Digidesign / ProTools rant

December 4, 2009

I don’t rant often, but this particular note deserves it. I’ll write this while the studio computer is restarting. Here’s the deal. I hope you guys at Digidesign are reading.

ProTools is friggin crashing…every time I zoom in too far.

What?

I can’t zoom?

The engineers and I have tried to hunt down the root of this problem (online) for a month. We haven’t come up with anything. We then called the Digidesign artist relations team, who have told us 3 times “OK, give us a time when you guys will be in the studio, and we’ll call you.” They flake. Every time. Ethan (our engineer) asked if we could call them. “No, because we need a tech on the phone…” And so on.

To be fair, I know these guys are busy actually fixing this bug…but this is industry-standard software. Your average ProTools rig is about $30-50,000.00. I want to be able to, um…zoom. I hear that Logic and Cubase both zoom in. Even Garage Band zooms in, and that came free with my computer.

And after I did lockjaw and helped them promote PT8…and the NAMM appearance…and tell everyone how awesome their stuff is, maybe they could at least give a fella a call back.

Wow, that really sucks Mike. Well, fortunately, I don’t use that stuff.. but I hope that you will figure out the problem, and get to zoom in again!

  2. Kleck on April 14, 2010 at 8:44 am

Wow, that sucks Mike. I have Pro Tools LE 8, and I’ve had a lot of problems with it. Granted, it’s the LE version and sucks the power out of my computer, causing it to skip and freeze and generally screw up. So I’ve been sticking to Propellerhead Reason 4 (love that program) until I need to lay down some guitar/ bass tracks. I’ve been looking into the Pod XT Live, however, and think I want to pick one up before I do record guitar. That thing seems like a good investment.

I guess in hindsight, the fault is my own. I can never have just one thing running on my computer at a time, and I’m usually pretty hard on my hardware. I’m lucky my computer has lasted this long!

I personally believe that protools is overrated, yeah, its supposed to be “The best”, but lets face it, I have Reason 4 and adobe audition and have thus far been able to make good quality mixes. the fact that protools crashes if you try to zoom in doesnt really suprise me at all

  5. manurung on December 16, 2009 at 10:49 pm

wow,,,mike, you are the most awesomest

  6. D3lta on December 10, 2009 at 2:06 pm

My PT8 kept crashing because of the waves package I was using…which is really strange because it wasn’t doing that on my old studio machine. And it didn’t even crash all of the time. It’s not a huge loss though, I really only used their reverbs and delays. I’ll find some more.

  7. Full_Metal_Ninja on December 10, 2009 at 11:12 am

wow.. even big rockstars are in the mercy of tech support

  8. Digidesign on December 9, 2009 at 3:47 pm

Digidesign Tech Support contacted Mike when someone alerted us to this post, so we’re on it. Thanks to ELLZ for pointing them to the crash log since that could help narrow down the cause.

  9. YuN_RoCks on December 8, 2009 at 11:09 am

That’s right bro!! lol You’re right and I absolutely believe that they should act more professionally. Good luck with that!

  10. davidkyoku on December 8, 2009 at 9:29 am

I hope it has solution soon, good luck, we’re waiting to hear the new stuff thanks to that pro tools 😛

  11. Nikki_LPforever on December 7, 2009 at 11:57 pm

Ahh that really sucks! Hope they fix it for u soon ! Good luck =) x

  12. Ellz on December 7, 2009 at 11:38 am

Have you tried looking at your crash-report for Protools? It should be able to tell you specifically what’s causing the app to crash… i.e. maybe the zooming function crashed due to a plug-in or effect that’s installed. That’s usually the cause but hopefully Digidesigns will hit you guys back up soon.

  13. Sintia on December 7, 2009 at 9:38 am

So you can zoom in but not too far? That doesn’t make sense. Do they hav a zoom in limit or sumtin? I agree with every1 on here. You have a job to do but its delaying due to technical difficulties..really!? Ther goin 2B alot of angry fans bcuz of Digidesign extremely bad customer service, if that’s wat it shouild be called. With your support & promo of PT8 with no callback, you may hav to take up KATHYxx offer. haha Like my dad says “You don’t like what ppl are doing then do it yourself” You may have to learn some IT Mike. I’m sure you’ll find a way to make it work.

