ProTools 8: Mike in the Studio

December 10, 2008

Thanks to DigiDesign, I got a chance to preview the new ProTools 8. I made a short new instrumental song on it. Here’s a link to the video, which includes audio of the song.

Sparkart is working on making the videos embeddable. For now, please just put the link up if you want to pass this around.

i must add my voice to the chorus of requests for a download of the song.

i don’t know if you fully realise this, mike, but when you guys make a song, even just a little one to kill time or try something out, even something you don’t think is worth saving, it is still so far above and beyond most music that it’s a shame to not make it available.

  4. deanwin on December 26, 2008 at 6:49 am

    HEy mike

So far the new track sounds good. I was wondering for your art show, are you going to asia to showcase your artwork, also if you guys are going to do show in the philippines in the near future
    thanks

  5. nillp on December 16, 2008 at 1:49 pm

really good that instrumental you were working on..

hope the new album will sound something like that one.. since that ‘song’ seems different, fresh and new..

i’m really excited waiting for new stuffs!

someone said that “Mike Shinoda = GENIUS”.. this is FACT.

    anyway. have a great day.

    see ya. mk’nil :*

  6. Nancy on December 14, 2008 at 8:52 pm

awesome! really like it and looking forward to hearing the new album~~~

  7. Ezza on December 14, 2008 at 4:04 pm

that track sounded cool as cant wait to hear ur new album🙂

does pro tools have realistic midi files or in programme instruments that u can make ur own loops with?
since i know i’ll never be as talented as one of my friends who basically touches an instrument and can play it like a pro in no time and right now in this space of time dont have a band who can help me.

the other thing is how does it run with vista home premium cuz ive heard ppl having probs with it and i really dont wanna crash my laptop that i got 6 mnths ago and cant afford an apple with the good specs even with the whole $150 student discount! ( V. irritating )

  8. Lynnie on December 13, 2008 at 3:03 pm

Okay, apparently my last comment was removed, cause I can’t find it – and I know I posted one.
    ~Tries again~
    That track sounds awesome!
I wish I understood Pro-Tools, but Visual Basic Studio ‘if’ statements allowing for validation rules in the loops while importing the math class to discover 10% of the variable ‘p’ dimmed as integer is about as much as my brain will allow.
    ~
    And loving Rob’s hair…can I stroke it? =)
    ~Innocent~
    …what?

  9. nickdube on December 13, 2008 at 10:22 am

    Mike Shinoda = GENIUS.

That shit was so sick. Mike, PLEASE release another Fort Minor album!!! Take that ish to the next level, son!!!

Seriously though, I love Linkin Park and cannot wait for the next album. But, I think I can speak for everyone when I say you should really release another Fort Minor record. The Rising Tied is so killer and I still listen to it almost daily. I need some more M. Shinoda tracks with S.O.B.!!!

  10. MS_Ineedyou on December 13, 2008 at 9:38 am

The instrumental was really pretty … Like REALLY pretty …

  12. Mickey on December 12, 2008 at 3:45 pm

Hehe, you’re such a geek, Mike. But yeah, even though I have absolutely no clue about ProTools, it sounds like you’re really excited about it.
And the audio sounds really cool.

  13. Mikado on December 12, 2008 at 3:52 am

Hi Mike. I always LOVE watching every new video of you and your band. What a pleasure! lol …and the audio you made on protools 8 sounds absolutely great. I love it right from the beginnig. Maybe you could put it as bonus-track on your next
    LP record. Thanks!!!
    Have a nice day.

The instrumental snippet you shared with us is melancholy beautiful. I LOVE it! The melody formed goose bumps from the inside out….WOW! And this was created on the fly! I’m looking forward to LP’s album next year with bated breath! haha Good to see Mr. Rob doin’ his thing…my favorite drummer! :o) Thank you Mr. Mike for taking the time to share your creativity/work time with us…be inspired! You guys are amazing!

  18. spraypaintNinkpens on December 11, 2008 at 5:07 pm

This is the best piece of music I’ve heard from you guys in years. I really hope the new album sounds a lot like this.

  19. BA on December 11, 2008 at 4:46 pm

Hey Mike, B.A here. I’m really digging the track you made with the new ProTools 8. The song sounds alot deeper & darker for LP which is awesome. I see you guys are recording like a hip-hop system again, making instrumentals first then putting lyrics down. Good stuff, I can see this song being really great with lyrics that have as much meaning & depth as the music itself. It sounds like you guys are really ready to getting underway with this new album. Take as much time as you guys feel you need to, so this new record can be the best it can possibly be. I don’t care how long it takes for the album to get done, I care about how good this album can become. Off to a good start, Good Luck.

  20. moskitomagnet on December 11, 2008 at 4:34 pm

  35. Rolf_M on December 11, 2008 at 12:31 pm

They actually sounded really awesome. That instrumental track would made a great outro or intro for a record, it really catched even though you just were messing around with your new tools…I hope you guys will get a new album out in 2009 and come to Denmark and play a concert again, I really look foward to see you guys live again and hearing some new stuff from you. Anyways, have a nice Christmas and keep up the good work with the new record🙂

    Very cool instrumental Mike!!
Hope you guys are gonna make more music like that and share it with us🙂

  46. Lvix on December 11, 2008 at 10:27 am

Mike, if it depends on me…
I think you guys need no producer for the album…
I think you can produce it on your own!

