Shinoda Nerdist Interview

April 6, 2010

I recently met a cool dude posing as a nerd.  His name is Chris Hardwick, and besides hosting “Web Soup,” he runs, doing podcast interviews with interesting folks.  I was clever enough to trick Chris into thinking I was interesting, and he agreed to do an interview.

And BTW, the Nerdist theme song isn’t all 8-Bit in honor of our new game…that’s just his theme song.  Which is I believe is more than a mere coincidence.  Destiny, thy name is Chris Hardwick.

Here’s the podcast.

  11. adam on April 8, 2010 at 12:56 am

That hour went by fast. Sounded a lot of fun.
I think Murry’s post is quite similar to what I feel.

  12. linkinparkette on April 7, 2010 at 8:32 pm

im listening to it right now, im like 17 minutes in. really nice interview, it was funny about the part about the watching air wolf. i never hear of the movie, but that was funny. “did your dad say bulls.”

  13. Kane Anoje on April 7, 2010 at 8:30 pm

People need to stop hating. Linkin Park has been with me sense I was 5 or 6 (born in 95). When I was growing up, it was hard for me understand myself and what was going on. LP was there. When my dad died. LP was there. When my mom died. LP was there. Every girlfriend and back-stabing friend I had. LP was there. If it wasn’t for Linkin Park, I don’t know where I’d be. Thanks guys.

  14. zahrafromiran on April 7, 2010 at 8:25 pm

  20. JP Kaukonen on April 7, 2010 at 9:46 am

Mike, how have you been man! (:

I love the track “Carry Me Away” by Cypress Hill, great producing and one of the best instruments i’ve ever heard. the beat is SICK, and the chorus with your vocals is SOOO SICK. I love it. You know I love you!

Can’t wait for the new LP stuff, the song in the 8 rebellion trailer sounds the Linkin Park I fell in love with in the first place.

    Take care<3,

  22. Kyle Sullivan on April 7, 2010 at 9:02 am

I enjoyed this interview. I think I will try to make an effort to listen to more of your interviews. I also filled out the survey. I can’t wait for the new LP album it will be very interesting as everything you have done. I’m somewhere in between a die-hard fan and casual fan. I hope to meet you on your next tour. I listen to a lot of music like yourself. I try to purchase CDs instead of downloading. Thanks to you I think I want to start keeping my life away from my creative life – this evolving Tweeter. Also from one musician to another I’ve finally started a band last summer called The Art of One. Lineup not complete, but hopefully during the summer that will change.

  23. CurlyLp on April 7, 2010 at 8:21 am

This interview is so funny. I love this podcast. Mike Shinoda and Chris Hardwick are the best!! XD

  25. xenith on April 7, 2010 at 6:10 am

Oh my god Mike, after listening to this interview I can’t tell you how happy I am that you also do not like the look of the new LP site.

I am a long time LP fan… I even have the cassette tapes! I thought I could support anything LP, but after seeing the new site design I was a little distraught… ok that’s a bit of an exaggeration but I haven’t been back since.

Also coming from a design background like yourself I just couldn’t understand the decision to change the site to this pixelated monstrosity… especially knowing how much input you have with the entire LP franchise. Needless to say this interview has put my fears to rest lol

  26. widya rahayu on April 7, 2010 at 5:51 am

it’s the first time for me to hear you talked about your dad that much. and ‘Top Gun’? we grew up in the same era 😀

  27. Yves on April 7, 2010 at 3:15 am

You said in this podcast that the whole band is a bit afraid of negative reactions when the new album is coming out. I’d like to tell you that I’m one of those fans who hopes to hear something totaly diff. from LP. I came in contact with LP when I was 12 years old (SIB). Since then, your Band has always been #1 for me. Now with 20 years I have a better musical education and I’m listening to artists like E.Badu, Phoenix and Massive Attack. If SIB would come out this year, I don’t think I would note that song anymore. So don’t be afraid of the reactions, just do what feels right to you. Sure, some (younger) fans will be disap. but fans like me will enjoy and respect this band even more.

  28. MarieShinizzle on April 7, 2010 at 1:30 am

    great podcast!
and nice idea for a givaway 😀

btw. mike! it’s co cool that you come in chats now so often…but why always when it’s in the middle of the night here? xD

    DAMN!!!…………………. I missed a chat with u cuz I wasn’t able to make an account thr on LPU 😦 😦 😦 😦 😦 😦 😦 😦
Mike, please use ustream to chat..

