Urban Ninja

January 21, 2009

Note From Mike: Yesterday was a busy day! I was going to post a clip of the inauguration, but since it’s available everywhere else, I decided not to post. Also, Happy Birthday to Mr. Rob Bourdon–we had a nice dinner last night to celebrate. On a random note, congratulations to Shepard Fairey — his famous Obama piece has been inducted into the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian. Pretty amazing, considering the guerilla art /graffiti nature of his past campaigns!

Now, on to Secret Asian Man’s post.

Some people call it Free Running or Parkour, but this guy is apparently the Urban Ninja. Incredible skills, terrible mini ponytail. Still no word on why he suddenly starts fighting a Muay Thai kickboxer whilst on a roof top.

Craziest thing is Jackie Chan can probably still do most of these tricks and he’s in his mid 50’s. My knees hurt when I get up from the couch. I’m old.

Why exatly does he keep getting decked, periodically? Anyway, awesome vid, I wanna do that stuff. And mike, your not old, you just gotta train like he did to jump off walls and walks the balence beam in a mall, which is probably a good 30 feet drop. And I do Softball, karate and hiking, how do you think I feel when I get out of bed 😦 and yes, I could possibly do SOME moves.. I’M NOT TEMPTING ANYONE O.O

hey.. i just came across this post. i know who that “urban ninja” is. his name is Xin and now he does a lot of stunt work for movies and tv shows. he’s my friend’s (ex gf’s) cousin. a lot if not all those places in the video are located in the OC. everywhere from Goldenwest College to the Westminster mall and Main Place mall. he’s pretty good at what he does.. if you want to see more of him, check out http://www.originalxin.com – if you want to see more of the sport, check out http://www.teamryouko.com they are a canadian based team and they’ve gotten a lot of love for being great at doing the same thing. they’re more exhibitionists but they also do some stunt work from my understanding.

  4. linkingal007 on February 11, 2009 at 9:53 pm

Parkour is an amazing ‘sport’ but it isn’t recognised by the society as sport, sad to say.

  5. Deseo_Sangre on January 28, 2009 at 10:42 am

The song used in the Video is Give It All by Rise Against. It’s a damn great song! I really like it.

  6. ArielCahen on January 27, 2009 at 7:29 am

this obama piece is amazing. just not as amazing as jackie chan!

  7. Sandygirl on January 26, 2009 at 7:32 pm

ok, mike for starters, YOU AREN’T OLD!!! lots of people are putting that on your comment board, so….try not to say that again 😦 and I thought that the video was funny, and the pic was kinda cool. and btw, your knees wont hurt so much if you run in the morning! im in 7tth grade, and am in better shape than most of the kids at my school πŸ™‚ and you should look at my brothers bands site, its chase56.com the band name is chase 56 and if you look at the pics then the guy who is in almost all of them is my older bro. And his band would be a GREAT CHOICE for a upcoming tour that LP has planned. And if you wanna talk to him, just email me at k9kidsandy@aol.com and ill set it up πŸ™‚

  8. asiatik16 on January 26, 2009 at 1:15 pm

Great picture! I like Mr. Obama. He’s a decent man. πŸ™‚ Parkour is cool! But not everyone can do that…

  12. mike_n_LP_4ever on January 24, 2009 at 1:02 pm

First of all, who ever said they’re old, you’re not. πŸ™‚ Now: I’ve seen that picture of Obama before! Lol Whenever I go to like, 7-Eleven, and pass by all the magazines, I see it there sometimes. And with this guy running……crazy as hell! It reminds of that one show Im always watching on G4 – Ninja Warrior. A load of Japanese guys (and sometimes girls) just doing some crazy ass stunts, and if they mess up they lose. πŸ˜›

PS – The chat with Chester on LPU, was great!