Actually, is there a reason why you guys should hire a producer?

  47. Joanna on December 11, 2008 at 10:11 am

If that was just a TINY sample of what you guys have done for the new record, and it’s not even going to be out til probably later in ’09, then the record you guys are making is going to be incredible.

  48. zahra on December 11, 2008 at 9:55 am

Mike, I don’t think you feel like working in the studio, it looks like you’re having fun in the studio. It’s great to see you smiling and so energetic! The instrumental song is more than amazing, so full of energy…. I’m speechless… It’s perfect for a movie soundtrack. Thinking about it, it reminded me of U2’s instrumental for Mission Impossible’s soundtrack. Just a thought. I’m happy that the new ProTools 8 will make your job easier. Keep on making beautiful music and enjoy your work! Thanks for the video! Krassie

  54. burningdaylight on December 11, 2008 at 8:29 am

    Keep up good work🙂

  60. D3lta on December 11, 2008 at 6:57 am

Digidesign really listened to their LE customer base with this release. Upping the track count to 48 for standard, and allowing it to expand to 128 voices. NRG uses an HD rig so that’s not really important for them, but the new MIDI functionality, and Sibilus integration is sick. So when you mock up an orchestra piece in MIDI, you print the music off, and they can play it live. VERY cool. You also get more plugin inserts, more AUX’s, I think more bus’s, I may be wrong. Also, Pankakemunky, you don’t have to use the mouse to copy and paste in any of the PT versions. Simply use CTRL + C and CTRL + V or if you’re on a Mac I think it’s Option. Take it out of slip mode and into grid to be quicker.

  61. Scottckr on December 11, 2008 at 6:40 am

whoa, I like it, put it up as a high-quality mp3 or smth on the blog, thx ;D

  64. PankakeMunky on December 11, 2008 at 6:17 am

that’s cool that protools 8 allows you to do the copying and pasting thing without even clicking that much on the mouse. i can’t imagine trying to copy and paste parts of a song over and over again because it didn’t have an easier way in the past. that would probably drive me nuts. the instrumental song sounds amazing. hopefully everything else is going well also.🙂

  65. Linkin_Paranoik on December 11, 2008 at 5:44 am

Get outta my head man. I swear I spent all day trying to figure out which way I wanted to die
via Digidesign.(see: prices) So I think I’ve decided to go with the “I’m never going to have a car”
package. Which is Protools HD, the cards, the c24, and doodads. I’m a Protools noob, so this will be a huge step.
I’ve reach a point where my current setup is holding me back, I’m just wondering if HD is too much?
I’m still researching it, but if you have any Protools veteran info you’d like to share with me, I’d definitely be grateful.
Pros and Cons? Latency issues? Will I have to know rocket science to sync my Akai mpc up to it?

  80. LPfeather on December 11, 2008 at 2:45 am

I heard the “Mike Shinoda touch” in it. The end of the track reminded me the end of “Slip out the back” by you and Mr Joe Hahn. That’s funny because this one is my FM favorite song.

    Anyway, THANKS FOR SHARING w00t!

PS: i’m a hiphop listener, and i just hope more rap/hiphop in your new record. Please do that for your dawgs at least. Peace.

  81. rocksylvie on December 11, 2008 at 2:18 am

I’m not interested in Pro Tools but thanks to DigiDesign to give you the opportunity to let you test that stuff, allowing us to listen this wonderful track! But first of all THANK YOU! Good job!

  82. Lobby on December 11, 2008 at 2:17 am

This instrumental sounds wonderful. I wonder what lyrics can you guys make up for this track. I’m being kind of… Impatient right now, can’t wait…😀 When’s LPU 8 coming out? /Edit/ What, it’s out? :O Omg how could I have missed it.

Nice dark, “mysterious” track Mike, could it possibly be posted on mikeshinoda.com, as a downloadable file once the “Music” section gets put up?

  89. iamsatan on December 11, 2008 at 12:47 am

Really cool sample track, I really like the beat and guitar. I hope we get to hear some of the instrumentals you’ve been talking about some day. Keep it up.

  90. Carla on December 11, 2008 at 12:24 am

    Awesome. D:

I’m not really into recording software, but ProTools8 looks cool. The track is really great and makes me excited. Although it’s energetic, it does have a dark tone to it and actually I almost started tearing up. Somehow…it made me feel sad. (in a good way?) I dunno, it’s hard to describe. Either way, I’m loving the Christmas lights around Rob’s drumset haha. Thanks for sharing!

  91. Hybr1d_7h3ory on December 11, 2008 at 12:20 am

I have been looking into getting a ProTools rig, and I think 8 just might be the one. Really cool video by the way. I really like that track, it has a deep, dark, ominous feel to it.

It looks like you guys are enjoying the studio time, I really look forward to new album…Hybr1d_7h3ory

I don’t know much about recording software. I have heard of ProTools before, it looks like a very cool program. The track has a really nice melody to it. Thanks for sharing that with us.
