March 8, 2009

New U2 artwork. And some other stuff.

By the way, I love U2.

  1. tazizzle on May 19, 2009 at 8:09 am

    i know u love U2.

  2. Sophia on March 21, 2009 at 10:21 pm

if u dont say that is U2’s new album, ill thought that is LP another EP, lol

    but i luv both πŸ˜€

  3. max_payn on March 21, 2009 at 1:54 am

Ah… I really have to say, Shadow of the day reminds me of ‘With or Without You’…

I sometimes mix two songs unconsciously…

But, you know, Artists impress each other πŸ™‚ So I think You and U2 are both cool.
    And happy birthday to Chester.

  4. _AdRiFt_ on March 17, 2009 at 7:09 am

Ah, yes, U2 is the shit. And it’s kind of ironic for me to be a huge, and I mean HUGE U2 fan ((I have U2 tattoos for God sakes. lol.)) and a big LP fan. You both have songs called One Step Closer and now the album work is similar. Best two bands in the world. M2M and NLOTH are the most wonderful two albums I have heard in a long while. πŸ™‚ Nice blog. Sorry I was late on it. Take care.

  5. jamblyn on March 16, 2009 at 9:33 am

Hmm…black and white, desolate location, rock band – sounds like the cover to, I don’t know…Joshua Tree. Granted the grouping is similar but how many different ways are there to stand about? Let’s not read too much into this. U2 has shown a partiality for using B&W group photos for their album art in the past, see ATYCLB and HTDAAB.

  6. shu on March 15, 2009 at 4:39 pm

wow all look alike thats really cool

  7. Tubabu on March 13, 2009 at 10:55 am

Ahaha there is a little imitation between MTM’s cover and the cover of No Line In The Horizon. But the more important is the songs into the record no ? Maybe the cover of MTM had inspired U2 ? It’s a good point for you and LP.
But I read somewhere that the cover of the new record of U2 was a copy of an other band… This band were the same cover. It’s bad for U2.
I really love U2, it’s one of my favourites bands. And their last record is very very awesome i think…
Have a good day mike !

  8. Ci on March 12, 2009 at 5:27 am

hey mike. i couldnt find the relevent blog to post this but i wanted to say a big thank you. your music gave me the strength i needed to overcome a bad situation, one which could have ended me. people often ask how can music give you strength but yours did. due to this person i had resgined myself to living an unsafe life, but your music helped me escape that and reminded me to be me and live for me. i cant thank you enough for LP. you have no idea what u hepled save me from & i dont want u to feel sorry for me as everyday i wake up & thats all that matters. once again thank you guys for being LP x PS come to liverpool so i can shout thank you at your concert xx thank you again.

  9. Linda1805 on March 12, 2009 at 2:11 am

Nine Inch Nails have a new album?? Awesome. I haven’t heard about it yet. I love them. My favourite song is “wish”.
U2 is my father’s fav. band. πŸ™‚ I listen to it when he has the cd in his dvd player and i have to do my homeworks.
Two amazing bands and wonderful album covers πŸ™‚

  10. Shinnizly on March 11, 2009 at 2:12 pm

Hi Mike! πŸ™‚ My boyfriend is a big NIN fan and slowly I am becoming a fan too, and it’s funny because the other day we were at the mall and we saw the new U2 album cover and he actually said that it reminded him NIN Ghosts cover and I agreed. The first thing that came to my mind when I saw the begining of this post was if you thought of NIN Ghosts too and you did. πŸ™‚

  11. Meryl on March 11, 2009 at 3:51 am

  12. Giffy on March 10, 2009 at 11:30 pm

    LOL! this is funny! u r funny! & yeah i love U2 too ^^

  13. hereforyoux on March 10, 2009 at 10:22 pm

oh wow. it took me like 5 minutes to figure out why you put those certain pictures up there AND I had to read the comments. I fail. ahaha.
anyways, I think that’s really cool! you guys have started a new album cover/album art trend .. who else could’ve? [: epicness.

