Shinoda Sketchbook, 1989

March 9, 2011

Just found this in a box in one of my closets today. This is the cover of my sketchbook, from 1987-89 (ish). Some of this is not my writing–I don’t know whose it is. But I think the funniest part is that there are logos of Bon Jovi, Cinderella, and Ratt, all crossed out. And Oaktown’s 357 made it into the mix somehow. Lucky there was no internet at the time, or my Mom would have Googled The 2 Live Crew and consequently thrown out my entire cassette collection.

Mike, why don’t you draw some sketches like that and make it as a notebook’s front page cover? That must be cool tho ๐Ÿ˜€

  8. thecatalyst1994 on March 14, 2011 at 12:37 pm

On my notebook there was only quote:”Sometimes the opened doors are more difficult to get through than closed ones”, and earlier there were LP, Soulfly(damn this !@#$), Dead By Sunrise etc. It was bad to erase it all because of “LP”…But I wrote it on the another side))) Meanwhile, 10x for your sharing))

  9. thegluelpfan on March 13, 2011 at 11:37 am

Well on my notebooks there were Linkin Park,Evanescence,Britney Spears (when I was VERY young please don’t judge ๐Ÿ˜€ ),Apocalyptica,System Of A Down and so on.There was a time when I used to listen to some rap and since the lyrics were so dirty I had to lock myself in my room to listen to those cassettes ๐Ÿ˜€ Thank god my mom never found out.

    HEY! Where’s MC Hammer??? ๐Ÿ˜›
I was 7ish to 9ish when u and your friends made this so i know some of the people here. Specially Run DMC. I loved ’em! Do u remember or did you see their performance with Aerosmith a long time ago where they sang “Walk this way”? U made me search it on youtube ๐Ÿ˜› Hardly remembered the video but i cant forget how much I enjoyed & loved the music! Thinking of that rock/hiphop collaboration makes me think thats where my love for it started. You should thank Run DMC & Aerosmith!

that’s pretty awesome mike… just cute to remember the 12 years old boy could drown that sketch ๐Ÿ™‚ just good

When I saw this I thought… you could like it, too.

    It’s a new amazing kind of art…

  23. Claudia B. on March 10, 2011 at 9:56 am

My sketchbooks look kinda the same from when I was 10 – 12 years old, except that the bands are different (you know, Linkin Park, Muse, 30 Seconds To Mars, Metallica, Limp Bizkit, Beatie Boys, Aerosmith (!) (even Eminem is there) are there, next to Run D.M.C., Cypress Hill, Depeche Mode, even Bon Jovi, but it’s not crossed out, and many more) Even though, I wasn’t even thought of back in the late 80’s (I was born in early – mid 90’s) I really enjoy the good old classics. Run D.M.C., LL Cool J, Public Enemy FTW.

By the way, my parents don’t exactly like my taste in music either. Yeah, they don’t like Linkin Park. Especially my father doesn’t. My mom is pretty tolerant, though ๐Ÿ™‚

  24. rockrjen on March 10, 2011 at 9:53 am

This is so great!! Had many school notebooks that looked like this! Thanks for sharing…….find more stuff!!

  25. jowa96 on March 10, 2011 at 9:12 am

I like it! My notebooks looks like this one. Often serve the books and sign on them;)) The best part is that teachers are still the same vortex of a story that supposedly make up for shortages from a colleague or friend;))

  26. cincybmxlpfreak on March 10, 2011 at 8:19 am

Awww!! That’s so cute! So what? This is probably a sketchbook from when you were around 10-12 years-old? My old textbooks pretty much look the same way with random band names and whatnot on the cover. However…I wasn’t alive in the 80s, so…no 2 Live Crew on the cover. Hahaha!

  27. Shinoda's Army on March 10, 2011 at 7:10 am

“Run DMC” “Easy E” “NWA” “DOC” Really really a good taste, young Shinoda. I wish someone could go back with music and bring some good rap around. Music sucks a lot lately, in general. It’s like we already touched every possible type, there’s nothing new to hear. We need someone who invents a new genre. Are you able to, ‘old’ Shinoda?

  28. lorenalp on March 10, 2011 at 7:07 am

    LOL ๐Ÿ˜›

  29. abbykulyde on March 10, 2011 at 6:45 am

I’m 4 years old by that time! …and that background, is that “MICHAEL’S DRAWINGS #2”? what’s with # 2 mike? haha!

  30. evooba on March 10, 2011 at 6:16 am

No way! Wow!!! I was born in ’93 but I definitely do know N.W.A and Run DMC! Their music is sweet. As for Bon Jovi I’m not really a fan so yay for crossing it LOL … One thing is for sure; your mom didnt appreciate good music ๐Ÿ˜›

  31. milasouza11 on March 10, 2011 at 2:16 am

the best part of this is: now you’ve time and you found these things to share with us. Pretty awesome. Thanks Mike!
    I love you!

