STYLES OF BEYOND and Machine Shop

January 15, 2009

FORT MINOR fans have asked me, “What’s up with Styles Of Beyond? Aren’t they signed to Machine Shop? When is their record coming out?” The answers are long and complex, but the short version is this:

S.O.B.’s record was supposed to come out years ago. Due to a variety of creative and non-creative decisions by S.O.B., Linkin Park, Machine Shop, and Warner Bros., we held back in order to work on the record and the release plans. After months of hard work by the group, we ended up finishing what we feel is a great record, entitled “Reseda Beach.”

Warner Bros., however, wasn’t as thrilled about the record as we were. They weren’t committed to spending a healthy budget on it; they intended to limit the hours and funds spent on its release. We felt that limiting the attention put on the record would basically cut its legs out from beneath it, and it would never get a chance. There was a lot of disagreement between everyone about this topic, but it essentially became a stalemate.

With that said, we’ve come to a few decisions. Firstly, due to ongoing differences between Warner Bros. and Machine Shop’s views on the creative and non-creative aspects of our albums, we will be putting Machine Shop Records on hiatus until another time. We’re not angry with WB. We had always hoped that MSR could be an artist-driven label with special attention on the best creative ideas and good music; until we see eye to eye with our partner, we can’t see how it could be a productive relationship. Machine Shop will still promote projects (like Linkin Park) with our marketing branch, but the artist development / record label part of the company are going to hibernate for a while. The market is too tough and the intentions and ideas of the two entities are too different for it to be a productive situation at this time.

Secondly, we worked out a number of other options for the Styles Of Beyond, and WB has generously agreed to let them explore options elsewhere. S.O.B. will likely be releasing the album independently. Look forward to more info about the record as it materializes, at My bandmates and I believe in the group, and wish TAK, Skully, Cheapshot, and RYU all our best. You’ll see more about S.O.B. here one this site as their project progresses.

And lastly, some great news: in the meantime, RYU of Styles Of Beyond has been working with some mutual friends (including Apathy and Scoop DeVille, among others) on a new project called The Get Busy Committee. They just finished a new song and video for a new song called “My Little Razor Blade.” Here’s the world-premiere of the video and song…enjoy!

Are WB and MSR losing money because of illegal downloading of music? Plz I need answer for research use please answer if anyone see this~~ Thank you=)

  2. JaySinkie on January 18, 2009 at 7:35 am

mikenLP_4ever: Scoop DeVille is a producer associated with FM/S.O.B/Demigodz, he produced “Respect 4 Grandma” and “Get It” off We Major, several tracks off Razor Tag, and Ryu’s track “The Most Shady”.

Everybody else: If you want to download an MP3 of “My Little Razor Blade”, we’ve got it up on for free download.

Hmm I have to say I really admire you for the way you present news even if they are bad news.I’m not going to rant on Warner or anything but I don’t really like them because of the decisions they’re making.SOB are really great guys with real talent and I believe them too.But honestly in my opinion Warner just screwed them over…maybe I’m not supposed to say it but…whatever. Anyways the song is great…I hope we hear more from The Get Busy Committee:)

  12. Lvix on January 17, 2009 at 3:46 am

    Finally… Now i know something more….
I think this is an example for the fact that the music business is a hard world.

  13. nillp on January 16, 2009 at 8:00 pm

“We’re not angry with WB.” yeah.. but i am.. seriously.. WB has been annoying me A LOT lately.. in so many ways.. ¬¬’

anyway. i believe in the group too.. those guys are really talented and deserve to ‘be free’ to do what they want with their album.. cannot wait to check out SOB’s new stuff..

about MSR.. pretty sad that “some parts” of it will be on hiatus for a while.. >_<‘ hope it back soon and that MSR can work in a productive way with WB.. πŸ˜‰

lots of kudos to “My Little Razor Blade”.. amazing. (:

    take care; see ya.

