Help Me Make My “Top Albums” List

August 4, 2010

For an upcoming promotion with iTunes, I need to come up with a list. 15 albums, tied together by a theme. Which of the following themes seems the most interesting to you guys? Vote, and I’ll make that list, to put up on iTunes.

EDIT: it looks like the “surprising” list is in the lead…in the comments, tell me what albums you THINK I listen to. If you’re right, I’ll make sure not to include them on the list.

EDIT 2: We decided that since the “surprising” list and the “influence” list were both so popular…Chester is going to do the “surprising albums” list, and I’ll do a “songs that inspired me” list. Best of both worlds…Thanks for your help!

    3 months.

  2. catmachine7 on October 4, 2010 at 6:28 am

It has been 2 months and there’s no list. Are they still “upcoming”?

  3. newdivide2010 on August 23, 2010 at 6:39 pm

Hello Mike, this is Puppy from Taiwan.
Something influence people, gloomy, but cheeps people up.
Never forget to think aobut the beginning.

  4. livelaughlove101 on August 15, 2010 at 7:11 am

I think your list would include some of the really talented and bold artist who are doing unique things with music such as Phoenix, Kings of Leon, The National, MGMT, Florence and the Machine, The Black Keys and some others. Perhaps your list would include albums like Phoenix’s “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix” as well as KOL’s most recent album (Only by the Night) and maybe even some of their older stuff as well. A lot of the music I mentioned (not including your amazing music with Linkin Park and Fort Minor) inspire and influence me on a daily basis and hopefully they resonate with you also. I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

  5. jagta on August 12, 2010 at 7:49 am

  7. bigbadxandro on August 10, 2010 at 6:17 am

@kurwajegomac LP wanted to achieve another level or type of music that’s why they made that special album! The album are more on positive message… it is very different from their 2 albums which is Hybrid Theory and Meteora because that two albums are more on frustration, anger, hate, etc. in short it is more on negative mgs…hehehe

  8. kurwajegomac on August 9, 2010 at 11:46 pm

Sorry Mike but your new song “The Catalyst” I do not like because it’s not what I expected .. I thought that on this new album will be songs like “Somewhere I Belong” “Papercut” “One Step Closer” .. I thought that there will be nu-metal songs as before .. I’m sorry but really I do not like it.. I think that the album will have songs like I
    was exchange

If we pre-ordered the album from do we get The Catalyst video and Blackbirds, or is that only for the ATS Deluxe Version on iTunes?

  15. Julian on August 7, 2010 at 10:27 pm

Huge congratulations for reaching over 10 million fans in Facebook! Keep up the good work man, can’t wait for ATS!

  16. travz21 on August 7, 2010 at 9:05 pm

I hope you’re influenced by the great bands of the past, as well as the great bands of the present. Trent Reznor is the one person I hope you’ve gained insight from. One of the most stunning and innovative instramentalists of our time.

Other than NIN, The Mars Volta, Muse, Tool, Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin all have a variety of things that all bands should learn something from.

That said, The Catalyst sounds like it could be part of one incredible album. It doesn’t sound like a standalone song, which gets me really excited for what the rest of the record is going to bring to the table. Reminds of of a song The Fragile or Year Zero. Keep moving forward, LP. This ride is amazing.

  17. todraw on August 7, 2010 at 5:59 pm

  23. rhcp14570 on August 7, 2010 at 11:25 am

I think Led Zeppelin IV could be on the list!! Like Physical Grafity too!! Siamese Dream by The Smashing Pumpkins is pretty good and could be on the list too!! I think Sgt Peppers Lonely-Heart Club Band by The Beatles is one of the best album. Nevermind the Bollocks; Spagetti Incident; John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band; Suede.

  24. skyzlmt on August 7, 2010 at 10:12 am

Since you are on WTF kinda sound is this kick, have you thought about using a Matt Bellamy like Midi/Kaoss pad guitar? Those pump out some serious kickassary.

I’ve been trying to get this book “The Keys of Enoch” forever now. I just opened it and read: “They bring with them Light which is greater than
a thousand suns to awaken our next stage of evolution and to assist in
bringing us into a purer form of superluminal Light.” I wasn’t ready yet and I should have been. ..and now I’m going to make sure I am. But by myself. Thank You

  29. DnScream on August 6, 2010 at 6:26 pm

I think you know these albums, but I am not sure that you like them: Nevermind by Nirvana, Siamese Dream by The Smashing Pumpkins, The Fat of the Land by The Prodigy.

