I’m filled with wonder how something could be so inspiring! You remind me of the importance of being myself, and this doctrine is a good remedy to set me free. Thank you for sharing these beautiful things!

thank you Mike and all of you guys in Linkin Park…if it wasn’t for your music as my therapy to get rid of my anger issues since i’m out of the hospital for about 4 years ago i’ll be a mess. it reminds me stick to my guns no matter what other people say if i have decisions in my own life. like the only captain in your life nobody else. what kind of human are you if you let them dictate everything in your life? well at least they can kiss your behinds now and slap your awards on their faces as sweet revenge.
lynndarwinharris on May 3, 2009 at 8:45 pm
Great Speech and so true! Thanks for sharing!
Kalini on May 3, 2009 at 12:55 pm
I remember myself back in 2002 sitting and waiting to get my Bachelor’s diploma from the president, who has graduated from the same faculty. He said that the students who graduate from this faculty become the best politicians and even “presidents”. Maybe that’s why I included Political science in my Master’s program, although I’ve had no interest for a political career. The speaker at your graduation is very important, because he influences you somehow. I’m impressed by your speech, it’s professional and at the same time very sincere. I can’t believe that you’ve never practiced this “Rock star” thing. You gave the proper advice “Your integrity is not for sale!” KK
SinisterNL on May 3, 2009 at 2:54 am
haha, mike you DID ”trash” a hotel room once!
may i remind you of frat party at the pancake festval

Two advices that you gave become tha main advices for me because I try to break rules and go untraditional way too. Your example with Mr A is very bright….We, all the fans of LP, are proud of you!

I’m really greatful for you sharing, i’ve always wanted to hear something like this from you! In all the LPU chats I try and ask questions about this kinda thing, like from everything you have expereinced and learned, what advice you would give to us all. Very grateful for the speech, i’ve already watched it a couple of times, I will deffo make sure I apply it to my life because thats always how i’ve felt too!
Dori on May 1, 2009 at 12:59 pm
Wonderful speech, Mike! You didn’t seem nervous at all! I woulda been scared to death lol I have experience in theater, but theater and public speaking are very different. Commencement speeches are usually boring as hell, but that was quite entertaining!

thanks for sharing!
mshcooper on May 1, 2009 at 11:19 am
that was just great. really, great speech! I really agree with you and even though the area i want to follow has nothing to do with art i think that the advices you gave just aply to every single path we try to follow. our streght has to be inner force that’s for sure, as well as we should be happy with whatever we choose to be. i just wish i could be as certain as you were when you went to arts (you were certain right?), ‘cuz it’s scary to think that maybe we’re just not ment to be anything =| what would u do if you were in that situation? it’s that sometimes the streght to carry on doesn’t even existes. but well, great speech once more! really love it! *

Seriously though, that was an amazing speech. Very inspiring, and entertaining. I hope I have someone like you at my graduation!!

Madawena on May 1, 2009 at 4:24 am
Hello there, great speech by the way. I am posting a message here because I really like your job in the Linkin Park and also in Fort Minor. You really inspire me and so I was wondering if you could help me in one thing. I am Portuguese but I teach English here in Portugal and I have a class where the students are really demotivated and having some learning difficulties because they don’t have skills and because they just don’t want to. And teaching English is quite a hard task because they really don’t like it but they do like music because they are listening all the time. So maybe if it was possible i would like to give them the opportunity to talk to you online, what do you think?
Zung92 on May 1, 2009 at 4:21 am
Great Speech Mike!!! I’d like to be Doctor too xD
but I want you to see this crazy & sad japanese film – “Achilles and the Tortoise” (Akiresu to kame)

Elliot_aka_MC_Eli on April 30, 2009 at 11:35 pm
Very good and inspiring speech mike! Here are some pointers i can give you. When you recall an event, i.e like when your telling about the story of Mr. A. You should try your best not to look at a piece of paper. Try your best to look a specific person in the eye, pick someone out on the right, left, and middle of the room. This makes your tone a more personal one, and it won’t make it sound like your reading from a piece of paper. See, your speech had a very clear tone to it, but it almost had a linear tone to it. It’s like when your reading out loud. You have the narrator’s voice and then you have the character’s voice. Just a few tips, i could give more, but not enuf room lol. GJ!!

