Haters and Believers: A Thousand Suns Album Release

September 27, 2010

Hey guys.  I’ve been getting some questions regaring my thoughts about the album release, so I thought that I’d try to address some of them.

To start, a quick review: about a year and a half ago, we made a conscious decision to take our music in a new direction.  Once the music started flowing, it became a modern, alternative sound–an abstract, concept-driven, 50-minute journey.  We predicted the album release would be incendiary; the new direction would be welcomed by some, and fervently resisted by others.  Now, with that album out in stores, it seems that you guys are curious about our intentions behind the music, and our reactions to the noise being made about A Thousand Suns.

Let’s get the simple part out of the way.  To the fans who like the new album: a million thanks for your support.  There are some of you that have been with us for a long time, and are thrilled about the new sound; there are others who weren’t sure of the new album at first, but have given it a chance, and are now reaping its rewards.  And there are others who have never been fans of Linkin Park, but are interested in the band for the first time with A Thousand Suns.  We’re happy to have all of you on board, and we appreciate your good words and rave reviews.

A friend of mine told me a story from his childhood: when he was a little kid, his dad, who never had any facial hair, left for a trip and came home with a beard.  His son took one look at him and ran away, demanding, “what happened to my real dad?”

So let’s talk about “haters.”

We’ll ignore the fact that there are people out there who would review and rate an album without really listening to it, who might preview some of the tracks and throw down an opinion (although I think the music stores and websites should keep the right to “rate it” limited strictly to those who have bought and listened to something).  I don’t need to tell you that the internet can breed negativity-for-negativity’s-sake.  So let’s skip that nonsense, and talk only about the people who were already Linkin Park fans, but listened to the new album and didn’t like it.  As I write this, one of the most popular iTunes (US) reviews of A Thousand Suns is by Janxrod, who gives the album one star and asks “What happened to the real Linkin Park?”  In response to this review, one knee-jerk reaction I found seems to be an assumption that people who dislike ATS simply love heavy metal and hate alternative / electronic music.  But, in their defense, many of the “one-star reviewers” are not brainless cynics who talk shit because they’re bored.

I’m a curious guy, so I did some research about Janxrod.  Although 7/10 of his favorite albums include stuff like Disturbed, Shinedown, and Dethklok…he also likes Daft Punk.  He’s not opposed to a little variety.  So what bothers Janxrod so much about A Thousand Suns?  One reason is that, according to his page, we “write songs about how pissed off they are at their old fans, telling them to go f*** themselves.  That’s not mature, that’s just disrespectful.”

Know what?  I agree.  That’s a bad message.  The problem is: it’s not really our message.

Let’s clear it up: the other guys and I have said many things in the past, not all of it thoughtful or respectful (sorry, we’re human too).  But let it be known that we love and respect our fans of all eras.  And, just as we stand behind Hybrid Theory, we stand behind the work we put into A Thousand Suns, so we think it’ll be a rewarding listen if you decide to give it a chance (like Justin Lewis, Jeffrey Griffith, and James Montgomery did).  And, in case Janxrod decides to give the album a chance, our door will always be open.

Some will always lazily claim that a band has “gone pop” or “sold out.”  As far as I know, “selling out” means compromising the integrity of your band/music in exchange for money or popularity.  Never before has this claim been so absurd.  This is the opposite of a “sell out” album; don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.  If money and popularity was the goal, the safe bet would be to try to make Hybrid Theory again.  Outside our studio walls, the climate for music is different: according to Nielsen SoundScan, of the 97,751 albums released in 2009, only 12 of them sold more than one million units last year.  Everyone in the world is buying music by the song, not by the album.  So, more than ever before, to stand behind one whole 50-minute piece–asking the fan to listen to the whole thing rather than a couple songs–is unquestionably a big a request.  (Some people want to color that request as a “marketing tactic,” that we are asking people to buy the whole thing instead of a couple songs.  If that was the case, we’d be the worst marketers ever.  Clearly, a collection of “hit singles” is a better reason to buy a whole album than a concept record.)  Radio singles still sell an album.  A concept album requires a leap of faith on the listener’s part.  The whole “sell out” argument is wholly illogical.

So why did we make such a big change?  “What happened to the real Linkin Park?”  We’re still here.  We look and sound different, but the intention behind the music is the same as it has been since day one: in the studio, we are constantly in search of new sounds that excite and inspire us.

Hearing that our album debuted at #1 in 15 countries gave us all a massive feeling of gratitude, but if being in this band has taught me anything in the past decade, it’s that you can’t base your happiness on things that are out of your control.  The truth is, we’re believers that good, honest art will triumph at the end of the day.  But the measure of real success isn’t sales, numbers, and chart position.  It’s about a connection with a dedicated fan base and a chance to introduce people to a fresh new sound.

See you on tour, where we’ll be playing songs from “Hybrid Theory” through “A Thousand Suns.”  Fans of every era are welcome.

I wish all the people that bitch about A Thousand Suns would read this. Most really have the wrong idea of what’s going on.

  3. butix on April 18, 2011 at 11:37 am

if before i have respect for all of you, now, after read this, i have more and more respect for all of you!! i would to tell you more and more thing but i can’t speak english very well. so i only tell you that ATS is an amazing Work! Italian fans are waiting for You!

  4. luanaevi on March 30, 2011 at 10:15 pm

You’re right. Keep growing up like you did. ATS is now my favorite album. Don’t care abou these people because, you know, once you got the theory of how the thing works, everybody wants the next thing to be just like the first.

Please come to Rock in Rio, in Brazil.

  5. Mohamad Sani on March 24, 2011 at 2:10 am

You’re right about “listening on the fly” part. Back then when the 1st time listening, at a glance I dont find ATS good enough but when I heard it over and over again I finally got the feeling. ATS is AWESOME, UNIQUE and TASTY!

Best greetings from a fan from Indonesia Mike! LP songs have filled up more than 50% of songs which I listen in my whole life 🙂

  6. nickdavis14 on March 23, 2011 at 4:43 am

I still remember my first time hearing it. I was like this is different, but awesome. If Linkin Park was original sounding with Hybrid Theory, then words cant even describe how original ATS is. Plus when I heard Wretches and Kings I was like ‘OMG was that line a tribute to Public Enemy… OK now that line there definitely was’. I know it is kinda corny to say this, but Mike is one of the only rappers that compares to Chuck D (not much of a free styler, but when it comes to writing and performing your lyrics you just got that ‘thing’), plus all the MFR social stuff you guys do, LP featuring you, 8 bit rebellion. Mate you done nothing to deserve anything less than a tonne of respect.

  7. mikkibeth1976 on March 9, 2011 at 4:03 pm

Well said Mike! While the new album is different it is still very well done. Love it and really enjoyed the concert in Houston 3/3/11!!!

  8. brysislupin on February 3, 2011 at 4:56 am

You guys truly are one of a kinda
I´m a recent LP fan, I won´t lie! But recently I discovered that LP was growing on me since I was 14! But I´m a dork so I just found out how much your music and your words mean to me recently
Your work helped me through tough times, making it all better. Easier. And for that I´m gratefull to you forever
I love, respect and admire all of your work. You are artists, my favorite artists and everything you do is like a glass of water after 5 days in a desert.

    A forever gratefull fan

“But let it be known that we love and respect our fans of all eras.”
Awww I love you too Mike 🙂 I became a fan during the MTM era. But of course, I love all your music. 🙂 I, personally, love ATS. Irridescent is so beautiful. I encourage you to make music in any way that you want. It will always be good, in any direction that you go. That is because you are a very talented artist. Linkin Park is the best band ever because they get creative with their music. They aren’t afraid to try new things. They are in it for the art of music and the love of fans. 🙂

  10. hybridlilah on November 22, 2010 at 2:28 am

I’m glad to read that post, the nobility of your reaction, and all the replies. it’s reassuring. I got scared at first, what if the negativity kills LP? on the LP forum, the skepticism is luckily fading. All great things polarize, and it can be weakening. No, LP won’t go down. We won’t let that happen, as long as you got some “work in progress”. ATS IS brilliant, addictive, as were the other albums, though different, still innovative and honest. every album makes sense in its own time. whatever you do, however you evolve, we want more. And thank you so much for being close to the fans. Wow, you really are a beautiful person.

  11. xxlinkingirlxx on November 21, 2010 at 3:56 pm

“honest art will triumph at the end of the day” thanks for what you`ve just said…people of the world Linkin Park will be always Linkin Park; for those who didn`t understand, din`t like or just didn`t listen the album; well you cannot expect them to do the same as they did ten years ago; they grew up, they are more mature and of course don`t you think that if they do the same music they will feel frustrated…well i have to tell this im a huge huge fan i listen to the band since 1999 and i will never get tired of them; the reaso: they change constantly and at the same time essence is the same. Thank you Linkin Park for being in my life and in the life of so many people…YOU ROCK!

  12. naur64 on November 18, 2010 at 5:24 am

. thank you for letting us know , well, whatever it takes, it’s still the same . you and the band will always rock my world whatever kind of music/genre it is. LINKIN PARK WILL ALWAYS BE LINKIN PARK

  13. gustavodebrink on November 15, 2010 at 2:35 pm

    Thanks for this amazing post!

Innovation – That’s what makes a good group of artists!
Keep rocking on Mike and let nothin’ stop you guys from being creative
That’s why, atleast from a personally aspect, You are my favourite band over all!

By the way, Thanks for the amazing performance @ London o2 11/11/2010

    Love from Sweden.

  14. sabsyz on November 15, 2010 at 12:45 pm

I think the people they hate the new album , are weird , everybody makes progress and your music is art and art has to make progress…i love the new album, when every album has the same feature it´s going to be boring…

go on and rock the world 🙂

    like u

    greets from germany

  15. stormrider00 on November 14, 2010 at 5:37 am

I think Janxrod was listening to it with his ears closed. There is no song on this album about you guys getting pissed at your old fans.

  16. Ilinca Milosan on November 13, 2010 at 9:24 pm

People who cannnot appreciate what you were trying to achieve do not understand what LP is all about. I have been with you since the beginning and although I may not have liked certain songs, I have always given them a chance to grow on me at the very least.
I have read and seen everything there is about you and form that I can say that I would never assume that the reason for your change of sound is due to money or fame. In fact, even my father said, “They grew up and are now interested in different sounds; it’s natural”.I agree with him.
Everyone who expected you to always be the same has no idea who you are.

  17. mikekent1990 on November 12, 2010 at 2:08 am

May I first apologize. I was one of “those” people that liked LP a little less because of minutes to midnight.
However I had a spurt of growing up and have come to realize that you need to grow as a band and progress. I still wouldn’t say MTM is one of my favourite albums however I honestly do appreciate it for the piece of art that it is. I’m ashamed of myself for that period however I can’t stop playing A Thousand Suns 😀 it’s amazing. I also got a Music For Relief banner from your Birmingham show this week. Please accept me back as part of the team and forgive my lapse of judgement.I won’t be leaving you again.

  18. kristiina15 on November 9, 2010 at 9:05 am

Mike, u have an amazing ability to be politely downright and yet, not hurt anybody’s feelings:) For my perspective, a true fan goes along with the band’s changes and has enough respect for the band to not judge their work just because the don’t like new sounds or so. To be fair: I can proudly say, that if LP would have stayed in the same musical and artistic bounds ’til today, i don’t think i’d had that much respect and love for them.
Thank you, Mike, for the words that needed to be said:)

  19. stormrider00 on November 4, 2010 at 12:26 pm

You have certainly achieved a whole lot with this new album and MTM (My favourite). But maybe the ATS cover should have had a “Open-minded listeners only” disclaimer on it. Just to ward off the one-track minded head-bangers who have little taste for meaningful music.

  20. robann on November 3, 2010 at 9:12 am

in France I do not have accesses to your video
    it’s not good

  21. rexlpu10 on November 1, 2010 at 9:24 am

Mike, I have followed you and the band for these 10 long years, I have all their albums Included A Thousand Suns, I’m an active member of LPU, I can say is that I am disappointed in his two latest works: Minutes To Midnight and A Thousand Suns, I understand where he was going with this album, but I can not understand why this kind of genre they used, always believed in you as a great band, every time I listen to Hybrid Theory and Meteora makes me feel full of energy, go forward, follow my purposes in this life I lead, but now with this kind of music that you have only achieved one thing: FAILURE

  22. treadstone35 on October 31, 2010 at 11:33 am

    Part I

Great post, just amazing what explained me a lot of things. You know, in my opinion ATS isn’t for scanty people. A music journalist who whole life was listening to metal, hard rock etc. always will write negative write-up. The same with fans of such sorts of music. They will never be able to accept this new, unique sound. ATF demands extending a lot of tolerance, right perception and frankness what I haven’t got a problem with. My way through music was really long and bumpy, through probably every kind of music. Fortunately (I guess) I’ve found right taste, which now I’m happy with. Honestly speaking, I’ve experienced ATF, like I integrated it with my life.

