My Old Headphones

April 22, 2011

I realized this evening that my favorite studio headphones are looking pretty bad. Wait…how long have I had these? I’ve used them since…before our first album…actually, since our first demos. Weird. These headphones are like 15 years old, and although the foam around the ears is crumbling, they still sound amazing.

I’m treating myself to new headphones this week. And yes, I’ll be buying the exact same pair.

Hello, A very insightful post. Thanks for the info. Its great that if our default settings are giving us messy or stringy builds, this dialog can probably help. Thanks for the information.

What about adding the headphones to the next month’s LPU giveaway.
That would be awesome, and me winning would be even greater πŸ˜‰

  9. thomasbrablec on April 27, 2011 at 2:29 am

Haha! Sony MDR-7506 – I’ve got the same headphones and they are amazing. I’ve been using them for my computer and for my guitar for over 7 years now (my dad gave them to me, since he works in NPR and they’ve got tones) and they still work amazingly, I never had any problems (except the ones I caused) with them. I’ve been riding over the cable every day (not on purpose)with my chair, I ripped the coating off the wire and they’ve fallen on the ground (or I threw them on the ground) over a thousand times at least.
For those who don’t know these: Sony MDR-7506 headphones, they cost around $100, but they are worth EVERY penny! These are most definitely the best headphones you can get.

  10. bandbananas on April 26, 2011 at 7:35 pm

Mike Shinoda, God bless you and the band. You should consider playing some songs on Reanimation Live with a blend of the band’s new sound. Or consider doing another reanimation with the newer albums. Good experiment. You should release another mash-up / collaboration album. Just an idea. Hope the future album will be successful.

Everyone has some pretty good comments about the headphones. ME. 1-SONY stands in a great place for being one of my favorite brands to buy and keep for a very long time. 2- You probably got one of those pairs that were made better than the rest that year. 3- Most likely the cover for the foam is real leather. Correct my if I’m wrong. 4- Idea. Sign, doodle on them and put them up on music for relief. If you dont plan on keeping them. 5- Last but not least. New pair trial first before you decide what you are going to do with the old pair.

Wishing you and your family a Happy Easter.

  37. lode1989 on April 23, 2011 at 2:03 pm

Headphones are dangerous for ear ringings. You or the other guys never had trouble with it Mike? I have!! I listened to much Linkin Park in the past and now I am in a rockband, producing beats, work with screaming kids. I really need to take ear breaks. :d

  38. rockermeg on April 23, 2011 at 12:33 pm

I always get attached to headphones, I bought a limited pair of LA Lakers Skullcandy, they broke and I replaced them with a pair of Sennheisers. They were good quality but no headphones look as awesome as Skullcandy.

  39. cincybmxlpfreak on April 23, 2011 at 12:33 pm

Aww! That’s super awesome! Sony is the best. πŸ˜€

  40. lapkoola on April 23, 2011 at 11:37 am

I also have this trait of keeping the old and used things – I grow attached to them so easily, which in general is kinda problematic ;P
Your headphones look exactly like my brother’s btw ;D
    Hugs and Happy Easter =)

  41. jessietxo on April 23, 2011 at 11:13 am

  47. Claudia B. on April 23, 2011 at 8:26 am

These headphones deserve a retirement. They withstood Chester’s vocals for 15 years! My headphones can survive like a year, maybe two (if I practically don’t even use them), but not 15 years. Headphones fear me, I guess πŸ™‚

I think I still have my first pair of headphones, but they’re so broken for 7-8 years.

  48. lot321 on April 23, 2011 at 7:58 am

whoaa SONY can sustain chester’s screamin n Mike’s rap n singin for 15years, dope yo !!

    Mr Shinoda !!!!

  50. Michael Macdonald on April 23, 2011 at 7:11 am

My first pair of decent headphones were the Sony MDR-V600s. They’re still going strong after 4 years, although the faux leather and foam are starting to crumble.

Just bought a pair of Sennheiser HD650s a couple of weeks ago. Brilliant headphones. Almost too brilliant, sometimes they’re a little bit too flattering on my mixes. But they make a beautiful sound nonetheless!