  30. EpicLinkinPark on August 6, 2010 at 2:52 pm

Little late on commenting this but, Here is what I think. (I chose what influenced me)
Here’s what I think you listen to:
    The Beatles
    Michael Jackson
    Jimi Hendrix
    Guns N’ Roses
    and mainly all classic bands

  31. sebi97 on August 6, 2010 at 2:41 pm

  32. poststructuralist on August 6, 2010 at 2:32 pm

I think you listen to: Bright Eyes, The Cardigans, Bat For Lashes, The Shins,IAMX, Yuksek, M.I.A, The Doors, The Beatles,Portishead…maybe πŸ˜›

You said that you like electronic music … Hmmm maybe Paul Oakenfold, Moby or ATB?

  34. tomvanderbeek on August 6, 2010 at 1:27 pm

A lot of 80’s that’s for sure, but a litte abstract. I know: Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, Stone Temple Pilots & The Cure remembering of given interviews.

They didn’t make a lot of good stuff, but I guess you like Killing Joke – Love Like Blood. Maybe Tears For Fears, Talking Heads, Talk Talk, Kate Bush etc.

  35. xerotheory on August 6, 2010 at 1:06 pm

Is Chester a Muse fan, because it sounded like he was playing Hysteria on the something new video.

  36. vbladecro on August 6, 2010 at 7:36 am

Probably Prodigy….IDK you just seem the type lol

  37. Hell_enia on August 6, 2010 at 6:36 am

What about Rage Against The Machine..?

  38. akistarlight on August 6, 2010 at 4:19 am

Okay.. what do you think about Muse? On a fansite there’s a topic about “Linkin Park influenced by them” I don’t think so but what do you think about?
and.. I know, too many questions but will we have any chance to get 8-Bit Rebellion on Android? Thank you so much for everything!

  39. sagback on August 6, 2010 at 4:15 am

πŸ™‚ mike, in my opinion…you are resembling PARAMORE…they are younger than you..but their songs are as good as yours..and I think you should have at least one of their albums ..had you already had ? tell me which one πŸ˜€

  40. cctjehh on August 6, 2010 at 2:12 am

a lot of old school hiphop like Ice Cube, Public Enemy and Cypress hill right?
and I saw an old picture of you with a deftones vest.. deftones is my second favourite band ;D
but since you have 33 days of music on your pc I guess there’s a big chance that you listen to the same music as a lot of people here (:

  41. america09 on August 6, 2010 at 1:38 am

I think you listen to Cypress Hill, too… right? πŸ˜‰

  42. ilookcz on August 6, 2010 at 12:07 am

  43. minuteforce on August 5, 2010 at 11:07 pm

Have it the other way around. Have Chester do the “influenced” list and you do the “surprising one” … 😑

  44. fatimalp on August 5, 2010 at 11:01 pm

you’re listen to Vampire Weekend, Temper Trap, Micachu, Mew, BlakRok, Metric? I don’t know, but if you haven’t heard a band called MuteMath, please check them out…they’re very cool. i like their music! =]

“Best of Both Worlds?” Are you trying to tell us that Chester is going to have Hannah Montana is his list? Cause that’s REALLY unexpected,

  47. annaretimes on August 5, 2010 at 7:09 pm

As some people have already asked, old or new electronic artists like Crystal Castles or Daft Punk?

Also, I’m curious about this: Music from movies? Soundtracks?

  48. divideanddevour on August 5, 2010 at 6:27 pm

i would guess you were influenced by something like Rage Against The Machine or Nine Inch Nails or Stone Temple Pilots to hip-hop like Run DMC or Wu-Tang Clan. but i also think of classic bands like The Police, U2, and Led Zeppelin.

  51. justbiteme9 on August 5, 2010 at 4:08 pm

I would lol if you only put something like Nsync or Backstreet Boys in any list… I would die of laughter for sure, but at the same time that would prove my point because I believe that everybody has hummed a song from a boyband and ended liking it.

