First concert of Tour: U2

July 19, 2009

First concert of the tour…and it wasn’t ours πŸ™‚ Went to U2 last night with the Phoenix. Pretty great–a good mix of the old and new songs, plus a ridiculous $25 Million stage that looks like a space bug. The video screens were my favorite part.

Hokay. I know I’m pretty much way behind on this because this post was a few pages back, and I normally don’t bother commenting because…well, I don’t see a point. But I must say that is really the epitome of EPIC BADASSERY.

  3. EvaBennoda on July 22, 2009 at 7:39 am

    Lucky U guys ! i haven’t seen them Live yet !!! I guess it was awesome πŸ™‚ I like U2 very very much !!!

  4. Curiosa on July 21, 2009 at 10:22 pm

I agree the video screens do look great & $25 M is 2 much 4 a stage. During their “Vertigo” tour they were charging venues $5 M to play. I wouldn’t b surprised if the venues refused & that’s why they didn’t come to TX. I guess they didn’t care about their fan base in TX. They’ve slowly ben losing me as a fan, still The Joshua Tree is still my fave album of all time. The playlist does seem a bit short. I’m glad u guys don’t feel like u have 2 have sumthing like that on stage cause u guys don’t need that & it would just be a distraction. U guys bring the energy out there & that’s why I enjoy ur shows & not cause of sum fancy space bug. Glad u enjoyed U2. πŸ™‚ TC

  6. NotAnAngel on July 21, 2009 at 5:06 pm

U2…..they are good; but you were far far away from the stage…not like me in Greece just a few hours ago…you were good too..just were great!!!!please come again a few years after………

  7. Janine1978new on July 21, 2009 at 8:07 am

Hey Mike, it’s cool, you like U2. I was on 07/04/09 in Berlin/Germany (Olympiastation). Really great show, the stage was so … mmh (I found no word’s). I wish me that LP sometimes in Berlin Olympiastation plays. You need not, of course, such a stage.

  8. Ezza on July 21, 2009 at 1:07 am

hmmm ive never been a fan of u2 verdigo wasnt bad but the latest is sucky to say the least
and that stage is SLIGHTLY excessive!!

  9. CuteWhiteBunny on July 20, 2009 at 10:46 pm

I hope you NEVER have a stage that ridiculous and absurd.

There are better ways to spend $25 million… such as a few hundred instruments or something.

  10. analoggirl on July 20, 2009 at 5:22 pm

You posted the setlist! I’m seeing U2 this September and I was hoping to be pleasantly surprised. My ticket cost $32 so I’ll be in the nosebleeds, but it doesn’t look like you good seats either. lol

  11. KuleMagnus on July 20, 2009 at 1:38 pm

How do you know what a space bug looks like? πŸ˜€

  12. ribbe on July 20, 2009 at 12:29 pm

the $25 million stage is awsom!!!

  13. Kalini on July 20, 2009 at 11:19 am

I think that $25 Million stage is a BIG THANK YOU to the old fans who are still there although the not so good album. Could a $25 Million stage compensate a not good enough album? Yes, they’ve always had good music (reading the setlist), but they always show off who they are (looking at the stage). It’s just unnecessary. That’s why I prefer DM. They’ve always been just themselves and their amazing music. They can just go out and play a great remix of an old song: (EMA’s 2001) Do you think LP could perform at an award show in 10 years and play a remix of Numb? I know you love U2, but don’t follow their style. You don’t need this. Just be yourself! K

  14. Sintia on July 20, 2009 at 11:15 am

U2’s stage is a bit much for me. I probly end up missing some of the show just staring at the stage itself. The stage is the show! lol Please don’t think of doing a stage like that for any of the LP concerts. I dont’ want to be distracted. LOL I do like the screens and some of the lighting they have tho. I use to not really care for U2 till my pastor started to play some of their songs during some of the services & explained the meaning of them. So now I really like U2 plus I heard their good LIVE. Glad to hear that you & Phoenix had a good time & thanks for sharing pics from the concert. Be safe & enjoy touring. I hope you, LP & your families are doing good & are in good health.

  15. anaslinkin on July 20, 2009 at 11:15 am

    IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!

  16. Full_Metal_Ninja on July 20, 2009 at 9:23 am

LP should have a giant robot for a stage. Do it.

  17. Diana83 on July 20, 2009 at 7:36 am

Hi Mike, how are you doing? In 2007 you guys came to the Pinkpopfestival in the Netherlands. When I heard about it I immediately bought a ticket β€˜cause I was waiting for about seven years for LP to come to my country. I was so happy and exited to finally see you guys and it was more than an awesome performance. I will never forget it.. But now my question; when will you give a full concert over here β€˜cause I’m always waiting and hoping that you guys are coming but you never do.. Why? I really hope that you will consider coming to the Netherlands a bit more often. And even if you don’t I will always love you guys! Big kiss for everyone.. Greetz, your big fan Diana.

  18. RachaelLP on July 20, 2009 at 7:33 am

What the hell is that. Jesus! There’s a lot to be said for a stripped down show though, haha.