Jackie Chan is the best and he never had a stunt man while filming that’s the best part of being a Jackie Chan…I feel like I was watching the movie Yamakasi with all those crazy moves, jumping on a, like ten-story building ha!crazy!…Hope you have a nice dinner with Rob…I’m confused if whose knees hurts Mike or Secret Asian Man!?…hahaha!you guys need a whole lot of exercise not setting on your computer blogging 24/7…hahaha!…and @ AQUA 101, I saw that movie it’s amazing and I didn’t know that their is part 2…and if i’m not mistaken his the same guy on the movie Toom yum gong!?sounds like that!

  21. Curiosa on January 22, 2009 at 1:53 pm

I hope Rob had a great b-day. πŸ™‚ Mike, some of the girls on fmmb & I were wondering, is Rob still single cause he’s hot! Anyway just wondering. πŸ™‚

Parkour: I wonder if he’s been on a gymnastics team before cause he’d be great for the floor routine.

@Eddie: I saw a program on Ninjutsu on the History Channel & was very impressed. I just love martial arts but unfortunately I don’t know how do any of them. :)~ lol

  22. sasummsumm on January 22, 2009 at 12:30 pm

yeah there’s a video game of that parcours thing out…my brother played the game… and i got a tshirt from the games convention XD which i wear just at this moment -.-. think that was funny right now… XD that has to mean something…maybe a telepathic connection to a “secret asian man” XD…jk but real strange oO

the video is awesome, there are a lot more like them on youtube… i hope these ppl doing parcours will not ruin their knees with this sport πŸ˜‰ i think a lot can go wrong if you don’t have the right training ouch Β°.-

  23. Madlen on January 22, 2009 at 11:38 am

Great artwork…I haven’t actually seen a video of the inauguration yet but since everyone is talking about I will:)Some of my friends are doing this Parcour stuff too and sometimes I’m just scared for them:D

i’ve been watching a lot of obama’s stuff – including his speech that left me without words – on tv lately and dude, he’s really an amazing guy.. i loved everything he did to honor Martin Luther King.. and this is a nice pice of him; i’ve seen this a lot lately.. congrats to shepard fairey..! // nice to know that you guys had a good time together. (:

this video was great.. it’s really incredible what these guys can do! Jackie Chan is amazing. kudos to him.

“My knees hurt when I get up from the couch. I’m old.” i laughed so bad on this one.. my back hurts sometimes when i get up.. i prefer to face this like “if it hurts now, it’s ’cause it was well used”.. ha!

    anyway; mk’nil :*

  30. Blaesbjerg on January 22, 2009 at 8:26 am

really great piece of Obama πŸ™‚

  33. Eddie on January 22, 2009 at 6:24 am

Hey Mike what’s up? Very nice Obama artwork! And the Free Runing video, AWESOME!!! The guys are ninjas!! In 2003-2004 (I was 14) I did a Japanese martial art called Ninjutsu and we did in every training ukemi(s). I remember one time my trainer put 5 guys in the floor and said “do ukemi above them”. I freaked out cause it was dangerous but I did it and the feeling was awesome. The guys in free runing must feel perfect. And Mikey YOUR NOT OLD!!!!

  34. Lobby on January 22, 2009 at 6:13 am

Jackie Chan is an animal… Happy birthday to Rob! Obama ftw! Let’s hope he’ll do the change he promised, and oh I do parkour and I love it.. BTW there is a parkour video game out now, it’s called “Mirror’s Edge”

i thought that was cute to have a nice dinner for rob’s birthday. it shows the awesome love that’s in the band πŸ™‚ that clip is pretty crazy. mr. secret asian man, i bet you’re not that old. you probably look 20 years younger than your real age πŸ™‚

  37. Ash75 on January 22, 2009 at 5:50 am

oh, come on Mike, your not so old ;]
Wow, Mokney Man.. I wish I could jump like him! ( but, hm, you know if I try these, I’ll probably kill myself after the first jump, so maybe I’ll just keep being lazy xD joke) Oh, and Jackie Chan RLZ! He’s awesome, like Urban Ninja πŸ™‚
And if you are interested in parcour: here’s my friend ( and his friends) ; he also does this:

Maybe he’s not as good as Urban Ninja or Jackie Chan, but you know, he’s only 14 (but he’s still training! ^^)

