Lyrics In Print, kinda (RIP Nate Dogg)

March 16, 2011

As you know, I occasionally do a “Lyrics In Print” segment here on mikeshinoda.com.  And with the super-sad news that Nate Dogg has passed away, I was going to put “Regulate” up…but then I saw a post by a friend on Twitter…and caught the Wikipedia “Synopsis” of the song’s story, which goes a-little-sumthin’ like this:

Lyrics In Print: The Warrior!

January 14, 2009

You run, run…run away

It’s your heart…that you betray

Feeding on…your hungry eyes

I bet you’re not so civilized

Well, isn’t love..primitive

A wild gift…that you wanna give

Break out of captivity

And follow me, stereo jungle child

Love is the kill…..your heart’s still wild

Chorus:

Shootin’ at the walls of heartache, bang, bang, I am the warrior

Well I am the warrior, and heart to heart you’ll win..if you survive

the warrior….the warrior

You talk, talk, you talk to me

Your eyes touch me physically

Stay with me, we’ll take the night

As passion

takes another bite

Who’s the hunter…who’s the game?

I feel the beat…call your name

I hold you close…in victory

Idon’t wanna tame your animal style..

you won’t be caged…in the call of the wild….

My favorite part? Probably too many to name. “And follow me, stereo jungle child / Love is the kill…..your heart’s still wild”

I don’t know what a stereo jungle child is, but I bet it’s pretty kickass.

Lyrics In Print: ABC, PART TWO!

November 30, 2008

Coming back to the ABC lyrics from yesterday, I decided to think more about the line: “If you judge a book by the cover / Then you’d judge the look by the lover.”

Fun!

Maybe some of our college graduates (who studied logic) can correct me if I’m off a bit, but here’s what I think is going on: I decided it’s actually not much of a logic problem. It’s actually illogical.

The line is: if you judge “object 1″ by “impression of object 1″ then you’ll judge the “impression of object 2″ by the “object 2″

Assuming “the look” refers to “your first impression of the lover,” or “the exterior of the lover that gives you an impression,” the logical version of the line would be: “If you judge a book by the cover, then you’d judge the lover by the look”.

Unfortunately, this line doesn’t sound nor sing very well, so ABC changed the wording. Artistic license, I guess.

Just like “Are we human, or are we dancer.”

Or even “Isn’t it ironic…like ray-yee-yain on your wedding day.”

It doesn’t have to make sense! I forgot to mention: even though this song is ridiculous and illogical, I still love it, HAHAHA!

Lyrics In Print: ABC

November 29, 2008

When your girl has left you out on the pavement (goodbye)

Then your dreams fall apart at the seams

Your reason for livings your reason for leaving

Dont ask me what it means

Thats the look, thats the look

The look of love

If you judge a book by the cover,

Then you’d judge the look by the lover

I hope youll soon recover,

Me I go from one extreme to another

And though my friends just might ask me

They say martin maybe one day youll find true love

I say maybe, there must be a solution

To the one thing, the one thing, we cant find

Thats the look, thats the look

The look of love

Thats the look, thats the look

The look of love

Thats the look, thats the look

Sisters and brothers

Should help each other

Oh, oh, oh

Heavens above

hip hip hooray-ay

yippee ai yippee ai yay

Thats the look, thats the look

Be lucky in love

Look of love

My favorite part? “If you judge a book by the cover, Then you’d judge the look by the lover”

What?

I think there’s a logic problem in there somewhere, but I’m too confused by the rest of the lyrics to actually break it down. If you haven’t heard this song, it’s possible that “Heavens above / hip hip hooray-ay / yippee ai yippee ai yay” is a little less funny when taken out of context…but not likely.

RIO
By Duran Duran

Moving on the floor now babe you’re a bird of paradise

Cherry ice cream smile I suppose it’s very nice

With a step to your left and a flick to the right you catch that mirror way out west

You know you’re something special and you look like you’re the best

Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand

Just like that river twisting through a dusty land

And when she shines she really shows you all she can

Oh Rio, Rio dance across the Rio Grande

I’ve seen you on the beach and I’ve seen you on TV

Two of a billion stars

It means so much to me, Like a birthday or a pretty view

But then I’m sure that you know it’s just for you

(Chorus)

Hey now woo look at that did she nearly run you down

At the end of the drive the lawmen arrive

You make me feel alive, alive alive

I’ll take my chance cause luck is on my side or something

I know what you’re thinking I tell you something I know what you’re thinking

Her name is Rio she don’t need to understand

And I might find her if I’m looking like I can

Oh Rio, Rio hear them shout across the land

From mountains in the north down to the Rio Grande

M: “It means so much to me, Like a birthday or a pretty view / But then I’m sure that you know it’s just for you”

Seriously…What?

This song is full of lyrics that just rhyme for rhyming’s sake.

I like cake.

Wake and bake.

lyrics in print: Hank Jr.

November 1, 2008

excerpts from “McCain-Palin Tradition” by Hank Jr.

…Now this old Union’s got problems That is plain to see

The Democrats bankrupted Fannie Mae N Freddie Mac Just like 1, 2, 3

The bankers didn’t want to make all those bad loans, But Bill Clinton said you got to

Now they want a bail out, what I’m talking about Is a Democrat liberal who doo

John N Sarah tell ya Just what they think

And they’re not gonna blink They don’t have terrorist friends To whom their careers are linked

Yes, John is his own man And Sarah fixed Alaska’s broken condition

They’re gonna go just fine We’re headed for better times

It’s a McCain – Palin tradition

…They all want to know Sarah /Why do you hunt / John why do you fish

How could she be so smart and savvy / such a “hey good-lookin” dish

Yes John is his own man / And Sarah fixed Alaska’s bad condition

They’re going to get it right / We’re going to see the light

It’s a McCain – Palin tradition

excerpts from “Family Tradition” by Hank Jr.