  23. joesfan007 on October 31, 2010 at 10:53 am

i think you never chaged your style, because LP is LP, it is Hybird Theory (I don’t mean the album)
I just listened to ATS and I can’t say which album is my favourite album, because i love all your songs. I’ts crazy but I even can’t say which song is my favourite song because I change it every 5 minutes 🙂
I’m a really big fan and I damn it, that i’m not able to come to LPU summit, because I’m from austria and just a 13 year old gril, and so I’m not alble to go to london 😥
but the show in linz was amazing 🙂
love you mike, you are my biggest infulence

  24. stormrider00 on October 27, 2010 at 2:33 pm

Just read a comment by TOMMYTOM69. The people who ”made LP great” and expect LP to sacrifice their musical aspirations for them are not fans, and sticking up foe such people is detrimental to the band you claim to love. Mike, good job on ATS. I wish those old ”fans” would judge music by how much meaning it has, not by how much it features heavy guitars. In the end, the haters don’t matter because good music achieves its purpose at the end of the day.

  25. allybcanada on October 22, 2010 at 7:13 am

Have loved you guys since 2001. I still listen to every album regularly (including Collision Course, B-Sides, Reanimation, Fort Minor album etc). I can’t say that about most artists. I LOVE ATS.

  26. bumblebee73 on October 22, 2010 at 2:37 am

Hi Mike, just the fact that you wrote this post explains what kind of person you are, and you all guys in the band are. How many other artist could do something like this for their fans?

I’m a believer and I’m a believer since ever, I respect all your choises, because you all are ARTISTS, and artists have the right to evolve and make experiments. Beside this, I really love ATS, it breaks my soul and keeps me alive.

Dont pay attention to the haters, they can go on to listen their commercial music. LP are big guys’ stuff.

    Love, Angy

  27. newfoundlpfan on October 19, 2010 at 4:22 pm

Honestly, I never really paid a lot of attention to LP.I owned and really liked Hybird Theory and some other songs, but I never really thought anything of the band.

After hearing the Catalyst, I instantly pre-ordered ATS. I liked the new style. Now, ATS makes all the other music I own seem out-dated, its all I can listen to. Music had never really made me feel the way ATS does.

    You made me a believer.

  28. lpgal9000 on October 18, 2010 at 12:14 pm

I’m so glad you wrote this, I am sick of all the haters saying “Linkin Park sold out,” or “they suck now,” or “they’re older stuff was way better” – I am sick to death of it! >.< So glad that you cleared this up, this is exactly what I have been trying to tell them, you still rock my world LP. A fan till the end! ^^

  29. lyubasha on October 14, 2010 at 6:46 am

I already have 10 years with you, guys, and I am just a fan who believes that this art can not stand still. you grow and we grow along with your music. Thanks you for the new sound and new album. It is great!
hope to hear you in Russia.

    with all due respect, Lyubasha

  30. simonehollie on October 13, 2010 at 6:40 pm

Well said, I couldn’t agree with you more. I’ve heard people give negative comments about your new album, people that I know- however when asked if they’ve listened to the entire album, the majority of those people said no. So, I let them borrow the album because they don’t want to buy it themselves, and truth be known the majority (not all) actually really enjoyed it! And those who didn’t, it was mostly because they were stereotypical metalheads!

  31. Marianna on October 13, 2010 at 6:10 pm

    Hi Mike!

I would like to thank the concert u did here in Brazil at SWU!
I thought the guys organizing the event could have provided a better sound for u, but it was just another one of the things they left to be desired =/ What saved my night was seeing u guys play, even the cold shocked our spirits! u rocked!
I hope u haven’t been upset with the problem of sound and not return to Brazil again =/ We love u guys!
Good luck with the tour and congrats to the excellent album!
ps: i almost snapped when I heard The Catalyst live *–*

    with love, Marianna.

Hey, Mike I think you’ll like the “Wretches And Kings” Video that I made. Here’s the video – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIMo1WoHcfE

In the video you can see quite good effects and sync. I made it for 2-3 days. I don’t believe you have time to watch my video, but if you find some free time, please watch it!

  35. matt073184 on October 10, 2010 at 3:55 am

I first ran across you guys back when hybrid first came out. i was a junior in high school and i was 15 at the time. I’d never heard of you before but i took a listen in the store and picked up the album in cali. brought it back up to idaho to my little town and told friends and anyone that would listen that you guys were going to change the way people heard music. not just listened to it. and in my opinion i was right. ive followed you guys all the way up to now with ATS. and its nice to know that there are still bands out there that can grow in their sound and not just beat listeners over the head with the same things over and over again.
its been a great 10 years. heres to the next 10

  36. tatyblue on October 9, 2010 at 2:17 pm

Hi Mike, my name is Tatiana, I’m from Panama. I have been a fan since I was 16 years old, I have loved your music since then. Hybrid was mi voice, my anger and my dispair when I was a teenager and even after that. About thins album, I m still listing to it, I m actually waiting for my special edition to arrive ^^. But offcourse I have listened to some of the songs, what I have to say is that every time I listen, I like it more and more… As time passes we evolve as human, thanks God for that, otherwise it would be quite boring hehehehe. Anyways I have to say thanks to you guys for your hard work, for letting us hear to you feeling and creativity throught songs 🙂
    Love from Panama

  37. fernandrummer on October 9, 2010 at 6:05 am

Thank you so much for make the band made for me and lots of people who grew up following the band’s sound; The people who screamed when younger with Hybrid Theory, who was preparing to an adult life with Minutes to Midnight and who’s adult enough today. I don’t know what else to say, but I just hope this boat keep sailing…

  38. musicfoodbeerbikes on October 8, 2010 at 11:24 am

I have to admit, when I first heard ATS, I went: “Meh”.

The first thing that snagged me, believe it or not, was the Oppenheimer clip – I said “HEY! I KNOW WHAT THAT IS!” and that tipped me to the idea that there was a lot more below the surface – so I dove in. I now quite like the album

I can understand people not liking it – if the elements that they liked on your previous work were missing on this one, then, yeah, I can see them not connecting with it.

What I CAN’T see is people getting angry. What gives them the right? If they can’t be open minded, t’hell with them. I am 50 friggin’ years old, and, if I thought like them, I’d still be listening to Peter Frampton. 😉

  39. live4real1104 on October 8, 2010 at 10:42 am

Hi Mike, congrats on the new album…When i first heard HT, Meteora and MTM, the songs in the album gave me feelings that i cant seems to get it from ATS, sorry to say this. Songs from previous albums after i heard it the first time, i cannot stop but continue listening to it. The lyrics, musics of those songs really get into my mind,it’s like it filled with souls&meanings in it, not just lyrics and musics. ATS is great but does not have the same *touch* anymore. I don’t have the right to judge the album good or bad based on my personal preferences.I’m just voicing out my thoughts, that’s all =).Good luck and bring more great musics to the world!!! Peace.

  40. tommytom69 on October 8, 2010 at 8:09 am

Sorry Mike I have to disagree with the rest of these people. I get your point. You’re a business man. I understand. These people you are calling “haters” made you guys big in the beginning. People are not mad you wanted to switch it up a little. People are mad because you left them in the dust for a whole new crowd. People are seeing it as you spit on them for a new fan base. You are ROCKERS! Remember that is what made you. I listened to the new CD and I heard one song that is KIND OF rock. That is it. I am not trying to insult. Just sticking up for the people who made you. Including myself.

  41. dorito82 on October 8, 2010 at 12:46 am

Now that I’m back home from my trip to the east coast, I can finally respond to this… I absolutely adore this album! From the moment I first heard The Catalyst, I fell in love with it! I was preparing myself for an album full of songs like that, but what I got was completely different, and I loved EVERY second of it.

  42. pampii on October 7, 2010 at 10:36 pm

The album is wonderful. People isnt giving it a chance. Its something new, its just dam awesome! Its original, its pure art. I really loved it. I had to listen to it several times, but the more I listen, the more I like it.
As many fans LP has been thru my hardest part of life, and helped me a lot. I love LP as you can’t imagine.
I had a great time today in Argentina’s concert. New songs, they sounded AMAZING, and made me reaaaaaally really happy listening to them (altho the volume was low, but I’m guessing ’cause sounds’ vibration issues)
Thanks! Thanks for all this years of art!

Mike you are truely outstanding i remembered the days when my dad an me used to play hybrid theory in the car when i was 4 and now im 14 i have loved all your songs and i respect the new direction you have made because all bands need change otherwise they will become boring ino this sounds extreme but one day i hope i can meet you guys for real so i can be inspirated by your creativity etc i aswell think you should create an album with this genre with all songs i understand this song was a concept album which made me cry to be quite honest because then people will realize that you are the greatest rock band to set forth in this world who can change music geners and still be amazing

  47. zeljka on October 6, 2010 at 9:48 am

    thank you for this entry.
i really don’t understand all the comments. linkin park has always been different, in every song, every album – that’s your style.

it is the biggest dream for an artist to be successfull & have a lot of fans. but the most important thing is to make music that you really want to do at this moment.
i really don’t get the people who think that you *sold out*. why? i don’t think that a band like you need more money or fame. you’ve got enough.
and about being ‘pop’? i just think that you as a band are at a point now where YOU can choose FREE what you want to release.

What a great blog, Mike. I know you’ve heard this tons of times, but you’re gonna hear it one more time Mr. =) I’m one of the fans whose been with you and the guys since the beginning. Sadly i was also one who didn’t take the transformation and growth of the band well. But with any music when i first hear it i hate it, I just don’t take change well. But after getting used to MTM, and now ATS, i love them just as much as Hybrid Theory and Meteora. You are genuinely THE best band in my opinion, and you guys will remain in my hearts and my ipod for years and years. I love you guys ❤

  50. w2ed on October 4, 2010 at 10:12 pm

Wow – thanks for saying what a lot of other bands have been saying for years.

I liked the album, and got it without knowing it was a concept album, so liking it was easier, in a way. (Yes, I had preconceived notions, but I’ve followed you for the same reason I did when I first started listening to you, so I kinda knew not to expect the same thing.)

I hope to get to see you on tour when you hit the US again.

wow!well stated Mike!I am so proud of your album… those people who hate your new album are not open-minded, they’re just stock in one genre! And I think they don’t have a taste in music.

  53. slickjack01 on October 3, 2010 at 8:50 pm

Hm… I’ve tried, I really have… But A Thousand Suns just isn’t my thing. I loved Hybrid Theory, Meteora and roughly 80% of Minutes to Midnight.

I think the reason people are saying you’ve ‘Sold Out’ is because a lot of ATS is Drum & Bass or Dubstep oriented, something that has recently gone mainstream quite exponentially and I’ll admit, I found “Waiting For the End” and “Wretches and Kings” quite catchy…But I was really hoping for songs like QWERTY, When I heard it for the first time I was ecstatic!

In summary, congratulations on trying something new, but I miss the old days

PS: Come back to NZ please 🙂

  54. dovingbird on October 3, 2010 at 3:26 pm

Thank goodness for this blog. I was with you guys when I was 14 and in high school and Meteora came out, and I was into it because it was ‘cool.’ Dropped it like a hot coal seconds after I started being made fun of for it. And then, five years later, I’m a Music major in college and dating this hot toddy who decided to hook me up with Hybrid Theory and Fort Minor’s “Rising Tied” at the same time. Mind blown, world rocked, etc etc. After those five years of musical study, I finally understood the sheer intricacies of what you guys are doing. “The Catalyst” worried me at first. The instant I listened to the entire album..everything made sense. You guys are geniuses. Keep it up.

Well said Mike. Good work telling them to GTFO. Anyone who has ever tried to develop in any way lost supporters and friends in the process, some are too cynical to accept any change whatsoever, others won’t like it even after trying to. And that can’t be helped. But as you said, good art triumphs at the end of the day, regardless of what internet trolls say about it. Come to think of it now, a lot of old ‘fans’ are not really Linkin Park fans, they’re just nu-metal fans. Once LP changes genre, they start to draw silly conclusions and make myopic condemnations.

  57. beckyloveslp on October 2, 2010 at 5:18 am

chester told MTV that people who dont like it need to find something they do like. i totally agree with both of you, yes its immature to write stuff like that, and yes they should find something they like. I havent even listened to the whole album and i think im going to enjoy it 🙂

  58. verdefluo on October 2, 2010 at 4:32 am

why are justifying yourselves? nobody likes when someone says stupid things about a long and difficult work. I hope chester said them to go to hell ^^ you’re too sensitive! I like your new album as the others, thanks to you all now I can listen to what I want, basing on my emotions

  59. thecatalyst1994 on October 2, 2010 at 1:38 am

You really did a great job, which I now enjoy and which is very appreciated. Thank you very much. Thanks to you and your album “A Thousand Suns”, I saw the world as it is. I wish you success and to continue at the same pace! Thank you!

  60. zloezlo on October 1, 2010 at 11:30 pm

I was a little surprised when I heard “The Catalyst”. Although I have some idea how the song would sound. I was shocked by comments about the song. I could not determine it’s attitude to the new sound.

When was release of the album I listened to the album and looked at the reviews. I thought, what the hell? I don’t understand why former fans say so? I could not figure out whether I liked the new style or not, and I waited two weeks to listen to the album again. And I really enjoyed it.

I was wondering if the album is so bad why did it first in sales? May be because people understand and feel that we are facing …

Thank you very much for your art! You are awesome!