  14. lynndarwinharris on March 10, 2009 at 7:24 pm

I like U2 as well, but not any of their new music, I like the older music. U2’s cover obviously copied you guys M2M album cover!

  15. zahra on March 10, 2009 at 12:11 pm

nineIN….there new album was n’t much of a album …..itwas just weird stuff/….///u2 aaaaah i like them to but no love them…lol…i love linkinpark…and ya M2M kicked ass….it was soooo god every song had a new feeling and i just loved it …all of them were good stuff…….DON’T STOP.!!!….LOL…..wish u the best .say hi to evry one….tc….bye

  16. Ana_ on March 10, 2009 at 12:01 pm

I read somewhere that “the imitation is not always a trick or a manifestation of bad faith, but also the land where people seek culture and knowledge.” Think in imitation as a way of compliment. πŸ˜‰ *

  17. rockermeg on March 10, 2009 at 10:03 am

I loved the MTM artwork it was great
HOORAY FOR NINE INCH NAILS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I freakin’ love NIN, “The Hand That Feeds” is such an awesome song!!!

  18. Yuvi on March 10, 2009 at 6:03 am

I’ve always been partial to monochromatic artwork. My favorite has to be the 2nd frame. The contrast of the dark clouds on the upper left hand corner with the light clouds on the upper right hand corner definitely give you a sense of conflict.. or looming conflict.

  19. Hawaii_LP_fan on March 10, 2009 at 12:59 am

They are all pretty cool but I’m partial to the art in the 3rd frame. There’s something special about these guys. Got “major” love for them. :o)

  20. msgirl on March 10, 2009 at 12:02 am

great comparision!i think they liked your artwork! πŸ™‚
I hope your new album will be real linkin park stuff… πŸ™‚ cuz as i know mtm was little bit same as U2’s style…actually i didn’t think so…but so many fans thought so..hey!when is the new album is coming out?i can’t wait.. πŸ™‚

  21. GAI2UDA on March 9, 2009 at 11:43 pm

That’s sad, but it’s you who fucks ANNA? right? remember? They didn’t.

  22. soyuneik on March 9, 2009 at 7:34 pm

I sat down and watched a disgusting 5 minutes of tv….To think that I wasted some memories or important facts on ‘Charles Barkley got out of jail today…the prison required them to wear pink underwear’ and ‘buy this economic stimulus smoke detector’….sigh. YES! Just what I wanted to know! So yea, U2 and NIN, we’re all pulling from the same creative pool. I can see that happening. But to add to the coincidences, my friend just handed me U2’s Rattle and Hum Dvd. Apparently, it contains a few songs not available on the Live album or anywhere else.

  23. PankakeMunky on March 9, 2009 at 7:17 pm

oh man, that is hilarious. think of this: most bands say that they’re influenced by u2. now you and the rest of LP can brag and say you guys helped influence u2 with their new album art. haha.

  24. burningdaylight on March 9, 2009 at 5:39 pm

LMFAO!!!! that’s pretty ironic lol….U2’s ok, but Bono can be kind of egotistical. their charity work is awesome, though!

  25. analoggirl on March 9, 2009 at 5:18 pm

I bet you didn’t expect your fans to call you out on your similarities to U2. “Shadow of the Day” will always remind me of “With or Without You.”
To your point, U2’s album art resembles MTM and Ghosts.

  26. MS_Ineedyou on March 9, 2009 at 4:23 pm

Haha thats cool!! x) btw — I love U2(you too) Mike !!! XDD —Brooke

  27. pepper on March 9, 2009 at 4:00 pm

    HAHAHA thats fantastic!! lol
I actually did read an article once that talked about Chester being the next Bono, wierd huh? lol

  28. NoMoreSorrowGirl on March 9, 2009 at 3:25 pm

Ha!…LP got six members and U2 got 4…why is it that you don’t wear sunglasses!?maybe you will goin’ to look like Bono…

    “By the way, I love U2″…I know U love me 2!hahaha!…I love U 2:)

  29. ShadowerLiltani on March 9, 2009 at 3:22 pm

I got tired of U2 a long, long time ago. But yeah, this gave me a bit of a chuckle. Congrats Mike, ya’ll started the b&w album cover revolution.