On the other hand we know that Brad likes Britney xD “I’m not a girl…” xD

    Obviously I’m kidding…

  52. tnti on August 5, 2010 at 3:59 pm

acctualy mike i think you’re about to listen : jay-z or dido maybe out of aches album also :D,a thousand suns by you gays, blessed (busta rhymes),umbrella (jay-z & rihanna)…… i can’t guess becuz i think you’re better then all musiciens so how you can listen to the others πŸ˜€

  53. stingerlp on August 5, 2010 at 3:56 pm

I don’t know if my conclusion is right, but you Mike really like Drum and Base music! =) I just remind quickly the song “Drawing” (“Breaking The Habit” Demo) and “Leave Out All The Rest (Remix)”. So to continue my thought I’d guess that you listen Drum and Base bands, like Pendulum, and their last album, called “Immersion”. Am I right Mike? If I am, did it influenced you somehow?

  54. zara19lp on August 5, 2010 at 3:24 pm

We’ve seen you give lists of people that influenced you, I think I’d like to see a list of people you listen to while you paint.

People I think you listen to, I compiled some time ago a list of bands/artists you’ve mentioned in interviews that you like since 2000, if any of these bands are wrong reply so I can remove, also these are the bands we know you like!

  55. shugahcolby on August 5, 2010 at 2:59 pm

I bet you listen to some symphonic metal stuff occasionally, just because of the musical ideas, like maybe trans siberian or within temptation. Maybe even some motion city soundtrack, they seem like they might be in a PR tour list, and some of the lyrical themes remind me of LP.

  79. Fetus on August 5, 2010 at 11:28 am

I assume that you listen to Wu Tang Clan. Like 8 Diagrams or one of them.

    Hold on mike:

YOU HAVEN’T HEARD THIS IS WAR BY 30STM yet??? Oh please please do so! They also changed their music from alternative rock to…experimental rock/whatever. They are very strong lyrics and melodies on it. They experimented with a lot of instruments and they featured their fans on almost every track. Either with background screaming or clapping.
NIGHT OF THE HUNTER, and STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND are my fav. Please do listen to’s an amazing journey.

  82. chsirish73 on August 5, 2010 at 11:06 am

I’d guess you listen to a lot of indie rock based off of random stuff I’ve seen recently. I’d say you probably listen to some Jimi Hendrix because I think I saw somewhere once that you like Are You Experienced? (song, not album, though how could you not love the whole album too?). Other than that I’d imagine you’re pretty diverse in what you listen to and I’m rethinking my vote.

    • M Shinoda on August 5, 2010 at 11:12 am

      Jimi is king.

  83. kkontra on August 5, 2010 at 10:58 am

the black album, fallen, dark side of the moon, the wall, the gatalog, swan songs, the resistance, some great reward, music for the masses

  84. lpmarcia on August 5, 2010 at 10:53 am

Voted for ”…you wouldn’t think I like (but I do)”.
If it’s something that I wouldn’t think you like (but you do), well… Something of Michael Jackson or Madonna… (:?)

However, I think you listen to ”Wolgang Amadeus Phoenix” by Phoenix… or ”The Resistance” by Muse… or ”Korn III – Remember Who You Are” by KoΠ―n (I’m not so sure of this)
    … or you listen to, I don’t know, maybe… ”A Thousand Suns” ? πŸ˜€

I would like to know what influence you too, but yeah, it’s for another time πŸ™‚

    • M Shinoda on August 5, 2010 at 11:10 am

That one is good…so is Vheissu. Beggars comes third, probably.

  89. hoplessdreamer95 on August 5, 2010 at 10:21 am

you wouldn’t think I like (but I do)

    i guess ;p

  90. theric on August 5, 2010 at 10:21 am

Mike, I would say u listen to afi and blaqk audio, if not then u should πŸ™‚ they are my second favorite bands right behind my number one which is linkin park πŸ™‚

    • M Shinoda on August 5, 2010 at 11:10 am

I have an AFI album or two, but it’s old stuff.

  91. treylang21 on August 5, 2010 at 10:15 am

You should have listened to 30stm – This is War, kinda because of the new album ATS… but maybe it did inspire you.

    • M Shinoda on August 5, 2010 at 11:09 am

      Haven’t heard it.

