Lunch With Baseman

July 15, 2009

I had lunch with Gary Baseman the other day. What a unique dude. i don’t know when I originally met Gary, but we did a collaboration a while back…here’s a pic of it from my iPhone:

Anyway, we ate good sushi and talked about art and life. I also visited his studio. Gary’s studio is kinda what an artists’s studio should look like: a whole lot of cool stuff packed into an almost-frenetic painting and working space. My studio is not nearly as cool looking…I’ll have to work on that.

Also, Gary gave me a copy of his book. Good stuff.

Warn me next time you decide to post up a painting of a bunny blowing some chick. On a personal note, I don’t see what you see. If there is an actual point in there, then there are other ways of making that point without being so unnecessarily grotesque. Granted, if you read my stories I have a pretty dark thought process myself, but Mr. Baseman went farther than me. That’s a little unnerving.

incredible art, right up my alley – bizarre yet thought provoking

  8. rockermeg on July 16, 2009 at 1:36 pm

Hahaha, it’s a really obvious collab. Cause your styles are so original and different that you could pick them out a mile away.
Is that girl a running theme throughout his art? I’ve seen it in loads of his stuff…
Ahh you know so many cool people

Yea, the collabo is really GREAT! It’s a perfect ying-yang-thing, he. Do you have a title already? I’m sure you guys had a inspiring time together … I’m glad I had the chance to see some of his pieces at the pictopia exhibition here in Berlin in spring, and I know his book. When I look at his artwork I always think of the dreams of a 5 year old …

it is strange but it is cute

  11. Maaark on July 16, 2009 at 11:46 am

It’s interesting to see how he combined childish elements with naughty and adult ones. Maybe he’s trying to show us how kids lost their innocence? If he is, I agree!

I really like the photos, thanks for sharing. How have you been Mike? Prepared to hit the road one more time?

Take care man, have a nice day!

what’s his obsession with naked ladies and bunnies sucking on them ? …weird…

  14. cuz on July 16, 2009 at 10:42 am

The collaboration with Gary is probably my favourite painting from you! That was a love at first sight! Do you still have it at home? I swear I’d buy it if I have money! Does this piece have any name? Then I love STUDY FOR SxDxRnR, collaboration with Mr. Hahn and Martyr – those four are my absolute tops from you! Can’t wait for next art show to see new ones. And I like Gary’s work as well. First heard of him because of your collabo, then checked more stuff. And he’s really great. Glad you had fun.

  15. EmKei on July 16, 2009 at 10:19 am

Haha:))) I like the pictures, although they’re kinda weird…LOL❤

  16. Full_Metal_Ninja on July 16, 2009 at 10:08 am

I think a NSFW warning should be stated with posts like this lol just kidding. Regarding your comment about what an artist’s studio should look like, maybe that’s why a lot of us are drawn here, you’re not the typical artist. (I’m probably ignorantly stereotyping artists) Just sayin’

  17. Sintia on July 16, 2009 at 10:04 am

aww man, and I am starving here at work! Now I want Sushi for lunch.
The collaboration painting you definitly can see is your art work.
Thanks for sharing Mike. I hope you, LP & your families are doing good and are in good health.

i am disterbed by the nakedness…lol

  20. Eddie on July 16, 2009 at 4:53 am

This is amazing! The collaboration painting it has your mark!😉 You know the grey and the light blue “walls” in the right and left side of the painting, the “x”s on the bubbles, the spray that drips (this one is also at the back of your AWESOME LP blue guitar, the one from Somewhere I Belong!) and also the lady with the black dress and this characteristic head, IT’S YOUR ART!!!🙂 It’s an amazing painting Mike!!!! I love it so much!!!! Great MS – Baseman work!!!!

    PS: 5 days left!!!

  21. Madlen on July 16, 2009 at 4:17 am

It does look pretty cool…and btw how about some pictures of your art before Glorious Excess Dies is open for public? Please?:D

  22. lovableFreak on July 16, 2009 at 3:57 am

  25. soyuneik on July 16, 2009 at 1:41 am

I’m thinking Baseman maybe gets down with the furries. (school girl giggle and a sly look) I mean its all good, whatever floats your battleship. I’m all about decapitated things and cool bat guys that fly towards a tree of heads. It makes me feel all warm and well…fuzzy.

PS: Every time you say Unique, a kitten gets its wings.
PSS: Comment below me… I’m curious …What does “gone commercial” mean to you?

  26. Joanie_LP on July 16, 2009 at 1:21 am

    Amazing piece🙂

But I have a question (off topic) – most people say you’ve gone commercial and stuff since MTM. I say to those people that you are progressing, trying to “break” the stereotypical old sound or moving on to the next level and so, because that’s what I personally believe. How would you comment that?