  61. whoismgmt on October 1, 2010 at 10:41 pm

a thousand suns it’s a new sound and at first u really think “oh God, where ar those songs about me?” but then u listen it more and understand.
u can always find support in our hearts, Mike
    believe in u everyday.

  62. paddypandit on October 1, 2010 at 9:18 pm

Sir, I am an Indian Fan of LINKIN PARK and you.
The Album was a mix of many styles of music. You may not like it the first time you listen to it but if the lyrics are understood and the theme believed, it’s then that you can understand the essence of the album.
The People who say linkin park has sold out are jacka**es, and dont deserve to be called fans, they are , as they say for soccer fans, glory hunters.
But the best part of the album is that its not just one song which is good or is meaningful but the complete album in its own has a distinct feel to it which leaves one thinking about all the things happening. And according to me that’s more important than just banging your head

  63. lizciotti on October 1, 2010 at 8:41 pm

You are the future of music. I love watching linkin park grow and am always excited when a new album comes out. A thousand suns is so genre breaking that it’s avant-garde. You guys out-do yourself with each record. This album addresses social issues we’re facing and delivers soul-thrashing lyrics. This is the music that can change a generation. I have been a fan since hybrid theory and have always advocated my love for the band. This record transcends all that has come before and is ahead of what is to come. Please, keep making your music…you’re changing the way we (the population of lost souls) think.

  64. gaurav42 on October 1, 2010 at 8:29 pm

Wow, just wow, this album was a shock.

Not because it was a new direction, but because before this i never new music could provide such a journey. This is the best Linkin Park Album, i love your new sound, with the synths use of the bass guitar etc. Don’t listen to the haters, you have revolutionized modern rock yet again like you did with Hybrid Theory. This is your Dark side of the Moon. This is Linkin Park’s true achievement. Thanks for sticking with your fans, and doing what all your true fans want you to do, be linking park: not a conforming to a specific genre, but innovating and providing us with new musical experiences. Commendable work Mike, keep it up.

  65. lpaben62 on October 1, 2010 at 7:31 pm

I’m yours’ supporter who started from Hybrid Theory, also come from Taiwan, far away from LA.
After listening up the whole ATS, the only word I’m about to say is “thanx”, Because yours’ faith in doing the real music in yours’ mind.

  66. alexeyarendarenko on October 1, 2010 at 4:37 pm

Thank you for caring about us.
    ATS is best album ever.

  67. missleahe on October 1, 2010 at 2:22 pm

I also agree that the criticism against ATS is unfounded. I’m sure you know most of those comments are made by immature people who haven’t been exposed to enough musical genres to appreciate ATS for what it’s worth. It’s their loss in the end, and at the end of the day I’m sure you know that you can’t please everyone. It’s good to stand behind your art and defend it. I commend LP for doing something you all believed in.

Also, I just want to throw it out there that I’m probably the most “metal” listener/LP fan out there. I usually listen to Swedish death metal/Finnish gothic metal. Even so, I feel ATS is the best album of 2010, and I’ve listened to tons of new albums this year.

  68. cctjehh on October 1, 2010 at 11:09 am

personally I totally dislike it when people say thinks like the new album sucks. people may not like it, but that doesn’t make it suck… I actually think HT and ATS have a lot in common. ATS is like a debut album to a whole new sound. I love the fact that every other album from now on, is one big suprise. It can be everything, right? And I think that all those “fans” who dislike ATS may like the next album, ’cause that will be different too. I am dutch and I think dutch fans are the most lazy fans in the world… (I am half german, I am not that bad 😛 (A)) You barely got dutch fans in the LPU or LPST… and on hyves (dutch social network site, there are 15.000 fans!) ^^

  69. thegluelpfan on October 1, 2010 at 2:49 am

I couldn’t be more proud to be your fan.You are truly making a point to the whole music industry here,to all of those that focus on the radio hits and the album sales…you’re truly creating art.And in my opinion you should be happy that your album creates such big desputes-that means you’ve created something that really excites people even if it makes them mad.I love ATS and I stand behind you as always.I wish more artists out there were like you and at the same time I’m really proud to be a fan of such a great band like yourselves…keep doing what you’re doing!

  70. alyssalinkin on September 30, 2010 at 11:02 pm

I couldn’t have said it any better Mike.
I’ve loved you guys since the beginning, and that will never change. I genuinely think you guys are amazing artists and create incredible music that is different and unique. I respect and love all you guys.

  71. melbapinckney on September 30, 2010 at 8:45 pm

Thanks Mike, You’re so well-spoken, calm, straight to the point and I love that about you. “What happen to the real Linkin Park?,” they said. What the heck is that suppose to mean? You guys are doing fine and I want you to keep up with your cool and unique style of music. You got lots and lots of support here on LinkinPark.com. Fans that use to love you, now they don’t, because of ATS. Well they weren’t your fans from the beginning. Just to let you know. I love that statement you made, we love all our fans. Well, I love you guys a lot too and thank you, I feel better. KEEP ROCKING LP!

  72. missdef on September 30, 2010 at 4:14 pm

im throughly disappointed. never before have i disliked a linkin park album this much to never consider listening to the ATS again. even minutes before midnight was better than this one… im not here to debate just state my opinion. i hated it.i believe that music should evolve as well as the artist progress and sucess is all hoped for… artist should always be willing to take risk…. thats what sets them apart… but you cant please all your critics but when it seems like your disappointing your fan base most… maybe its time for a self evaluation. i don’t want ” the old sound” back i want a better sound thats still YOUR SOUND.

  73. GTPBabe on September 30, 2010 at 1:29 pm

I wrote my own response to your post mike..check it out and tell me what you think bro.

  74. armydillo on September 30, 2010 at 11:36 am

I liked some songs, but the truth is very few songs, much of the album are recordings and noise, also it is a pop sound,

  75. madirah on September 30, 2010 at 9:23 am

I have been listening to LP since Hybrid Theory… and I adore the new album… I feel LP has done justice to their fans, by maintaining their artistic integrity… in an era where we thirst for good meaningful music… LP has filled the void with ATS.

While listening to the album, the images get seared to my retinas, as if the blood in my audio veins is being pulled to a single point of crimson inspiration… tugging at the humanitarian within…

Thank you for your beautiful music.

  76. andrelinoge on September 30, 2010 at 9:06 am

Hopefully now people will stop cannibalizing and refocus on honest opinions. As someone recently said: “Every Linkin Park fan is special.” And that’s final.

  77. ikrumping on September 30, 2010 at 8:37 am

Yeah!!! You said It!!! Mike, A THOUSAND SUNS is The best youк album!!! Thank you very very much for this album. It is both what I wanted, and something I never expected to hear and was surprised! It is definitely your best work. Thank you so much for what you are doing!

  78. bob9001 on September 30, 2010 at 8:13 am

My only issue with the last two albums was Shinoda’s vocals/rapping being phased out. It seems like without his equal presence in vocals that the album sounded too much like “Out of Ashes”. Chester has an good voice, but I think he proved with going solo that he cannot carry an album by himself. In my humble opinion, without a dominating presence from Shinoda Linkin Park isn’t unique.

  79. mkeylp on September 30, 2010 at 7:12 am

irob maiden has 2 songs called ” 2 Minutes To Midnight” and ” Brighter Than A Thousand suns” and you have one album called “Minutes To Midnight” and another called “A Thousand Suns”. No wonder you have a lot of fans from the heavy metal world. lol

  80. lpswati on September 30, 2010 at 12:44 am

Maiku!.. You said it!.. I wish I was right beside you to tap you on your shoulder for writing all this! And for ATS, as well 😀 🙂 🙂 I’m just 1.5 year-old LP fan, but have loved ALL of your records like hell….. U won’t believe people see my face and recall “Linkin Park” 😀 😀 LOL And, to talk about ATS, I love the songs… 🙂 They’re again sooo meaningful, and show your efforts..! AND I WAS ASTONISHED TO LISTEN TO “When They Come For Me” 😀 ITS SO MUCH INDIAN!! 🙂 Haha…
    Your admirer,
    Swati, INDIA 🙂 🙂

  81. linkinparkforlife on September 29, 2010 at 5:04 pm

Mike, you couldn’t have put it any better! I love every album you guys have made and I love the songs on A Thousand Suns, my favorites probably; When They Come For Me, Iridescent, Waiting For the End, and really, all of the songs. People say, “I liked there old sound.”, but there is no old sound, if you listen to the songs, it’s the same Linkin Park as you guys were in Hybrid Theory. Don’t let the haters get you down (you probably won’t anyway), because you’ll always have the fans that never let you down and stay faithful to Linkin Park for life, like I will! I love you guys and hope to get the honor of going to one of your concerts. and I think you are the best rapper alive!

  82. boger7lp on September 29, 2010 at 3:24 pm

GOOD AND NEW-the voices of the whole group especially “WHEN THEY COME FOR ME” sound more organic and electronic music
BAD-pre taxed removes prominence to the instruments,
he continued to attach great importance to vocals and lyrics that instruments
THE HORRIBLE-ROBOT BOY-sound like a boy band (Nsinc-backstreth boys) this shows that there is a fine line between things and was quick to call this album something new is just the way for the new
    I hope someday achieve it

  83. surfacefactor on September 29, 2010 at 3:18 pm

I never really hated the album really….it just took me some time to adapt to the sound difference..but..Now..i think it’s probally the best album ever…!! 🙂

  84. randomrobot on September 29, 2010 at 2:24 pm

I think it’s great that there’s a band I can listen to whose music spans a great spectrum. For every mood, there’s a Linkin Park album or song. I really like ATS not just for it’s music, but for all the visuals it came with too.

But at one point I was afraid you guys were gonna go all freakin Radiohead on us and how they hate playing Creep. Are you guys gonna do that, and not play One Step Closer live because of pretentious reasons? But if you guys don’t play that song at your concerts, I guess that’s fine too.

In the end, it’s your music, your art, and we appreciate it. (most of us anyway)

  85. xehpuk on September 29, 2010 at 12:45 pm

I’m curious too, tell us some thing about the swu, and what songs i’ll listen..’cause i’m here waiting for the big day…i waited this day for a long time…

Hey Mike, I hope you read this.
I’m a real and huge fan of you guys, it’s almost 9 years that I’m living with you and every single word you said and every single voice you made. I even have a tattoo “I breathe in Linkin Park world” and I love your soft songs but… I don’t like A Thousand Suns! It’s not because I love heavy metal music or sth like that… It’s because it feels so strange for me, and I don’t really feel you guys in it. You changed and I respect that, but you have to accept that we can’t change as fast as you did. You changed through 3 years, of course all of your fans knew that you’re gonna change because you’re always in different ways

Every new direction in music needs some time to get along with. Some say LP music isn’t as good as it was before. Yeah, the sound is different, but as I listen to ATS I hear the same voices I’ve heard before and loved it. I believe that every song LP wrote could only come not as disrespectful act to all the fans, but only as a reward. A Thousand Suns isn’t what I’ve expect it to be, it’s much more. Thank you for that 😉 (best wishes from Lithuania)

  93. zahralp on September 29, 2010 at 9:36 am

  95. ness429 on September 29, 2010 at 9:14 am

Mike, thanks for your thoughtful message. One of the reasons I love LP so much is the dedication to your art and fans. Everyone should be able to evolve over the years, and I appreciate that the band is willing to stay true to themselves and not to what will just sell best. Frankly, it would get really old to hear rehashes of old songs for the next 30+ years. I love LP from Hybrid Theory to ATS and whatever else comes our way, because as a 38 year old fan and who is the mother of a 9 year old fan, LP has something for all of us.

  96. raytanch on September 29, 2010 at 9:12 am

Mike, after HT/Meteora/MTM, I rememebred asking myself: what would LP next release be like? Frankly, I was looking forward to an LP release that pushes the level of music creativity to the next level. I just started listening to ATS two days ago. It’s different and I sort of ‘digesting’ every track slowly just like how I did with LP previous release. I can ‘hear’ the amount of time/effort/creativity that have been poured into ATS. I just wanna say..it’s worth it. Keep up the journey.

  97. doradotlic on September 29, 2010 at 8:15 am

thank you for saying this mike. but i have to be honest and say this. when i was listening to ATS first time, i didn’t actually like it. it was kinda… weird and it sounded new (as you said). but now, i really like it. it is great. it does sound new, and that is actually great. and again, thank you for saying all this and thank you for ATS, dude 🙂

mike, thank you for putting this out there. so many people dont realize that what you guys are doing right now is absolutely incredible.
the other day my mum (who introduced me to HT when it was released), said that she has never heard anything like it and that it has “created a new genre”. i agree, i dont think ive heard anything much like ATS, it truly is inspiring and beautiful. you guys are always trying new stuff and i love it. looking forward to seeing you in brisbane man.
    i am a believer. 😀

Hi Mike, thanks for taking the time out to write such a wonderful piece. Either way you can’t win, had LP continued to make music like HT I am pretty sure that there would of been critics out there saying hateful things. So just do what you guys feel is right, I’ll be supporting LP all the way.