  30. murry on April 6, 2010 at 9:05 pm

That was unreasonably fun to listen to. Also, I have to say, what you said about the new record sounding radically different excites me something awful. Since I first got into Linkin Park, like, 10 years ago, you have no idea how much my taste in music has changed. I still enjoy all of your past albums just as much as I did in high school, but I’ve been a devotee for so long that I wonder sometimes if it’s not just out of sentimentality, since the stuff I’m getting into now is so different. But that just means my horizons are now so broad that I can accept whatever you guys come up with. And whatever you do, it’s still going to be you, so I already know I’ll be down for whatever.

    • M Shinoda on April 6, 2010 at 9:23 pm

      Dear Murry,
      That’s awesome, and you’re awesome!

What is it like seeing people who listen to your lyrics and melodies and seeing them sing and scream with you? Would love to see your answer

Great interview Mike. I really think the LPU would love a little new music sampler as you mentioned. And I’m glad you finally touched on the Warner/YouTube situation a bit and how it, in the long run, harms the artist and the fans.

  45. RV on April 6, 2010 at 12:38 pm

[[Long interview. Mike, I like the old version of you guys in 8-BR better, but wtf, I still love it. One of the main reasons I want to by an iPad, is to play this game on it!]]

  51. Morinoajin on April 6, 2010 at 11:11 am

As soon as I heard the ‘fans’ part of the interview, I had to run to your site; you got more hardcore fans than you think, and we’re willing to follow you till the end! Meteora was my lifesaver and so is Linkin Park always is still!! ❤ ❤ Love you guys 😀

  52. JanV on April 6, 2010 at 11:08 am

‘Mike Shinoda of Mike Shinoda fame’ LMAO!
Btw, I’m a nerd too & if u’re boring, so am i! ;D Lets make a group on called UNLP (United Nerds of Linkin Park) 😀
The stuff u said bout the hardcore fans really brought a HUGE grin to my face (just like this :D)
I like the idea of testing your new music with people online. How bout letting LPNers play guinea pigs? 🙂
    Thanx 4 everythin~!(i’m not switchin 2 ‘b00bs’ :P)
PS: Do we get to see loads of cool cutting edge planes & helicopters in ur new music videos? If its too expensive, we’ll settle for topless LP members playin volleyball ;D

  53. lpfmfan on April 6, 2010 at 10:53 am

    Dear Mike,

    peace out man

  58. LP_marcia on April 6, 2010 at 10:16 am

    ”Super-smart and super-nice” (it’s correct!) *I hope so*
hmmm… about Video.Chats you have been doing… Can you do it at one time more accessible to European fans?
*sorry for my english* » Márcia from Portugal 🙂

  59. Bec on April 6, 2010 at 10:12 am

This is a very amusing interview. For the next Linkin Park album can you guys do a video dedicated every boys love of top gun and play topless volley ball?

Also next time you do one of those Ustream things can you do it when the rest of the world is awake? I feel left ou being unable to say ‘come to England’ or ‘cut your hair – you look like a lego man’

I feel like I insult you too much *sends hugs* you know I loves you (in a purely you’re in a band I love way and I think you’re amusing…I don’t actually want to see you topless, rumour has it you have 3 nipples and thats freaky!) Crap! I insulted you again – have a nice day, smile and eat gummibears

  60. CAT H on April 6, 2010 at 10:10 am

    yup listening to it now..
    thin mints..mmmm

cool interview! mike, why didn’t you end up being a pilot? i studied flying but effing lack flying hours! 😦

  62. JustBiteMe9 on April 6, 2010 at 9:43 am

Super-smart and super-nice… perfect adjectives to describe Mr. Shinoda here… you are super-nice indeed but I wish I could sit and talk with you to be 100% sure of the super-smart part, haha.

  63. Mary on April 6, 2010 at 9:26 am

    Dear Mike,
I love Hardwick. I am beyond happy that you did a podcast with him.

  64. Alexandra Nofi on April 6, 2010 at 9:23 am

You are such a nerd at heart. I love nerds. I think the next time I see you guys live, I should wear my “I Love Nerds” t-shirt. NERDS UNITE!!!

That’s cool that he called you nice and smart. But seriously, what is your REAL IQ? I know it can’t possibly be 11, if it was, you’d be a vegetable. Like, your non-verbal IQ I mean. Mine’s 108, and I keep asking this simply because I wanna if you beat it or not. And I also last night wanted to ask you what your Tetris high score was, cause I wanted to see if you beat that, too.

  65. EvoOba on April 6, 2010 at 9:16 am

I’ll agree with him on saying u’re “super-smart and super-nice” cause you truly are 🙂 Thx for sharing the interview…I’ve heard it already! It’s pretty dope 🙂

Well, you really tricked him =P
Just kidding, you truly are nice and smart.