  92. fenix2exe on August 5, 2010 at 10:10 am

I think Daft Punk, Disturbed, the Goo Goo Dolls, Evanescence, Eagles, Idiot Pilot and Blink 182… that what it comes to my head!!!

    • M Shinoda on August 5, 2010 at 11:09 am

I think that’s what you like.

  93. Aditya_the_warrior_within on August 5, 2010 at 9:51 am

don’t know anyone specific but rap rock and hip-hop for sure

    • M Shinoda on August 5, 2010 at 11:08 am

hip hop – yes. rap rock – nearly never (unless you count RHCP, Rage, or Run DMC).

  94. Linkin Theorist on August 5, 2010 at 9:49 am

This is tricky, but I chose what influenced you. I wanted to choose what you paint to, but I decided to stick with what influenced you. I am full with surprises from you, thank you very much πŸ˜€ lol Random pop songs which end up on all charts globally would more than just shock me….
But I’d like for you to add albums that you grew up listening to.

  95. euanto on August 5, 2010 at 9:47 am

well you surely listen to GBC maybe jay-z? haha rihanna? i remember the cover after umbrella xD i dont know i guess guns n’roses? i agree with deniserashidi maybe metric? i really hope the “surprising” list wins πŸ˜€

  96. shrocaeth on August 5, 2010 at 9:43 am

…that influenced me sounds like you, Mike. You grew up on hip-hop and your musical background helped you create Linkin Park.

  97. lonesomeraine on August 5, 2010 at 9:42 am

I’d say something like Daft Punk Discovery. Lol but with the amount of music you have what you don’t listen to might be easier to guess XP

  98. boger7lp on August 5, 2010 at 9:41 am

SYMPHONY X (PARADICE LOST) I recommend it to everyone
    is beautiful and powerful

  99. sodhipop on August 5, 2010 at 9:33 am

Well we know you like Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix by Phoenix and Heligoland by Massive Attack (both for good reason). You also like Contra by Vampire Weekend. Hmm.

Well if you like Massive Attack you probably have Mezzanine. Maybe Blue Lines too.

    • M Shinoda on August 5, 2010 at 11:07 am

  100. deniserashidi on August 5, 2010 at 9:23 am

    Hmm, what I think?
    Maybe somthing from Gorillaz? Metric?

I dunno man, maybe just something electric. πŸ˜€

    • M Shinoda on August 5, 2010 at 11:07 am

  101. thunderofangels on August 5, 2010 at 9:21 am

Speaking of surprising stuff, I would say you listen(ed?) to the Dido records quite a lot πŸ™‚

    • M Shinoda on August 5, 2010 at 11:07 am

      First album – true!

  102. nicoskinnyman on August 5, 2010 at 9:20 am

I bet you really like Beggars, from Thrice and Radiohead’s Kid A

    • M Shinoda on August 5, 2010 at 11:06 am

  103. betty108 on August 5, 2010 at 9:10 am

I chose “You wouldn’t think I like (but I do)”
    Surprise me, Mike. Surprise me.

  104. lplovei on August 5, 2010 at 9:02 am

I think ‘…you wouldn’t think I like(but I do).’ would be interesting. It would be cool if you did a shorter list (maybe 3 or 5) of the two other ones, and some ‘Others’ that you liked.

  105. madmaxrussia on August 5, 2010 at 8:31 am

Theme of regrets and sorrows must be very good…

  106. fekenji on August 5, 2010 at 8:05 am

    …that influenced me ;P

  107. janashinoda on August 5, 2010 at 7:39 am

hey this is hard. I wanted to choose them all but then I realic that the first one INCLUDES the other two options so I voted for ‘…I paint to’
also thanks for the videos that u posted before. greetings

  108. zahralp on August 5, 2010 at 7:35 am

    hmmm let me think

    “…that influenced me.”

  109. kisszabo on August 5, 2010 at 7:27 am

i’ll be off but, i saw the new Saw 7 trailer, and i’m a lil bit confused cause i think i saw Chester in it. Is that possible? πŸ˜€

  110. daisy74 on August 5, 2010 at 6:55 am

I was actually really surprised a few weeks back when you mentioned the Sugarcubes. I bring them up in conversations about music I enjoyed as a teen/early 20’s and no one ever knows who they are. Its kind of sad to be honest, such good memories from their albums.