  30. skindesbous on March 9, 2009 at 3:02 pm

HAHAHAHA it made me laugh πŸ˜€

  31. Madlen on March 9, 2009 at 2:42 pm

That is so weird…I just saw a video about U2’s new album on Mad tv.Anyway I love U2 too:DIt’s something that most of the people don’t know about me:)My dad loves them so i started listening to them because of him.

  32. lucky_cat on March 9, 2009 at 1:56 pm

still laughing yeah, I love U2. The similarity of the back of the booklet to the MTM cover is evident. I don’t know how you look at it, but I think it’s a way to show some respect to relate to an artist. It’s quite common, I think … recently I came across another example. Do you remember Santogold’s video “L.E.S. Artistes”?… the black horse? Now look at this cover by Missy Elliott:

  33. MClaire on March 9, 2009 at 1:51 pm

By the way, Linkin Park ‘s still the best

  34. thenewLinkinPete on March 9, 2009 at 1:48 pm

I swear Bono looks just like Brad on the third one! I think he just forgot to comb his hair…

  35. NoFace on March 9, 2009 at 1:45 pm

You should have posted a pic of Chester in What I’ve Done and a pic of Bono. Twins.
I think Bono is weird (ah, shoot me), but their music is love (and the Edge <3). Love them from Sunday Bloody Sunday to Where The Streets Have No Name then Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own. I do find U2 as a whole band weird (the image, maybe, can’t explain, ha), but their sound suits me, and I think they’re the senseis you should learn a hell lot from. Anyway, when it comes to your album’s cover, I still prefer your own artwork to some photos. And why so many people imply that U2 (or someone else) is imitating LP or vice versa? O cut me some slack with the whole imitation crap. Life happens,eh?

  36. Curiosa on March 9, 2009 at 1:24 pm

Maybe they figured if u guys can copy their style in music (MTM) then they can at least copy you’re art work. :p It actualy goes w/title of album.

Ha! We discused them on fmmb already. I also luv The Joshua Tree but that’s the only ful album that I like from them. HTDAAB was good but not that great (still luv Vertigo). I really wanted to see them n concert & since they dissed the whole state & didn’t come I will no longer be buying their albums (but mostly cause I’ve been disapointed by their whole albums in general). Like some1 else said I want 2 hear something new & fresh not the same old thing (reason why I wasn’t big fan of MTM). I also don’t care 4 their new song GOYB either.

  37. LPfeather on March 9, 2009 at 1:02 pm

Haha you’ve forgotten this other cover of U2

    They keep their style up!
This was the first cover that came into my mind when i first saw your cover of Minutes to midnight.

Edit: ah crap, the link doesn’t work, try this one

  38. murry on March 9, 2009 at 12:30 pm

That’s ironic, after so many people accused you guys of biting U2 on MTM. I love both bands, so it doesn’t bother me in the least. Would you guys consider opening for U2 on a tour, if they invited you? That’s a silly question, isn’t it?

  39. mack on March 9, 2009 at 12:19 pm

    i love u2 …i love LP!!!

  40. SinisterNL on March 9, 2009 at 12:16 pm

lol, oh well. can happen ya nkow.

  41. xomusicmaniac94 on March 9, 2009 at 11:49 am

i love U2… Imitation is the greatest form of flattery. Especially since you say that you love U2, you must’ve been kind of pleased huh?