FINALLY!! its about time someone from LP said something. Great post
its weird, everytime i would introduce a new LP song to one of my mates they would say something like “The old LP was better” or “LP have gone soft”.
it annoys me that people dont even give it a go before disliking it. i always explain that there are few songs that sound similar. i guess HT and Meteora attracted metal fans and since then they’v just not been happy with the new stuff.
i have been a loyal fan since i picked up meteora first and i like to think that LP’s music has grown as i have. im 18 now and like others, have had ups and downs growing up but LP has always had a song to make things better. THANKS LP

  105. AThousandSunsLP on September 28, 2010 at 8:53 pm

Mike you’re 30 and more and you’re justifying your work with idiotic kids who don’t even know what music is. their comments about ATS don’t have any sense and are NOT the official thought of everyone about it. they want horrific screams and satanic songs. I don’t think you are that kind of band. ATS, like it or not, is #1 everywhere. so relax. internet isn’t a source for comments, it’s filled with idiots. and by the way, you do whatever the fk you want. do not excuse yourself.

  106. lpfmfan on September 28, 2010 at 8:49 pm

Mike, first kudos..AMAZING post, seriously I’m glad you said this because I have friends that loved the “old” Linkin Park and now they’ve said how much they’ve changed and, well exactly what you were saying, I’m so glad you wrote a post about this, now I can fully explain to them what’s going on in y’alls head. 🙂

Btw, I LOVE the album, yes it’s different. But I listen to a variety of music, I love all sorts of genres, so it was very easy for me to get used to Linkin Park’s new sound. I seriously cannot stop listening to this album! Even on Linkin Park Revenge…I’ve found myself to play only the new songs, none of the old ones! ha! :b
    Take care, Mike!

  107. williambuck on September 28, 2010 at 8:35 pm

This diff to LP’s old stuff but that doesnt mean its bad… I loved the old stuff and i frankly love the new stuff… Such an EPIC album, each track flows into the other… Its not just music for musics sake, its a sonic journey…

The direction LP is taking is exciting!!!

Mike, keep doin what your doin…

  108. rubymj on September 28, 2010 at 7:10 pm

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us Mike, even though you didn’t have to. People seem to think that you guys have completely abandoned your roots, but there are still plenty of elements of old-school LP in ATS. It just has so much more depth, dimension, passion, and heart that it’s completely different than your other albums. It would be helpful for certain fans to remember that you guys aren’t 23 anymore; you have families, kids, you’ve been through over 10 years in the music business, you’ve grown up. If you hadn’t changed anything about your sound, it would speak worse than anything, and you wouldn’t be around anymore. Thanks for the last decade 🙂 Can’t wait for the tour!

  109. keykey2010 on September 28, 2010 at 6:53 pm

Wow If people don’t like it then they should probably not listen. That one dude was probably talking bout “When they Come For Me”. You didn’t say F the haters but you probably should have! The next album u should go country to piss folks off.

  110. franchan10 on September 28, 2010 at 5:55 pm

I will post again and hope you see this.
You must advertise this album just the way you did in the article above, A 50 minute song / gapless album and even give a hint on the true meaning of the album. If not the haters will still keep on coming and posting an article on where mostly linkin park/ fort minor fans will see it is redundant

  111. bradsheaks on September 28, 2010 at 5:38 pm

You know ive been a fan since before the band was popular. Ive been a fan of chester’s side project and Fort Minor. Im still one of you biggest fans and you have my support 100% and always will. You guys stay true to yourselves and write the best music to reach people who actually have souls unlike blogger assholes who have nothing better to do because they think every album of yours should sound the same. And your right they listen to a few tracks and judge the rest of the album in their horrible tastes. Regardless i just get tired of hater’s to constantly bringing up “hybrid theory” and i know you get tired of it to. The album is amazing and congrats you guy’s on #1

  112. sweetnlime on September 28, 2010 at 4:42 pm

either way when any new album from a band thats been absent for almost 2 years, people (meaning the fans)expect some sort of greatness to just pop out and viola! instant gratification: people will love it. But it didn’t turn out that way and I say F&@% ’em! people don’t like, well then they don’t like it. If you love what you guys have done then I say that’s awesome because I for one love ATS for the fact that it’s different and the undeniable sound that we as fans can still say “it’s Linkin Park damn it!”

  113. thechesterdean on September 28, 2010 at 4:16 pm

This is the opposite of a “sell out” album; don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. If money and popularity was the goal, the safe bet would be to try to make Hybrid Theory again.

I’ve been a fan since 2001 and seen your different transformations. And whover is calling you “sold outs” must be people that only think they know the “idea” of you. You’re doing an amazing job and I’m proud to call myself a fan of LINKIN PARK!. I’m a believer!

  114. davereese7 on September 28, 2010 at 3:06 pm

I saw a commercial for Hybrid Theory around Christmas time ten years ago so I asked for it and Linkin Park has been my favorite band ever since! I have loved every album because they are all unique in there own way. You do not know how excited I am to see you in concert again I hope you do a big North American tour. When I would get criticism for my published ideas my friend told me that you are going to get more negative comments than positive because the people that like it have nothing to say except thanks.
    thank you Linkin Park!

  115. St.Owner on September 28, 2010 at 2:56 pm

I think that changing up your sound was a good idea. I did not think so at first, back when I was 15 and into songs that make me want to hate everyone around me. But now I am a couple years older, and I love A Thousand Suns, and I actually prefer it, along with Minutes To Midnight to Hybrid Theory and Meteora.

If I were to suggest anything, it would be that you write more club bangers. Wretches And Kings is so damn great lol.

  116. jenerosity on September 28, 2010 at 2:25 pm

It seems there are several reasons why some are less than enthusiastic about the album. With concept albums, you need to have an attention span to fully enjoy the journey. Sadly, that is a trait that is lacking in people, especially lately. Blame Facebook, Twitter, things like that, I suppose. Second, it may just be me, but I’m a bit of a music snob; I greatly enjoy an organic, stripped down sound akin to MTM. I’m also a multi-instrumentalist on several “geeky” instruments, especially woodwinds, so blame that. I wasn’t a fan of ATS at first, I admit. But, I listened to it more, and enjoyed it more each time. Perhaps when a band pushes the boundaries, it’s more of an acquired taste

  117. Hell_enia on September 28, 2010 at 1:58 pm

Wow.. So many comments on this one 🙂
Once again I have to thank u, for someone said things straight finally!
U don’t sell music. U create art. And it’s logical that ur pieces must evolve during the years. That’s an obligation to us. Your true fans.
We love ur new sound. It has a new meaning.

Plus, the change u did on ur new album means that u don’t make the same pieces over + over again like others, no need to name (they are quite many).
Keep it going. We grew up with u. And ur music, ur moves about people who need care and ur interest to even sit down one day and talk to us through a webcam, blog, u name it, is what it makes it worth all these years that we’ve been your fans.

  118. ShinigamiPWN on September 28, 2010 at 1:41 pm

    PWNT once again, Mr. Shinoda.

  119. stingerlp on September 28, 2010 at 1:13 pm

Thank you Mike a lot for your thoughts. Very interesting to read as always. And i’m agree with all that you said and I actually was saing the same thing to people after MTM release and now after ATS came out (about “to make Hybrid Theory again” in particular).

For Russian speaking fans – here is a complete translation of this Mike’s post: http://lpcrimea.com/lZa

  120. janine1978 on September 28, 2010 at 1:13 pm

Hi Mike, thanks for your detailed message. First of all, best wishes for the # 1 album ATS, you had better not be able to make – a great and artful work. I also think that this “hater”, are very disrespectful – but I think there’sa either ignorance or pure envy of the people behind it. In modern times, this disrespect is very grown up compared to the others – whether at work or among men in general. I find that very sad, but we can all work to other people and be a role model by making it fool you properly. You are my role model – so we go ahead. LP ROCKS …

  121. A Place for Release on September 28, 2010 at 1:11 pm

    Hi Mike!
I would say that your post simply wonderful. The difference has to be willing or not.A decade has passed since the release Hybrid Theory this time was very good, do not know if you agree but neither the band nor you fans can stay in the monotony and challenges need to be living to live forever, but I guess you know so :).We realize when we heard the cd embarked on a journey hyper, super and mega cool.A 50 minute music you even as they say. When I agreed to read with you every word.To give my opinion want to say I got the cd and heard I went on a different vibe as never completely antes.Liked and approved
Excuse my English bad for comment have to use the translator.

  122. silentchaos11 on September 28, 2010 at 12:36 pm

Thank you for giving your thoughts.
I’ve been a fan since the very beginning, Hybrid Theory. I consider myself a hardcore LP fan and one for life. What I love about Linkin Park is that you guys have matured over the years and you show that with every album. As I get older my choice of music matures and when Linkin Park releases an album their music matures with me.
I just wanna say keep doing what you guys are doing, your dedicated fans such as myself will always be behind you.

  123. lorenalp on September 28, 2010 at 12:36 pm

thanks for the post mike 🙂 i think people must listen the whole album before hate it! i love the new sounds of “a thousand suns”

  124. linkinrebel on September 28, 2010 at 12:26 pm

I think some of you guys have to consider the word “haters” isnt referring to people who simply don’t like the album but still tell their opinion in a respectful way but to people who insult Linkin Park for their work which is obviously not fair since the band has put an enormous effort into creating that masterpiece.
People also tend to forget the band started with their carrier in an uncomparable way. Other bands have the chance to grow as artists before being watched by millions of people cause they get famous by releasing their third or fourth album whereas LP had to deal with such an audience from the very beginning and now that they’ve matured some people just refuse to accept it.

  125. linkinparktjejen on September 28, 2010 at 12:19 pm

To me, you guys are still the best band in the world and nothing can ever change that! Keep your great work up and I’ll see you in October!

  126. Izzo on September 28, 2010 at 11:45 am

Yeah, first I was sceptical about all the ATS stuff, 30sec. samples and Catalyst dissapointed me, and deep in my heart I still was longing and expecting for another HT. When I started to play the album, after Burning in the Skies I was like: “WHAT THE F*UCK? Where did they go? What happened? Pop, Electro?” And yes, I really hate electro music cuz appreciate songs with soul and hardwork. Still I knew you guys would never go the easy way. Anyway. After I heard Blackout it was like such a lame song, and sorry, I still don’t like it much, but the thing that crossed my mind was ” This sucks, but without it something would be missing.”

  127. stormrider00 on September 28, 2010 at 11:31 am

I feel you Mike. There were actually no disrespectful messages on the album. I agree with you 100%. To people who dislike the album, I know you have your opinions about it, and that’s okay. What ****** me off are idiots who aren’t patient enough to listen to it patiently and just call it crap simply because it sounds different.

  128. awakedreamer on September 28, 2010 at 11:19 am

Thank you for this post . I’m always arguing with people about the “selling out ” thing .

“As far as I know, “selling out” means compromising the integrity of your band/music in exchange for money or popularity.”
You’re right a lot of people think this way ,when i say “Linkin Park is my favourite band ” most of the time people tells me that i have bad tastes in music because of this .

It pissed me off several times in the past , but now i don’t give a f**k . I support you and (i hope) always will .
Keep surprising us and make good music . See you on tour 🙂

    Michael, From France .

  129. 3infinity on September 28, 2010 at 10:37 am

You haven’t had these in a long time!
This is exactly what I wanted to hear from you, now if only you could make a video of you reading this and post it to Youtube so the haters would realize it!

  130. shumass on September 28, 2010 at 10:16 am

Yo mike you pretty much took the words out of my mouth with what you posted I love the album! I have been a fan since HT and i was 9 years old so i can say every album has had an impact to me in everyway so keep rockin it with LP!!

  131. AldA on September 28, 2010 at 10:02 am

Thanks Mike! I’ve already heard so many comments about ATS! I couldn’t have my own opinion bacause those comments made me feel so confused. But you really helped me to realize what this new album is about. LP is alive!!!

  132. hapagirl on September 28, 2010 at 9:33 am

You know, Mike – I love you guys and have loved everything you’ve done up until the moment I heard the most recent single… BUT after reading this post I am willing to give the entire album a chance. So thank you for reminding me to keep an open mind. Peace.

  133. Linkin Theorist on September 28, 2010 at 9:09 am

    Nicely said.
I’m a fan since the HT era. True, I like the old stuff a little more than the new stuff BUT because of one simple fact: I grew up listening to HT and Meteora. They made me a fan – I won’t ever forget that. Other than that, I can’t find any more reasons of why I should put HT and/or Meteora higher than MTM and ATS. Yes, I do need time to get over with the fact that you guys are changing and maturing (I need some time to get adjusted with something new) but I also understand that the new album is art, and art is creativeness.
ATS is a pure result of that. I respect that.
But basicly, you guys are still Linkin Park. Your sound is just different from the previous.