  38. Shinodabestfriend on January 22, 2009 at 5:48 am

I love that Obama picture, its beautiful & he indeed looks handsome. Congrat to our new president, we hope hes doing all the best for Americans and the world as well. Moving to AsianSecretMan…ooohhh dear, r u old outside & young inside? or via versa? he-he-he…and if u like kicking, jumping, running or something like Muay Thai Fight, u probably should watch this clip from the best Thai Kick Boxing movie called “Ong-Bak”, here is a short clip from Ong-Bak 1: http://hk.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxnhlTxRdJU. And a new movie Ong-Bak 2 (just played last week in my place) : http://hk.youtube.com/watch?v=DLEneaH_XpY#. Tony Jaa is considered to be the best martial actor after Bruce Lee. Enjoy!

  43. KATHYxx on January 22, 2009 at 1:52 am

Hey Mike, have you checked out that Mall Cop movie out in the theaters. I saw some skills in there and I was like “Wow, parkour’s getting some recognition finally.” Also, it didn’t turn out to be a bad movie, I expected it to be cheesy but I found it to be very funny.

Barack Obama also gives hope to lego people

  44. msgirl on January 22, 2009 at 12:26 am

happy birthday Rob,eventhough it passed!hhmm….u know that the numbers of people gathered in his inauguration are almost the same size as my country’s population?….hehe…it may seem funny, but true….i hope he will wind up the economic depression of the world!my country is in really bad situation right now…we all get inflation….almost 70 percent of the population is below the poverty line….the reason :average salary is 150$ per month for per capita..so many unemployed people..but the price of the things are almost the same as america’s.price of the fuel is higher than america’s..i believe that obama will change not only america but also all countries..:)

Thank you for contributing something to Rob. I seriously thought you forgot considering you posted something on Brad’s birthday and not his.. i was like MIKE !! But then you posted something so nevermind !! ^_^ UGH !! My knees hurt ALL the time !! Especially in gym class -.-‘ They’re genetic so i can’t do anything unless i get surgery. (NOT going to happen) We have to sit in midair for like FIVE minutes without moving . You try doing that !!! It’s hard 😦 Then when i stood up, my knees started popping nd they hurt REALLY bad. Then we had to run 10 laps -.-‘ . Try sitting in midair for 5 minutes with your hands in the air without moving . (It cant be done -.-‘) —Brooke πŸ™‚

I love the art work on Obama that was done by Shepard Fairey. I wondered who had done that. And thanks Secret Asian Man for the post, my knees just hurt looking at it! Have a good afternoon!

  50. motsy on January 21, 2009 at 5:00 pm

thanks for not posting a clip of the inauguration. i enjoyed watching the first thousand or so clips i saw. some network news show did a story on shepard soon after the election. wonder how he feels going from being thrown in jail for his work to being immortalized at the smithsonian. loved his stuff even before the obama poster.

  51. DRUMMERDALZIEL on January 21, 2009 at 4:21 pm

Happy Birthday to Rob, must be cool for him sharing his birthday with the date of the inauguration. And nice Rise Against track in the background to the video, my band has a song with a similar sounding guitar in the intro.

Part of me wishes i could do parkour, but to be honest, im too damn lazy and out of shape!

  52. keineAhnung on January 21, 2009 at 3:40 pm

wow, that guy’s amazing!!! wish I could do such stuff too 😦

btw, if that makes you feel better: my knees (and back) hurt too when I get up and I’m probably younger than you are…so don’t worry, you’re not the only one with that problem ;p

  53. soyuneik on January 21, 2009 at 3:27 pm

Ah, I’ve seen both of these. No matter…
The last time I walked around the city I experienced what seemed to be a hostile ninja takeover. Random men jumping , falling, flipping and flying …Needless-to-say, I was ecstatic. With the exception of men in mechs and giant robots, all my dreams are coming true.

