Does Advertising Work On You?

May 22, 2010

Ron English is at it again.

  1. dyahikhsanti on July 6, 2010 at 11:32 pm

i used to promote my service directly, advertising doesn’t work for my business, the most important thing is link. but in other cases adv may work

  2. doubting_thomas on June 2, 2010 at 12:05 pm

straightforward advertising does not work. simply slapping a logo on as many places as possible doesn’t make people want to buy things. it’s not like they tally up how many billboards each brand has before they choose what they’re going to drink or wear. showing people a logo and a slogan and telling them to buy the product does not increase profit, it just throws money away. look at tobacco. did their sales decrease when they were prevented from adversiting in this way? no.

    this guys soooo dope

  4. Nessa on May 24, 2010 at 5:56 pm

Hey Mike, like you say, you like art, I also like art and also do drawings…
I saw some pictures from of your drawings and I noticed and I had already noticed that most of them show a lot of pain and suffering.
you used to draw what you feel, or what people feel?
(I doesn’t imagine you sad or hurt to make drawings full of pain)…

  5. on May 24, 2010 at 8:29 am

that’s why tv sucks dude xD
    Internet > TV

  6. Jes" on May 24, 2010 at 6:55 am

  9. analoggirl on May 23, 2010 at 8:35 pm

Great work! I especially loved the 9/11 ones, but I’m a liberal-minded Canadian.;)

Advertising is pervasive, whether it’s in the form of a giant billboard or an advertorial written to resemble an objective, third-party review. I find it funny that most people are quick to say “no,” advertising doesn’t work on me, when toddlers aged 3-5 are recognizing brands and judging products based on their associations with those brands.

Ron English answers what should be a rhetorical question. That’s the brilliance of the Coke and 7/11 pieces. However, what really interests me is that culture jamming shares the same insidious quality of advertising – and I mean that as a compliment.

  10. samcaplat on May 23, 2010 at 2:10 pm

Not at all, however, those adverts are hilarious. Thanks for sharing Mike!

Question – You post a blog now and again dedicated to responding to comments. Have you lost the ability to reply to comments in a threaded fashion on the blog itself? I saw that you had this ability a few posts back.

  11. Raphael on May 23, 2010 at 1:48 pm

    I hate.

  12. FernieG on May 23, 2010 at 1:31 pm

Those are some crazy ads, cool stuff though, and it makes you think!

BTW mike are u going to get the the cure’s remastered Disintegration album coming out on the 8th of June? I know you played a small cover of Just Like Heaven (kiss me album) which was badace! Random question i know lol

  13. BlackFireDevil on May 23, 2010 at 10:34 am

that one is really weird…and funny… advertising just doesn’t work on me AT ALL. some people are just really weak in the mind and just give in to it. i don’t get them.

  14. ammy aybar on May 23, 2010 at 10:22 am

looolx so funny the picture of the musrhoom 😛

  15. Teo on May 23, 2010 at 8:16 am

Not that type of advertising. I get annoyyed by ads like ” Congradulations, you won!!! Enter here to claim your prize”. You don’t even know what you won but they will give it to you. like all the people I use torrent to download software I need or even for some movies. even if you search a movie they throw you something like “Titanic full version torrent” or “Nero dvdrip axxo torrent” at the top of the list. That is the most f**ked up advertising I’ve ever seen.

  16. swati LP on May 23, 2010 at 3:33 am

    CRAP O_o ……. Mike… Advertising doesn’t really work on me…..!!!!!
    😀 😀

  17. Mark Travis [Ro] on May 23, 2010 at 1:34 am

i think we`re gonna wake up with something like this in the near future:
the album`s date will be announced within a week to it`s release,so there won`t be any time left for illegal downloading snd s#!t like that.people will have to spread the word about it`s release, due to the lack of promos.this would be freaking hardcore, not just because it would be `in your face`.but you`ll be shocked and glad at the same time to see it`s done at last.
i don`t have any expectations from you,Mike, and also the other LP members because i know it would turn out epic.
ps: one album i`ve been enjoying a lot lately : 30 seconds to mars – this is war

  18. Souneik on May 23, 2010 at 1:15 am

Pfft..Haha. I make mental notes every time I see, hear, smell a f**king s**t annoying ad form as an idea in some dipsh*ts mind. (-* + M = – Comment) This includes “Congratulations you’ve won”. Everytime I hear that I kill a whole bunch of cuddly f**king beings in my mind. Bunnys… Big eyes bunnies, …ya know… hamsters with over-sized ears and fluff. What were we talking about again?

    “compulsive consumerism”

Funny in a psychological point of view! (compulsive disorder anyone?)

    yeaaa. sure. sometimes 😀

  22. Alexandra Nofi on May 22, 2010 at 6:33 pm

    Anti-advertisement advertisements, basically.

I’ve been in the exact same mind-set as Mr. English for 15+ years, so, that leaves me underwhelmed. In any case, he is raising a good point for people who still are tricked or influenced by advertisements.

Recently, AC 360 on CNN did a test of several children in certain age ranges, and from different racial and economic backgrounds, that was an improved version of the doll test. They brought up an interesting point that, the white bias toy advertisements for example, could be part of why many kids today are still white bias, among several other factors. I thought this might interest you, since it’s on the same topic and all.

  23. SIlentK on May 22, 2010 at 5:15 pm

no, thats why I love movies and hate TV

  24. linkinparkbelgiummanager on May 22, 2010 at 3:52 pm

That Ron must have a good sence of humor. I still missed al your chats Mike… I mean the chats you don’t announce weeks before like the lpu chats with mods. Everytime when you come in, I am sleeping, working, at party, do nothing, so not reading my Iphone’s twitter updates or doing something else… Greetz, Lode

  25. YJ on May 22, 2010 at 2:34 pm

I’m not opposed to interesting advertisement. Similarly, I think having some other posters like those is also funny.

  26. Fatima on May 22, 2010 at 2:25 pm

The character limit is a joke, I spent 10 minutes cutting my comment down to 689 characters and it still tells me I had over 700 and won’t post it.

  35. Sunrise_Ashes on May 22, 2010 at 9:37 am

Not really, if I’m honest. I mean, adverts intrigue me and I enjoy watching them (the Sony adverts with the bouncy balls and the Cadbury’s advert with the gorilla on drums), but they don’t fill me with the urge to go out and buy something.

Mostly, I stumble on things by chance and find that I like them, music included!

  36. EpicLinkinPark on May 22, 2010 at 9:22 am

Wow, that’s pretty epic. Thanks for sharing.

  37. Daniele on May 22, 2010 at 9:15 am

The answer: maybe. What about you?
There’s a lot of things that advertising arouse in people like sensations of need the products or services, and it don’t let us know this can be just superfluous things on our life. I’m almost publicist and journalist, and I can pronounce it. 🙂
And to finish, I love that kind of pop art has to say about the publicity and propaganda.
My question is: what do you think about?
    Hugs from Brazil!