  134. pekigirl on September 28, 2010 at 9:03 am

I think that being a fan is not just like the music of a band.. is more than that.. being a fan is care about the band, understand the band and some people think that they’re fans but they’re wrong.. they just like band’s music.. true believers will always support the band and they will give them a chance.. I admit that at the beginning I was a little worried about this new album but I decided to trust them and give LP a chance and I listen the hole album again and again.. and now I love it.. this cd is different.. yeah I know.. so what? LP will always LP.. And I love their creativity (:
I really love you guys and conratulations for this AMAZING album!! (L)

  135. my4okfanlp on September 28, 2010 at 8:54 am

Back in 2008 I caught myself thinking: “In 2010, Linkin Park will release an album, especially not like the sound of their past work, I was ready for change, for me they were clear!
ATS – album – a masterpiece! I have not heard anything like it. I am happy to experiment, Mike! Haters will always be, they always were, just waiting for the moment to write crap, regardless of the content of the album (I’m sure that 60% of the haters, not even translated the lyrics from English into their native language, while 20% did not even delved into the essence of the album).

  136. 108linkinpark on September 28, 2010 at 8:49 am

ok mike i completely understand this but what we all want to know is will you ever release an album – even slightly similar to hybrid theory. Dont get me wrong I love MOST of the songs on the new album but i prefer Hybrid Theory and Meteora. No matter what tho I am and will always be a hardcore Linkin Park fan for life – it would just be better if you did songs similar to Hybrid Theory and Meteora (even some of minutes t midnight like Given Up & No More Sorrow

  137. hulasusieq on September 28, 2010 at 8:46 am

First of all, thank you Mike & Linkin Park for creating a beautiful masterpiece of humanity. “A Thousand Suns” beautifully displays a myriad of human emotions & human frailty. It doesn’t matter who you are (celeb or not), we are all part of history. This album is a great work of art! It’s created w/passion, love, & pure dedication. You’ve successfully conveyed this in “ATS” & your written thoughts above. Basically, you hit the nail on the head! 🙂 United we stand, divided we fall. Unfortunately a lot will fall..& have.
I LOVE this album & the others before it. I look forward w/great anticipation to ALL the future “artwork” Linkin Park will create!

  138. pinguninjitsu on September 28, 2010 at 8:40 am

❤ I've been a fan since HT. I grew up listening and I'm a fan for life. It always makes me sad when people refer to the band as "sell outs" because I don't see it, and clearly ATS was insanely risky and not catered to the masses. I love it, its amazing, and I can't wait for the US tour <3.

Thank you for the statement though, I can at least refer the haters here ❤

I love Linkin Park ❤ keep being awesome ^-^!!!

  139. the LOST initiatve on September 28, 2010 at 8:25 am

Mike, let me just say a couple things:

First off, I’ve been with your music since I was a teen. I grew up with Hybrid Theory and Meteora. As I got older though, I moved away from the kind of music you guys were putting out. I became more of a music snob. Listening to bands like Radiohead or Joy Division etc. To be honest, I kind of stopped taking you guys seriously. When A Thousand Suns dropped, it floored me on my ass. I have never been proven wrong so much in my life. This album is beautiful, and I’m just in awe at much you guys have grown as an artist.

  140. asianotter on September 28, 2010 at 8:24 am

I am glad you addressed this matter with the open honesty that you live your life. You have been saying for well over a year, that you guys wanted to challenge yourselves and create something bigger than all of you combined and break out of any conceived notion of what LP is. That all of you knew that some would love it, some would hate it, and all you were really hoping for is for people to be open-minded enough to give a genuine listen. The backlash after the release of ATS only proves to me that the inherent problem with people is that they DO NOT LISTEN! And futhermore, are completely missing the meaning and message behind ATS! For me, ATS is the defining record of the decade.

  141. chiragddude on September 28, 2010 at 7:53 am

This was something I really wanted to tell many of my friends of 2 kinds (broadly)
    1. who say that they were Linkin Park Fans but, now they won’t give a sh*t if the band goes “crap”
    2. Who say Linkin Park are just a commercial band selling “sh*t” for money

Anyone who has seen “Meeting of A Thousand Suns” won’t say that. The whole process would have been much more difficult for u guys to undergo than us to believe it to be true and really if u guys wanted to sell high, u could prefer a redo of “Hybrid Theory” rather than experimenting with ur sound. I believe in you guys and I always will. Thanks for this post Mike, Now I can really share a link to this to the 2 categories.

  142. brownie3794 on September 28, 2010 at 7:51 am

I’ve been with LP since Minutes To Midnight, and then i got all of their old albums later on (Meteora, Hybrid Theory). I honestly have to say, i like you guys old stuff, but your new stuff is way better, in my opinion. I like the twist you guys did with A Thousand Suns, its my favorite album, (aside from Minutes To Midnight). Keep up with the good music, and the awesome music videos, and…… thats it. Well said Mike. 😀

  143. rockermeg on September 28, 2010 at 7:27 am

I never understood the argument that Linkin Park were selling out. The fact that so much thought has gone into this entire process completely erases any part of that argument and it’s obvious people saying it really aren’t sure what it means, but like to throw the term around. I get annoyed with the same people saying Metallica sold out. Metallica have not sold out they’re just not stoned 24/7 anymore; they have families. I say the same thing for you guys, but not to that extent – you’re older and a lot has changed since 1999.
Some albums you can listen to and hear the honesty in the music. It’s different but it’s still real. And it’s good. This is what I say about A Thousand Suns

  144. shockwavez on September 28, 2010 at 7:26 am

    nice speech mike 😀
I like the new sound..it’s a new side of LP and that makes me more excited for new songs!!!
I’m proud to can be a fan of Linkin Park! Thank you guys!

  145. dizzordr on September 28, 2010 at 7:26 am

    Yo, Mike.
Just wanted to say, this album is one of the most inspiring pieces of art I have ever experienced. Even the idea that you were willing to take the band in such a different direction is inspiring.
You’ve grown up as a band. The lyrics no longer apply to a phase of awkwardness and angst that most of us experience in our lives, but to a greater cause. They’re selfless and meaningful, more so than ever. The music is fantastic. It’s refreshing, and seems to touch on many genres and sounds that the world needs more of.
Most of all, though, you affected me. You’ve made me see that no matter what people say, we need to keep growing. Something old LP couldn’t do.
    Thank you.

  146. Julian on September 28, 2010 at 7:13 am

Very well said, makes me more prouder to be your fan, keep up the amazing work LP!

  147. lycon17 on September 28, 2010 at 6:57 am

When you guys released the stems of the Catalyst, your 1st single, it pretty much ruined the experience for me, and listening to the full length version for the first time, it failed to excite me.
IMO, Waiting for the End shud’ve been your first single. Its so, so :-D. And after listening to the whole album in continuity, EVERYTHING made sense. The songs and the theme are so well woven together, it really takes you on a journey. This is definitely better than HT and meteora.
The Catalyst wasn’t the best choice for a single, and that is what made a lot of fans skeptical abt ATS.
All in all, you’ve been SUCCESSFUL 😀

  148. arfizibourdie on September 28, 2010 at 6:43 am

    helo mike.

Don’t worry Mike and co. In Malaysia, you guys got full support from us. Ignore the critics because they just say whatever they think without thinking that music industry nowadays are sick and without u guys, they all are dead. it’s not a sin to make new concept and a concept that helps people around the world.
One thing for sure, u guys did an amazing job since the Hybrid Theory days and to all the haters, they are only jealous considering your success in every album produced. And big respect to Mike ,Chester, Rob (my idol), Joe, Brad ,and Dave for still trusting each other for a long time to produce ‘Unbreakable’ band called LINKIN PARK.

  149. lkiki13 on September 28, 2010 at 6:38 am

Thanks for clearing things up Mike. I do love your “old” sound, but if LP had kept making albums just like HT and Meteora, then those same haters would have been saying that everything just sounds the same and LP wasn’t good at anything else. All those haters just want something to fuss about. Honestly, since I recieved A Thousand Suns through the presale and listened to it countless times, it has become my favorite album of all time. Its beautiful, unique, amazing, and just pure GENIUS. No matter what you guys have put out, from HT to A Thousand Suns, I have loved and appreciated and I thank you so much for them. And to all those haters out there, LP has not gone anywhere xP

  150. gikkoza on September 28, 2010 at 6:32 am

Linkin park changed…they sound quite different from THE “hybrid theory” ,”meteora” and “M2M” , and yeah,it sick too
BUT I’M lOVIN IT >=)…the album is epic like other LP albs. and ready to hear more from you guys…I don’t know about others but I’m ready to extend my horizon for creativity …

    THX 4 UR MUSIC!!!

  152. mochachocalounge on September 28, 2010 at 6:25 am

Actually…I’m going to be honest here. I will defend every fan who doesn’t like this album (and rightly so, everyone is entitled to an opinion to be proud of). Calling us “haters” is unfair, some of you even use abusive language towards us, we’ve probably listened to the album more times than a “believer” as we WANT to like it but we simply can’t. The album doesn’t justify LP moving to a new genre: its lacking something, it has a great start but a bad finish and where exactly did LP want to go with it? I love LP I really do and always will, I also appreciate you, Mike, for explaining your view but this album is a disappointment and I WILL be looking forward to the next one. 🙂

  153. orionwong on September 28, 2010 at 6:22 am

Mike, i juz wanna say. I really love reading your thesis! You just taught me another thing: study both your believers and haters.
Btw, i think art is not supposed to be judged by ppl. Instead, art is supposed to be appreciate. thats my point of view. Moreover, this remind me one of your songs – High Voltage “there ain’t no label for this sh*t. ppl always try to put a label on it, so they could water it down…”

  154. abhisheksethi653 on September 28, 2010 at 6:20 am

You are right , Mike ….Whatever you did was great…
The biggest mistake of my life I made was by previewing the tracks first and saying that the album ATS was not so good in the first go …
I am your very big fan and will always be 😀
And thank you for mentioning The Bhagawat Gita and our god Vishnu in your album ….

  155. nikkiann0100 on September 28, 2010 at 6:19 am

Nicely said Mike! I think people just need to give the album a chance to realize it’s full potential and maybe there wouldnt be such negative comments. It really is amazing!

  156. chilehd on September 28, 2010 at 6:18 am

Hey mike, i think LP screw up what the hardcore fans wanted with that catalyst single, is a good song but is hard to digest. By the way, blackout its a very very good song, i have it my top 5 lp songs I also liked the messenger, chester have the best voice for that kind of stuff. I know that lp will never eeee–ee-ever make another hybrid theory, but sometimes you need to listen what people says, im not a hater, i wish the best to LP for ever. PD: Meteora and minutes to midnight are my favourites too, dont get then aside.

  157. David Wood on September 28, 2010 at 5:29 am

Hi Mike, first I have to say I love HT and Meteora, they have such an awesome blend. So when I got my ATS in the mail I was pretty excited. Now this album is VERY different then what I was expecting, but it’s still a great piece of music and I’ll be listening to it for a long time. Since it’s only a concept album it’s silly for people to get up-in-arms about it.

But the big question I have is, why have the the albums gone from being free of any type of swearing (HT and Meteora), to needing PA stickers (MTM and ATS)? Was this a conscious decision? This really bothers me because I don’t like swearing in any form. Can we get downloads of the edited songs?

  158. DeniseRashidi on September 28, 2010 at 5:28 am

For the people who didn’t liked it at first:

Sometimes music is like food. When a dish was prepared by someone else, it tastes different. It depends on how to use an item. Someone should not look at different things with the same view, although it is in the same ‘category’.

You couldn’t have said it better. I’m a fan since the Meteora era and to tell the truth I was really curious to her this album and anxious the same time; anxious cause I didn’t know what to expect and cause I wasn’t sure if I was gonna like te new sound. To make a ling story short, I loved ATS more than any other record, even HT. I’m really proud if you guys and what you accomplished with this record and all I can say is that yes, it’s a new sound but deep inside we know it’s Linkin Park.
As for the “haters”, everyone has their own opinion but it’d be great if they could express it in a better, kinder way and not call you names or anything.

  160. Sheba Lp on September 28, 2010 at 5:08 am

wow Mike ………. what an awesome speech your blog was . I love ATS . The sound , the music , the lyrics and all , everything is just great and this is why LP is UNIQUE ! Those who do not consider this album cool are just fools !Hope you have a safe and wonderful journey for the upcoming tour . ALL THE BEST TO LP ! keep rocking ..you will live in our hearts forever !

  161. jehsta on September 28, 2010 at 4:57 am

you’re right mike, but I don’t think it’s good to split your fanbase in “old” and “new”lp fans.i also don’t think it’s good to critizize people who don’t like ATS and say they should listen more often to the songs(like some comments said).some fans really listened to it,but still miss something in the songs.i like ATS,but i also miss such songs as bleed it out, easier to run, from the inside…perhaps you could find a solution for people like me(releasing demos from meteora on lpu10!!!:)).or you could name some bands who makle music like you did in HT etc.(because you said you have heared many of them)

  162. 26pj on September 28, 2010 at 4:57 am

I like to make a point here, that everbody is entitled to have their own opinion. u like it or dislike it, just move on. Constructive criticism is somthing else, but the way people are being so mean & obscene while making comments that cannot be tolerated under any circumstances, u cannot be that derogatory. i hope u would agree.

  163. sifucp on September 28, 2010 at 4:48 am

    Hey Mike,

I don’t know why the haters are hating like they do, I mean you guys still have all of your elements – rapping, screaming, DJ, and the rock.
ATS is of course very different, but as a fan I appreciate the new direction that you guys moved into, because apart from the fact that ATS is fresh, exciting and great to listen to, it has balance, a true masterpiece!