  54. victoria on January 21, 2009 at 3:24 pm

    happy b-day bourdy, late, but…xD.
My brother loves parkour…I think is a little dangerous, isn’t it?, anyway amazing vid..
    kises from spain rob πŸ˜‰
sorry for my bad english T__T

  55. lucky_cat on January 21, 2009 at 3:21 pm

Now that I have read what the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian is, I can just say: WOW !!! But it absolutely deserves it because it is so strongly associated with the Obama campaign. Obama is in the White House and Shepard Fairey in the NPG – signs of change!
Awesome vid, I love Parkour … not only that those guys overcome their physical limits at he same time they overcome the limits of the urban space. It’s as if it gets a completely new significance …

  56. pepper on January 21, 2009 at 2:54 pm

Yeah, I’ve seen that vid before, I actually participate in parkour myself =) basically its like the art of running away, always being able to find and successfully execute a fast escape. It’s sick XD

  57. Sintia on January 21, 2009 at 2:49 pm

I love the Obama Hope poster by Shepard Fairey. When the campaign first started that was the picture that caught my eye and always wondered who did it. I’m glad you posted the pic and the link to Shepard Fairey. He has really good art! Thanks for posting & hope you had a good time 2 dinner. HAPPY B-LATED BDAY MR. ROB!! πŸ˜€

  63. PaintedDreams on January 21, 2009 at 1:57 pm

i am an art education major in college and we actually had a very interesting discussion about that poster today in my art history class. i just thought it was funny that i see that picture right after the discussion we had. i also think it is funny that you have a link to the urban ninja.. he is one of my favorites. =] i find him very inspiring actually because he had a dream since he was young, and he has never deterred from trying to reach his goal. he also has a myspace.. he was on american gladiator as one of the gladiators.. and he was also in the weezer pork and beans music video for about half a second. haha. as far as i know he actually was in a contest that jackie chan held. =]

  64. analoggirl on January 21, 2009 at 1:53 pm

I love Shepard Fairey and his Hope poster. Some even argue that it was the tipping point for the campaign (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ben-arnon/how-the-obama-hope-posterb133874.html). However, can Obey Giant continue to be subversive if the art is recognized by the Smithsonian? Is there still a need to fight “the man” if that man is Obama? Can you manufacture dissent if you’ve become an institution? Hmmm…

Lastly, I loved the video and the set-up.

  65. cuz on January 21, 2009 at 1:53 pm

Again, Happy Birthday to Rob! Hope you all had a great time celebrting. Even with Obama’s inauguration, that’s still most important thing of yesterday πŸ™‚

Interested in what Obama will do. And the ninja guy was cool. I’d love to have such skills.

  66. Emiily on January 21, 2009 at 1:48 pm

Seemingly, Mr.Ninja met Jackie Chan when he was younger and asked if he could be part of his team.
Jackie either ignored or bluntly replied but went back and told him that he could, if he became good enough when he was older.
At least thats what I remember from watching that video a few months back πŸ™‚

Happy Birthday Rob :} Hope you enjoyed it!

  67. Anstice on January 21, 2009 at 1:19 pm

Happy Birthday, Rob~ How’s life as a 30 year old?? You’re OLD. Damn.

@YourConscience: Clarey, I told you that Mike was out celebrating with Rob, but do you ever listen to Jadie?? Nooo. PFFT.

I didn’t actually get to see the Inaugural Address yesterday because I was in volleyball at the time, but I saw the Inaugural Parade in my Humanities class. I’m hoping for big things in the future, but we’ll all see how things turn out =).

  68. nataku on January 21, 2009 at 1:11 pm

“My knees hurt when I get up from the couch. I’m old.” i’m sorry but this made me laugh. BIG laugh πŸ˜› zomg

  69. Chemist999 on January 21, 2009 at 1:10 pm

Hm… can’t still figure out that painting. There’s something so odd, it actually reminds of like 50 years old commie propaganda poster in a strange sort of way. Maybe because it looks like one. But it’s surely attention-grabbing piece.

  70. spraypaintNinkpens on January 21, 2009 at 1:06 pm

Throw on your dc paraphernalia and bring fort minor back. That’ll make you seem younger.