  111. kimi126c2b on August 5, 2010 at 6:00 am

    Shade and Shadows ;]

  112. Alexandra Nofi on August 5, 2010 at 5:46 am

I picked “I paint too”, just cause I wanna see what kind music actually ties into that (Like Ok Go! for example).

Funny, I see a couple comments about listening to music like painting… I usually listen to music while, you guessed it, WRITING. Meteora works well for me. Some of my most awesomest ideas came from listening to Meteora. You should be proud.

BTW, could you tell Anna I said hi? And don’t have a heart attack, she knows who I am ;D

Yeah, I am totally extra bubbly today, for absolutely no reason what-so-ever πŸ˜›

  113. alex1120 on August 5, 2010 at 4:42 am

  116. theyactuallymakemylifebetter on August 5, 2010 at 3:36 am

One year ago do you remember where you were (on August 5th?), you and your bandmates? Think about that πŸ˜‰
The Catalyst is so cool, it’s perfect for our summer, until the album! I’m really happy for u guys. πŸ˜€

  117. fenix2exe on August 5, 2010 at 3:13 am

“what tha f*** Shinoda likes that” hahaha!!!

  118. whatsername65 on August 5, 2010 at 2:30 am

Interesting choice, but I would like to see … wouldn’t think I like this (but I do), because Mr Shinoda (or Mr Shinyoda as Zane Lowe called you to your face!) I think you are full of surprises x

  119. lode1989 on August 5, 2010 at 2:25 am

  120. dorito82 on August 5, 2010 at 1:54 am

  121. aninhalp on August 5, 2010 at 1:44 am

you wouldn’t think I like (but I do). I will surely amaze me!! I think you’re a box of surprise. πŸ˜€

  124. Olla Chaz on August 5, 2010 at 12:45 am

I’d love to know your Top 15 Albums for all those themes, Mike. πŸ™‚
Anyway, I voted for “you wouldn’t think I like (but I do)”.

BTW, don’t you think the official video for The Catalyst takes a bit too long to release? We, fans, are dying with anticipation and excitement! πŸ˜€

  125. Aditya_the_warrior_within on August 5, 2010 at 12:35 am

i’m more interested in seeing the list
and btw did you check facebook? hardly a month and we are reaching almost 10 million Linkin Park fans on the page!!

    I chose ”I’d paint to”…minority?

  129. marvi8 on August 4, 2010 at 11:42 pm

i think you need to choose “you wouldn’t think i like it (but i do)
because then pepole can learn new things about you…
everyone have somthing they like and dont show it..
the catalyst is really good!!!!!! i really like it! πŸ˜›

  130. lilgingerkid on August 4, 2010 at 11:38 pm

    β€œthat influenced me” btw

  131. widya rahayu on August 4, 2010 at 11:36 pm

Just voted for “… I paint to”. First thing i read, it was like when i see something, i knew i’ll draw it one day.

  132. Michael Gonzalez on August 4, 2010 at 11:33 pm

    I chose “that influenced me”.

  133. iancr on August 4, 2010 at 11:24 pm

I chose “you wouldn’t think I like” assuming DJ Quik and Jaques Brel would both be there, and you never get to see them on the same list.

  134. pyttnl on August 4, 2010 at 11:22 pm

    “… that influenced me.”

Why is everyone voting for that. πŸ™‚ Isn’t it much more interesting to get to know more, instead of something that has been asked a million times in interviews. Hehe.

    I’ll go for “…you wouldn’t think I like (but I do).”

Maybe ‘The Vengaboys’ will be on that list.

  135. jdennis88 on August 4, 2010 at 11:21 pm

…I’m curious to know what you paint to! =]

  136. kathyxx on August 4, 2010 at 11:20 pm

    This is TRICKY.

I chose “I’d Paint to” because you already have said what some of your influences are, and I think this list has a higher probability of surprises. Besides that might sound like a good playlist for me to draw to, too.

You already have an iTunes playlist, and a lot of things there are influences, no?

  137. pinkwater3 on August 4, 2010 at 11:20 pm

I think it would be very interesting (at least for me and other artists) to know what kind of music inspires you when you paint, so yeah. πŸ™‚