You are also my favorite rapper (Also a Fort Minor fan), and as a fan I want to thank you for keeping on rapping – ‘When the come for me’ and ‘Wretches and Kings’ – that’s what I’m talking about!

Loved your music since Hybrid Theory, and I remain a fan.
    Well done LP!

  164. eidzanzeille on September 28, 2010 at 4:39 am

To Mike and the rest of LP..just do what u are happy doing. There are still thousands (even millions) of us who love u since Hybrid Theory and continue doing so. How can we not when we can feel the effort and love poured out on each album..Continue making beautiful music!

  165. lprullzbg on September 28, 2010 at 4:34 am

Hey Mike! I want you to know that I’m 100% with you and will always stay behind Linkin Park. I love you since day one and I’ll never forget the waiting for all your albums and how unbelievable satisfied I felt after every one of them. But I gotta admit – the most exciting of all was A Thousand Suns. Just the way all the messages was coming out and every day more exciting than the previous. Thank you for those extra things! And about the music – I think this is the most creative thing that came out in the past 10 years in the music industry. So creative that many peoples can’t really get it and embrace it. But I growed with your music and I think ATS is your best work so far. Long live LP!

  166. daussay on September 28, 2010 at 4:30 am

‘measure of real success isn’t sales, numbers, and chart position. It’s about a connection with a dedicated fan base and a chance to introduce people to a fresh new sound’ thats why i luv LP more than my own pc…..
the haters are just don’t understand and making everything turn upside down…..see Mike never judge them, the haters are…….and thanks mike for the new album, although some of them are not the ‘best’ but i really like the new ‘things’ you put it in XD have a nice day MIKE!!!! and sorry for any bad comments……^^

  167. vitalee00 on September 28, 2010 at 4:23 am

Mike, first i wanna say thank you for all the beatiful songs that you guys have brought to us. i really don’t care how those ” hater” think about ATS or LP. just throw myself into your songs …As you said before, ATS is a map,a book,a adventure, maybe it’s a little bit different ,but so what? It’s made by Linkin Park, that’s the only reason i listen to it. we love you not only because you’ve made Hybrid Theory,Meteora and Minutes To Midnight, but you always give us a kind of freshness. we all are expecting your new tour, waiting for your awsome performance.. 🙂

  168. jacrid on September 28, 2010 at 4:08 am

@nikmanlp: Of course it’s okay if you don’t like ATS and you’re not because of this. I know plenty of people who don’t like it but I don’t mind because they don’t whine about it constantly. They knew LP wouldn’t stay on the same road, so they accepted it. There is still HT, Meteora and also other Bands than Linkin Park they can listen to. Those people I do respect. But not those who are KINDA telling LP and they’re fans that they did the wrong thing (by doing what they like / want) because they don’t like ATS. And sadly, that’s mostly the case.

  169. Aditya_the_warrior_within on September 28, 2010 at 4:04 am

well said mike. Linkin Park will always remain Linkin Park thats why we love and respect you. We know what you and your music stand for and we stand aside you for the same!

  170. hungshin on September 28, 2010 at 3:44 am

mike..i think you dont need to care about all people says about ATS…i am being fans of LINKIN PARK since hybrid theory..i know that you guys change the music style all the time..and THAT’S make you guys AWESOME..cause nobody can doit just like u guys..! keep it up MIKE!..THE CATALYST=LEGEND!

  171. nikmanlp on September 28, 2010 at 3:37 am

“I, for example, belive in you & all that you guys do.”
reading things like that makes me sad. The world wouldn’t be the same today if everyone aggreed on everything just because their idols (or gods or sovereigns) did it. Why should I listen to music that I wouldn’t like if it was from another band?!
“IMO the prize for their Ignorance.”
the only point of ignorance I can see here is people who can’t accept others who don’t like ATS. I don’t really like it. It’s not what I enjoy listening to and I always loved LP’s work. Am I a bad fan now just because I made up my own opinion? I’m tired of disrespectful fans. I’m not brainless.

  172. 26pj on September 28, 2010 at 3:32 am

Linkin Park is unique, & there is nothing can go wrong with them. It is as simple as that.

  173. chester003 on September 28, 2010 at 3:28 am

whooa… mike… i thought you have exploded or something but saying that aloud professionally is what i like about you, 😀 yes, you cant please anyone, fine. as you said, (or maybe chester said) if you like it, then stay, if you dont like it, go somewhere else. and yes i also agree that some people tend to listen to NOISE because they pretend to be tough and they have a little less self confidence. why dont they OPEN THEIR MINDS, try to understand the message. if its too bothersome, aww too bad, there’s something wrong in you. cant appreciate art? low IQ? lols.

    -James CHESTER™

  174. lplovei on September 28, 2010 at 3:07 am

Your mostly right about people being critical about something they have’nt heard. The “haters” got all mad and questionable after August 2nd, instead of Sept. 14th. Nobody can base an opinion of an album after they’ve only the tinniest part of it, and that goes for saying you hate it or like it. The part of ATS that doesn’t go well with them is that they want noise, just guitat and drums, not geniune music and lyrics. Side Comment: ATS was very well out together. I listened to it cover to cover, as you requested, everything makes sense. Chester had a great idea with the single-track album.

  175. smokins on September 28, 2010 at 2:18 am

linkin park started to suffer from music racists since minutes to midnight, the thing is some people think of softer music that doesn’t have heavy guitars in the mix as pop or something gay, and thats because they have little brains and almost no self confidence, so they pretend to be tough by listening to NOISE all the time..

  176. enjadreal on September 28, 2010 at 2:13 am

as i heard the catalyst first, i was really shocked bout how big the changes are. but as i heard the lyrics of the catalyst, and later on, of the full album of a thousand suns, they really touched my heart like all those other lyrics from hybrid theory, meteora, minutes to midnight.
And: as i heard ats first, i REALLY felt like i’m on a journey that includes all our worlds, all the people and this superficial thing called our society.
I also wanna thank you and the whole band for those emotions you know to express so well. I think lots of people feel exactly like this.

  177. myaus2j on September 28, 2010 at 2:11 am

Mike, we will always support you and guys, cause I, for example, belive in you & all that you guys do. I know that you NEVER can do some sh*t, cause you are professionals & the best. Hope to hear your next 20 new albums with my grandchildren 🙂

  178. livvvv17 on September 28, 2010 at 2:06 am

Linkin Park is still here! I think that you guys are creative, talented and artists.Artists always change …like Linkin Park.Things can’t be always the same way, and that’s natural..Maybe A Thousand Suns weird for the people at first ,but that’s beacuse they have to use their brains … I think it’s not the question of “goood, not good”.
Personally I really love the way LP walks on. The more time passes the better your music becomes. I still hear the essence of the REAL Linkin Park .Simply ,cages of music genres just don’t fit for LP.Because you’re better than that
sorry for my bad English 🙂

  179. jagta on September 28, 2010 at 2:04 am

I think you shouldnt care it !! becz we are still here …in the simplest term, you can see every second of people joining to lp.com..IF they disliked the new album…They wouldnt have joind or come…only care your job becz we are still here for ıt !!>> you guys always care us by writing unique lyrıcs , talking us about your upcoming things , and asking us for your future plans that are about concerts
ıf LP is this …I definetely wont quit you ! LP deserves all of them
PS: hence I love PUSİNG ME AWAY and NO MORE SORROW tracks..I dont look for any same tracks which are in the new album.. but I can replace the “WHEN THEY COME FOR ME” song instead of them…thnx for all of them !

  182. jacrid on September 28, 2010 at 1:52 am

I hope those “haters” finally can comprehend your reasons.
But it’s not like you had to justify. Linkin Park fans should know that it’s impossible to put your music in a certain genre and that there have always been “hints” that you guys are changing your music style (and not just since M2M).
After an Interview with you it occured to me that Breaking the Habit sounds different from the other songs, but it wasn’t the only one. I guess people were so focused on the guitar and screaming, they failed to hear all the other elements in the songs that weren’t there before. Now, people start to realize that you WERE CHANGING and they can’t cope with it.. IMO the prize for their Ignorance.

Here in Brazil we say: there are people to speak well, but to bad there are millions. I listen to LP since 1999, have 36 years and what I noticed was the band’s maturation. Love the new album, as I loved the albums in the past. My kids 5 and 11 years, listen and love you too. I appreciate the thanks and recognition of who really matters to you healthy fans. Growth is the natural human being and how good you are risking much to make us happy. Thanks Mike!! I see you in Brazil on October 11. P.S Sorry for my bad English, I use a translator of texts to speak with you.

    Dear Mike
I remember, that in one interview Chester said, that You wanted to create album, through which people will feel the influence of drugs, without taking their. This is it! Only really GOOD artists and geniuses can do something THAT special, and dangerous in very positive way. You are right, that some people didn’t even hear ATS, and they are first to criticize it. A lot of fans were specifically geared to this album, but now most of them think like I do. Thank you all for your hard work and wonderful music.
By the way – take good care for Chester on tour, cause we don’t want him to broke something at stage again 😉

  187. 22blackjack on September 28, 2010 at 1:11 am

Yep, I was one of those Linkin Park fans that just didn’t know how to feel about it at first. On first listen of A Thousand Suns, I really missed the heavy guitars and I wasn’t really sure what to think about it. That being said, I really gave the album and chance, and you know what, I’ve had the album in my car for two weeks and I haven’t grown tired of it yet. The album as a whole, really works and the tracks have really grown on me. Wretches and Kings and Robot Boy are still my favourites, but the more I heard the others, the more I liked it. See you guys in Sydney!

  188. 26pj on September 28, 2010 at 1:01 am

U guys are simply amazing. Great work. Keep up the good job.
I also loved the fact that u lambasted those who wanted repetion of Hybrid Theory & constantly talking nonsense.
Plz take no offence. Thanks. LP 4ever.

  189. stasteff on September 28, 2010 at 12:54 am

First I want to tell you that I think it’s really great what you do for your fans.
Second: When I heard the album the first time, I was shocked. (The truth may be said) but not in a negative sense.
I have always heard your albums properly, which means I want to understand the lyrics! Since English is not my native language, I have your lyrics and translate it for me.
This is also the only negative thing I’ve noticed on this album. I get a real headache trying to decipher the lyrics. (Internet also helps here).
Come to the point Steff: I think you really have done a great job. And who deals with your lyrics will find the old Linkin Park in it. (Behind the beard)

  190. Xenith on September 28, 2010 at 12:49 am

I first heard a 10 second clip of One Step Closer on a TV and without hesitation or any research, I bought the album on a whim. At the time I was a Britney fan!

I became so engrossed in my new found sound that I researched previous work and bands alike. So when ATS was announced I was excited… However ATS is still growing on me. I am still giving it time and sadly I am struggling to relate and love the album as a whole.

The fans are trying they really are. At best they may appreciate the effort that has gone into ATS but you cant tell a fan why they should enjoy it. Every song has a significance and everyone listens for their own personal reasons… I’m still finding mine.

  191. r3animas3an on September 28, 2010 at 12:39 am

    hey mike,

been a fan since the start and cant stop listening to ATS- epic stuff. I agree with your comments. I think a lot of ppl are just freaking out because it takes so long between albums that if they dont particularly like the new sound theres effectively a 6-8 yr gap from MTM to your next album.

Anyway- wanna have a beer with me and my mates when you come to perth?

  192. tse333 on September 28, 2010 at 12:32 am

I dunno about anyone else mike, but in my room A Thousand Suns Shares a Shelf with Hybrid Theory.

Can i also say that i am probably one of the 5% people on earth who listen to bands like slipknot and bands like coldplay and jimmy eat world, Clearly there not the same genre but i like music for the music. Mike A thousand suns has something that hybrid theory could never have, you know what it is i know what it is. But Clearly Some people “Janxrod” cant see it.

Michael kenji, ur a truly wonderful person! I totally agree with the things u said about ur haters. Sure they might hate ur album, but that doesnt mean they dont have a vali reason. so y insult the haters without keeping tht in mindI have some doubts myself (although they are very few and quite precise) We wouldnt be any better if we did that. The sound is new and revolutionary, but that doesnt mean everyone has to love it. U cant love evrything. I love LP but i cant stand heavy metal an children of bodom/job 4 a cowboy screamo lol
mike,u impress me so much, not only as an artist but also as a person. If i had been in ur place i would’ve died by sunrise!xD

  197. itsumademorokku on September 27, 2010 at 11:43 pm

    ^^ ohayoo kenji-kun
you said that a collection of “hit singles” is a better reason to sell a album but thats not true -.- i ever brought an album from a band if i like the first song they bring out. i do that because i like to know a lot more about that band and not because i love all songs on it its enought even if i like just one song 😉 and in “LP’s” case i ever love the songs who are not suppost to be a hit-single (its the same with “strange things” i miss that one on the rising tide) well im a fan since 2000 i will support LP no matter what!
but i still think about to stick a Fort Minor sticker on A Thousand suns ^^° sry
    read ya

  198. iajacky2yanto on September 27, 2010 at 11:39 pm

Mike, this is an excellent piece. I listened to LP since Meteora, and yeah, I’ve been liking LP’s music because I think they are unique, different from other bands. This include ATS as well. Honest I was quite uncertain about it, but since listening to it, now I’ve been like listening to it the whole time 😀

Linkin Park for the win. Please continue making good music.