  51. vickykun on April 23, 2011 at 6:28 am

Those kind of headphones were really great.

The new ones canΒ΄t last forever…

  52. derekoswald on April 23, 2011 at 5:48 am

Hey guys! Derek from LPAssociation here. Mike can correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m about 90% sure his earphones are the Sony MDR7506. They currently retail for about 84.95 on Amazon and they can be found here: . The giveaway about this being the same is the shape of the earphones, and the blue “professional” sticker that Mike has miraculously still kept on there after all those years. Hope this is correct Mike!

  53. leenee89 on April 23, 2011 at 5:16 am

wow 15 years? my headphones “survive” only like…erm..1 year?!

But aren’t those a bit too old to handle your new 70-something-layered songs, i don’t know…I would recommend checking out some new ones too πŸ™‚

  56. sukitang on April 23, 2011 at 3:50 am

you can always count on the quality of SONY. I’ve proven it also myself. My experience is with battery life. Used to have a sony walkman that played for soooo long. i noticed when i tried a different brand.

also, right now i am using these, i think also 15 year old, speakers on my computer. Did a little magic and now its my recycled desktop speaker! its actually part of a SONY FH-CX35 mini component which has a CD and tape player. the CD player doesnt work anymore one of the tape players still works and also the radio. The speakers STILL sound PHENOMENAL!!! IM LOVIN IT!!! Specially when i play my i-tunes in it!

Is it just me or is Sony waaaay ahead of time? I dont own that pair, however, i have used a pair (my cousin owns a pair) and they are AMAZING. its pretty awsome that they still sound great after 15 years. I agree with Evooba. You should do some art work on your old pair when you buy the new ones. They would look GREAT! ;D

  69. adiek84 on April 23, 2011 at 12:00 am

This is hilarious, cause the same thing happened to me the other day! My brother gave me some headphones (also from Sony, props to them) for Christmas years ago and they were the best headphones I ever possessed! I was devastated when they broke a few days ago, but then I found out that they were still being sold on amazon and ordered them again. There’s nothing better than new/old headphones. Never change a winning team!

  70. icecold25 on April 22, 2011 at 11:27 pm

  71. evooba on April 22, 2011 at 10:58 pm

No way! Wow! I need to change my headphones like every 3-4 years. They keep breaking down from the max volume I always listen my music. Lol And maybe now that you’ll get the new ones you can draw something cool on them. Like the little skullies you do πŸ˜‰

I have Sony MDR-XD200 & they do good job for home theater system.

  81. txfireeyes247 on April 22, 2011 at 9:37 pm

Funny, we still have my husbands Sony speakers from a stero set he got over 20 years ago. They have the a nice 12″ woofer, mid-range & tweeter that still sounds really good. We had to spray paint them with a black grafite color to get rid of that fake wood look. That way it matches all the new componets. Just can’t give up a good sound product when you have one. We completly understand. Have fun with your new/old set.

  82. Alexandra Nofi on April 22, 2011 at 9:33 pm

I keep headphones forever until they no longer produce any sound.

Know what’s weird, though? I have an old pair that (I am going to keep because I love them), but, I’ve been looking for new ones too. When it comes to headphones we must be on the same wavelength, lol.

Aight, now, when the hell is the music video for Iridescent premiering? Is there at LEAST a preview coming soon? The throne, the leather, the snake… It is KILLING me that the video is not out yet. *dies* I had finally gotten over my crush on you and now it is back full force. Blame my rare fangirling on Joe. It’s his fault. Don’t give me that look. You’re just as bad as me with your fanboying.

  83. Chowpuck on April 22, 2011 at 9:32 pm

My father gave me his old headphones . They are like like 35 years old and still working =)

  84. kathyxx on April 22, 2011 at 9:23 pm

That’s AMAZING. I never buy expensive headphones because they will get the KATHYxx treatment where a wire will go bad in about half a year.

Headphones with the stupid built in volume controls are particularly bad. I’ve broken those in literally two weeks.

15 years to me is impossible, lol.

  85. Bru PrevigonstΓ© on April 22, 2011 at 9:23 pm
