Billy Shire and La Luz de Jesus

October 8, 2011

La Luz de Jesus is one of the most important galleries in Los Angeles.  I remember the first time I visited the wild-looking building in the late ’90s; the vibrant colors and bizarre decor–an outsider’s mix of tattoo, pinup, and traditional Mexican art–told me right away that this was a unique place.

Clearly, the thing that made this gallery special wasn’t the decor.  La Luz de Jesus has featured and introduced some of the most exciting artists of its “whatever-you-want-to-call-it” scene: Frank Kozik, Tara McPherson, Gary Baseman, Owen and Aaron Smith, Shawn Barber, Matt Groening, The Clayton Brothers, Shag, Manuel Ocampo, Charlie Immer, Scott Musgrove, Marion Peck, Tim Biskup, Joe Sorren, and Mark Ryden, to name a few.

Last night was the opening of the 25th Anniversary show at La Luz, celebrating Billy Shire and his amazing gallery.  After the jump, you’ll see some of my terrible photos of the event.  To really enjoy the images, just head down to La Luz de Jesus.

I just took time to translate a horrible and unprofessional review of Linkin Park’s show at Rock Werchter in Belgium last summer, written by Humo magazine, to English and I posted it -as well as my opinion- to the LP forums (I hope I’m allowed to do that)…
I don’t know if you’re interested in reading it. In my opinion that review is full of rudeness though.
The link to the original (Dutch written) article is also included in my post. That show was an amazing experience to most of us (very clearly when you look at the comments there, it’s all in Dutch though)
My translation (I did my best): http://www.linkinpark.com/forum/topics/fellow-lp-soldiers-time-to-get-pissed-off

One question. LP was always reinventing it self, trying something new, why you’re never try to sing in spanish?

Frijol Boy is my favorite here…(Just checked his other work, awesome!)
Gosh I wish I lived in LA too, to be able to go see it all for myself (The galleries in my country usually have very old art, which I’m not a very big fan of…Not that I don’t like it, it’s just that I prefer modern stuff)
Some of these pieces remind me of your work, very nice!