  199. smoshee on September 27, 2010 at 11:31 pm

grr.. well said man!! seriously… I Read a lot of remarks and I was disappointed 😦 It felt as though they didnt listen to the ALBUM.. or try to figure out the meanings behind the songs…
Speaking of which.. I would like the meanings behind your songs.. as in what were u thinking of when u wrote it… I mean the thing abut art is it is left for the masses to interpret / decipher the meanings. Your songs work at different levels in different situations… so what were u thinking??
I want your Review of your Album….

  200. bkeppy on September 27, 2010 at 11:24 pm

    Thoughtfully said Mike.

I know how that stuff can eat at you guys but just use it as fuel. My hope is that some of the ignorant people out there will think before they start posting negatively about stuff they really don’t know much about. Music is a medium just like any other art or writing and is liked or disliked by many or few.

Personally I really enjoyed the full album as a whole. Sure I thought the Video for The Catalyst was awesome but I’m a vision oriented kinda guy and I loved the effects, as well as the music and color scheme blend. Keep it up and I’ll be there whenever you guys tour near me in the state of Misery!

  201. quadchrome on September 27, 2010 at 11:16 pm

I think the reason why sales have dropped for albums is not solely because of the economic situation and the fact that internet makes music pirating easy, it’s that people began to realize why buy an album of let’s say, twelve to fourteen songs when they end up only liking (or loving) two or three of those? It makes much more sense to go on iTunes and download the single song(s). Yes, people seem to confuse selling out with their own faulty definition. If we want to talk selling out for the sake of making money, there are a few highly popular musicians that would fit the bill a lot better than Linkin Park. Of course, any band signed to a major label has money in mind in the long run.

  202. fatimalp on September 27, 2010 at 11:12 pm

This is a great post. Thank you Mike!
I totally agree with you and I’m proud of you guys to took the risk, changed something, and I think ATS is amazing album, it sound different but it’s great! I really love it, and I also a fan since Hybrid Theory.
If someone don’t like it, it’s their loss not yours 😉 you did a great job as always and we’re proud of you!

  203. maraina15 on September 27, 2010 at 11:06 pm

I loved the new album and I’ve been listening to it since it came out. I think that it all is a whole and you can’t separate the “covers”, they’re just a transition to the other songs. You guys did an amazing job.

Well said Mike, thank you for this post!

  204. peteryb on September 27, 2010 at 10:51 pm

I really enjoy the thoughtfulness of your post Mike, along with the band’s music. Never before have I been so satisfied with an album produced by Linkin Park and I believe that is purely because you worked as a team to create fine art. Admittedly, I have grown with the band… relating to your albums every step of the way but I feel this album truly cultivates my lust for intellect, self awareness, world relations and human rights consciousness.

    Thank you.

  205. antigonilp on September 27, 2010 at 10:46 pm

the truth is that I couldn’t agree more with u Mike. This is not my fav from the whole LP discography, but I know what was the intention of creating ATS, a rebirth. I’m proud you took the risk. As you said to judge something you must have heard it before, that’s a fact. Ignore the negative comments from haters and keep up the good work.

  206. devilbearbec on September 27, 2010 at 10:43 pm

This was a nicely written and well thought out reaction to the album haters, however you shouldn’t have to justify anything!
You are the artist and have the create right to do what you feel comfortable doing.

I’m an old LP fan and have loved everything you guys have done…up until this point, but thats not to say ATS isn’t good it’s not just my chosen genre of music. I wrote a preview-review http://www.devilbearrock.com/2010/09/13/linkin-park-a-thousand-suns-out-now/ and plan to listen to the album a few more times before I attempt an actual review – I owe you guys too much to jump on the LP bashing!

  207. kamila90 on September 27, 2010 at 10:42 pm

When you released your first album, you broke the boundaries that society so diligently puts you. And with each new album, you get out of the cage where you are locked up.
Most people like consistency, and when something violates the monotonous rhythm of their life, it scares them. Often, we do limit ourselves and set ourselves the obstacles everywhere: at work, in personal life, career and music. Listeners and musicians are choosing only one direction, one style of playing set themselves the border once and for all.
But you – with every new album, each time be selected from a template that you impose on the people around.

  208. aberu on September 27, 2010 at 10:41 pm

Mike and Linkin Park, in the last 10 years have progressed in their music and have given us a good material that is sure to be proud of their fans, for more critical that they receive good or bad, always give the best of you and do not hesitate we’ll always be supporting them in their future projects and causes.

  209. eefiera on September 27, 2010 at 10:30 pm

It’s great that you finally addressed the matter and let the “haters” get a better picture of what the album is suppose to be and what were the band’s intention when creating the albums. I guess with every fanbase there are two groups of fans, fans that can adapt with the band evolving and fans that cannot.

I truly admire the band’s work for A Thousand Suns. It’s pure artistic genius and I’ve not heard an album quite like this. Props to Linkin Park!

  210. linkinlayra on September 27, 2010 at 10:26 pm

thx mike… dont worry abt hatersz we are here with you and LP forever .LOVE THE SOUND ATS rocks

  212. mellowdrips on September 27, 2010 at 10:13 pm

I like the new album… I wouldn’t say that it’s the best album ever but it’s a good album… It’s really like an ‘opus’ record, where it’s like one big song and each individual song is just a part of the bigger song… something like that… it also reminds me a little of Chris Cornell’s latest album ‘Scream’ which went from one track to the next with no stopping in between… I don’t think there are that many ‘singles’ on the album but that doesn’t mean it’s bad… Some have said that ‘Blackout’ is the most Linkin-Park-sounding song on the album… but I guess that’s just due to the fact that it’s one of the only songs with Chester screaming on it…

  213. thepixelpod on September 27, 2010 at 10:06 pm

i dont have a problem with the album,
    i like ATS,
but.. i didn’t like Covers songs like
    The Requiem,
    The Radiance,
    Empty Spaces.

so there is only 9 songs in the album :/

    Great Post Mike

To be honest, the first time I heard The Catalyst, I wasn’t in the group of people that go insane from a small or big change and go ballistic. I was in the group that went “huh” in a good way. In seconds I played it in my car with the volume to earsplitting level, singing to the lyrics. Yes, you heard me, singing. I listened to the whole album on MySpace and I was spellbound until it release on my first day of school. I still play it through to this day.

And I agree. The haters are cynics. You guys make music that touches people. I stand by to the album’s message.
    Keep rocking LP.

  215. cutewhitebunny on September 27, 2010 at 9:37 pm

Personally, I really like the new album. I actually bought it before I’d heard most of the songs, but I don’t regret it. If it was like most of the other music out there – the Top 40 type stuff – I probably wouldn’t have liked it. Linkin Park is the closest to generic pop music that I actually listen to.

A Thousand Suns is Linkin Park. It may not be exactly the same Linkin Park as on Hybrid Theory, but it’s close enough to be recognisable and different enough to be new and exciting.

  216. trueblue268 on September 27, 2010 at 9:31 pm

Very well said Mike. I for one love every one of your albums. Everyone has the right to their opinion, but I don’t understand why some fans do not think it possible to love Hybrid Theory and A Thousand Suns. I think you have really outdone yourselves on this album and I personally can not wait to see what the future holds for Linkin Park music. You are extremely right to be so proud of what you guys have done on ATS and may there be many more exciting and new experiences to come, and yes the album is even better when listened to from start to finish.

  217. tenz0da on September 27, 2010 at 9:31 pm

I agree with you Mike. Someone shouldn’t just base their opinoin on a small snippet of a track. Its just not fair. Anyways Mike I really Loved the album and I myself personally love ATS! It has a very nice sound and songs to it. Thanks again for another great album LP! All the LP fans out there appreciate your hard work! Linkin Park Forever!

  218. wjudson on September 27, 2010 at 9:24 pm

Thanks for recognizing both the praise and hate on the album. I personally love the album but agree it may not be for everyone. I never understood why people don’t give different music a chance but I can see a lot of people being quick to judge music making their opinion invalid in my opinion. Too many people are closed minded when it comes to music. I’m glad that you recognize that some of the negative comments come from people who don’t listen to the type of music thats on the album. I mean why would I listen to someone’s opinion about music when they have already made up their mind before hearing it? I look forward to seeing you guys on tour and listening to your new music live.

  219. Andrew Leezan on September 27, 2010 at 9:22 pm

Although I’m no longer a LinkinPark.com member anymore, cuz they just threw me out, I personally liked the whole album and rated it 5 out of 5 hearts
    Thank You!

  220. argol8489 on September 27, 2010 at 9:19 pm

Most of the time you speak with sincerity and always try to make a feedback to people … agradesco much that for you is so important to clarify these things, many of us know how important it is to create music, not repeat , create (create = new) … grow always hurts … change is always scary … but for me it would be very boring to hear the same thing, you have not changed (mmm. .. well .. you are always changing, with a beard, no beard, earrings, short hair, long hair, blue, red, yellow, etc) you grew impressively. good luck mike …:)

  221. ♥ZB♥PL♥ on September 27, 2010 at 9:10 pm

I myself think this album is one of the greatest of your great albums. I’ve been your fan since what? 2005, and I have all of your albums, vids, live shows and even I saved all of the vids about “making of” in my HDD, because of what? I loved LP, I love LP and I will always love LP, just as simple as that. You guys did a great job, this album is a total different thing among these album from the past, the trend of music has changed, and it changes very fast, to adopt with it, artists and bands need to start changing otherwise they will stuck in the middle don’t know whether to change or to keep up. LP is different in a good way. They changed and gain more fans than lost

  222. fenix2exe on September 27, 2010 at 8:53 pm

thank you for your toughs mike… and i can’t agree more with you about the “sild out” i wrote the same on one of my reviews about the cd, if you would want more money you would make Hybrid Theory 2… and it’s sad hiw people don’t really listen and the make their opinion. anyways thank and take care guys… And to all the staff, Warner bros., crew, and band crew, and everybody involved with the creation, concept, and distribution aswell of A Thousand Suns thank for it, it awesome and a heck of a journey!!!

  223. stiingrays on September 27, 2010 at 8:42 pm

Cant wait to see you guys on tour.
You guys are fresh, and original, which keeps people like me listening to your music. A majority of what i listen to is metal, heavy stuff in general. You guys were the first band i was a fan of. almost 10 years ago. Still here.
Keep doing what you guys do best, we love it.
    Sincerely, a true fan, valentino.

  224. glitteryone on September 27, 2010 at 8:36 pm

I cannot express the Love I have for this new Album!! I loved you guys in Junior High and You deffinitely got me through High School. I feel as though this album is having the more positive grown up perspective of life. Letting go of hurt and pain and just moving on with your life. You guys always do an amazing job with the Beats and Lyrics. Amazing Album!! Keep up the great work you guys do

  225. vnegrete on September 27, 2010 at 8:32 pm

I think you guys already made your point. This should be your last response to the album and the critics. Those who like it, good, awesome and those who don’t well let them be close minded about it. I love this album because, unlike the rest of the other albums, the structure is very different and unexpected. For example, “what I’ve done” sounds so structured that I already expected what was next. A Thousand Suns is very unexpected, which is perfect because who doesn’t like surprises. I like that you guys let the creativity flow and just use different sounds. This is real music. Its creativity. I like the change, and hopefully you guys keep evolving because I know I will accept it.

  226. penneysound on September 27, 2010 at 8:31 pm

that’s exactly what i said about the whole “sold out, gone mainstream” buisness. the first album was mainstream. it would be selling out to continue pandering to some demographic box on a marketting exec’s chart.

but as far as i’m concerned, the linkin park sound has not changed. it’s just that it used to be locked in a little box, had these clearly defined edges and boundaries. but the stated goal of linkin park was “to blur the edges so they blend together properly”. that’s what’s happening now. sometimes even too much, sometimes the sound seems to be reaching for something, something that doesn’t quite fit.

  227. ktacaceres on September 27, 2010 at 8:29 pm

wow! you’re right! the key phrase here is “we’re human too”.
i’ve been a fan of LP since i was 12 years old (Hybrid Theory era). I have beautiful moments thanks to the band. You’re music has been with me since that moment. Hybrid Theory,Reanimation and Meteora represented my hardest part of my life (my adolescence). after that, Minutes To Midnight was with me in a period in which i decided what i wanna do with my life and now, A Thousand Suns comes in a period of my life in which i need those songs…I only wanna say Thank you guys for being part of my life and See you on tour…in my dear country Chile…Catalina Caceres

  228. supriyahearts on September 27, 2010 at 8:28 pm

this is why i love you and the rest of you boys, sorry i mean men cause that is what it takes to write a blog like this.
i just listened to the album for the fourth (or fifth?) time and i have got to say it took me that many listens to see what kind of masterpiece you put out. there are so many layers to this album, that it makes it that much better than hybrid theory and meteora. the lyrics are more powerful on both of those albums, but the theme and maturity is there on a thousand suns. im here for you guys, from when i saw crawling on MTV to now and forever.