    ………………………………………………………… Digidesign team do something!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. lostwithoutwings on December 6, 2009 at 10:59 pm

if you’re taking suggestions for the redesign, your website should have a like button. facebook has ruined us. lol. maybe that just started with digg… anyway, its kinda mind blowing to hear professionals with 100k + equipment cant get technical support on the phone either. good luck though. -jenn

  16. SteppinRazor on December 6, 2009 at 8:40 pm

I’ve gotta agree with ANALOGGIRL – you’re really polite about your complaints and I bet you’re very frustrated too!
    Admirable.

But while we’re on the subject of complaints, this site has been acting a bit sketchy lately. About every other time I try to visit, I’ve gotta refresh the page a few times before it’ll stop saying the page doesn’t exist. It tends to load a text only version every once in a while too. I know it isn’t the computers, browsers or servers I’ve been using though.
Could this be result of the redesigning process you’ve previously mentioned?
Plus, does anyone know if/how I can turn off the background music?

  17. analoggirl on December 6, 2009 at 6:27 pm

I like how you managed to sound congenial in your rant. lol Anyway, I hope the issue is resolved soon. I’m also curious to see how Digidesign responds to your blog… From a brand management perspective, I’d imagine they’d be all over you now.

  18. Madlen on December 6, 2009 at 1:10 pm

You’re absolutely right to be ranting about it…I do hope that they get the problem fixed. It sucks when people avoid doing the job that they get paid to do…Anyway I wish you luck with that.

  19. rockermeg on December 6, 2009 at 11:35 am

    Ahh man…suckish
Wahey. That’s why we use Logic at our school 😉
    Although I would love ProTools….
    Hope that gets sorted

i hope they fix it – otherwise i will complete this track for youtube 🙂

  21. Curiosa on December 6, 2009 at 12:06 am

lol I think you’re allowed to rant. 😉 lol Yeah, IT always seems 2 have a problem w/calling people back or being around when u need them. rolls eyes or in my case (being a girl) trying 2 tell u bull just to avoid trying 2 figure it out. At least until they realize I know enough about computers to not believe them. It’s gr8 having friends who are IT cause I’ve always learned from them. 😉 Hope ur having a good weekend. 🙂

  22. Ramiz209 on December 5, 2009 at 8:22 pm

You should really look into Magix software
i bet it works 10x better than pro tools

i have like 5 pro tool disks and haven’t even used them because ive been busy with magix

and yes you CAN zoom in with magix lol

  23. shu on December 5, 2009 at 7:21 pm

How come theycan’t give a brotha a call? That’s just wrong man

  24. linkinladie328 on December 5, 2009 at 4:14 pm

    “Even Garage Band zooms in”

I literally laughed out loud when I read that.

  26. DrywallTherapy on December 5, 2009 at 4:04 pm

Every other production suite can zoom in w/o problems…thats messed up. Maybe you should downgrade!

  27. ThePrincess on December 5, 2009 at 3:54 pm

LOL .. You’re Awesome Mike 😉 .. Anyway , honestly I don’t quite understand about The Pro tools Workings System , but I’m sure these Zoom Problem will be handled properly !

Thanks for the update and Have A Nice Weekend !!

Hey, i found this thread http://duc.digidesign.com/showthread.php?t=253308&goto=nextoldest and the guy how did the last comment seams to have a solution, at least that’s what he says.. i know i’m a nood on this issue and you already said that you’re looking for it online so propably you have came across it..

  30. lynndarwinharris on December 5, 2009 at 12:36 pm

I hope you get this fixed soon. I know this is frustrating, you have a job to do and the freaking system won’t work. Yep, I deal with that almost daily. I feel your pain, I work in an office and my boss depends on me to fix some technical problems and it is terribly frustrating to wait on a call back from tech support 😦

  31. _Constantine_ on December 5, 2009 at 12:02 pm

Hey Mike, I guess you’ve already checked the Digi Forums/Support, but here are two threads that people having the same problem made and are asking for a solution from the Digi guys.

