Fires in Australia

February 13, 2009

image

This past weekend Australia’s deadliest bushfires began in Victoria and as of tonight 21 fires are still burning just about 25 miles outside of Melbourne. 181 people have died and that figure may rise to 200 or 300 as more bodies are uncovered and as the fires continue to burn. The fires are responsible for destroying 1,033 homes and leaving approx. 5,000 people homeless.

Music for Relief is responding to the deadly bushfires with the following measures:

Accepting donations for victims of the bushfires via http://www.musicforrelief.org (we will be supporting the Red Cross Victorian Brushfires Appeals Fund)

Reaching out to our artist and music industry partners to support and appeal for funds for this disaster.

Contributing the proceeds of our upcoming online eBay auction of the Street Fighter IV video game cabinets to this effort. The auction will run from February 24th through March 5th at http://www.eBay.com/musicforrelief

Asking our music industry and artist partners for additional items they can donate for this auction.

Please visit http://www.musicforrelief.org to find ways to get involved, and remember to visit all your favorite bands’ message boards and encourage the artists and fans to join MFR.

    Hey Mike,
Thanks for helping make people around the world aware of the fires in Victoria. To give you all a better idea of what Aussies are going through at the moment, North Queenslanders were experiencing flooding on a massive scale at the same time as the fires. Some towns are still cut off (now a month) and are expected to be cut off for up to another 8 weeks. To top it off, the waters are croc infested! Believe it or not though, those affected by the floods were donating funds given to them back to the bushfire appeal. So glad MFR is behind the fundraising (tried to find somewhere on the site to suggest it.) To the wankers below, right back at ya!

Hey Mike, it’s so good that you posted this on your blog. I didn’t know about these fires in Australia and I wanna help! I’ve done almost everything that MFR asked people to do on their website. I just need to save some money to donate…

You guys can count on me always, even I can’t do as much as I wanted to help.

  20. AussiePrincess on February 15, 2009 at 5:00 pm

I live near Canberra (Australia), which was affected by bushfires in 2003. Canberra is a far way from Melbourne, about 700 kilometres. I found the support towards Victoria from Canberra’s community was really overwhelming. In the space of 10 hours, over 14 shipping containers were filled full of clothes and toys and basically anything that could be donated. My school raised just over $10,000, and although it may seem like a lot for a school, its really not enough. That is why I would like to thank everyone internationally who has given Victorians so much support. All Australian’s everywhere really appreciate it.🙂

  21. soyuneik on February 15, 2009 at 8:42 am

I really like that Socialvibe site. HINT HINT Its clean, user friendly, and it allows my broke ass to help people.
I’d love me some Street Fighter cabinets, best I can do right now is send my boy that way. The tournaments are held his house, so ya know…

  22. amarpoonian on February 15, 2009 at 12:41 am

i heard that some guys started the fire if its true then thats just horrible

  23. bennaboo9 on February 14, 2009 at 8:09 pm

over 1 million wildlife have died😦 so sad..victorai is getting so much support from everywhere its awesome

  24. NoMoreSorrowGirl on February 14, 2009 at 3:05 pm

I saw it on the news. I felt bad and sorry to those who lost their lives. Thanks for the Music for Relief for continuing support all around the world. You’re so kind guys!…hope more artist would help you guys!…@ ANTJE I saw that pic on newspaper poor Koalas they doesn’t deserve it😥

  25. Madlen on February 14, 2009 at 1:49 pm

It’s really nice to know that there are people like you out there ready to help-you really are doing something great and important.I’ll probably donate later and I really pray for the families that lost a loving one…

  26. Princess_MuzikChik on February 14, 2009 at 4:57 am

    Yeah its a tragedy =[
And what makes it worse is it was not a natural disaster, it was arson!
I hope they catch the fuckers and charged with manslaughter!
We’ll set them on fire for each and every life that was lost and see how they like!
It just makes me so angry!