Sorry for putting this question here but I’m not sure if you’re gonna see it. Best wishes, Jo🙂

  27. Mikado on July 16, 2009 at 12:24 am

Hi Mike… I just wanna say THANK YOU…

  28. Raspberry on July 16, 2009 at 12:02 am

I like them pictures, not sure what they remind me of but i have a lifetime to try to remember🙂 As for the ‘Drink up’ picture .. i would hope any young children who look at it feels the whoosh of it going over their heads and are dazzled by the colours instead because it was the last thing i noticed.
It is a thought provoking piece of work and i always think people only see what they want to see … so i guess you guys posting have filthy minds😉

  29. miKer0cks on July 15, 2009 at 11:57 pm

Yeah I remember your collaboration with him! In your first art show back in 2006🙂 The piece is pretty cool! The two characters fit together perfectly😉 LOL the second pic is kinda “weird” if you know what I mean😛 But still it’s great😉 I’m sure your studio looks cool tho! Maybe it’s not like Gary’s but still each artist has his own way of working and the studio is set up as good as possible for him to have everything in order😉

PS. I agree with Jade (Anstice). That guy on twitter pretends to be you! And some ppl believe him! Plz do something about it! It’s a pity to see all these ppl get fooled

  30. LcatP on July 15, 2009 at 11:16 pm

LPBEKKA, Gary Baseman created “Teacher’s Pet”, he also did the art for cranium. Kinda weird going from a children’s cartoon show to a bunny “drinking up” but shows the different levels that an artist can work on. Pretty interesting and unique art. Thanks for sharing MS. Take Care.

  32. Kalini on July 15, 2009 at 9:15 pm

Thanks for that post. But you didn’t answer which images on the first painting are your work. Baseman has a very interesting style. @Curiosa: thanks for letting me know that my link didn’t work. I’m glad that you liked the sand sculptures.
Mike, sorry for the bad link. If you’re interested and have some free time, here is a link to my myspace account: Kalini http://www.myspace.com/471105199 I created a folder Burgas Sandfest on My Photos section. FM and LP are my friends on myspace. K

I like the colors and the idea behind it. But whats up the second picture. Give the poor bunny some water to drink. Its thirsty. He he he :~) I really did like the color combination. Its an innocent balance. I dont like to wear pink. I like to see pink but dont wear it. My favorite color is Black !!! Yes, on the first pic. you can tell theres some Shinoda in it. I would love to get skull girl tatted on me. If thats okay!!! Please do let me know. See u around. Good night, gotta go to work :~) Once again THANKS

  34. LPBekka on July 15, 2009 at 8:47 pm

I know this is probably an odd comparison but his art style really reminds me of this cartoon I watched when I was small, Teacher’s Pet. lol but like I said, just odd, silly.

It’s awesome you got to hang out with someone you obviously admire.

  35. JRock4589 on July 15, 2009 at 8:02 pm

    Love ya Mike🙂

  36. JCD on July 15, 2009 at 7:36 pm

    Hi Mike,

I heard your vocals on “Bleed It Out” and was wondering if you’d be interested in working with some of my song material. I’m an artist/songwriter living in Los Angeles. The material is provocative but doesn’t advocate violence or killing anyone. It pertains to state of mind more than anything else. Titles include:

    Killer In The Street ©2009
    We’re Not Murderers, Yet ©2009
Gun (No Where to Run) ©2009

If you think you’d be interested in seeing the lyrics, I’d be happy to send them to you via Warner Brothers Records or some other venue.

    Thank you.

Best of luck with all your projects!

  37. ThePrincess on July 15, 2009 at 6:53 pm

Yes indeed , he’s the men who have a unique and unusual sense of art ,uhm saw the way he put the bunny character in the ..you know ..right place🙂 & there’re a few fleeting resemblance between ur art and his art ( Pic no 1 , see the background and the puppet , its remind me to ur skull head typical,Only with the sweeter scratch ) But from all of that Mr Baseman was an extraordinary artist & wise coz it can be very pleasant meet with someone who can share stories about life especially if we live in the same world , well thanks for sharing the art and sushi story with us Mike🙂

  38. Curiosa on July 15, 2009 at 6:40 pm

=:O Mike I can’t believe u posted the 2nd pic. Kids come on here.😛 shakes head I still can’t believe u posted it. lol I was wondering why I couldn’t view the small thumbnails last night. lol I like chemist’s description of the 1st pic.

Hey have u heard Get Busy Committee’s latest song “No Time To Speak”? Love the beat.🙂
    http://www.myspace.com/getbusycommittee

@Kalini: Loved the pics of the sand sculptors. Ur link on here didn’t work, might want to post a link of your myspace. Hopefully Mike will remember his password.😉 lol

@Jade: Isn’t that something 4 twitter to address? Have u let them know about it?

  39. Chemist999 on July 15, 2009 at 5:32 pm

Your addition to his painting makes a great counterpoint. Naked / conservative dress, innocent face with huge eyes / industrial face with almost no eyes… and that black / pink combination is yummy. Regarding the second picture, that bunny totally ate her out. Bunnies are good FELLAS.😀

  40. Celestial on July 15, 2009 at 5:08 pm

Oh wow. I just got the vulgarity of the pic myself when Anstice pointed it out. LOL! Wow, I thought bunnies ate carrots…guess not. Baseman’s style is pretty cool! Anyone know where I can pick up a copy of that book?

  41. Anstice on July 15, 2009 at 4:57 pm

Dude, I just looked at that 2nd picture and was like, “Drink up…I don’t get it…wha–OH MY GOD!!” Awesome as that is, Perhaaapppss that shouldn’t be here? Because there are really young kids that come on here? I don’t know, haha. I really like the cover of the book. The paint splatters on the side make for a nice touch. I’ve been staring at the paintings for the last five minutes and am not sure why.

Anyway. You should still address the Twitter conflict. Because a lot of people are still thinking that @m_shinoda is you, and whoever this person is seems to be having a good time telling people lies, of which there are many. So, please stop the madness. Thanks! -Jade
