Home from Tour

August 18, 2009

Eleven days to go until Glorious Excess (Dies) opens here in L.A. I just got home from our “world lap” as Dave called it…We circled the globe in about 5 weeks, finishing with the show here in Pomona this weekend, and I’ve been putting the final touches on the art show via email and expensive international call 🙂 It’s been tough, but I think everything is coming together.

I don’t want to tell the story of the show before you see any art, but here’s an idea of what to expect: in the first show, our star character exploded onto the scene. He was violent, filthy rich, and world-famous. I hoped to start conversations with the work–not just critique our obsession with fame, money, and stardom. I hope you guys also saw a sense of humor there, in my effort to figure out what I thought about celebrity, spending time on both the inside and out.

In this new show, our “star” completely implodes. He begins the show as an overblown superstar, and works his way to a psychadelic, fame-induced nirvana. The end will be up to you to interpret.

I’ll be doing coverage of the show here, so for those of you who are out of town, you’ll get a taste of what it’s like. For those that can make it…see you there.

PS: on an ironic note, Michael Jackson’s birthday was August 29th–the same day as the opening.

interesting how you post a pic of all the tabloids on MJ. Its hard to even get away from it unless your watching local news. Wouldn’t surprise me if you added sum MJ in there in GE (Dies).
Glad to hear you & LP made it home safely. Well off to catch up on more of your posts…running a little behind since work has been busy here lately. Lets just say stress here is starting to effect me physically. hummm meditate. : )

  2. TheLPFreak on August 20, 2009 at 2:04 pm

when i heard it i was really shocked..its not my style of music that he did but some of them r good like thriller, billy jean, bad, beat it…he was a very very good artist but its not my style i love lp style..i can also say rock, alternative rock, crossover, ..u know waht i mean..XD ly guys..xD

  3. rockermeg on August 20, 2009 at 7:53 am

Ahr, wish I could see it…
    Ha, that is ironic

  4. Febe on August 20, 2009 at 4:03 am

What did ya mean when you said “on an ironic note” about MJ? It might be a stupid question but my english isn’t perfect at all times. I loooooove Michaeeel Jacksooon. I grew up with him. Well I’m 16 now, but I was a fan since I was maybe 3 years old. And Mikeeee Shinoda.. Come to Belgiuuum with your Glorious art, I wanna seeee it, but I can’t afford to go to LA 😦

  5. Dori on August 20, 2009 at 12:20 am

haha, you read what I posted about MJ’s b-day! Ok, maybe you already knew it, too… lol Anyway, I dunno if u caught the irony here too, but the collage graphic for this blog post has a bunch of magazines with his face on it, AND you mentioned his birthday in conjunction with the opening of your show! I’m sure you caught that tho

Home From War…Not dead yet, not done yet. Jux interview was dope. My “identities” are merely facets of my full personality.
I will stand up for someone I don’t know. I am more selfless than selfish. More honest than not. Online or Offline. BB Soon

Hey Mike (hopefully you’ll see this even though it’s not your most recent post),
I’m a freshmen at NC State right now majoring in Art + Design, and I have this online class I just started. One of my assignments was to post an entry about an upcoming art exhibition, so I did Glorious Excess (Dies) :]. My teacher then sent me an email asking if I knew you personally (LOL) and if you would be able to share anything about the art show on the website.
Anyway, if you want/have time in your busy schedule, the website is here: https://wp.delta.ncsu.edu/digitalimaging/
It would be really cool if you did 😀 Thanks!

  9. tinkerbella26 on August 19, 2009 at 5:33 pm

Mike, will you be presenting your artwork elsewhere(in the states)????

  10. Madlen on August 19, 2009 at 5:05 pm

Can’t wait to see the new pieces:DHonestly, you totally changed my perspective and point of view with your art work…it really made me look into the celebrity culture in a different way.I’m really excited about the book too:DWhat a coincidence about Michael Jackson’s birthday…I guess he can too relate to your work.RIP Michael!Anyway I’m pumped for the show and since I’m so far away I’ll be waiting for pictures and stuff:D

  11. noidea on August 19, 2009 at 3:29 pm

When I saw the date as the opening I think the same thing. That’s Michael Jackson’s birthday…..What a coincidence.
Thanks for the information about the show although LA is way too far. haha

Michael Jackson’s whole life is just a tragedy. He is the legend and one of the greatest artist of the history. Unfortunately he died because of all the media crap. His achievements and his contibutions to the world deserved way more.
I feel sad I never get the changce to see him perform live since I was too young. However, I really enjoy his music. Maybe you should do a mixtape of MJ. Hope he can finally rest in peace now.