  42. Kalini on March 9, 2009 at 11:43 am

Wow, it looks like copy and paste. Obviously it could be used in a creative work, too. The album cover artwork is made by the Japanese artist Hiroshi Sugimoto. Maybe he is influenced by LP, too. It’s very nice that U2 is influenced by LP, but according to me artists, who have reached such a high level, should generate new ideas. I’ve never been a very big U2 fan, but I liked a lot some of their early albums and their songs for movie soundtracks. I heard their new single “Get on your boots” and I wasn’t impressed. I’m not quite sure if I’ll buy their new album. KK

  43. tpbarbosa on March 9, 2009 at 11:34 am

    @Paradox: Mike’s the last one πŸ˜‰

I like this sense of loneliness these pics bring to me, though I just get pissed when ppl compares last LP album to U2 recent stuff, I mean you got your own sound and doesn’t matter how much you love a band, I’m sure you won’t want to be called as a copy of it.
Anyway U2 is cool, not one of my favorite bands but yeah they still cool πŸ˜€ My dad likes them a lot πŸ˜‰

  44. anaslinkin on March 9, 2009 at 11:16 am

  45. spraypaintNinkpens on March 9, 2009 at 11:12 am

yuck, please stay away from the u2 themes. You guys are your own band. I really hope this next album is creative and sounds like lp, not u2.

  46. cuz on March 9, 2009 at 10:46 am

I love U2 too! It was funny because I was just listening to thier new album (which I like a lot) while opened your blog and saw the artwork, ha! Interesting, looks like LP is setting new trend πŸ˜‰

  47. Moonlight_Dagger on March 9, 2009 at 10:41 am

Well, what do you think? i mean other than in love with you 2 ?

  48. PARADOX on March 9, 2009 at 10:21 am

  51. ffmuteki9 on March 9, 2009 at 9:52 am
Proably the cover of U2’s new album is much more like the one ofTylor Deupree.

on that webpage, Tylor Deupree is on left hand side(face your moniter), and US is on the right.

  52. miKer0cks on March 9, 2009 at 9:50 am

Hehe!!! I knew it!!! πŸ˜€ You love U2!!! They are an amazing band…Bono is cool πŸ™‚ So lucky you’ve talked with him πŸ™‚ Although I dont really like their new songs, some old like ”Beautiful Day”, ”One” (feat Mary Brige), ”All Because of You” and more are really great πŸ˜‰

Awesone cover Mike πŸ™‚ Good work…like them all πŸ™‚

  53. MartaH on March 9, 2009 at 9:24 am

hahahahahahah XD well, yeah we all love U2 but your cover is absolutely better! just LP has Chester with his unmistakeble boots but above all Brad’s hair!! πŸ˜€ kisses!

  54. jenshinoda88 on March 9, 2009 at 9:19 am

ahahhah!! I have seen too brad and joe in the middle! OMG … but could actually have a little more imagination .. however … objectively more beautiful your picture, and I say this not because I am part of! πŸ˜‰

  55. MarishkaLP on March 9, 2009 at 9:13 am

hahaa that’s fun! but yours cover’s definitely better! i’ve been thinkin’ ab the things u guys, from LP, listen to, and i wonder how u can like U2, Stone Temple Pilots, Depech Mode and that kind of stuff if your music’s COMPLETELY different. I thought if someone likes one style of music then he tries to make his own music in that style, doesn’t he? anyway, your style’s different from all the bands’ style on earth, and i LOVE it! lots of bands 2day try to make the same sound as yours but they fail and they’ll never manage 2 do this, because they’re not Mike, Chester, Brad, JOE i’ve never seen someone like Joe xD, Rob and Dave. LOVE U GUYS! U’R THE BEST!