This has nothing to do with this post, but I was wondering about this poster:

    (The one in the center)
I’ve had this poster since PR 2007, it was up at the venue a week before PR came. I was wondering who the artist is? I mean- I can understand the one to the right of it because even the commercials had similar characters like that. But a bear’s head exploding and bombs and a bunny and green cat thing? It confused me but I still love it.. I have two other PR 07 posters I found around the venue, but they’re like the one on the right so I haven’t questioned them.

  35. Gaston on December 5, 2009 at 8:55 am

Mike, maybe isn´t the place or the time, probably you are a little pissed off because of that bug but, i don´t know where else reach you, here´s the thing i would like to ask you if you can tell me where i can find Joe´s loops because i´m in a band and we are starting doing covers (mostly of you guys) but we don´t have that, if you can tell me or if you want (and can) send it to my mail gesaone@hotmail.com i will appreciate that, and if you can´t it´s ok i know is a long shot but well… i have to try xD.

Excuse me if my english sucks i´m from Argentina and my English is very rusty right now xD.
By the way… hope your new album kick ass like M2M 😉

    Well take care Mike…

  36. Eibx on December 5, 2009 at 8:39 am

I think Digidesign didn’t know they were dealing with a Blogger.

  37. Metal_Value on December 5, 2009 at 8:29 am

That’s pretty awful, you’re right I use Logic and Cubase in my music tech college course and they do zoom in ;D

Couldn’t you surely report this issue to your record company Warner Bros: and say that it’s preventing you from furthering your (Their) album’s progress which in turn is a problem for them as well? I’m sure they’d want it sorted as well as you do.

But you’re right it’s a complete joke that the studio pays thousands for the software and hardware used to run it and it’s having a stupid issue like zooming in and crashing your software =/

Well I sure hope it gets fixed soon mike, good luck !

  38. cincybmxlpfreak on December 5, 2009 at 7:57 am

Damn, Mike. That’s not good. Especially since you’ve been a longtime supporter of ProTools. I mean…I have the free online software, Audacity, and even THAT zooms in pretty damn far. I hope they fix the problem because it would suck to have the new LP album not be as good as it could be just because some jerks at Digidesign don’t wanna call you back. Good luck, man.

  39. UltimateShadow on December 5, 2009 at 7:52 am

yeah yeah bugs that bug us 😛 try mixcraft is cheap is great and no bugs 😀
mixcraft and a free program call audacity put together on my point of view make PT look like a crap. but if you use lots of line 6 stuf try RECORD for propellerheads is like having your private studio at home 😀
as a multi-instrumentalist i use Guitar Rig, Mixcraft, Record, Audacity and Guitar Pro. check this out http://www.myspace.com/returnfromtheashesband. the sound was record in less that 5 mim with mixcraft audacity and Guitar Rig “i know that sucks but is not mastered” i think this is the cheaper way to have a great sound on your home 😀
if you need any help just post it here i’ll be here cheking

    merry xmas

  40. Zerath on December 5, 2009 at 7:13 am

That gotta be kinda irritating not to be able to use a basic function haha! Im using cakewalk Sonar and you can zoom like there’s no tomorrow 🙂

  41. Obzcura on December 5, 2009 at 7:11 am

That’s such a d*** move on digi’s part! Well I’m running PT LE 8.0.1 on my PC and that never happens.
Haha, just go analog for this record then; put everything on tape!
    hmmm…..
Actually, now that I think about it, it really sounds more like a graphics card problem then a Digidesign one. Maybe try updating the drivers for the graphics card in the Mac Pro. TRY IT AND LET ME KNOW IF IT FIXES IT!

  42. KingTroy on December 5, 2009 at 6:00 am

I believe there will always be a way to repair that Crashing Protools Damage , but if You really , really , really want to be able to … Zoom , Yeah , what should I say Dude .. .. coz its your Prerogative LOL !!

