Music For Relief: LA, Samoa, Indonesia

October 3, 2009

There is a lot going with Music For Relief right now. For those in Los Angeles, there is an event happening nearby. Here’s an update:

“Please join Music For Relief and Tree People October 17th as we work together to plant trees in Stenton Ranch Park in Sylmar, CA. In 2008 Sylmar saw two fires that burned over 35,000 acres and displaced some 50,000 people. Between 9am and 12 pm we will reforest the park with 30 trees that will provide shade, oxygen and revitalize a beautiful landscape. Take part in this rewarding experience! Register on the Tree People website by following the link and filling out the registration form. If you have any questions, please email Megan at”

But also, for those elsewhere in the world who can help, an 8.0 magnitude earthquake was followed by a series of tsunamis, affecting the Pacific islands of Samoa, Tonga and America Samoa. Pago-Pago the capitol of American Samoa was badly damaged. The death toll is currently at 146, with hundreds missing. Sixty villages have been completely destroyed. The Red Cross is reporting 15,000 people affected, with 3,000 homeless. In addition, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake hit the island of Sumatra on Wednesday followed by a 6.6 magnitude quake on Thursday causing severe damage and it is estimated that 1100 people ere killed. Accurate information on the number of people affected or displaced by the disaster is not yet available as the search and rescue effort is still underway, but it is known that in Padang alone, at least 500 homes are caved in, hospitals, schools and other buildings have collapsed.

Please visit to find a way to help.

Just to 2nd jerunia_chaz07’s comment, Typhoon Ketsana pretty much sank the Philippines. Information is also on the MFR site. MFR rules!

  3. jerunia_chaz07 on October 6, 2009 at 7:48 am

Hey Mike! I’m from the Philippines and our country was hit by typhoon ketsana, unfortunately it made Manila a wide ocean. Hundreds of people died and properties were put to ruins. please pray for the recovery of our place…

  5. Aiman on October 5, 2009 at 8:02 pm

Hey Mike, do you think you can tell us about this song?

  6. Maaark on October 5, 2009 at 6:24 pm

Hey Mike! Well, unfortunately, only the US residents can help. MFR asks either to register in a website to volunteer yourself to plant a tree or to send a message to a number (which I can’t dial, don’t know why) so you can donate 5 dollars. I love to help MFR and I always do everything I can, like spreading the word about a new cause or something like that. I’m sorry man.

Oh yeah, I’m holding right now the GLXS book. It’s great! I’m still reading it and found some interesting facts about the exhibition and stuff like that. Love it, Mike!

    Take care man!

Mike, apologies for the off-topic question. But I was wondering if you could tell me who’s fingers I can hear in the “KRWLNG” chorus? I would guess you guys mic’d up Pheonix but the sound of things, but I just have to know being a huge recording nerd πŸ˜‰

  8. Lvix on October 5, 2009 at 9:08 am

Mike, you never believe this… Today i almost died. I was hitted by a car when I was on bike. The car was so fast, when I saw him nex to me there was even no time to think: Is this the end? I didn’t stop, I just watched… Think nothing, all I remember… The car hit my bike and I flew up in the sky, made a few circles and came down with my hands in the air on my (don’t know word, stommack or something?) The first thing I did was standing up… I feeled a lot of pain, daamn… I was in shock, I looked down to my feets and I saw one of your shoes…. was gone. I looked at street and at the small river close by, no shoe. My first toughts where your shoe. Now.. I can’t walk. Greetz,Lode

If you won the lottery, what would you do with the money? I wonder if it’s like they all plan to donate 95% of it and end up saying ‘eff it’ in the end? Or maybe all the winners aren’t the compassionate types? I wonder if that’s another “balance” thing? The only lottery winner I heard of spent 45 Million in 24 hours. He was probably comparable to the character in your paintings.(sex/drgs) I guess this is me touching base with human apathy. Your the only one I know that seems to care enough to even mention the tragedies outside the US….Halfway down sunset strip, on the left if Suru is on your right, there is a man scrunched up with a shopping cart. He could really use a pair of shoes.

Today I donated money for the typhoon Ketsana recovery. It’s very important to me since I have friends in SE Asia. I really hope many people will donate some money. Every dollar can help.

  13. TiPat on October 4, 2009 at 6:48 pm

Hey Mike! I’m really happy to see that my fav band helps the world. I’ll surely make a donation soon. I know it’s off topic, but I had an idea today for the next album. I don’t know if you’ve planned to do some collab for the next album, but I think it can be cool if you guys could do a song with M.Shadows, the singer from Avenged Sevenfold. I don’t know if you will read this, but I hope that if you guys do, you would think about it. A reply will be perfect, but I know you’re busy and you can’t reply to every comments.

Anyway, thanks. By the way, sorry for my english, it’s because I speak french

    Ps’ God Bless you πŸ™‚

  33. Lynnie on October 4, 2009 at 3:54 am

I can’t help, and it sucks. I have no money, myself, and as I’m in the UK the MFR organisation doesn’t quite reach – which is a shame – I’d love to attend the event.
Who knows, in a few years when I’m living in LA myself, I might just be able to do something about it.
Seriously… what is going on with the world, these days?
    Have a nice day, Mike.

  37. Liquorice on October 4, 2009 at 1:29 am

It’s awesome to see you helping the affected areas. As a Kiwi (we were also under tsunami warnings), Samoa getting hit was close to home for us. More Samoans live here in New Zealand than in Samoa, and most Kiwis are affected directly or know someone who is. So a BIG thank you for helping our Samoan cousins. Kia Kaha.

  38. ThePrincess on October 4, 2009 at 12:31 am

Even though I was in a different area but still this is a very painful disaster for my country , I personally want to say thank you and tremendous respect for your concern.. Thank you so much MFR , ( Oh God , I am crying now lol ! ) .. and again TERIMA KASIH BANYAK MIKE πŸ™‚ I really appreciate that !! ..