You did an off the hook job congratulating those graduates! I can’t say the same for your camera guy./girl…haha. I think he or she got swept away in the moment as you articulated your thoughts very clearly. That’s why I love Linkin Park’s music & the band, one little word that explains who Linkin Park is from the inside (no pun intended) “integrity”. It’s unheard of in other bands, groups, soloists, and so on. Integrity speaks volumes to me. Thanks Mike for sharing your 1st graduation speech. Sending you a “heart smile”. Susie P.S. Comedy central better watch out, Sensei Mike can kick butt! :p

Sup doctor Shinoda! That was a nice speech. I bet you were really nervous, right? But I really like what you said to them, especially that Mr A story. It just prooves that we need to believe in ourselves and never do anything for the wrong reasons.
Again, great speech, I’m really proud of you! You rock man.
mike_n_LP_4ever on April 30, 2009 at 7:39 pm
That was such a great speech Mike ! Dam…late 40s to early 50s ?? Woah ! 😛 Uh Mike: You may not have trashed a hotel room, but you broke a table in half lol “Stupid Rockstar…” xDDD And like almost everyone else is saying on here about “Mr. A” the song Get Me Gone is about that…but I’m not to sure about Magic Doors…I do not give a damn; got tracks on the Billboard but here I am. With my man Green Lantern raising hell again… I guess. 🙂 Peace out Doc.
PS – Chester recorded that…yea…i kno he did ! 😛
PankakeMunky on April 30, 2009 at 7:39 pm
that was a great speech. you were great at making it humorous but very inspiring at the same time. you are right, if you want to make your life the way it is, you have to keep your integrity in tact, otherwise you’ll lose your uniqueness to the world. if only you would give a speech at my college, then everyone can stay awake during a ceremony. lol.
ThePrincess on April 30, 2009 at 6:46 pm
Good speech.. Good appearance … and Good looking too .. Thanks God fortunately it is not in my graduation because believe me my face will be like this and I certainly will not concentrate on your speech LOL ! .. BRAVO DR SHINODA !!!

I loved your speech, Mike! It was so inspiring and some parts were funny to listen to. You are a wonderful speaker and congratulations on receiving an honorary doctorate. You are such an inspiration to all of us. May you continue to follow your dreams and achieve the impossible.
Sharisse on April 30, 2009 at 3:22 pm
Thank you so much for posting this video. I was looking forward to seeing your speech, so this is the perfect birthday present I could get. =) I think you did a wonderful job. You were a great choice for a speaker because all the advice that you gave, you can back up. You’re proof that you don’t have to “sell” your integrity to become something. You followed your dreams, doing what you wanted to do, and didn’t compromise your integrity along the way. It is a very inspirational speech. Again, thanks for sharing it with us.
lp_fm_fan on April 30, 2009 at 3:15 pm
Great speech! 😀 I would of been nervous, too nervous but you did it well! Kudos!
Btw, there was a hoobastank chat a while ago and someone asked about if Linkin Park would tour with them (Hoobastank) again, all they talked about was the Summer Sonic shows but no long term plans, if Linkin Park asked them they would definitely agree, and well now I’m wondering, would you go back on tour with Hoobastank, again?
xomusicmaniac94 on April 30, 2009 at 3:14 pm
The speech was fantastic. Not only did you add humor to it, you gave great advice and made it really inspiring. Plus, you could tell that you were genuine and believed in what you said… I really wish i was in that graduating class!