  229. ellzworth on September 27, 2010 at 8:26 pm

I’m really not sure why you owe anyone an explanation but that’s just the person you are which is why you have so many fans. Personally ATS is a breath of fresh air. I’m going onto 30 years and I feel that I’ve grown and matured alongside LP. Thank you very much for that. Best album today, tomorrow and until the next one.

  230. sakuryan on September 27, 2010 at 8:26 pm

Hi Mike! I’ve been a fan since “Crawling”, since I was in Junior-high, and I have to say you guys were the first heavy-metal band that I love (being a fan of boy-bands my whole life before and even now) but it turns out that I’m still in love with your music even now in ATS. I guess I love any great music whatever genre they are. Erm. what am I trying to say? LOL the point is, I know that no matter what genre you guys are creating music, you always strive to create awesome stuff and you will always have my support, bro!!

Greatest thing I have ever read in my life, Mike.

I posted an awesome, positive, truthful review on “A Thousand Suns” on Itunes. I think you should check it out. The user-name is Lord MSG (Michael Gonzalez) and I posted under the Deluxe version. Hopefully Itunes will approve it.

I am going to print this out and If I ever get to meet you I want you to sign it because that will be the greatest accomplishment of my life.

You, sir, are the best role model for a guy to look up to.

God Bless You and Linkin Park.

  232. cezar_lp on September 27, 2010 at 8:23 pm

Like I say: There are fans of LP (people that listen different styles of music) and fans of Hybrid, Meteora, etc….
Mike and LP, please, never stop to do the music that you love, because this is the music that your fans love!

  233. cwaggg43 on September 27, 2010 at 8:17 pm

Love the new album!!! I’ve been a fan of Linkin Park since hybrid theory and have enjoyed every album since. This album is my favorite i really like the the flow of all the songs and the different sound. Keep up the good work!

  234. xmariedetx on September 27, 2010 at 8:16 pm

First off, ive been a linkin park fan for over 10 years. Ive seen over 500 bands live and they are one of the top best bands ive seen on stage..honestly.

When I first heard “the catalyst” I wasnt sure how to feel about. I wasnt going to base one song and say “this album is going to suck” Im into hardcore music, bands like have heart and ceremony. So would I say “if this doesnt sound like what I listen to, then I hate it” No, im not closed minded, “A Thousand Suns” is a WORK OF ART from track 1 to 15. Linkin Park is a band who wants to be different and they never disappoint me, this is why ive been a fan for so long. Keep making music, ill be listening and supporting linkin park

  235. a1000sunsgurl on September 27, 2010 at 8:13 pm

Thank you Mike OH so much for addressing this. I am constantly reading comments from your haters about how you have “changed” and some even say “RIP Linkin Park” all on the bases of what??! That your music isn’t metal anymore?! I swear it angers me more than you know. I’ve been following your music for a long time now and I have enjoyed ALL your songs no matter if it has a pop/rock kind of sound, techno and metal. I love u guys for who are and how you express how you feel into your music, not meaningless BS like a lot of artists now do. So, the sound or beat to the song, thats secondary for me to like or dislike. Anyway, Hope 2 see you guys on tour. God Bless. (P. S LOVE the new hair 😉

  236. milasouza11 on September 27, 2010 at 8:06 pm

    Dear Mike!

I’ve followed Linkin Park since 2004. When I was 13. I fell in love with this band since i heard Faint for the 1st time.
And I LOVE all the albums ever released by LP!
Each album released reflects a unique moment in the band and that somehow, it had helped me a lot in my life.
And I think it’s important also the fact of renewal.
Always seeking new things, new beats, rhythms, to not fall into the same!
What happens is that a lot of people are afraid of change and therefore critical for no reason.
That goes for any time of life! If something is different of
the “conventional” or “normal”, the people already begin to judge before knowing.

  237. tylerelmergreen on September 27, 2010 at 8:00 pm

ive been a fan since 01, and ive talked with a lot of linkin park fans about ATS. its not the old “sound” we all miss. its not the nu metal look and feel, we all agree that the songs on HT and Meteora were all-around better songs. Back then, you guys came off like you were “hungrier” and had a bigger cause. a friend told me ATS sounds like you just put out a new album to put out a new album. its good, i’ll still bump it in my car, but to a lot of us, its a 6, 7, or 8 out of a 10 album. i think most LP fans would say HT and Meteora were 10/10 albums.

  238. slowlearner32 on September 27, 2010 at 7:58 pm

Hope old LP fans realize your greatness someday!

  239. shinsetsunakoi on September 27, 2010 at 7:56 pm

I have to admit, I’ve been a fan since I first heard crawling on MTV, Hybrid Theory and Meteora helped me through some of my toughest and darkest stuff. When I first ATS was coming out I flipped. Yeah, when I first listened to the whole album all the way through I thought it was different. But different isn’t bad. Music and art changes as the artist(s) changes, and I think that the new stuff is awesome and that some people are just too close minded.

  240. angelsrc79 on September 27, 2010 at 7:56 pm

I gotta say, Mike. It’s you writing things like this that make me not just glad I’m a fan of your music, but proud to be a fan of you and the rest of the band. You don’t just say you guys are down to earth, you prove it time and time again. So thanks. 🙂

  241. mirianyoshiyke on September 27, 2010 at 7:53 pm

Mike, I love you. I really do …thank you so much for clearing all the things up. Everything you said here is definitely the truth. Thank you for everything and btw A Thousand Suns is the most perfect album ever, just EPIC! God bless you forever! much love ❤

  244. EpicLinkinPark on September 27, 2010 at 7:46 pm

This was nicely well put Mike, I agree with you 100%
Alot of people think it’s like cookie cutters and it’s finished, it’s not. There’s a whole process of making an album. What people need to realise is that there’s journey of sounds and music which makes the road full of discoveries to follow. Take chances and explore the new direction that path leads. If we stay on the same path forever, we won’t explore anything new. All I am saying here is, give things a chance. Mike basically said it all on how I feel too. Anyways, that’s my input. Hope all is well Mike, Can’t wait to see you guys on tour in US. Take care. :]

  245. shinoda194 on September 27, 2010 at 7:45 pm

I thoroughly enjoyed this post. I classify myself as a fan that loves Hybrid Theory, Reanimation, Meteora, Collision Course, Minutes to Midnight, and (your greatest work yet) A Thousand Suns. I love the new direction and I love the old sound. But I agree with what you’ve said (or another band member?) in the past. You’ve sold 10’s of millions of albums of the “Nu Metal rap fusion” or whatever you want to call it. It’s nothing but pure logic to move on. Honestly, you guys would lose interest if you just made the same album over and over again. I cannot wait to see what you guys do for future releases, and I’m stoked to see you guys live.

    Thanks for your time

  246. insplendoribus on September 27, 2010 at 7:44 pm

I’m very prouf of you guys, I’ve been your fan since 2001 (your songs started to sound here in México in 2001) and I can say ATS is your best album, the most mature, the best produced. You should’ve have quoted Pius XII instead of Martin Luther King.

C’mon guys, you’re going to Argentina, Chile and Brazil…What about México?

  247. cardboardgun on September 27, 2010 at 7:44 pm

Look at this, I have so much respect for you Mike. You use intelligence and common sense (such rare things in the 21st century) to explain misconceptions and you do it so calmly. If it was one of them replying, they’d be firing back with all this anger because they couldn’t handle the logic of your replies or respond in a comprehensible way.

I pre-ordered the cd+dvd pack and absolutely no regrets. I loved the documentary and how honest you guys were with each other, but also all the insanity that went into the making of the record. As for the music, I’ve listened to the album…50+ times (no end in sight), I connect so well and I love the music!!! You guys are true artists.

  248. ceanwoo on September 27, 2010 at 7:43 pm

I feel really happy to see different sides of Linkin Park. Seems like you guys are building up mirrors to see clearer of yourselves. Since musics are mirrors, of course people would saw different reflections.
No matter what, things that you did on this album, they completed you!
I love ATS, ‘cuz personally, i highly appreciate artists who keep changing! That is the soul of creativity!!!! The soul of Art and Music!!!
    No doubt!!

  249. jelly211 on September 27, 2010 at 7:42 pm

You also forgot to mention A Thousand Suns is the greatest thing ever created in the history of music since the electric guitar. And noise in general.

  250. andymc2411 on September 27, 2010 at 7:39 pm

everything you wrote is true, but to know if something t like or do not have to listen to morethan a few fans see and they did not with ATS thanks for always be with the fans and try to do something new we know LP are the 6 guys in the studio
    LP4 ever

    Thanks for music art

  251. lucidofelice on September 27, 2010 at 7:38 pm

I was watching an old video of you guys back when you were still known as Hybrid Theory, and Brad was saying that you guys never wanted to make music that can be broken down into categorized parts. You wanted your music to be associated with the name of your band, and I think that with A Thousand Suns, you’ve succeeded in doing just that. I mean, nearly every song you’ve made on this album can’t be easily covered – something that wasn’t always true on the former albums. And the fact that you still pursue great artistic heights and have it sound this good is inspirational. Thank you guys for making your music the way you wanted to, and we’ll see you on the road!

  252. mantis18 on September 27, 2010 at 7:37 pm

I thought the catalyst was gonna be the only song like that on the album. So I bought ATS expecting Linkin Park only to get pure Alternative. I’m will admit the bands music is still great even if some people don’t like it, It’s complete preference. The problem is Fan bases, one little change and everyone goes crazy. There are artists like Lady Gaga where her fans could care less about her albums and just buy or steal her singles, but there are also artists like Avenged Sevenfold where their fans feel like family and went out to buy multiple CDs bringing Nightmare to over 1 million sales. I feel Linkin Parks fans are in the middle some die hards and some who don’t even care.

Mike, I Love Hybrid Theory, I Love Meteora, I Love Minutes To Midnight and I Love A Thousand Suns in different kinds, but still love.

I hear the essence of LP from By My Self to Robot Boy.
If you don’t get into the album, if you don’t listen without any prejudice, you can never say it’s a masterpiece. I listen the album without any noise, prejudice, etc and I’m proud to say A Thousand Suns is a masterpiece.

Thanks for giving us the opportunity to expand our musical world, our minds.

    Never stop making music!

HAHA, I bought the CD/DVD pre-sale and came. *-* I live in Brazil and I was so happy when he arrived. Only sorry to have to pay a fee for the Brazilian Internal Revenue Service of $ 83. More by Linkin Park, is very worthwhile. ♥

  257. whosmurry on September 27, 2010 at 7:22 pm

I took the liberty of writing up a review on my blog, if you’re interested, Mike. Here’s a relevant excerpt.

“A Thousand Suns represents the best of Linkin Park’s past and a glimpse of their future. It’s a great band getting back to what they do best. When they’re making music that excites them and scares people who are concerned about their commercial clout, that’s usually when they do their best work.”

  258. melville183 on September 27, 2010 at 7:17 pm

I Personally think the new direction taken on this album is really interesting, I bought my CD/DVD copy of the album and I’m happy I did.
It’s a very well written album, the use of the interesting sounds and the whole feel of the album is brilliant, And being a fan since way back on hybrid theory I still hear Linkin Park in it everywhere. Also being a sound engineer, i can appreciate how brilliant the production on the album is once again.

People who “hate” on the album because it’s not what you used to be is cynical I think, it’s obvious to me you guys made the album you wanted to make and I personally really enjoy the CD. I’m all for a thousand suns.

I Was Expecting Your Reaction, And I’m Very Proud You Have Cleared My Mind!

I always have & always will stand behind Linkin Park. you guys are truly artistic geniuses, and I feel that the people who bashed this album are simply close-minded & want something generic; they aren’t open to this new adventure that is A Thousand Suns. Though you probably don’t remember me, meeting You & Chester was one of the greatest experiences of my life, one that i’ll treasure forever. Thank you for an amazing 10 years of music, you guys deserve so much more credit & respect than you get. I hope you continue to make music, nay, “musical art” for as long as possible.

    -Austin Wallick

  261. kathyxx on September 27, 2010 at 7:13 pm

Thank you for sticking up for real artistic integrity instead of pandering to the masses for easy cash. This, the album’s unexpectedness and newness, what exactly what I needed to hear from you guys, and has restored by enthusiasm even after following you guys for nearly a decade. In a way, ATS is the “old sound,” because Hybrid Theory at the time was something new and unique, just like how this record is now. (not to say that the other albums weren’t bad. Meteora is my favorite because you took a sound you made an completely mastered it).

I feel like I’ve had to explain this to people a thousand times. It’s nice to see that I’m on the same page you are.

  262. Alexandra Nofi on September 27, 2010 at 7:11 pm

Thank you for referring to your music as art. Because that’s what it is, and always has been.

What gets to me, personally, is when someone goes to a fellow artist and says, “you can only do this kind of art” or words to that effect. That’s like asking the grass to be blue, and the sky to be green. It would disrupt the natural order of things inside your head. If you confine art within a box, it’s no longer art.

Why are people still so close-minded, in 2010? It baffles me. What baffles me even more, is how the speech in “Wisdom, Justice and Love” is just as true today was it was when it was first spoken. Nothing has changed.
