances?