God, Mike, you’re unbelievable! That was definitely the best graduation ever! I’d love to hear the words like that when I’ll end up my studies. Funny, thoughtful and so strengthening. I had this great feeling of making me stronger and so refreshed by your words. And let’s be honest, that was YOUR speech. I guess the graduates were so happy and excited to have you at such day. Again, you are so active and so successful in every effort…Thank you so much for the video! It’d be interesting to see how they gave you an honorary degree too. Guess you were so proud 🙂 I was. Have a nice day Dr. Shinoda and thank you again 🙂 Just for the simple fact you exist.
MS_Ineedyou on April 30, 2009 at 1:30 pm
Haha Mike, you’re hilarious 😄 “more sober, and more concerning” laughs from the crowd ” …..or not” 😄 Hahahaha. I know you said you aren’t the best at public speeking, but you’re speech was amazing. A lot about what you said about Mr.A and the labels and stuff was very useful. I’m guessing when he said that you should drop the rapping from LP’s music … that inspired you to write “Get Me Gone” (love that song btw) Well, it was an amazing speech Mike. Have a good day 🙂 —Brooke.
allUK3473 on April 30, 2009 at 1:18 pm
What a wonderful speech! Very nice. I’m so envious of everyone in the graduating class. They should feel lucky to hear what you have to say. And very funny as well.
SalseraShari on April 30, 2009 at 1:16 pm
This speech is, in a word, profound.
Your honesty in speaking of the poignancy of this country’s economic status, on top of incorporating the humor as well as real life events from your experiences really makes this speech very relatable and moving. Also your choice of words when referring to an artist’s integrity not being ‘for sale’ is very powerful. It’s evident that you put a lot of thought into your words, and that everything you said was very genuine. Thank you for sharing your honesty and advice with us on the site! I know I’m feeling inspired. 🙂
(wow, this comment sounds so nerdy reading it out loud! haha)
analoggirl on April 30, 2009 at 1:10 pm
Great speech! I loved the self-depreciating humour. LOL You obviously have achieved so much in your life, but you seem to live by basic tenets that can be embraced by all. The message that “your integrity is not for sale” is always relevant, but perhaps I can see how it would be salient for young artists in today’s competitive marketplace. I can definitely appreciate the merits of choosing a non-conventional path.
As a fan, I liked the anecdotes. The personal context put your album sales, awards, and ability to release FM’s TRT into perspective.
Now a word for next time: please follow up with some lyrics from “Get Me Gone” or “Magic Doors”. Sold way past gold, never sold my soul. HA!
MusicIsHealthy on April 30, 2009 at 12:35 pm
Amazing speech mike 🙂
thank you for putting it up here on your blog.
I love the way you talk. The best is that you sometimes made some jokes. And I think for many people out there who are still in college and are afraid of the future, YOU are an inspiring example that people can achieve something.
And we are all so proud of you for being such an inspiration 🙂
Take care of you, greetz ❤
Carla on April 30, 2009 at 12:26 pm
Very very inspiring speech. Now go speak at my graduation! lol You also have to say again: “…we are a band made up of 6 somewhat awkward guys that made it in mainstream and ‘shut up when I’m talking to you’ and flailing around on stage with dyed hair and spiked bracelets…” 😄
spraypaintNinkpens on April 30, 2009 at 12:13 pm
Being an educator I can tell you that public speaking is a really hard aspect of the job; you completely nailed it though! Nice job Mike. I loved the fort minor story plus hearing a little more in depth about the “get me gone” story was cool.
miKer0cks on April 30, 2009 at 12:06 pm
Great speech Mike 🙂 You should do that more often! Listening to your speech I gained confidence and I have to say that you put me on thoughts too. Despite the fact that I’ll go to college in two years from now, I really have started to get nervous and be anxious about how things are gonna turn out to be after graduating…But after hearing your speech all seem more clear to me now 🙂 Thx Mike. And I loved that you used LP as examples and that you added some jokes too! You have a great sense of humour 😀
So thx for your amazing speech Dr. Shinoda 🙂 Really congratulations! You deserve it 😀 I think I’m gonna start calling you Sensey Mike or Mr. Proffesor! 😛