So.. Its like being the child of a very rich ceo? If you going to represent the company then he’s gonna tell you who to marry, what to wear, and how to act. (Whats in your best interest in his eyes)…if your not you will be cut off and on your own? Hmm interesting. Well if it counts for anything, I believe in them 100%. Ah, but don’t take my compliments lightly. I’m generally very critical. Creativity, style, quality, and that energy… You know I’ve noticed that one little sound or anything and that energy can fall off in and instant. Maybe like a very fragile balance between them all? The ones that pull this off, well, I have a tendency to stick around.

  15. ShadowerLiltani on January 16, 2009 at 12:54 pm

That’s a shame they were put through that after working so hard. I am getting the impression, and I am not trying to start a rumor people, that Warner doesn’t think SOB is marketable. I personally think they are, because logically, they are associated with LP, thus more fans will be interested in them, they have a more versatile sound, their lyrics are extremely up-beat and original, and they are a hip hop group. They fit into mainstream and stay true to themselves which for a record label ought to be godsend. Money seems to the concern, and it’s ridiculous. Maybe going Indie is better, but WB slapped them in the face.

  16. rockermeg on January 16, 2009 at 12:26 pm

Aaah well they couldn’t have better people supporting them right?
S.O.B are crazy talented, I wish them the best of luck and I can’t wait to hear some new stuff; Megadef is one of the best albums I own.
MSR was a great idea, things will work out…
‘My Little Razor Blade’ is GREAT! Love love it!!
Little controversial…don’t really like to think about drugs that way but it’s still powerful and an amazing job done by RYU in particular.
    Is it on itunes???

  17. NoMoreSorrowGirl on January 16, 2009 at 10:52 am

Thanks for the update Mike…Goodluck to the guys of Styles of Beyond…Take Care you guys!…Love ya’ll:))…and I forgot the video is awesome and the beat is fantastic love it!…:))

  18. Kalini on January 16, 2009 at 10:32 am

I’d like to know how they make decisions about each particular album. How could they forecast the number of the sales and how do they decide what amount of funds to disburse for its release? Is it a fast decision or a lot of people are involved in the decision making process? I think it couldn’t work in the case of a creative work. Each album deserves enough attention and the chance to become as popular as possible. The song is great! I could listen to it again and again!!! I wish good luck to S.O.B.! Probably they’ll make it better if they release the album independently. Thanks for the explanation, Mike! I hope M.S.R. won’t be on hiatus for a very long time! KK

  19. Curiosa on January 16, 2009 at 10:30 am

Thanks for sharing the video, Mike. It’s awesome!:) I’ve heard they have some pretty good songs. & why did Holly leave MSR/WBR?

Here’s another link for the video:

@tpbarbosa: how many artists were signed to MSR? I only know of 3 who are no longer there.

  20. tpbarbosa on January 16, 2009 at 10:09 am

“Reseda Beach” is a really nice name I wish WR could have liked it,so more of us would have the chance to listen to it.I think its one of the worst things to have a contract with a major label, if you do something you like and its not good enough for them then they will not give to it enough support Im glad SOB will still release their new album, even though independently, I hope everything goes well with them. This song you posted is truly a great song, very very nice!
Damn it, MSR was a great place to meet new artists… and also Mike, when will FM rise again?I mean do you have something in mind for the next album?Or it wont have a 2nd album?Cause “The Rising Tied” was truly a masterpiece

  21. mike_n_LP_4ever on January 16, 2009 at 9:45 am

Damn!! I heard the part where Ryu says, “-Sippin on the good stuff-” And I was like, OOOOH!! The song is raw! No lie. When I first heard Apathy, he sounds like a black man lol when I saw a pic of him I was like, “Oh shit he’s white!!!” lmao! And Im mad cuz, Scoop DeVille sounds soooo familiar, I just cant remember! Make my brain explode! But anyways, I already downloaded My Little Razor Blade; Jammin to that piece of music right now! Lol

  22. Zach on January 16, 2009 at 9:09 am

That’s a chill song. Thanks for posting that shit. But Mike, Warner is really fucking up LP and the fans are taking notice. I think you should upload like a b-side, demo or remix to the LPU just to be a rebel. πŸ˜€

  23. WookieBastard on January 16, 2009 at 9:09 am

wooooah, they sampled The Knife’s “Heartbeats” I love that song, and I love the twist they gave to it and how they made it their own.

