Lost In Translation: Beef…what?

April 8, 2009

I caught this new photo for my “Lost In Translation” collection while shopping at an asian market in L.A. I imagine there was an old Japanese guy in the back, who spoke no English, telling the young stockboy, “look, I don’t know what they call these things, just make something up.”

More lost in translation here:

and here (these are not mine, but they’re amazing):

HA! Mike doesn’t know what it is, it’s ox genital!!!!!

  2. dyahikhsanti on July 6, 2010 at 11:56 pm

this is my fav topic. i’m a translator, also i indonesia many people use english words in the wrong context. ‘coz they have built the wrong image of that word.
i saw a small restaurant in Jember (small town in indonesia) “ayam chicken” (‘ayam’ is indonesian language means ‘chicken’. they made this phrase because they think ‘chicken’ is chicken that fried with flour). yeah,,,, better if we love our own language before learning other languages.

  3. Sherry Kim Lee on June 24, 2010 at 7:27 pm

I named my first Wii character Pizzle knowing full well what it meant. I’m not surprised part of asians think it will make them, uh, stronger. At least you don’t need to ask your doctor those embarrasing questions!

  4. Jay Sensei on April 9, 2010 at 12:13 pm

for shizzle to the pizzle, wurd

  5. ChrisDo on August 18, 2009 at 2:15 am

  6. nillp on April 19, 2009 at 3:23 pm

“look, I don’t know what they call these things, just make something up.”

haha. for sure we can see that the young guy did what he asked him to..! XD

anyway. it’s always good to see some of you LIT.. o

  7. YichenWang on April 18, 2009 at 7:54 am

Hey Mike…This Translation is completely right…
I can read Chinese..and this word means “bull’s penis” (pronounce: Niu Bian)
You know, lots of Asia People think that is a healthy eating for a man Cause It can make you get stronger…..
Anyway I don’t like it totally and I never ate it…..

  17. xdistantxsanityx on April 10, 2009 at 2:00 pm

I love that you’ve checked out engrish! That’s one of my favorite sites, actually – along with failblog, i canhashotdog, icanhascheezburger, and just about everything else within that site. Beef Pizzle though…is Snoop Dogg labeling the meat there?

  23. Hawaii_LP_fan on April 9, 2009 at 10:38 pm

Um, maybe beefu tizzle is oishi? haha, you are hilarious Mike. For some reason, romaji writing or speaking reminds me of my grandma. As a child, I would never disrespect or giggle at her no matter how funny she sounded pronouncing words. I’d be confused but that would prompt me to ask her in japanese..um, yah that would be a task! :p I have to say, whatever this market is selling, I’d ask for samples first. Haha, thanks Mike.

  24. Maaark on April 9, 2009 at 5:55 pm

OMFG! Now I know why I love this blog. It makes you laugh even if you’re having a bad day. HA!

That website is great, I love how you vote in Domos :] (Yay for Domo!!!)
‘Dumpling stuffed with the ovary and digestive glands of a crab’ …sounds tasty :3

  31. _MiHaRu_ on April 9, 2009 at 9:57 am

o my god..I don’t think I wanna eat those..things!!!!!I’m sorry but to me this is disgusting!!!!!ahahah and you are unbelievable mike!!you take photoes of everything!!do you even sleep with your camera??o well..that’s a good thing after all..I like this side of you!

PS,Mike I just wanna thank Music for Relief for speakin about the awful earthquake that hit Italy (Aquila) on Monday morning..it really means a lot!!Also I want to add that the people that have been killed are no more 40 but the number has grown to more than 280 victims..and the earthquakes are not finished..

  32. ffmuteki9 on April 9, 2009 at 9:35 am

I think the funny part is you guys’ reaction. :p But it does interesting, or even weird, disgusting to you guys. In Chinese culture people believe that eating those generative organs of animals will do your those parts good. For example in Taiwan, chicken testicle is a common dish, many girls, women eat it. In Taiwan there was even a case said that a 9, 10-year-old boy ate too~~~~ much chicken testicle resulting in making his body getting into adolescence early. people grow up in Chinese culture eat more animals organs than westerners. probably you guys come to Taiwan on August may try out those “cuisine” 🙂

  33. noidea on April 9, 2009 at 9:21 am

haha! Mike, Actually it definitely what it means. haha The Chinese words in the sign is actually the meaning of beef pizzle. I never tried that before but Chinese people do use all kinds of material to cook.

  34. KOBSHI on April 9, 2009 at 9:13 am

Eating pizzle is funny thing to you guys?may be,but not to me(though I’ven’t try it before),it’s very common in China.Well, chinese has using great diversity of ingredients and cooking methods, like simmering chicken feet soup, stewed pig leg with peanuts. You may wonder how tongue of pig, tripe of beef can be eaten, but I can assure you that they’re taste good!no kidding. So it’s not surprise to see there’s a food called”pizzle wine”,um,it’s a remedy for diminished virility, you can use powdered dog, horse, deer, sheep or tiger penis whatever you want..ok,I think I should stop talking about this sick topic. You can find more foolish translation in China restaurant, but believe me,you don’t wanna see it.