  19. lalahlp on July 20, 2009 at 6:21 am

  21. Wotur11 on July 20, 2009 at 5:03 am

amazing stage!! U2 deserves to be said to have that after payin so much money :]] but i dont like U2 😐 the songs seem not fit me much… anyway it’s cool to hear that you and Dave havin wonderful time ;;)

  22. Jellyfish on July 20, 2009 at 4:03 am

Nice stage but Linkin Park live is much better than U2 live !!

  23. SavanaZero on July 20, 2009 at 3:27 am

A friend of mine was in Berlin too and he said that the show was absolutely sick and that U2 are still rocking like crazy.
Plus the stage is really amazing.

  28. Dori on July 19, 2009 at 6:21 pm

sweet!!! Where’d they play? The stage looks amazing!!

PS. Can’t believe you guys are playing on the same bill as Tool!!!!!

  29. Elliot_aka_MC_Eli on July 19, 2009 at 5:45 pm

I think this goes with your glorious exhibit theme, but i was wondering…. as a popular musician, how do you go to concerts? Do you wait in line with everybody else? do you get special treatment? Do you get bothered? I’ve always wondered what it is like to be a a celebrity and want to go to a concert.

  30. lufluf on July 19, 2009 at 5:35 pm

well that looks amazing BUT I was in LP concert almost 4 hours ago and it was AMAZING! Thank you very much for this beautiful night and also for the meet and greet! we really appreciated it. Hopefully you will come again soon!

P.S. Personally I also think that U2 is a great band but also Δ°stanbul is a really beautiful city so you should go some places before you leave like Joe did πŸ™‚

  31. numbrocker02 on July 19, 2009 at 5:18 pm

That really is a ridiculous stage. 25 mil. o.O Wow. You might have gotten this but I couldn’t help but post it again. Really beautiful LP art. Even though its bennoda a lot of people just need to ignore it and see her amazing artwork.

  32. breakthen on July 19, 2009 at 4:53 pm

Hey Mike, hope you had a good time here in Berlin!

I know I’m being fatuous, but if you guys return to the city and need a guide, I’d be happy to help out! Yeah, my chances are kind of slim, but it’d be just so cool to show you round. πŸ˜€ You guys would also be nice to study, because I study the US at university. If you – against all odds – are interested, send me an email to

It’d be ridiculous if you really did answer πŸ˜€

  33. ninguem on July 19, 2009 at 4:45 pm

this stage is pretty ridiculous, seems the stage of pop mart tour in 98
i liked more the stage of vertigo tour, that was awesome, i have one dvd from 2005 in chicago and is pretty good, you could have this one right?
enjoy for me in europe bye and good night

  34. soyuneik on July 19, 2009 at 4:13 pm

What a nostalgic scene. I wonder if they’d let me hitch a ride.
Wait a minute, thats no space bug that’s an onion from Pikmin! So glorius…
Somehow I can’t imagine you two being able to sit anywhere without people trying to feast on your flesh. You can tell me, you can teleport right?

  35. murry on July 19, 2009 at 2:50 pm

Dayum. They’re playing on the campus of my alma mater in October and I didn’t buy tickets. I’m going to have to find a way to go now, because that looks amazing.

  36. lpsweet24 on July 19, 2009 at 1:15 pm

I love u2! jezzzzz thats a lot of money for a stage. but i think u2 can pull it off with all the money they make haha. I bet the concert was amazing πŸ™‚

  37. PankakeMunky on July 19, 2009 at 12:23 pm

that’s a pretty crazy set. now all U2 needs are rocket fuel and some explosions and they can be better than what madonna cooked up for her tour. their set will be out of the world. sorry i had to insert a terrible joke here

  38. Madlen on July 19, 2009 at 11:28 am

That looks so awesome but still 25 million for that?It seems like a little too much…Was that in Berlin? It’s cool that you guys get to go to concerts when you’re on tour:D

  39. ShadowerLiltani on July 19, 2009 at 11:24 am

Beam me up Scottie! Wow, 25 million dollars, and they spent it on a stupid looking stage like that? Why don’t they put that money to better use, since they are so into Live Earth and all. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad if the green and orange things weren’t there. In any case, LP’s stage set at the Madison Square Garden show was so much cooler.

  40. natalia_spain on July 19, 2009 at 11:05 am

Mike, I think the first concert of the tour was not in Pohenix, but was at the Camp Nou in Barcelona, Spain(30-06-2009). Even the Catalans were sued for making noise … jaja
this is a video from the concert in Barcelona………….

  41. Maaark on July 19, 2009 at 10:59 am

The stage’s got an interesting looking, but they spent too much money. I mean 25 Million? They’re free to do whatever they want with their money, but I still think it’s a lot to be spending only on their stage.

Did you have fun? I can see the setlist wasn’t too short and that’s great. It sucks I’m not a big U2 fan tho. And you’re about to go Turkey for the first LP concert of the year, am I right? Hope you have fun! We’re still waiting you in Brazil! πŸ™‚

Take care Mike, have a nice Sunday (I’m sure you will).