I was shocked when i first read it in the paper and 91 were dead. To have the number go up so dramatically and continue to rise is devastating!
My heart goes out to everyone affected by the fires.

Guys, koalas are cute and everything, but you should be more worried about the people.

  27. Kalini on February 14, 2009 at 2:43 am

Yes, they need help. It’s a tragedy that happened there in Australia. KK

  28. shinnizel15 on February 13, 2009 at 11:23 pm

My heart goes out to the affected people. It’s really great that MFR is supporting these people. I’ve made a donatin to the Red Cross and promise to do something more … the Koalas are really cute and I should do something for them !!

  29. Ezza on February 13, 2009 at 10:20 pm

we have helicopters and the skycrains bombing the crap out and more than one truck on the ground and there are massive bulldozers creating fire breaks… if anything im hoping that truck was getting the flock out of there… im just thankful that our firefighters have managed to contain the fire around where i live. speaking of cute koalas someone saved an orphaned baby one and now someone in town is taking care of it.
even tho im not affected by any of the fires burning (except when the smoke from one decides to blow in) the way that ppl around the world want to help was a shock but a welcome one :’)

  30. Jhuryn on February 13, 2009 at 7:09 pm

My heart goes out to everyone effected by the fires! I made a donation to the Red Cross. Anything to help the Koalas!

  31. ThePrincess on February 13, 2009 at 5:23 pm

This is very sad how this can happen ??? .. look that poor cute koala below .. oh I think I will be participating with this … see what can I do after reading this post … i’m gonna make a call right now !! … thank you for information.. oh God i still can’t believe this….

  32. ShadowerLiltani on February 13, 2009 at 4:47 pm

I really don’t think that one firetruck is gonna be able to put that out. Don’t they have those helicopters that drop the water? Or hell, get some bulldozers to go ahead of where they thick the fire will travel and create a dirt line so it cant go any further (as long as there is no wind). Oh, and that looting shit needs to stop. People and wildlife are being hurt by some jackass, and all these looters can think about is stealing some TV. That’s just great. Assholes. I’m mentioning this stuff because I’m assuming it’ll carry somewhere.

  33. Philly_Willy on February 13, 2009 at 2:54 pm

Apparently the some of the fires were started deliberately, estimated over 1,000,000 animals died in the fires also. The other night there was a telethon that raised something like $20,000,000 bringing the total up to about $80,000,000 raised, it doesn’t really help though that some people are looting.

  34. lucky_cat on February 13, 2009 at 1:55 pm

As sad as it is, I was expecting this post. It’s great that you can help with MFR! I’ll check it out to see what I can do.
@Antje: I saw this too, so sad!

  35. antje on February 13, 2009 at 12:45 pm

This is so horrible. It’s a great thing you do with http://www.musicforrelief.org !!!!

But not just humans who are emerging from the ashes after amazing feats of survival in the Victoria fires.

omg, i hadn’t heard of that :O i wish i could help, but from brazil is kindda hard to get involved with MFR:/ i’m gonna check out the website and see if there’s anything i can do.. maybe i’ll talk to one of my favourite bands here, next time i see them, and see if they woldn’t be interested on the project!
they’re your fans, so, probably they will!😀
speaking of that, they just did a cover of ‘in the end’.. check this out, mike, you may not come to play here anymore, but we’re still hearing your songs live😛

  37. cuz on February 13, 2009 at 11:30 am

I heard about that I think few days ago on TV and thought that MFR will help in that case. And yes, you’re doing another good job. It’s so sad especially that it’s not the first time I remember Australia is getting burned. I hope the fires stop right now. Good luck and stay safe.