…Country music singers have always been a real close family

but lately some of my kin folks have disowned a few others and me

i guess its because i kinda changed my direction

i guess i went and broke the family tradition

they get on me wanna know Hank, why do you drink?

(Hank) why do you roll smoke?

Why must you live out the songs that you wrote?

over and over everybody made my prediction

so if i get stoned I’m just carryin’ on an old family tradition

…Lordy, I have loved some ladies and I have loved Jim Beam

and they both tried to kill me in 1973

when that doctor asked me Son how did you get in this condition

I said hey sawbones I’m just carryin on an old family tradition!

“Feel Good Inc.” by Gorillaz

City’s breaking down on a camel’s back.

They just have to go ’cause they don’t know wack

So all you fill the streets it’s appealing to see

You wont get out the county, ‘cos you’re bad and free

You’ve got a new horizon It’s ephemeral style.

A melancholy town where we never smile.

And all I wanna hear is the message beep.

My dreams, they’ve got to kiss, because I don’t get sleep, no..

Windmill, Windmill for the land.

Turn forever hand in hand

Take it all in on your stride

It is sinking, falling down

Love forever love is free

Let’s turn forever you and me

Windmill, windmill for the land

Is everybody in?

Laughing gas these hazmats, fast cats,

Lining them up-a like ass cracks,

Lay these ponies at the track

Its my chocolate attack.

Shit, I’m stepping in the heart of this here

Care bear bumping in the heart of this here

Watch me as I gravitate

Hahahahahahaa.

Yo, we gonna go ghost town,

This motown,

With yo sound

You’re in the place

You gonna bite the dust

Can’t fight with us

With yo sound

You kill the INC.

So don’t stop, get it, get it

Until you’re Jet Ahead.

Yo, watch the way I navigate

Hahahahahhaa

Don’t stop, get it, get it

We are your captains in it

Steady,

Watch me navigate,

Ahahahahahhaa.

Don’t stop, get it, get it

We are your captains in it

Steady, watch me navigate

Ahahahahahhaa.

LYRICS IN PRINT #2

October 11, 2008

“Escapism” by Keith Murray

High as a motherf**ker / Zonin’ on cloud nineteen as the Def Squad takes you / On another eerie place of a dark side

I escape from the world

To show niggaz that my style is superb

For what it’s worth, I’m gettin’ off planet Earth

But I gotta redefine gravity first

So I figure, I get my guns and that would bust the biggest cap

From the demand of the trigger

I’m equipped to dip with a knapsack

And a survival kit with blunts and shit

I’m in all black with a face muzzle

Wanna double to NASA, to hijack a space shuttle

More anxious than curiosity

I enter the back door with animosity, yeah, here’s Murray

Searchin’ for the astronauts, checkin’ my watch

Determined the time I had to be out

I saw my prey without a second delay

Suited up, strapped down, straight and on my way

For five seconds to liftoff I was in the Helm

when I escaped from the world…

I went through a Milky Way and stars

And landed on my destination, which was Mars,

(whoa, shit)

This planet was foreign and new

As I’m puffin’ on a blunt, observin’ the view

To my surprise, a spaceship arrived

Out came a Martian with six fingers and three eyes

He spoke a bleeky type of dialect

(Bleek, bleek, bleek, bleek, bleek, bleek)

But understood my form of intellect

I said, “I’m Keith Murray from the planet Earth

Where I’m psychosomatic and homicidal with a verse”

My hypercritical form of words busts his brains

And then the whole atmosphere changed

(what the f**k?)

I was surrounded by some Martians in the hut about to front

I used my last resort and pulled out the blunt

Lit it, got the whole Martian crew blitted

So now’s my chance to try to get acquitted

I said, “I escaped from the planet Earth

To let my mind untwirl because I’m mad at the world

And the murder wasn’t premeditated

My language was just misinterpretated.”

One acknowledged I’m right, and pulled out the peace pipe (Aight?)

About to set the vibes right

He lit it with his finger, I smelled the Martian Buddha linger

I felt good ’cause I released some anger

No sooner than the cease of the herb ignite

I was headed back to Earth at the speed of light

Upon my return niggaz thought I was in jail

Nah kids, I escaped from the world…

I don’t know which is my favorite part, “I’m equipped to dip with a knapsack / And a survival kit with blunts and shit,” or “I went through a Milky Way and stars / And landed on my destination, which was Mars”

NEW SEGMENT: LYRICS IN PRINT

October 3, 2008

mike

“SEVENTEEN”
by Winger

I saw sparks fly, from the corner of my eye

And when I turned, it was love at first sight

I said please excuse me, I didn’t catch your name

Oh it’d be a shame not to see you again

And just when I thought she was comin’ to my door

She whispered sweet and brought me to the floor, she said

I’m only seventeen, but I’ll show you love like you’ve never seen

She’s only seventeen, daddy says she’s too young, but she’s old enough for me

Come to my place, we can talk it over, oh everything going down in your head

She said take it easy, I need some time, time to work it out, to make you mine

And just when I thought she was comin’ to my door

She whispered sweet and brought me to the floor, she said

I’m only seventeen, you ain’t seen love, ain’t seen nothing like me

She’s only seventeen, seventeen

(Solo)

Such a bad girl, loves to work me overtime

Feels good (ha), dancin’ close to the borderline

She’s a magic mountain, she’s a leather glove

Oh she’s my soul, it must be love

She’s only seventeen, still she gives me love, like I’ve never seen

She’s only seventeen, daddy says she’s too young, but she’s old enough for me

She’s everything I need, daddy says she’s too young

But she’s old enough, old enough for me