  43. Vamp09 on December 5, 2009 at 4:39 am

I understand These Technical ‘ Bug ‘ Problems will interfere with the quality of your work , but this is December Dude , You know .. The Family holiday Month !! .. So I’m not sure that You’ll get a call back from the Digidesign team quickly .. well , I hope you will find another way to fix it !!

  44. miKer0cks on December 5, 2009 at 3:53 am

Ok, you may not rant a lot but you’re allowed to rant about this! They better put their asses back to work and give you a call to fix the problem or they’ll have to deal with me! I’ll fly over LA to kick their asses myself if they don’t fix my Mike’s ProTools zooming xD I’m serious LOL

  45. Ezza on December 5, 2009 at 3:36 am

uh! im running vista…i know ur pain 😦 stupid computers and then tech support that is really no help at all… hope it doesnt hold ur album up too much.. i mean i just listened to across the line on youtube and think that if thats any guide ( which its probably not) its going to kick arse!! 🙂

  46. sasummsumm on December 5, 2009 at 2:54 am

i imagine this guys from digidesign now sitting in boring meetings drinking coffee talking about something useless like christmas dinner XD.and somewhere in the company in some dark chamber in some dark cellar some practicant asks himself if he should eskalate the major error he found to someone or go home at 12.00 o clock to meet his friends 😀 na just kidding.maybe they are on short hours there?XD.and the engineers run to their boss and try to tell him that MIKE SHINODA nees his DAMN ZOOMING feature immediately but there is no time.and they are afraid to call you and tell you.:] well i’m shure that this will be fixed soon or someone in this company will die, lynched by the marketing ppl:D

Bwahaha! ::gigglesnort:: – Ok I wanted to be all serious and like, not so fan girly.. But even when you rant and we can’t see you it’s really cute! xD I can just imagine you pissed and flailing your arms around and, and.. Ok I’ll stop now.. How dare they? You seem like a pretty calm and reasonable guy, but yeah it’s your beloved ProTools we’re talking about here, so you’re allowed to rant.. 🙂 Anyways, I hope it gets fixed soon.. Take care! – Janni ❤

  50. Astat on December 5, 2009 at 1:32 am

So Pro Tools 8 has some badass MIDI capabilities…but it crashes if you zoom in too far?

Glad I convinced the guy at the studio that upgrading from 7 to 8 really wasn’t necessary! LOL.

  53. Hybr1d_7h3ory on December 4, 2009 at 11:12 pm

Long time no comment. That is rather unfortunate, you would think with it being so vastly used and being considered an industry standard that it would have been fixed during the testing. Good thing that you are not part of a world renown rock band that has power in their word and advertisement.

On another note LPU9 is quite a step up from the past several years. I can’t wait for my vinyl to come in. That was a badass addition to the package.

I hope everything works out and can’t wait for the new album.

  54. ThunderStrike on December 4, 2009 at 10:31 pm

Hmm….why don’t you guys try making the new album on Garage Band? =P But on a more serious note, I really hope those guys do something, and the next album comes quickly. Thanks a lot for LPU9 Mike!!

I would only be able to replicate with a Mac hybird. Not very helpful if its anything processor related… I did see something about Chud causing some problems and that once people uninstalled and reinstalled it, things were cool. ::devil horns:: I’d take it apart and see why. Hmm. But why would something so sophisticated crash like that…..Zoom (too much memory loaded? corrupted? error in the code?)..maybe the actually keys? Did they change them? Power? Are the power harnesses the same serial number? ..Could they need replacing. ::rubs eyes-sleepy sleepy:: I like your rants. I rant and then I feel bad a day after and delete it.

  63. ShadowerLiltani on December 4, 2009 at 9:30 pm

I was actually planning on buying PT8 in the near, distant future. Granted, I look at you as another dude in the world, cause I’m weird like that, but most people DON’T, and I don’t think those people who are ignoring you realize that. What you say effects how their product is perceived by customers. This also puts a delay on the album, which is not fair to you, and it is not fair to us , the fans, either. And they just basically owe you the same respect that they owe any other customer in this world.

  64. MobzSean1 on December 4, 2009 at 9:15 pm

Yeah , I Hope you Guys can handle it well !