  56. KOBSHI on March 9, 2009 at 9:09 am

I know I’m off topic, but I want to say something when I saw this:
    25/07/2009 Finland
    26/07/2009 Russia
    28/07/2009 Switzerland
    01/08/2009 UK
    07-09/08/2009 Japan

Um..where’s Hong Kong? Huh, no more Asia countries?
how come my dream not come true in 2009? let me sing with you guys huh?
    OK, I’m just naughty. =P

  57. Anstice on March 9, 2009 at 8:59 am

Haha! You say you love U2. Now, did you love U2 before or do you love them now because they’re artwork seems to have been inspired by Linkin Park’s cover art?
I agree with Alyeska though. I totally thought the guys in the middle were Brad and Joe for a moment, and I was like, “Why is he just showing us pictures of LP and NIN? I wanted to see new U2 stuff =(”
Good job, though, U2. πŸ˜‰ That was sure subtle of you…hmm…

  58. alyeska39 on March 9, 2009 at 8:53 am

Haha… I lol’ed… Subtle much? They even look like you guys – the 2 in the middle look like Brad and Joe.

  59. Yves on March 9, 2009 at 8:48 am

haha I had the same thoughts when I opened the CD for the first time.
By the way, I love U2 too, the new record sounds very interesting, sometimes a bit like Linkin Park… πŸ˜‰

  60. Maaark on March 9, 2009 at 8:45 am

Hey man! Great artwork! … and great comparison. HA!

By the way, were you being ironic? I mean… can’t imagine you listening to U2. But maybe I’m wrong. HA! I’m a big fan of NIN though. They rock!

    Take care Mike!

  61. Gabry94LinkinParkfan23 on March 9, 2009 at 8:40 am

heey Mike. well i luv the second n third one, the other ones are k. thanks for sharing with us πŸ™‚ take care n have a great day, Gabry

  62. Squishy_Ho on March 9, 2009 at 8:35 am

originality at its best. maybe you guys should get a new photograph or something.

    just sayin’.

  63. LPmAgaS on March 9, 2009 at 8:18 am

yo Mike… I love U2 too!!! But, everybody knows that there isn’t any other band that is better than you guys…!!!:)

  64. Shinoda77 on March 9, 2009 at 8:00 am

I noticed the same thing πŸ˜€ I love you too πŸ˜€
    Besides, that is totally ironic.

  65. linkinladie328 on March 9, 2009 at 7:28 am

By the way, I love you too.

  66. prisonsecks on March 9, 2009 at 7:15 am

Black and white is the new technicolour, haven’t you heard? =)

  67. Andizzle on March 9, 2009 at 7:05 am

Somehow I doubt the MTM cover was shot on Dollymount Beach, Co. Dublin though… πŸ™‚

So Mike, you want to go to a real U2 concert? July 24th 2009, in Croke Park, Dublin, Ireland.
U2 on home soil, in the most infamous Irish venue ever…
    confirmation here:

  68. durg on March 9, 2009 at 6:59 am

    ironic :p
    yours is better though ;D

  69. Aqua101 on March 9, 2009 at 6:26 am

Ha-ha-ha…You are indeed a very funny man, Mr. Shinoda. I love the comparison you presented here. Black & White is always be my fav classic style. BTW, I do love U2. They’re one of my favourite bands of all time, many of their songs are also so unique. But, I do love more LP now. You guys are much way better!!! Oh, Mike…when is the next LP album out?? Pleeaazzee update us. I can’t wait to hear some more unbeatable tunes of yours. Take care, buddy πŸ˜‰

  70. beamer87 on March 9, 2009 at 6:08 am

For a second I thought that was the MTM album artwork, and then you threw a curveball by throwing the MTM artwork in there. It does look very similar, but that isn’t the Salton Sea, is it? U2 is sick btw.

  71. Unleashed2k on March 9, 2009 at 4:45 am

Hey Mike, Are you a Nine Inch Nails fan? (and what about chester?)