  12. Anstice on August 19, 2009 at 3:07 pm

Speaking of GLXS, Mike; I work as a journalist for a blog. We’re planning to do a piece on GLXS as it comes to a close and we have a favor to ask of you. If you’d take the time, we’d appreciate it if you could take a look at this and think it over: http://lnk.ms/09Vby Thank you in advance =)

  13. Full_Metal_Ninja on August 19, 2009 at 2:55 pm

    Can’t wait!

  14. torch95 on August 19, 2009 at 1:01 pm

Its Funny we live in a soicety that states we need to dress, live, walk, or even talk in a certain way.If we do not come from a certain college, or hang-out with the “Cool Crowd”, then we are not cool. When can we measure a person not by where he is from or what he drives, or what he wears, but what he has accomplished in life and has given back. Only then we can honestly measure a person for there persona. A wise person once stated ” If you sort with the Eagles you Fly with the Eagles, if you sort with the leaches you become one”. Mike i think what you and your Faimlia at “Linkin Park”, have done great deeds, and continue to bring great music. See you August 29th..hopefully to meet & Greet.

  15. NJMikai on August 19, 2009 at 12:45 pm

Yeah 🙂 Numerology – MJ was one of the biggest celebrities.

  16. Kalini on August 19, 2009 at 12:00 pm

“I’ll be doing coverage of the show here, so for those of you who are out of town, you’ll get a taste of what it’s like”. Weren’t you the one who recently said “there’s nothing like seeing the art in person”? Yeah, very ironic… Michael Jackson was one of those incredibly talented songwriters, who truly deserved to be called a celebrity! K

  17. colinreid on August 19, 2009 at 11:49 am

    Awesome. Can’t wait ( =.
Mike see for POA on your US show?

(Voice gets higher) And drop right back! in the cut over basement tracks, rap stack got you back in the sub black rewind that! Forfeit the game before somebody else takes and so on…I think this could work out ( = hope you do this one Mike!

  21. Maaark on August 19, 2009 at 8:35 am

Hey Mike! I’m glad you’ll be covering it for the people who can’t go (like me). Thank you for giving us an idea of what to expect. I’m sure everyone wil love it, you’re a great artist!

Oh yea, about the ironic note, it’s ironic for sure… HAHA! But seriously, when you think about celebrities, it’s impossible not to think about Michael Jackson. That’s an interesting coincidence.

Take care man, have a nice week and good luck with the Art Show!

  22. TiffTiff33LP on August 19, 2009 at 8:23 am

My mom really loved Michael Jackson,he was her all time favorite.Im just glad that I knew who he was.Thats cool that you will be doing coverage of the art show for the people who cant make it,thanks for that I cant come,I live in the sunshine state Flo-rida.LOL!!!!!^_^

  23. cuz on August 19, 2009 at 7:38 am

Can’t wait to see the art. So sad about Michael Jackson’s death. I grew up on his music. Didn’t even unite it to your art show.

  24. xXLEOXx on August 19, 2009 at 7:15 am

I´m so sad, that I can´t see your GLXS (Dies) show! :´(
I wish that I could live in LA, too…but NO…. I have to live in the middle of nowhere in Germany! >.< ”
Well.. but I´m happy for you that you are home now! Take care, Mike! And good luck for your awesome show! ♥ Leo

  27. lovableFreak on August 19, 2009 at 6:40 am

LOL. i’d totally support the idea benita had some posts below me. xD well, i’m so sad being so far away so that i can’t be there… this coincidence with MJ’s birthday is so great. you know, cause now you have people thinking about a connection between both events and they’ll see, that you’re so right with what you’re saying through your art about this celeb-stuff… and to the tour… wow, it’s over now. i remember looking forward so badly to seeing you guys live in Gräfenhainichen/Ferropolis and now, it’s over. and i wanna thank you again for the great show and for coming here. hope, you’re coming back soon (with the new album. hehe. LOL) take care. peace. ❤ 🙂

  28. msgirl on August 19, 2009 at 6:24 am

  29. Elmira on August 19, 2009 at 5:46 am

Mike here are some lyrics about life. This poem wrote my sister Zhanna. May be u can use this text for one of your song=))))
Keep waiting even if it’s hard Or if you feel there is no sense. Keep playing on your own part If others think you are past tense. Keep being every time yourself If others think that you have lost. Just leave your fears on dusty shelf.
If you have thoughts just let them post. Keep thinking on your own way. Don’t try to be like all the rest. Don’t cry, don’t suffer, do not stay – Life is not game not either test. Don’t ask, don’t beg, don’t be afraid Of changes coming in your life. And don’t regret attempts you’ve made. Forget the useless stupid stuff. 11.08.2009

  30. BENITA on August 19, 2009 at 5:26 am

  34. ThePrincess on August 19, 2009 at 3:24 am

I’m happy to hear that you are at home now 🙂 ..anyway I’ll be in LA on 25th so at this time I’m a bit busy preparing my departure . well, although there was a time to breathe but still, I need to convince myself that I really deserve to be there ( I didn’t mean to over acting but I have to violate my oath that I held for almost 9 years and I’m totally not ready !! yeah , its scare me a little LOL ) .. thanks for update Mike and have fun at Pomona !!