Good stuff… can’t wait for Reseda Beach. Good thing SOB was able to leave Warner and the fact that you support them as much as you do is even better. May the force be with you and SOB.

  24. Gabry94LinkinParkfan23 on January 16, 2009 at 6:48 am

heyy Mike!!! ty 4 sharing the songs and the goos news XD i really liked the snìong, its very cool!!! take care, byee Gabry

  25. ms_shock on January 16, 2009 at 2:17 am

Hey Mike! Great news, thank you, but i wanted to ahow you this. I think you’ve seen it, but… it’s just AMAZING!

The short film by Andrea Martignoni: an ambiguous animation painted on public walls. Made in Buenos Aires and in Baden, called MUTO. omg i lost my words..:)

  26. CuteWhiteBunny on January 16, 2009 at 1:46 am

the song is awesome! thanks for the update on SOB.

  27. Shadow on January 16, 2009 at 12:56 am

-> Song: one word – fantastic!
-> SOB: I really hope to hear some new SOB soon, they are just great.
-> WB: yeah, its such a thing with those record labels…and as you say, the market is very though. Talent and ideas alone aren’t enough anymore, right?
-> Mike: thanks for the update πŸ™‚

  28. KATHYxx on January 15, 2009 at 11:43 pm

    that’s a real bummer. I think I recall asking 😦

I’ve been using Razor Tag to hold me over.

On the upside, I saw your mixtape, and it rules.

  29. Aditya_the_warrior_within on January 15, 2009 at 11:22 pm

    thanks for the info πŸ™‚

  30. lp_fm_fan on January 15, 2009 at 9:37 pm

Firstly, the song was amazing! I love it!

Secondly, I’m SO glad that S.O.B. might go independent! They have some great stuff, no doubt! And I hope y’all come to terms…WB and MSR. Best of luck!

  31. MrJQ23 on January 15, 2009 at 9:22 pm

thanks for the long awaited update mike. hopefully more news comes soon. take it easy.

  32. Hybr1d_7h3ory on January 15, 2009 at 8:46 pm

That song was dope, no pun intended. As “Reseda Beach”, I remember when it was suppose to be named “Rocket Surgery”. S.O.B really needs to get “mainstream” for the lack of a better word, I believe S.O.B could fry up those radio waves like spam in a frying pan. Some of the stuff you did with them and DEMIGODZ on the “We Major” like “Cover and Duck”, that song is sooo sick. Things can only look up for those guys, I just really hope this doesn’t cause any tension between S.O.B and MSR and LP, I can see a really suhweet collaboration in the future with those guys.
On another note Mike, is there anywhere I can find a print/copy of your “Rise Up” piece from “DHS&C”? My “Icon” needs a wall-mate

  33. lynndarwinharris on January 15, 2009 at 8:38 pm

It does not matter if SOB is independent or with a major label, they are a true talent, just like LP, FM and Apathy and no matter what I will buy the albums. I believe in all you guys, because your music has helped me believe in myself. For that I say thank you. I await any and all future record releases of Styles of Beyond, Linkin Park, Fort Minor and Apathy.

  34. Doggie24690 on January 15, 2009 at 8:02 pm

Holy shit, that was dope. I’mma have to take another listen for all of it to sink in but the beat, the flow, vocals;rhymes… good stuff. Congratulations S.O.B. It’s really good to hear that you will have a chance to release the album; independently or not. At least you can now be your own artists. Thank you for the update Mike.

  35. TiffTiff33LP on January 15, 2009 at 4:11 pm

Hey mike, quick question, when are you guys(LP) going to put the videos back on youtube? The song and vid r cool!^^

  36. lucky_cat on January 15, 2009 at 4:03 pm

Hey, that’s the Knife-version of “Heartbeats”, Yeah!! (altough I love Jose Gonzales) So cool, dope song !!
AND I’m really glad that all the info is out now πŸ˜‰ Keep going!