  72. MiileLP on March 9, 2009 at 4:32 am

Really, is so much similar . It’s show how you’re amazing ! I love U2 too ..they’re very cool but, LP is my big big LOVE forever by the way, today is my b-day Mike, say happy b-day to me 8) HAHAHA well, I love you guy ❀

  73. bojkic on March 9, 2009 at 4:13 am

ahahahha… I guess you can be proud when things like these happen πŸ˜€ but at the same time I know it can feel a bit weird and unappealing (couldn’t think of a more appropriate word, and not too strong at the same moment). I guess, as always, you’ve pushed the new trend and now everyone uses it… But that’s normal. Have you seen The Killers album cover?(it is similar to the one of unused album covers you published on

I have listened to the whole album and I don’t know if I am getting it. I love U2 but this it just too much. I got bored and cannot accept more of the same into the musical library of my brain πŸ˜€ However, going to see them live most definitely in Zagreb in August.

  74. Lvix on March 9, 2009 at 3:27 am

    Hi Mike,

Actually a lot of friend told me this when MTM just came out:
Linkin Park is the new U2!

    Greetz from Lode

  75. Brittney on March 9, 2009 at 3:11 am

LOL They’re so similar. They’re even standing in some of the same poses as you guys.

  76. Brittney on March 9, 2009 at 3:10 am

LOL They’re so similar. They’re even standing in some of the same poses as you guys.

  77. big_bad_lukas on March 9, 2009 at 3:05 am

thats what i was thinking when i saw the u2 artwork as well…… i wonder how many more bands will do this πŸ˜€

  78. linkingabo on March 9, 2009 at 2:30 am

its a bit similar to the MTM :D:D

  79. Xenith on March 9, 2009 at 2:02 am

When I saw the posters the other week I thought EXACTLY the same thing Mike. There is a bit of a conflict in my house as my partner is a huge U2 fan and well I love LP/FM. Although after hearing the new album my partner is more than happy to agree with the many disappointments I have with U2.

They say in my line of business that the greatest form of flattery is to steal ones concept… I guess.

  80. MattZone on March 9, 2009 at 1:57 am

You are funny man Mr. Shinoda. I do believe I have nothing else to say regarding this matter. Farewell.

  81. rocksylvie on March 9, 2009 at 1:54 am

I love U2 but I love much more Linkin Park! And we’ll never know what inspired U2’s artwork, are we? Lav ya!

  82. Dori on March 9, 2009 at 1:16 am

U2 IS a great band! So, the album is good? You have a favorite track? I was thinking about buying it…

  83. sassi_lp on March 9, 2009 at 1:16 am

I’m into black and white, it always makes pictures and art pieces look very epic, it puts the emphasis on the essence and message of the picture or piece, rather than being distracted by many bright colors. Sometimes that’s just really nice.

  84. Shadow on March 9, 2009 at 1:08 am

Yeah, reminds me to finally go and listen to U2’s new album…lol…I have it at home since nearly a week but never got to listen to it πŸ™‚ They are just great!
The similarities in art are…interesting but I also think it was not U2 but a paid designer, just as linkinparc mentioned below. How do you feel, Mike, when you see things like this?

  85. bec on March 9, 2009 at 1:05 am

I saw that on a poster on the tube the other day and thought “Wow was that done in retaliation for Linkin Park copying ‘With or Without You?!”

I hope both bands see it as ‘imitation is flattery’

  86. linkinparc on March 9, 2009 at 12:27 am

Kinda cool to see that even those “legends” are taking their inspiration from other, “younger” artists.

But I wonder if the Band came up with the idea, and not just a paid designer.
Im sure my second thought is right.

However their music sounds okay to me, I respect those guys to be the “oldest” schoolband in the world and their music changed a lot, even political.

  87. keineAhnung on March 9, 2009 at 12:09 am

haha…it’s funny that you mention their cover…read about it when they “revealed” it the first time…there was a lot of fuss about it here in austria because the picture shows the “Bodensee” (a lake at the border between austria, switzerland and germany)…anyway, the picture was take by Hiroshi Sugimoto in 1993 and also used by taylor deupree for his album “specification fifteen” from 2006…ROFL, seems like U2 have been “inspired” by a lot of people…ROFL (btw
    deuprees album cover
