Viva Glorious Excess

May 6, 2010

The spirit of Glorious Excess lives on…but it’s not my show.  I just read about a show called “C’est la Vie! Vanités.”  From the article: “Once used as grisly reminders that you are going to die, or a Memento Mori, skull images are now as ubiquitous on children’s clothing as they were in Jesuit-inspired art of the 16th and 17th centuries.”

I think only some people actually realise and respect the whole concept…I mean it’s one thing to wear a shirt with a skull on it and it’s another thing to wear a shirt with a skull on it and to actually grasp the idea of Memento Mori.I really respect you for your work on that topic btw…I have to say I learned a lot of things from you.

    HAHA! That’s awesome 😀

I still love how subconsciously Glorious Excess (Born) and (Dies) ended up reminiscent of “vanitas”. It’s fun for me to see something we only talked about in my art history classes, be portrayed in the art of a modern day artist.

It brings up an interesting point to that, while I do love some digital art, we are living in a world where graphic design is the new how major to take in art school, and such beautiful, traditional and amazing styles are being shoved into the background. I personally prefer to mix rabbit skin glue, prime a wooden canvas with it and then make my own guesso and use that, than jerk around on photoshop for sick hours.