  37. spraypaintNinkpens on January 15, 2009 at 3:25 pm

Solution: Make another fort minor cd on a different label. Come on mike, the rap community needs you back.

  38. keineAhnung on January 15, 2009 at 3:22 pm

yeah, read about them leaving msr on sobcentral some time ago…that’s so sad! but at least the album will be out soon…and of course I do hope that “going independent” doesn’t mean “u.s. only” release 😦

hm, my little razor blade definitely sounds familiar

  39. Raiden on January 15, 2009 at 3:17 pm

Hopefully WBR will change some rules at their house. (YouTube, and things like that) It was good to hear about S.O.B. Can’t wait the album and Julien-K album too, but firstly the new LP album :). By the way Mike! What about the “In the Studio” topic? Something new information about the new album or a pic? :). Best wishes for your work. Peter from Hungary.

  40. analoggirl on January 15, 2009 at 3:08 pm

Talk about transparency! Thanks for shedding light on MSR and SOB, Mike. I had the impression that the release hinged on a sample clearance; now I understand that marketing – or shall I say marketability – is what jeopardized the release. With your knowledge of the industry and the growing middle class of artists, I’m sure that your imprint will eventually find its voice.

I wish SOB all the best as they move forward. I enjoyed “My Little Razor Blade” and I’m looking forward to hearing more from The Get Busy Committee. Ap never fails to impress and Ryu’s lyrics were a nice contrast to your tact and diplomacy. HA! The video was crazy, too. Gritty but artsy.

  41. ColorScheming on January 15, 2009 at 2:59 pm

I am so glad they might go independent. I talked to tak about it he said that it looked like the new album was never coming out. I think it is so much better this way. The label was killing some of the fans with false promises of when the album was coming out and it never came out.

It seems that independent/underground in my opinion at least is alive more than mainstream “hip hop” if you like to call it that. I will always support s.o.b and be at every show they have here. So happy to hear that there are other options for them right now.

I am sorry to hear what is going on with w.b. But i personally think its better this route.Because s.o.b will have more control.

  42. durg on January 15, 2009 at 2:36 pm

when you were on the radio once i called in & was on hold & was gonna ask you about FM πŸ˜€ haha :p never got the chance to though, but glad to see a post about it πŸ˜€

  43. Fox on January 15, 2009 at 2:23 pm

This has caused me to lose a lot of faith in WBR. It’s completely understandable to not agree with an artist on creative aspects of a project, but to underfund and cut studio time because of it? That’s unacceptable. I wish you all the best and hope you can put MSR back on the front burner.

  44. Lynnie on January 15, 2009 at 2:19 pm

    Jesus on a leash, dude!
That Perhapsy post keeps singing automatically when I come on here. Scares me shitless, it does!
Isn’t it just a pain in the arse when something you want so bad and work so hard for doesn’t happen?
But at least you’re behaving like adults, which is a good thing – a mature head always gets the result it wants.
As for ‘My Little Razor Blade’… nah, not my thing, dude!
I had to stop it half way through cause it was just noise, to me.
Wishing luck to S.O.B. and hoping MSR gets back up and running sooner rather than later.
    Have a good day.

  45. cuz on January 15, 2009 at 2:00 pm

Thanks for clearing things up. Nice to hear guys on the new song. Hope S.O.B. will make it with the way they want. All the best for them. And hopefully MSR and WB will find a way for a creative work. Can’t wait to hear new S.O.B. music!

  46. A_Warm_Place on January 15, 2009 at 1:59 pm

This is disappointing , but I’m not surprised. It’s like the saying goes – if you want loyalty , get a dog.

  47. Anne on January 15, 2009 at 1:21 pm

I recognized that sound from the first beat and first thought: old, well known song for some new unknown lyrics. But I must admit: fantastic song with great vocals!
Give us some mor if you can, Mike πŸ™‚