  35. Sakshi on April 9, 2009 at 8:47 am

Hi, Mike!!! I am new at this and very pleased to post. You are a fantastic rapper with a fabulous personality…..that means you are totally “Fantabulous”. You are really a rockstar, man. I love your songs. I know that this is not a right place to write this but actually I don’t know where to post a direct message for you. I am a great fan of you and your band. I am from INDIA. I request you to make a tour to the whole Asia(of course, including India). People are really mad for you here. I promise you for an overwhelming response from India and specially Delhi as it is the capital. I beg of you to think over it and please do reply to me….please!!! Peace and love….SAKSHI :-)))))

  36. Anstice on April 9, 2009 at 8:45 am

Haha, well, considering it was next to a Cornish Hen, I was almost sure it was made up. However, upon very rough and 2-second research, I’ve deduced that “Pizzle” means penis. Now, here’s my question. WHO IN THE FUCK WANTS TO EAT BULL DICK?! …End rant.
PS – I agree with Dorito Burrito Dori. If there was some guy, standing in the middle of a grocery store taking pictures, ESPECIALLY of Beef Pizzle…I think I would call the cops??

  37. Merecy on April 9, 2009 at 8:36 am

    Hi Mike

  39. Aqua101 on April 9, 2009 at 5:56 am

HaHaHaHaHaHaHa… you are really a funny guy, Mikey! That’s what I like about you! As a Chinese myself, I know those meanings. First image, on left side, chicken bla-bla-bla & right side, beef pizzle means beef bull’s penis. Sometimes, they even sell Pig’s Pizzle (means Pig’s penis)…don’t u like to try one, Mike? It can give you a strength or more power to do whatever you think like to do…(if u know what I mean)…HaHaHaHaHaHa…Cheers, buddy 😀 ≈♥≈

  42. Lvix on April 9, 2009 at 3:50 am

    26 minutes to buy heroin?

    This sounds no good,
If i want to get crazy.
You can give me 26 letters from the alphabet.

  43. Eddie on April 9, 2009 at 3:40 am

TO ERBSELP’s PICTURE: Oh my god….. Heroin is one of the WORST drugs, if it’s not the worst. The “strongest” who takes this drug has 4 years life MAXIMUM. Most of the users die in 1 – 2 years. These users I have heard can’t buy cocaine, cause is too expensive, so they take this one. I’m from Athens, Greece. In Greek it’s called ” ηρωίνη ” (heroine or iroini it’s the accent in Greek, the name in English is Heroin). But MY GOD I can’t believe I see this one…. Drugs to buy…. Hope they were joking. People die from these F*****G substances. Many, MANY people, young and old, die every day from these drugs… Check out wikipedia to see it’s chemical structure.

  44. Melissa on April 9, 2009 at 3:36 am

Doesn’t pizzle mean like, you know something like… you know a bulls… thingy? So really the guy hasn’t made it up, it’s a bull’s… Did you buy it and eat it? Muwha. I grew up on a farm and that’s definitely a phrase that was used for that.

But, I’m a veggie, so I’d like to just think the bull was gangster, wasn’t defenceless and had guns. Haha.

  45. ErbseLP on April 9, 2009 at 3:11 am

Wah… I have enter the word in google… ~.~ xD

Btw. can someone tell me what this mean? I was with my class in england … my english teacher couldn’t even tell me what they mean. xD (sry, i know, my english is really bad Oo xD)

  46. bojkic on April 9, 2009 at 2:06 am

pizzle ???? 😀 you should have made a picture of the meat too so we could tell what it really is 😀 I love inventing words in my language. I usually just take a regular word and change it to make it fit the meaning better or invent sth that I think sounds like it has that meaning 😀 Of course, my friends and my girlfriend get annoyed by that very much 😀

So, you just went to the market…. you seem not to have any problems with people recognizing you on the street 😀 OR you can disguise very well. 😀

Hope the album and the paintings are progressing well. Have fun making them.

EDIT: Melissa is right. I just googled it 😀 “Pizzle is an old English word for penis” 😀

  51. mike_n_LP_4ever on April 8, 2009 at 10:08 pm

LMAO! The first thing I saw was ‘Pizzle’ and I started laughin so hard that I fell on my face and my chair fell on top of me! The first thing i thought of is a rhyme that Snoop Dog would say LMAO “Fo shizzle ma nizzle! Try some damn Beef Pizzle!” LOL!!! Thats funny sigh. And it’s funny what you think too xDD “just make something up.” 🙂

PS – I agree with Dori! Does anybody just look at you like, “Why the hell are you taking a picture of a food sign thats makes whats so ever?” 😛

  52. Dori on April 8, 2009 at 9:55 pm

haha Now, this is somewhat off-topic, but I wanted to know… do you ever get strange looks from people when you’re in the middle of a supermarket taking random pictures!? Long time no talk, btw, Mike! Hope you’re still enjoying your respite from tour life! What’s going on with Proj. Rev this Summer?