  39. LPROCKS on February 13, 2009 at 10:27 am

MFR is a good thing Ive donated a few times in the past, but I have to say I fell a little bad for Mike, he is advertising a way for those who want to help no doubt feeling good about it and some of us are still asking him to help other causes as well I think theres nothing wrong with that but dont get angry if he doesnt all causes are important some more than others the responsibility to help those causes is ours to look were to donate or how to physically help if you dont find it here in Mikes blog search the internet Im sure youll find what you are looking for. Dont stop here go on and act on it… Just my opinion, not meant to cause any battles…

  40. MARIALENAKI on February 13, 2009 at 10:20 am

yeah i heard that the person who started the fires got charged and he is also charged for possession child pornography, what a sicko. If convicted he could face up to a maximum of 25 years of jail time or something, his name is not being released because of his own “safety.”

Sabe, é um orgulho ser fã de pessoas envolvidas com o mundo! é uma honra acompanhar seus trabalhos nas artes. Obrigada por ser esse positivo exemplo.

At my school, I have a yearbook class that Im in; Which means I have to help put quotes, take pictures, put advertisements, design the cover and everything else to a yearbook. 58. MusicalMorphine on February 13, 2009 at 2:06 am

The devastation is just incredible. Apparently they have arrested one of the arsonists but there are so many fires still blazing. I can’t imagine looking out of my window and seeing that. The coming together of everyone round the world is amazing though.

  59. Kat_LP4eva on February 13, 2009 at 1:42 am

I live in Melbourne! Thankfully in the city, not close to the bushfires, but one of my teachers from school had parents living in the bush & he went to help them try to save their house last weekend. they failed, but at least they still have each other! My school raised about $8000 to help the families in that area.
Its horrible all the stories you hear! It’s all over the TV radio and news at the moment, almost all you here is about the bushfires and requests for donations.
Its scary to think that ive been to some of those places that have burnt down, and now theyre just not there anymore.
Im sure MFR will do all it can to help. Thanks very much Mike, from everyone in Victoria!

  65. liope on February 13, 2009 at 12:24 am

The fires in Australia brings back in memory the fires we had in Greece 2 years ago.. It is so sad knowing that when you go to bed there are other people dieing or that will fight with fire all night long..hoping that this will stop but you wake up and learn that more people died during the night and more fires are burning!! Unfortunately i can donate but i will spred the word to people that can help!! Let’s hope and pray that Astralia will be victorious from this fight!

  66. ZOETHENiNJA on February 13, 2009 at 12:15 am

Hey mike i am soo sad about the bushfires ( thankfully i live in sydney) but also overwhelmed about the music for relief and the contributions you, linkin park and all the other bands that are a part of this, thank you soo much for your care and concern! may you be rewarded for this one way or another!

  67. SprayPaint_InkPens on February 12, 2009 at 11:44 pm

G’day, I live in Australia, Sydney to be more accurate and these deadly bushfires are horrible. Australia has become 1 as we fight the bushfires, and help and support the victims, family’s, and those that have lost everything, even love ones. Imagine losing everything you had. Imagine losing your family or even friends. Imagine your home, school, college and uni burnt down. Imagine having to start life again with nothing. Imagine suddenly that tomorrow you will have nothing! This is what us Aussies are going through. This is where we all need to help those Aussies that are in need. We all need to be supporting and helpful by donating!
    ThankYou ms for the acknowledgement!

Mike, once again you’re are stepping up and giving an example of how any of us should react and feel when bad things happen to some of our brothers. All of the LP band members should be proud of MFR and yourselves for doing such a great job raising awareness and providing help right on the spot. You guys are showing every other publicly known person how they should be acting and behaving in these kind of situations and I hope many of them will accept it. We would live in a much better world!!!

Just keep on going man! We support you 100%!

It’s disheartening to see this on the news, especially when you’re unable to contact your friends who may be in the region. Much respect to MFR for its disaster relief efforts around the world. Also, much respect to you for raising the level of awareness with your blog.

I had no idea!!! But Mike I do love seeing how much you care about other people and how involved you guys really are with MFR. Thanks for getting this news out, its so easy in todays world to get caught up in our own petty problems and forget there are people out there who really need help… its good to be reminded that life isnt merely about us. I’ll be sure to help this cause in any way I can.