  42. LcatP on July 19, 2009 at 10:53 am

Lay off with the “missus” guys… I don’t even think that’s them, it looks like a pic mike took with his iPhone…
anyways, the stage is pretty interesting/ cool looking. 25 million is kind of a lot to be spending on their stage but hey.. whatever they want to do with it. But that’s cool that you and Phoenix got to go to U2’s concert.

  43. luckyluck on July 19, 2009 at 10:21 am

LPmadman got the poin !! for $25 Million stage that set list is suck , too bloody short !! yeah whatever .. good luck for ur show dude ..!

  45. gilovesmike on July 19, 2009 at 8:37 am

that stage is very weird, but itΒ΄s grate Β΄cos is in the midle of the stadium and you can use all the space around.
I want to be there at your first concert guys.

  46. Eddie on July 19, 2009 at 8:04 am

You’re right, it looks like a space bug…. what is this???? I agree with the video screens! Hope you have too at your concerts! πŸ™‚ Btw Nine Inch Nails today in Athens, Greece!!! My house is 10 minutes away from the NIN concert avenue!!! Ah, I remembered LP Wish cover!!! It was awesome!!!! Have fun at your first concert of the LP tour, and see you soon in 2 days!!!! i’m wondering… I’don’t think mr.mike read ours comments. I like linkin music but i think mike haven’t time or he don’t want posting a comments to us “regular people”. Sometimes i’m wondering “MS” it’s mrr. mike or some guy who only taking care of this site :(. Maybe i’m wrong and sceptic but are you really think mr. mike will answer on any of ours comments ? If i were mr. mike… hmm i think he hasn’t time for poppycocks like writing on site.

thanks mike! so this means you’re already in germany πŸ˜‰ good to know! can’t wait to see you in stuttgart in a few days.
btw, U2 also brought some fans to stage, performing with them “angel of harlem” which i think was a fantastic idea! maybe something to consider for a LP gig, too? πŸ˜‰ check it out – i think they did just great:

  50. antje on July 19, 2009 at 7:15 am

No Mike, you are kidding me????Last night? Is this the Olympiastadion in Berlin! You and Phoenix were here? Good to know…now a day later… πŸ˜‰ A month go I’ve seen Depeche Mode there. It was awesome.

Still it must be refreshing to go and see other big bands play.

  53. _Bianca_ on July 19, 2009 at 6:50 am

That stage looks like my grandma’s juicer…

  54. LPmadman on July 19, 2009 at 6:29 am

U2 are the greatest band on the planet. but $25 Million stage?? super waste show and the set list looks kind of short to me.Come on boys That shit is just good enough for playing in front of good sista in a chapel, not in a stadium! but at least they have β€œUltraviolet” !! One of my all-time favorites, btw is that u and ur missus !! hehe luv it ! ( I search,my ‘hot missus’ too, but it seems she is not give a comment yet , damn !!)

  55. Elliandria on July 19, 2009 at 6:08 am

Whoa, that is a crazy stage. Reminds me of something out of Starship Troopers.

  56. lpdu78 on July 19, 2009 at 6:07 am

    Today…first of your shows in 2009…and it’s my birthday (I’m 18 now) !!!!! It’s a fucking nice present =D

By the way, U2 is not exactly my cup of tea, I personally prefer bands like Tears For Fears and Depeche Mode in the genre Soft Rock/New Wave/…

  61. YuN_RoCks on July 19, 2009 at 5:12 am

hahaha OMG that stage is AWFUL! what a waste of money.. PS. where you really sitting there like a normal guy? I mean, you ARE a normal guy, but..didn’t anyone came to say Hi or get an autograph?!

  62. KOBSHI on July 19, 2009 at 5:12 am

It’s truly beautiful, building a special feature stage is quite common in Japan, it helps people to flung themself into the concert. πŸ™‚ And I’m glad you still keep updating your blog during tour period. Good Show man. See ya after a month in Macao!

  63. Stef_No_Mercy on July 19, 2009 at 5:07 am

Thats nice!Hope you guys had a great time!

  64. ArtMsh on July 19, 2009 at 5:07 am

Cool, tho the stage does look like a giant space bug or something…
Good luck on your tour :)! to bad i can’t go cuz your not coming to my country but no matter i’ll still see u someday…
And what about your new album by gathering all the information together i guess it’s gonna sound something like HT + hip hop and a modern sound so i think it’s gonna be something like Nobody’s listening with a modern sound + some beats and a (lighter sound maybe).
Is it going to sound anything like it, Mike?
and anyone else that i don’t know that smokes in the band…
    K good luck ya’ll ^^

  65. Lvix on July 19, 2009 at 4:54 am

  67. LinkinNessa on July 19, 2009 at 4:29 am

Wow !!! Have you ever heard of the band “Dream Theater”? Awesome music, they just dropped their new album “Black Clouds And Silver Linings”. You should listen to a song of them, I’m sure you’re impressed! πŸ˜‰

  68. lpcrazygirl on July 19, 2009 at 4:13 am

    That’s cool.
I like U2 and I bought their new album and I think it’s pretty good.
When they play in Germany, Gelsenkirchen I hope the roof of the “Veltins Arena” is open, so that I can listen to the concert, because I live right next to this arena πŸ™‚
