A couple weeks ago, the following message caught my eye on Twitter:
“LPUers r ‘First class fans’ cause they fuckin pay.the other fans r nothing to you, cause we dont pay, huh?PISSED OFF! @linkinpark @m_shinoda”
Quick recap: LPU is the Linkin Park fan organization. It costs $60 for a year-long membership. The details of what you get with membership are listed here. I assume the “first class fan” part was in reference to a comment the band made at some point. This person appears to be very (10 out of 10) upset.
It’s sometimes hard to read the nuances of intended emotion in a typed blog post, so I’ll be very clear that I’m not angry, nor do I feel defensive as I write this. I’m calmly sitting in a hotel room on tour, with a cup of coffee and a couple pieces of toast. And this tweet got me thinking about something that’s bigger than the “who is the best fan” question.
So, let’s answer the tweet!
I tweeted about this video a couple weeks ago–an updated Silicon Valley version of “Today Was A Good Day.” I thought the Jambox version was funny, but I wanted to remix the track and add a little more of the Ice Cube original. Enjoy, gangsta.
Great piece and video about this piece by Ekundayo.
We held another LP Underground Summit in Hamburg yesterday. It was a fun one; the fans got together for mini golf, they walked our stage and played our instruments, I did a tour of the backstage with a group, Phoenix did a chat, we met everyone, talked, and signed autographs.
After the signing and a Q and A session, Chester and I wanted to play something special for everyone:

In our band, there are many moments that help define–to us and you–who we are as a group. With each of those moments, we weigh a myriad of factors–how we felt about it, what the fans’ reactions were, how it affected the band in broad or specific terms. Is this music interesting? Should we curse on that song? Should we tour with this band? Should we put our song in that movie?
Each time we enter a new phase of the band, we rely on our own sense of what we like, and mix it with the opinions of people whose opinions we trust and value.
This is one of those times.
At the link below, you’ll find a list of questions. It only takes a few moments to fill out. But by doing so, you could–quite literally–be helping define the future of Linkin Park. Let us know who you are and what you want. As an added bonus, one person will receive an autographed A THOUSAND SUNS box set.

Three great tastes that taste great together.
(above: Jeremy Fish listens to stories by Snoop Dogg, Bryan Coons, Mike Giant and Aesop Rock)
I like Jeremy Fish’s stuff. It’s not pretentious. It’s not complicated. It’s not trying to be something it’s not. When he nails it, his art just seems to hit the right note. Although his subject matter is often taken from everyday life, Fish finds a way to push the envelope in his execution, making the piece into something charming and–most importantly–fun to look at.
His latest show, at Joshua Liner Gallery in New York, “puts stories and storytellers front and center as Fish demonstrates the enduring appeal of storytelling in popular culture. The exhibition features assorted tales from a wide swath of contemporary life-including from artists, skateboarders, rappers, athletes, a stripper, a cop, and a historian-which Fish has reinterpreted in lovingly realized painted works. Rendered in acrylic on hand-cut wood panels, these thirty “story paintings” are accompanied by audio recordings of the source tales recounted by the original storytellers, available to gallery visitors on MP3 players and headphones mounted next to each work.”
If I wasn’t in Europe, I’d be at this show. If for no other reason than to see the Snoop Dogg painting, and find out the end of the story where he “pulled out hs worm.”
OK, it took a while to listen through all the great submissions in response to my earlier post about adding your music on LP Radio. Thanks for all the amazing submissions. I had three favorites, in no particular order…

OMNISCIENT FEAT. SKAM 2
If you’re going to mix rap and rock, you have to do something a little extra to catch my attention. This track by Omniscient & Skam2 has it.

MISSING SHIPS
One of my favorites was Missing Ships “Forget Me, Forgive Me.” I’m definitely putting this track on our station. Here’s what it sounds like. By the way, the image above is their mixtape / album, which can be found here.

Thanks again to everyone who took time to post about their music. You’ll be hearing these and more on our radio station.
I got a lot of retweets and questions about this photo of my bloody finger…here’s the short story. I had just flown from LA to Paris. I was pretty tired and jetlagged. I got a new blender, and I was about to, um, blend something…I took the bottom part off (the part with the blade), and set it down on a counter to go grab something else. Then, being tired and distracted, I reached for the blender bottom without really paying attention, and that little bastard ATE TWO OF MY FINGERS.
Luckily, my friends and road crew tipped me off on a little trick of the trade: super glue will hold awkward cuts like this one together. Here’s how that works (link).
The cuts are really not that bad, BTW. But thank you to everyone who voiced concern about the photo. I was able to play guitar and piano.
See you in Donnington tonight.