  65. Celestial on December 4, 2009 at 9:06 pm

After using Pro Tools 8 for about year, I can definitely concur with this. It has absurd little ticks in it that are not quite right. I definitely do not like the fact that is no way to add folders to arrange stuff in a more organized way so I don’t have a bajillion sound tracks from Soundminer and Foley sounds in one friggin’ area. Takes a while to scroll through them all. Stuff like this, I would think is simple for a computer engineer to do, but they just seem plain lazy and uninterested in customer feedback.

  66. ShadowThanatos on December 4, 2009 at 9:06 pm

@@! If these problem won’t get fixed soon…well Mike…you just need to change the software. There is no time to waste for these freaking stupid problems. It is not worth to waste your time with these things.

I use Cubase LE4 whenever I lay bass tracks for a demo, and when it works great it’s a beautiful piece of software. When it doesn’t? I want to through it through the &#*!ing window.

I can only hope you save the tracks you record into the computer, because I can count many times I lost a track due to system/program crashes. Drives me batty.

here here Mike, good to know even the rich and famous get just as pissed by being screwed around by customer support. You should give them the ‘do you know who I am!?’ line. Then they’d get a tech on the phone. 😄

for ProTools to be this pricey, oh man! keep bugging them, as in, every time you’re in the studio.. they should work their ass up to fix this..

anyways, still hope u have a nice weekend..

I laughed so hard until i don’t realize that I had tears in Eyes .. and with our Big respect , we just want to say , You’re great Mike , seems No reason anymore for us to Not call You “ The Platinum Man who will never be shifted “ LOL !!

  83. PrincessbyDawn on December 4, 2009 at 6:43 pm

That must be annoying…and I thought that kind of problem used to happen just with us, not with known people as you, cause then they should know that things like that could happen: you let the world to know how they fail at support when its necessary. As you said, its a very expensive stuff and its a industry-standard software. Well, they were very idiot ignoring or being lazy to fix that, cause one word of you was enough to promote them but at the same level one bad word about them coming from you will have a very strong effect. Its a shame that things like that happen in every place in the world (here in Brazil hppens too). Good luck Mike. Love, Pat

Thats lame. Im a Logic fan myself, but for the amount you pay for that software it should work!!!

  85. Taigali on December 4, 2009 at 6:30 pm

Hi, Mike. I was going to suggest that you write a very strongly worded letter but a very strongly worded blog probably works just as good. I tell you what. I have the solution. Right now…like right now. Right this second. Seriously, I’m not kidding here, right…NOW, there are millions of fans waiting to write their own strongly worded letters to these people because they have wronged you. I say you enlist the army dude. Unleash the fury…of the fans…on them…and enjoy the outcome.

I had to call a buddy of mine as soon as I read this because he’s in the middle of debating on going with pro tools or logic and I’m sorry but if Mike Shinoda of LP/FM can’t get a call back for a freaking month…. that’s not the way you want stuff to be talked about. They better hurry the hell up though because this has been going on for a month which I can imagine isn’t helping the speed of the album any. BTW just picked up LPU 9 from Best Buy because I wanted to make sure I had the CD before I shipped out for U.S. Army Basic Training and I’ve got to say that it was a blast listening to you hum a rhyme to what later became the awesomeness that is MTM.

I haven’t had the chance to use Pro Tools yet but I can understand why that would be so frustrating. I’ve been using Sony Acid Pro 7 for recording my upcoming mixtape (which I’m recording in my bed room. lol) and it allows me to zoom to a ridiculous level. For a lot of instances you NEED to be able to zoom to do what you want to do. For instance, with my mixtape I am remixing Vampire Weekend’s song “Ottoman”. I need to be able to zoom in so that I can create a loop to rap over.

So judging by my need to be able to zoom with such a simple thing as a bed room rap mixtape, I can understand your frustration. Especially if your rig costs that much.

man, that must be annoying. that stuff happens, keep bugging them. after all you did promote them! though with this rant you’re un-promoting them…? hahaha. Hope the problem gets fixed soon.

  92. durg on December 4, 2009 at 5:03 pm