    @milasouza11 (Camila) from Brazil

  32. dorito82 on March 10, 2011 at 2:11 am

Your mom just didn’t know what good music was! But, yeah, they were RAUNCHY!!! LOL (Hoochie Mama, anyone!?) Mind you, I was six or seven, so I wasn’t listening to that stuff yet… ha What does she think of LP (other than her son is in the band)? Bon Jovi still puts on one of the best live acts ever, so don’t be afraid to admit you like them, though, I could see how it wasn’t cool to like them in your crew at the time…

  33. highlandpark1999 on March 10, 2011 at 2:09 am

Haw! Does were the days! Either you were listening to Gangsta Rap or Metal. Glam bands like Cinderella, Bon Jovi or Ratt, where the equivalent to today’s Pop music!
I remember Jay Thomas, who was the Deejay for Power 106 in L.A.! White guy playing hip hop music!

  34. kim7huang on March 10, 2011 at 1:57 am

Haha,it is interesting and reminds me of my sketchbooks in my primary school days.Drawing in the sun after lunch with my friend.I always treasure those days.
Now the damn high school pressure takes my drawing time away .
    Anyway ,have a nice day.

  35. widya rahayu on March 10, 2011 at 1:26 am

  45. ashtino on March 9, 2011 at 6:01 pm

I do this sort of thing all the time in sketch books. It shows up on the margins of my school papers sometimes, too x). Thanks for sharing this, it looks awesome :).

  46. soufex on March 9, 2011 at 5:23 pm

that’s pretty hilarious. also, 2live crew? classy!

i have nearly every sketchbook i’ve ever had since the age of 11 in a bunch of boxes under my mom’s bed (no other storage in the house, ech). i’m slightly terrified she’s gonna get bored one day and have a look through. apart from the fact i was pretty awful for most of my teenage years there’s probably a lot of embarrassing creepy junk… couldn’t afford to ship them all to australia, though.

you should show us some oooold art sometime! (:

(also hi. apparently i didn’t have a wordpress account before today, who knew?)

  47. whosmurry on March 9, 2011 at 5:22 pm

That’s adorable. And it makes me feel less embarrassed about my high school notebooks with LP logos doodled all over them.

  48. Alexandra Nofi on March 9, 2011 at 4:29 pm

I was born in ’86. You have a sketchbook that is about as old as me.

This keeps making me think of the lyrics to “Strange Things”. I know you aren’t willing to share any sketches from this book. I don’t have any sketchbooks from when I was that young, but even if I did, I would only show them to people who I felt like could understand them. Showing someone your art is kind of like ripping your heart out of your chest and handing it to that person. It’s a part of us most people aren’t supposed to see.

BTW, I still own a bunch of cassette tapes, but, have nothing to play them with, and I am unwilling to get rid of them.

    Feels nostalgic, huh? ๐Ÿ˜‰
I sometimes go back to my old stuff just to laugh at the products of my overheated imagination at that time.
So don’t ever throw those things away! They need to remind how hilarious you’ve been ;P

  56. sajinokami on March 9, 2011 at 2:13 pm

ah yes, The 2 Live Crew. One day my friend, a couple of years younger than me, handed her copy of As Nasty As They Want To Be over to me: ‘Here, take this. I don’t want my parents to find it and throw it away.’ And I still have it. XD

  57. adiek84 on March 9, 2011 at 2:11 pm

I love that! Your music taste has always been wicked! I have that too, but as a non-artists, I used my English textbook! My doodling mostly consisted of the Wu-Tang Clan logo and tons of song lyrics mostly by Destiny’s Child (Say my name, say my name :-D) and other Hip Hop/R’n’B artists (my discovery of rock music came later). The funny thing is, that as the youngest of three kids, I mostly got the used textbooks of my brother and sister. So often there were pages with my brother’s drawings of horror characters, the names of my sister’s love interests and my lyrics on one page. Sometimes it was really hard to read the English texts…actually it’s a wonder I’ve learned English at all!

You were born to art (including the amazing music you make). This, in my opinion, simple, basic, random and funny art you did with your friends and looks like you shared likes, great and unforgettable moments with them. I’d love to see more stuff like that. ๐Ÿ˜€

  64. Zara on March 9, 2011 at 1:57 pm

What’s with the Bon Jovi hate? With my lack of artistic ability, I used to cut logos and pictures from magazines and stick them onto my notebooks and folders, good times.

Would love to see a sketch!
