Looks like it’s conference week for me (ha). Today, Google announced their new music search function, and I was invited to speak on a panel regarding the new function, what it means for the fan (like us) who wants to find and purchase new music. I met and spoke with a handful of really smart, really fun peeps (shouts out to Bill, Courtney, Ali, RJ and all the awesome Google staff).
What I think most of you will be interested to know is that Google is rolling this function out in the U.S. right now. When you search for new music, you will immediately see a few options of songs to play, plus links to the artists tour dates and purchase options. Knowing how much we all hate clicking on a dozen things to get to the place we want, this is a welcome improvement (now all I need to do is finally get our tech department to do the same with our linkinpark.com, LPU, and LPN login).
Here’s the info from their blog, and a picture from the event. Keep an eye out online, as there will be some performances–including one by Dead By Sunrise.

PS: Ironic that Mos Def was on the panel, since I just posted his BET performance:

EDIT: I almost forgot…HUGE thank you to OneRepublic for letting me eat some of their In N Out burgers. Seriously. A life saver.
Sometimes, the people who put an award show together just simply get it right. This was amazing. Thanks to Charlie Bravo for the link.

It may be the best invitation I’ve ever received: I’ve been asked to speak at the “140 Character Conference,” a public conference all about TWITTER!
The conference is today. According to their site http://140conf.com/, the conference is about “the effects of real-time internet on business.” I can speak on that; maybe they just want to hear my take. Then again, maybe there’s another, clandestine plot brewing. Maybe they want to brainwash or convert me. Or maybe Phoenix is planning to assassinate me.
Screw it. I’ll be attending, some time around 4pm. And just in case, maybe I should find myself some stylish bulletproof attire.
Look for tweets about it…and spell my name right, fools: #m_shinoda

Here’s the whole DoodleBrain piece, shown for the first time! It will be on display at LeVine through November 21. Not sure if it sold yet–if you’re interested, contact the gallery. Info at the link below.
Here’s a link to the rest of the show:

I’m headed to NYC for the private opening of “True Self” at Jonathan Levine. Above is a small detail of the piece I did…Gary asked each artist to do a piece that represents themselves in some way, although not necessarily a self-portrait. Mine is a little bit like a painted doodle…it’s like what I would draw on a notepad next to a hotel phone if I was on a long call (except in paint instead of ballpoint ink). With that said, I called it “DoodleBrain.”
Other True Self participating artists: Adam Wallacavage, Alex Prager, Amor Muñoz, Boris Hoppek, Christian Clayton, Cleon Peterson, Dalek, Dave Cooper, David Sandlin, Deedee Cheriel, Eric White, Esther Pearl Watson, Fons Schiedon, Frieda Gossett, Gary Taxali, Gary Baseman, Gerard Dubois, Gretchen Ryan, James Jean, Jonathon Rosen, Korin Faught, Lauren Bergman, Leah Hayes, Lola, The London Police, Luke Chueh, Marion Peck, Mark Ryden, Mark Todd, Martha Rich, Mike Shinoda, Miso, Natalia Fabia, Orly Cogan, Ray Caesar, Rob Clayton, Robin VanValkenburgh, Ron English, Ryan Heshka, Ryan Jacob Smith, Shag, Shannon Freshwater, Tim Biskup, Travis Lampe. Sounds like a good show.
Opening Reception:
Saturday, October 24, 2009
7:00pm – 9:00pm

So much random stuff going on these days…here are three updates.
It’s been a busy week. Studio every day, working on new stuff. This week, I did a song where the music sounds like Santogold (or Santigold, if you like) meets Postal Service meets At The Drive In or something. Very weird…but even weirder, the vocals are crazy–I asked our engineers what they thought it sounded like, and the responses I got were things like “Peter Gabriel” and “Huey Lewis, in a really good way.” Four-part harmonies that ebb and flow with the track. I feel like I’m on drugs when I’m listening to it. It’s tentatively called “Chicken Basket.” Next week, we’re all going to get together and listen to everything and vote on stuff, to see how progress is going. I’ll let you guys know how it goes…
Secondly, another newsworthy thing: as it turns out, our LP Underground fan club is going to be friggin’ amazing this year! In case you don’t know, we always put out a CD with the club, and this year’s CD is a monster. It contains 8 previously unreleased demos from Hybrid Theory, Meteora, and Minutes To Midnight, plus a NEW, UNRELEASED LINKIN PARK SONG recorded during the MTM sessions. That’s 9 tracks in all (for LPU9, get it?). You also get a shirt, patch, guitar pick, and exclusive chances to meet the band if we’re doing a show or event in your area. LPU9 is not available yet, but info will be coming soon. You can get an idea of what this past year’s fan club offered by clicking here.
…And finally, Dead By Sunrise is out, and doing well on the charts. But more importantly, they’re playing in LA soon, which means I’ll get to go see the show. For those that missed it, here’ DBS on Letterman:

…But the best GBC info out there is this: a secret email from GBC’s manager (Dutch Tha Manager) is going around…apparently, if you “follow” them on Twitter, “fan” them on Facebook, or post their widget on your blog, they’re going to give you two more free songs. All you have to do is email Dutch and show him that you’ve done it, and they’ll send you a link to the tracks.
It looks like my boys are all grows up. They’re doing pro-level marketing, releasing a real album, and the hype is building. Best of all, they have a manager who likes to kiss porpoises. What’s not to like?