  71. YourConscience on January 21, 2009 at 12:48 pm

HAPPY [belated] BIRTHDAY, ROB! =D I actually logged on to reap you for not mentioning him yesterday, but I’m glad to hear it’s because you guys were out celebrating. Hmmm… Maybe THAT’s why he never showed up to have a slice of that Strawberry Shortcake that I made. Oh well, I shared a little slice with Bourdon, so it still counts in my mind. Haha.

I, uhm, won’t comment about the speech Obama gave yesterday, but nice video, Secret Asian Man. Old stuff, but still cool to see again. Hope the album is going well. Take care.

Oh, and, P.S. Any word on Glorious Excess (Dies)…?

Happy Belated B-day to Rob! WOOO for Obama and congrats to Shepard Fairey! I was pretty shocked and happy as well when I found out it was going to the Smithsonian. As for the Urban Ninja video, I’ve seen it so many times and it never fails to amaze me. (lol @ roof fight comment)

I’m not big on the American politics (not even that big on the UK politics) so I’m going to avoid comment, apart from to say that image is cool.

    I can’t believe Rob’s birthday passed and I didn’t do the fan-ish thing of wishing him a good’un.
    Just for Rob:

That vid is cool I love when people randomly show off their talents. Think I might try and ‘hire’ him, just for shits and giggles. Free Running looks so cool – wish I could do it… but I’m fat and unfit. Lol.
Have a good day, Mike (who didn’t actually post!) and S.A.M.

  87. Kalini on January 21, 2009 at 11:10 am

Obama’s piece is great! I also think that the people have too high expectations for Obama. They expect miracles, which is actually not good for Mr Obama. Mike, the people from the city Obama in Japan were celebrating yesterday, too. The video is amazing! It’s so difficult and Jacky Chan can really do most of these tricks at his age! How old is the Secret Asian Man? Krassie

Happy belated b-day to Rob :D, I loved that piece of art, I’m hoping so much from Obama.
Mike, I really need your help, I was up to record some demos, and I need to know, do I record musics of just one style (my favorite one) or of all the styles I’m up to?(I’m mean to not turn it into something boring). And in another note, I write my own music, and I was really needing review on it, can you direct me to someone or some sites that can give me great advices? Or maybe if they’re good enough there’s a way to show it to some artists, before I record them on my own?
    I really need your answer.

Happy late birthday to Rob ^-^
And i agree to liopeΒ΄s post concerning Obama.
Umm hereΒ΄s a video i think youΒ΄re going to love… ItΒ΄s an indian version of Michael JacksonΒ΄s Thriller with english subtitles. Let me tell you: ItΒ΄s hilarious xD

    Greetings from germany

About the Obama poster it is a really nice piece! Since thought you brought the Obama theme to the table i want to say that i’m actually annoyed by people’s excitement!! Because Obama is the only president that has done NOTHING yet but he is the most famous of all!! There is an adage that says “whenever you hear about lots of cherries hold a small bucket”. I understand that people had enough with Bush but it would be better if they just wait a little bit to see what Obama has to give them..i hope you agree with me πŸ™‚

  91. NeneLP88 on January 21, 2009 at 10:36 am

I read the post before you uploaded Shepard Fairey’s work and I was really thinking “uh, that Obama piece would fit this post”, I could swear I thought it! You are way too predictable, man. hehe

For what concerns the video.. Oh God. That guy looks like a toy! I would have died falling down while walking on the roof in the first 5 secs of the video! :O

So, Secret Asian Man is old. And he’s not a Ninja. XD mumble mumble

  92. YuN_RoCks on January 21, 2009 at 10:34 am

” Incredible skills, terrible mini ponytail. ” haha you rule! XD PS. I’m am so excited for Obama and I can’t wait to see some changes, but poor him, he got lots of things to do.

  93. lpsweet24 on January 21, 2009 at 10:30 am

  95. In_Perpetuum on January 21, 2009 at 10:13 am

    First ^^

Well, seems like U’r old, but never mind. I don’t think any fan will mind a grey-haired Shinoda. And think about Metallica or Led Zeppelin, they are older =D