  35. lucky_cat on August 19, 2009 at 2:20 am

I’m glad you mention that … I always felt it is a strange cooccurrence, the tide of events with M. Jackson and the theme of your art show … I just found it is difficult, because in one case it’s an imaginary character, in the other case it’s a real person. This coincidence is weird though!

  36. navee on August 19, 2009 at 2:09 am

my ironic though: my friend chuy and i wet to luch yesterday and we were listening all day to michel jacksons songs 🙂 can’t to see the artshow, catch you up in pomona, hopeto meet you there

  37. abbykulyde on August 19, 2009 at 1:21 am

i know you’re happy back home, it’s been quite a tiring 5 week-world lap you had guys, better take a R&R mike..
i can feel that you are very excited on your art show. TRUE that it is ironic to have same date of MICHAEL Jackson’s birthday to the opening of MICHAEL Shinoda’s art show, LOL!

thanks for giving time updating us on GLXS, (esp to us who cannot attend).. we’ll be watching for your posts!

  38. NOSNORB on August 19, 2009 at 1:13 am

Hey Mike, let me just say I’m a BIG fan of your artwork. Good luck with the show. It’s pretty ironic how the main character of your artwork resembles the King Of Pop in so many ways. Our fascination with pop culture never seems to fade away. I know you’re probably way too busy to do so, but I miss your awesome mixtapes. You should should do some kind of Michael Jackson mixtape/mashup. That’d be awesome!

  39. KATHYxx on August 19, 2009 at 12:59 am

It’s late right now in california, but I’m feeling as if I have deja vu.

Time goes by so fast! It was like yesterday when you guys rocked here in Greece…memories come back again… Thx in advance for covering the show and everything for us in cyberspace! 😛 Well, I believe that in some way your character is gonna die but i’ll wait and see hehe^^ Speaking of GED you said something about a video/documentary of the show. I can’t wait to see that one too! 😀

Oh yeah very ironic! You’re so right! You even have the same name! OMLP! 😛

PS. It’s always good to be back home even from a (kinda) short but sweet tour, right? 😉

  42. Aline on August 19, 2009 at 12:20 am

It seems like your “star” resembles M. Jackson =)
Very happy for you! For opening! You made it!

  43. firefighter465ph on August 19, 2009 at 12:02 am

    you’re right…very ironic!
well, the story is very interesting and different. I don’t have a lot of experience of that kind of art show (because i have some experience in photography shows because of my uncle).
good luck with the art show and congratulations, you are a great artist. If you can (not only Mike, of course all the LP’s fans) please visit http://www.imagenesdelaresistencia.cl …my uncle’s website (his photography show, he made it during the Chilean summer and we don’t know if he will go to the U.S with the same art work, we are waiting for some news ;)) Bye guys!!

  44. zahra on August 18, 2009 at 11:49 pm

    Well then i cant wait!…….and thanx 4 having this site ,again,its awesome!………uuuuuuuuuugh that is ironic!X)..btw welcome home!/////have a gr8 day ;D

  45. lp_fm_fan on August 18, 2009 at 10:54 pm

I wish I could go! If ONLY the art show opened earlier in the summer, like maybe early August, lol. I’m gonna already start school this Monday there is no way I could go to LA and back for school, plus it’d be a waste of money. But thank you so much for doing a coverage at least I’ll see something! Plus, check out http://www.mikeshinodaclan.co.nr a new site that my friend and I launched. 🙂

    Welcome home! 😀

  48. Curiosa on August 18, 2009 at 10:32 pm

Nice 2 here u made it home safely. 🙂 Hmm…definitely something for me to think about. Yes, that is a bit ironic. Thanks for the info Mike. 🙂 Oh I know I’ll see you there, not sure you’ll see me though. 😉 lol Have a good night. Oh & about people acting differently on the web, unfortunately for you when it comes to me, what you see is what you get. 😛 But you’re right. The majority of people do act differently on the web. Take care. 🙂
